I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

The first trick Dolly learned was to sit. The trick she still hasn’t mastered is the “don’t jump on the highchair while the baby is eating.” 🙂
Awesome post as always!
Toro, my handsome Havanese, first trick was sit. He has a hard time when asked to “stay”. He’s too excited to “stay” and he’s pretty much our shadow so whatever we do or wherever we go, he’s right there 🙂
The first trick my boxer Roxy ever learned – she taught herself! We had a little Halloween decoration on the front door and one day we heard her knock it with her nose meaning she had to go outside! We have since put some bells on the door and she jingles them when she wants to go out! Our current challenge is getting her to roll over… but I still get pretty excited just when she sits!
We probably taught him sit first. He pretty much still only knows that, down, paw, and high five. Although he’ll do anything you ask if food is involved.
First trick we taught both our girls was sit. They have never been very good at the stay command though!!
The first trick I taught Hunter, my puggle, was sit or possible to pee outside. I am pretty sure Hunter could learn any trick if there is food incentive. If there is no food incentive then whether or not he is willing to learn or perform his commands depends on his mood. He is a total Divo (male Diva).
Our little guys could never get “roll over.” We tried for a while, but I think he was uncomfortable rolling onto his back.
The first trick I ever taught Emma, my dachshund lab, was to roll over. Now that has become her go to and if she doesn’t understand what I’m asking her to do she keeps rolling over and over! She’s never quite mastered “stay”. If there is a bird, squeaky toy, or rabbit around she’s not staying no matter what kind of treat I have!
The first trick Bean learned was to sit. she was our first dog. No we have three good sized dogs, from 60 to 80 lbs. We love them so much!!
The first trick I ever taught Ray was how to shake his paw for a treat. We’re still working on that sit and stay business!
The one and only trick my pup has mastered was ‘turn’! Oh, and being a little princess, she’s mastered that too;)
We first taught our puppy to sit, but my favorite trick of his is “speak” or “turn around.”
The first trick we always teach our dogs (all 3!) is to leave it. We are able to put food, treats, toys, etc down and say leave it and they won’t go for it until we give the OK. The trick our dogs could never master is rolling over. Sit, heal, stay, they get.. rolling over- not so much!
Our dogs almost mastered stay and shake, but sometimes they get too excited. 🙂
First trick was definitely sit! Luckily, that seemed to come naturally. We are still working on stay though haha
I have taught my dog to sit, but I haven’t taught him to hold his pee during moments of excitement.
“Sit” was the first thing Oscar learned! He struggles with “stay”… he needs to be where ever the action is!
Teaching Bogart to fetch was a piece of cake. For the life of me, he won’t shake or high 5. It’s not as easy as they say on youtube!
First trick was to high five! I woke up one morning and my husband said that “Shake” wasn’t cool enough, so he spent the night teaching him to high five!! However, no matter how hard we’ve tried, roll over has never happened 🙁
Prime’s first trick was to sit. Favorite is to give kisses when prompted… and not mastered is, without a doubt, leash manners.
Don’t know if sit is really a trick, but first thing they both learned 🙂
I think we’ve taught all of our dogs (past and present) to sit and speak. I have to share that my mother has taught her yorkie-poo to ring a little bell on a string connected to the door when she has to go outside. Cutest thing ever!
The first trick we taught our Bullmastiff puppy was “Go in your crate!” He is completely crate trained now and loves his little den. One trick he hasn’t quite mastered yet is “Stay” because sometimes he is just too excited to stay put, but we’re working on it!
We’ve taught our rescue pup quite a few fun tricks, with the help of our awesome obedience trainer! My favorite has to be “leave it” because if he’s thinking about getting into something he shouldn’t, he almost always listens! Very helpful! He gets so darn excited to meet new people, so “down” hasn’t really sunk in quite yet… he can’t help it, he just wants to love everyone & nothing gets him excited like meeting new friends 😉
First trick we got Charlie to do was sit (and shake soon thereafter). Anything in the realm of come, stop barking, calm down, go lay down, dont chew that…falls on deaf ears!
Our lab, Elmer, can high five and it makes our one year old son laugh hysterically every time!
The first trick we taught Riley was sit. To this day, I can’t get him to heel or shake. We’re working on them, he’s only 9 months old.
The first trick Belle probably learned was sit, but my favorite trick of hers is “where’s your toy?” and she’ll run around my apartment looking for her favorite toy/bone of that moment. She has yet to master the shake command and would rather just jump and lick your face when she meets a new person.
The first trick we taught our Zoey was sit!
The one trick she could never quite master was roll over
My Whoodle (wheaten/poodle) pup Nola first learned to sit of course, but then I taught her to bow! Heaven help me, but her stubborn terrier side refuses to come on command (unless it suits her).
P.S. Sadie’s teeth are soooo white! Do you brush her teeth every day??
Bailey is only 6 months old. She’s mastered sit and down when we’re practicing at home but can’t stay calm enough yet to do them when other people are around!
Pandora’s first trick was to sit. We still work on shake and rollover.
We actually just adopted our dog last night! He is a 6 mos terrier mix, and we haven’t been able to work on any tricks yet. He showed us *his* nifty trick of hopping up on our daughter’s bed three times, which we had to discourage 🙂 He does have a comfy spot on our couch staked out, however.
The first trick I taught my dogs was sit – pretty basic. What they couldn’t master….anything else. I’m a bad dog parent 🙁
I have two chihuahua and they have never been very good learning tricks. They are good at “singing” aka “howling” on cue. They are NOT good at sitting. So easy. So impossible!
I have a Vizsla as well, and she has mastered quite a few tricks! But ALL of our tricks seem to go out the window when she sees an animal. We’re working on keeping her focus when there are other distractions (squirrels!!).
My GSP, Molly, first learned how to sit! 🙂 she has since mastered several others!! Thank goodness because she is high energy and craaaazy!! 🙂
My dog mastered sit and shake. However, dropping the ball after retrieving it is still a challenge haha
Wilson is a Cairn Terrier (Toto) and is brilliant, but a little stinker. His first trick was sit – which he will gladly do IF you offer him food. The one thing his older Westie brother Malone does that Wilson won’t do? Speak (bark) on command.
Well, you obviously know how smart Vizsla’s are, his first trick was sit…but I must say the trick he has mastered is how to get away with everything!! (including opening the pantry and knocking down the treat he wants and then looks at me with those puppy eyes! Yes, I do give in and get him his treat…who can resist that trick!) He cannot seem to get not jumping on people when they first walk through the door…he thinks everyone is there to see him and wants to show them how happy he is!
Our first furchild Chloe is part corgi part german shepherd. The first trick she learned, which also happened to be self taught, is what we call “sit pretty”. It’s a pretty standard corgi stance where they sit back on their butts with their stubby little front paws in the perfect begging position. The trick she never got the hang of was playing dead because she a) never sits still and b) has trust issues.
We love Barkbox! Can you win if you have subscribed in the past before? Taught my dog how to sit up on her back legs.
Mr. Moose’s first trick was sit and the one he’s not quite mastered is stay! ha!
Gus learned to tilt his head and smile when we said “CHEEEEESE!!” cutest thing… We are still working on no barking!!
The first trick my sweet River, a husky/lab mix, learned was sit. The one he has never been able to master was not to beg. He loves food and will do just about anything to get someone to give him some!!
The first trick we taught Daisy, our Beagle, was to sit and speak. She has not quite mastered Shake yet but, we are not giving up!!
The first trick we (my family inherited her when my grandfather passed) was “paw.” We were shocked when she figured it out so quickly, because she was at least 8 years old when we got her, but I guess you can teach an old dog *some* tricks!
The trick she hasn’t quite mastered is “lay/down.” No matter how much we try to entice her with treats, she just can’t get it!
We have two miniature dachshunds.. we’re still working on the trick “don’t pee in the house!” 🙂
Copper’s first trick he was taught was to come in the door after us, he was a wild puppy and would knock us over trying to get into the house (he’s a chocolate lab) so we taught him to let us go in first. He couldn’t quite master roll over he only does it on select surfaces (the comfy ones) spoiled dog! 🙂
The first trick I taught my dog was sit. He has never mastered roll over and gets super nervous when we try to help him.
