I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

THe first trick I taught my dog was “sit”. He still cannot roll over!
Mark V says
First trick chewbaca learned and I had nothing to with it was that he would only poop at home. If we went for a walk he wouldn’t poop till he was in his own yard. Eventually he started pooping before his walks incase it was long one and he had to go.
Melissa says
Tank’s first trick was sit which he learned very quickly, followed by lay down and shake. He has never mastered roll over but I think it’s because it’s too uncomfortable for him.
Salome says
The first trick I taught my dog was shake. The one he can never master is roll over… he gets half way there and panics every time!
Ashley says
If only my pups knew at least one trick…lol its a struggle to get his stubborn butt inside most of the time.
Maria Smit says
My yellow lab, Hoss, very quickly learned how to shake and hi five. He has never mastered the art of being able to “stay”, he is just too excited and wants to follow you everywhere. I know Hoss would love the Bark Box, he already thinks everything in our house is for him 😉
Arynn says
First trick was shake! He never could quite master “play dead”
Michelle Mayne-Nicholls says
The first trick I taught my dog was to give a “pawshake.” Now every time he sits, he kind of automatically lifts up his paw knowing there may be a treat involved! We haven’t quite mastered the “rollover.” He doesn’t like to take his eyes off of the prize, or his momma, and rolls on his back and then just stays there…this is also his favorite sleeping position. ha!
Julie says
The first trick we taught our dog was to shake hands. My favorite trick she does is to play dead when we say “bang!”
Ashley Kopps says
The first trick I taught my black lab, Oakley, was sit! Started with the basics and worked our way up to shake, high five, roll over 🙂 Dogs are so smart!
Caitlin says
The first trick that my dog, Egan, learned was to spin around in a circle! The trick he can’t master yet is the “shake” I think he rather just give me kisses 🙂
Katie M says
The first trick we taught the dogs was sit! Both of our dogs have a hard time with playing dead or “Bang!”
Peter says
Milo’s first trick was the hand shake with his paw….and that is about how far he got. Not too bright of a dog but I love him for it!
Makenna says
The first trick was to sit! Shes only 13 months old, so I’m still working on adding to her list of tricks 🙂
Kristen says
I don’t teach my dog tricks. The one command we are still working on is “come”!
Sarah says
Not so much a trick, but the first thing we taught our dog (Halo) was to go in and out the doggy doors. He wasn’t too sure about them, but once one of us went on the other side with a treat, he started getting a hang of it. He picks and chooses when he listens to “sit”. And “shake” is still a completely foreign word to him (no matter how many times I’ve tried to teach him, he will give you his paw when he wants to give it to you, not when you ask.) Silly boy.
Robyn says
Being a puppy the word “sit” still provokes “Look at how cute I am” eyes!
Brittany says
My dog, Abbigail, refuses to master any tricks. Why do tricks when you get treats anyways?
Trina Shockey says
Vinni (my 3 yr old Vizsla) learned to sit first, like most dogs. He doesn’t have a large array of tricks up his sleeve!! He can sit, stay, high 5, lay, give hugs and pray. I am always jealous of the dogs who let their owners put the treat on top of their nose and they don’t eat it until they are told!!! Never gonna happen for my food driven pupper!
Thanks for the run down on BarkBox. I’ve been intrigued by it for a while! It would be awesome to win, but if not I’ll probably take advantage of the discount!!! 🙂
Samantha Henderson says
Thanks for the review! I would love to have barkbox for our dog Lola. Her first trick was sit, but we taught it to her with a hand motion instead of saying it. That is all she does, she doesn’t like to be bothered with tricks.
erica says
first trick: sit
could never master: “pray” we tried to get him to bow his head in a prayer position, and he just wouldn’t. lol
Betsy says
I have a little yorkie name Vinny. He is such a character. We potty trained him first. We have a bell on the back door and her hits it with his nose if he wants to go out. We have the playing dead trip almost down. A barkbox may just be the motivation he needs!
Rachael says
The first trick I taught my dog was sit and then shake (or “paw”) as we call it! She can’t quite master standing up but we’re getting there!
Tirzah says
We started with the basics (sit, stay, etc) with my dog Ziggy. He’s pretty good with all of the tricks he knows until he gets excited… then it all goes out the window 🙂
Laura @ The Healthy Sooner says
Our dogs mastered all the usual tricks pretty quickly (sit, stay, lie down, etc.), but neither one has ever been able to roll over! We have tried everything! Maybe they would do it for a Bark Box! ; )
Anne says
Hi Julie!
Sadie is so adorable!! My puppy, Miss Mona, first learned how to walk on a leash. We still have not quite mastered “shake” but we still try to teach her 🙂 She would love the bark box and maybe it would give her the extra motivation she needs
Haley says
I don’t think I’ve come across a trick my pup can’t master! I think “sit” was her first, if you consider that a trick and not a command. Shake was probably her first actual trick.
Janet says
“Sit” (so I can get out the door first!!)
“Heel” but Baron is learning this better as he gets older. I’m happy as long as he’s not pulling, 100 pounds of dog is too many pounds of pulling!
Meredith says
The first trick I taught my dog was sit, but she can’t seem to master is stay. She’s one determined beagle!!
Allison says
The one trick I wish my chocolate lab Bentley would learn is the bang-bang fall over
dead trick. I think it would be a great party trick!
Nadine says
First trick my pup mastered was “sit”, he never could quite get the whole “shake” thing. He ‘paws’ at me all time to cuddle under the covers and what not. Crazy puppy 🙂
Courtney F. says
Tricks? Lol, my lil shihtzu dropped out of doggie school haha!! He does know how to play fetch with his favorite toy though!!! 🙂
Anna says
My little Great Dane puppy is only 10 weeks old but she can already sit and lay down! We’re one puppy class in 🙂
Heather Holdgrafer says
We started with the basics like sit and shake.
Heather Holdgrafer says
My dogs haven’t quite mastered “lay down”. Working on it though!
Renee says
My pup Sequoia is working on turning around… makes it easy to dry wet paws or brush the other side… been working on it for about 4 years now… LOL! Thanks!
Jen says
Meekos first trick was to respond to his name. I tried everything to get him to learn to play dead to no avail. Haha he’d love a barkbox!
Jennifer says
Ruxin is a Great Dane- lab mix aka my baby! The first trick he learned was sit, down (lay) and stay using only hand motions. We have never been able to master the speak trick. He will whine and moan if you whine at him until he is annoyed, but never on demand 🙂
Jen Callahan says
I taught my cocker spaniel, Emma, how to do “a stay,” which is whenever I eat she immediately walks 9 feet (yes, we measured during training) away so that she’s not hovering over us whenever we eat. It’s great, and company always appreciates that she’s not in their face during mealtime.
The one trick she’s hesitant with? If you tell her “Gimme paw,” she won’t stick with just one. She keeps trying to give both paws at the same time, which results in her flopping on the floor. It’s hilarious!
Holly says
I have two dogs, a Pekingese named Gracie and a mini long haired Dachshund named Maggie. Neither have mastered any of the “normal” dog commands (after almost ten years) but both give kisses on demand. I say “Gimme a kiss” and they’re on it. And that’s just fine with me!
Leslie says
Like so many others, I started off with the “sit” command. Although it was eventually somewhat mastered, unfortunately my little pug (Mamie) is a tad on the slow side. In fact, when I decided to take her to a training class, they stuck her with all the puppies–and she was 3 years old! Ha!
Thanks so much for the giveaway, Julie!
Karen says
The first trick I taught my pup, Steve was “sit,” but the coolest trick I taught him was to give us a high five. Steve never really understood roll over. He earned a treat anyway for being cute!
Mariel says
The first trick Cinnabon learned was sit. She knows a lot…sit, give paw, lay down, speak, how to play dead, balance a bone on her nose and then catch it, BUT the one trick that she doesn’t love to do and that took a long time to learn was rollover! We love our furbaby. I hope we win. 🙂
Courtney says
My Golden Retriever, Spencer, first learned “sit” when he was 8 weeks old. We have a wonderful trainer that has taught Spencer many things, but he can never understand “roll over!” He would rather have a belly rub than roll over for me!
Alissa says
Shilohs first trick was “look!” Basically, for him to stop whatever he is doing and look at me for safety reasons (maybe stop him from running out into oncoming traffic one day?) we are working on sooooo many but I really want him to learn how to balance things on his head 🙂 would love to bribe him with barkbox goodies!
Sarah says
Callie’s first trick was roll over. We had the help of my wonderful aunt, who trains labs to be seeing eye dogs. Callie still doesn’t have the patience for flinging food off her nose. The closest we’ve gotten is making her wait to eat when we touch food to her nose. Now that she’s a bit overweight, we’ve cut back on treats/trick teaching.
Sadie and Callie would have great fun swimming together! I’m glad someone else is just as obsessed with their dog as I am!
Karaline says
I taught my Brittany, Tucker, to “play dead”. He’s quite good at it, but pretty much any time he sees something tasty (like my dinner) he wants…he thinks he should “play dead” to get it:) Because he’s such a cheese, I give in (or does that make me the cheese?).
He has never been able to master the “high five”. It ends up being more like a spastic slap.
Chrissy says
I have a big, dopey 4-year-old Weimeraner named Shannon, who is the type of dog that even dog lovers have to love! Her first trick was “paw,” but she hasn’t been able to master much else! When I say “dopey,” I really mean it…
Ashley says
My pup Quinn would LOVE a barkbox! Her first trick was “sit” and she’s never quite understood what “get down” meant when she jumped on the bed! So three years later she’s still sleeping with us!
Laura Matthews says
I have a beagle named Rudy. He’ll do anything for a treat so he caught on to tricks pretty quickly. I think the first fun trick he learned was “roll over”. He got that down right away. However, he has never quite mastered the trick where you balance a treat on the dog’s nose and then they flick it off and catch it mid air to eat. Clearly, he sees no point in all that effort and instead when we give him the command, he just turns his head down for the treat to fall to the ground, then snatches it up!
