I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

Lando was a rescue that had only lived outside. When we adopted him we weren’t sure how he was going to handle indoor life or even basic commands. Little did we know what a smart little cookie we had on our hands! His first “tricks” were sit and shake. He still doesn’t get the concept of lay down on command but has no problem snuggling up on the couch. His favorite trick is shaking his head no when we ask him to sit for breakfast and dinner. 2 years later and it still cracks us up! Lando loves BarkBoxes as well. We had to stop our subscription when we moved last month, but we are hoping to pick it back up again! Ps. The tug toy is his favorite too! 🙂
The first trick we probably taught Fletcher was to sit. The one he still struggles with is roll-over. He’s a boxer so rolling over is a little tough for him with his muscular body and long pony legs. 🙂
The one and only trick my dogs knows is sit haha she has a mind of her own….
My pug, Pete, has trouble minding his manners around other dogs so I would say that the trick he hasn’t quite been able to master is the art of “Stay!”
The first trick I taught Spike my Boston was “shake a paw”, he mastered that good. I tried to get him to “roll over” and even went as far as demonstrating this to him and he almost got it…..but then I probably gave up trying to teach him!
I have to answer both for my crazy pups!
The first tricks we taught our dogs is no jumping. They were already big when we got them and could knock someone down easily!
And they’ve never fully mastered the ‘stay’ command. If you have good treats it’ll work for a while but if another dog walks into the room – forget it!
The first trick we’ve tried to teach all of our boxers over the years (only a select few every really mastered it) was “gimme a kiss”. Our one boy Riley was so good at it, he’d basically “pucker” his big flappy lips! It was great! Taya our girl now, gets it too, but she’s a bit rougher, and it’s more of a punch to the mouth with her mouth hehe.
One they’ve never really mastered? The balancing the treat on the nose trick. I blame their stubby squishy faces for it. We threw in the towel for that one!
I am so dog obsessed! We got a puppy this year, so we’re still teaching our 5 month old Westie tricks. But her first was to shake – now she does it everytime she hears a treat bag open! We still need to master listening when we’re out at the dog park – she seems to magically forget her name because she’d rather be playing with all the other dogs 😉
The first thing we taught Daisy is sit and speak. She is still trying to master “shake”. She woul absolutely love to receive a BarkBox!!
Sit was the first command and the most appreciated years later.
The first trick we taught our Sady (!) was to sit, and now she does it whenever a treat is within smelling distance! Almost 3 years later she still hasn’t mastered not jumping on people when they come to the door, but we’re working on it!
This looks great! The first trick i taught my dog (Duncan Donut the shih tzu) was to sit. 🙂
I have two dogs! The first tricks they learned were sit and shake a paw…..they both have not mastered the “stay” command!!!
Gibbs first learned to sit and has not mastered the stay command or down. Gibbs is a minpin that acts like a pogostick…food on the kitchen island may be stolen by him as he is always hungry. 🙂
One thing my dog taught himself was to open our sliding door! We have a house on Cape Cod and our two dogs spend a lot of time outside. My mom would notice that the dogs would be inside and the door open, but couldn’t remember letting them in! Sure enough, sitting around the family room one night, Charlie (our rescue pit-mix) jumped up to slide the door open for him and Bella (our rescue shepherd-mix) as if it was completely normal! Now he does it just about every time he wants to come in 🙂
The first trick Eleanor learned was sit, we are still working on others. I don’t think she will ever learn how to roll over. She is an English bulldog and they are not known for intelligence!
The first trick my Possum learned was sit. She will probably never learn anything beyond that, but I’ll always love her anyway!
The first trick that they learned were ‘Yum Yums’ aka FOOD!
I still can’t get one of my dogs to lie down…she just pops her butt right back up whenever i try!
What a great giveaway! Chaca’s first trick was “sit” and the one we’re still working on is “lay down”.
Sit was probably the first thing our puppy learned and it is so helpful! However, howling when people come to the door has not quite been mastered! 😉
Ahh my Sadie would love this! First trick I taught her was sit. Such a basic one haha. The trick she never could master is (and still can’t to this day) is to lay down and remain laying down….especially when a treat is involved. She kind of just slams her stomach on the ground and pops backs up to sitting. She’s a lab so she wants that treat!
One trick that I keep trying to get them to do is bring back the ball. They will go grab it, but never bring it back. I guess that is there way of telling me I need more exercise lol.
My dachshund mix, Rylie, learned to sit first. Her most complicated trick is giving us her paw! 🙂
What an awseome giveaway! My resuced lab-mix, Benny would LOVE this!!! The tricks I am pretty proud about him mastering are the high-five and low-five. But, we haven’t quite mastered lie down yet. He’s alwas too excited!
wow. Lie down? It’s been a long day! LAY DOWN is what I meant.
The first trick that Mr. Bigglesworth learned was sit! It is still his “go to” trick when he is trying to get a treat and can’t figure out the trick we are asking him to do! The one trick he can’t seem to get it play dead … he always ends up continuing to roll over. His FAVORITE trick though, is “High Five!!”
He’s a 7 month old Golden Doodle who is my little stuffed animal 🙂
The first trick my dog Lucy learned was to sit. She was about 11 weeks old in her puppy training class. She was so cute! The trick she has not mastered is “No barking”. She’s a little high strung.
The first trick Colby, my Vizsla, learned was sit, but she has mastered several. The one she refuses to do is roll-over, unless she’s on carpet. I think her bony little body on tile or hardwood floor is uncomfortable.
We have a 16 week old Vizsla, named Ripley. We have been wanting a Vizsla for about 10 years and finally the timing was right (he came home on Mother’s Day). We were drawn to this amazing breed for many reasons, but one is their intelligence. The first trick we taught him was “sit.” He mastered it that day 🙂 I now understand all your “love talk” about Sadie. My husband now calls me the crazy dog lady, lol.
The first trick our Taz learned was the classic, To sit. He now does this with just a hand command. He sits for treats, to get his leash on for a walk, to be let outside in the morning without us having to say a word!
First trick we taught our dog was ‘shake’ because she naturally liked to put a paw on our arm or hand. Unfortunately a habit we have not been able to break is occasional growling at other dogs – its so weird that she is bothered by some dogs and not at all by others!
I think the first trick Enzo learned was sit but the one he will most likely never master is roll over. I guess I can’t blame him, rolling 145 lbs would be too difficult for me too haha
We have 2 Scottish terriers – the first trick for each of them was to Sit! 🙂
The first trick I taught my dog Bailey was pretty basic – to sit 🙂
We taught our rescue pup Amber to sit and give paw first. She has never mastered “play dead” though.
Our 6 month old lab mastered “sit” and “shake” quickly but “drop it” is another story. Needless to say we’ve had many sock casualties in the past few weeks!
My golden would love this! One trick she does is High Ten. She jumps up and gives us “ten” with both paws. I like to see how high I can get her to jump up! She could never even come close to executing the “Speak” command, but that’s okay. I’m grateful she’s not a barker.
We have two female labradors – Prudie & Lila – and they both struggled to learn the “Down” command. Lila took a year to get it! Even now, they sort of go halfway down and then start creeping back up again. But they both know to make the right cute face to totally excuse any disobedience. 😉
With my first pup, I had to teach him to sit. Then we moved on and latest trick is ‘speak’. Our second pup we worked on fetch… and that worked because he is never without a tennis ball.
Toby learned to shake. Seems to be one of the easier tricks out there, but beyond that…let’s just say we are a work in progress! 🙂
My dog Henry would love this!! The first trick we taught him was to sit and then once that was mastered and he could also lay down, we kindof stopped trying at obedience school! So he never learned to shake … buuut he’s still super cute 🙂
First trick I taught my dog Kinston was to sit, and the one he can never master is to roll over. Just doesn’t seem to understand it haha.
How neat! My dog, Willa, would love this. She is a vizsla like Sadie. We taught her to “sit” first. She now knows most of the basics like “stay”, “shake”, and “speak,” but we are working to master “whisper.” She gets it most of the time, but sometimes she just moves her mouth and no sound comes out!
My Yorkie will sit but that’s the end of his tricks. So much energy!
I taught my dog to sit first, but his first “trick” was to roll over. Cooper is really smartso he’s mastered almost all the tricks we’ve taught him. The only one he can’t quite grasp is to (what I call) sit pretty.
The first trick we taught Scooter, our Sheltie, was “sit” and he totally mastered it! We tried to teach him shake, but with our wood floors he kept sliding backwards! It was so funny!
I guess my Leo’s first trick was “down”… but that’s because when I said “down,” he’d lay down.. and when I said “sit,” he’d lay down too! Silly boy. (Still does this sometimes, so we’re workin’ on differentiating the “sit”!) The trick Leo has not yet mastered is rolling over to his left. He ONLY rolls over to his right, and it’s so funny!
The trick my German Shepard has mastered is shake. He is a pro. My shih-tzu on the other hand has mastered the art of manipulation. He knows how to work me and guilt trip me into anything. Though he has never quite gotten the hang of sit, he’ll just do it when the Shepard does when they are both getting treats. I’ll count that…
This looks awesome! The first trick we always teach our boys (past and present) is to play catch with a tennis ball! We are baseball lovers and outfielders, so we like to think our kids should be passed down some of our knowledge! Sometimes, however, the nose gets in the way, and we are happy to know they might be infielders instead. Our current pups, Mojo and Mikko, love the squeaky tennis balls so sometimes we have a couple going at a time to get them to drop them!
The first trick we taught both of our pups was: Sit! And they seem to have really mastered it…a trick they just can’t seem to grasp would be: Roll-Over…it usually just turns into a weird lay-down and “pet my belly” type scene. 🙂
