I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

We have two HUGE rescue dogs, and the first trick I taught mine was sit-paw-other paw. He is so adorable and eager to shake hands when you ask for his paw!! I love it, melts my heart every time.
I’ve always wondered about BarkBox so I’m glad to finally see someone review it.
I have a corgi-poo (corgi poodle mix) and he seems to go through toys weekly, like destroys them so I’m often torn between signing up for this b/c he’d possibly destroy the toys quicker than it’d be worth it financially or if it would be beneficial b/c we’d be getting automatically restocked.
Anyway, on to the trick, my dog Tanner is quite impressive with his tricks…his first one, no lie, was called “bust-a-move” that my husband taught him in 1 day. I’ve included the link to his youtube video.

The first trick I taught my Pomchi (Pomeranian Chihuahua) Callie was to high five. She is a total pro at it. She jumps on her hind legs and reaches both paws up. So I guess it’s technically a 10-five…
I could never get Callie to play dead. She is too eager to please me so she can get her treat. She rolls on her side then jumps back up. Or she just does a complete rollover which is great but that’s not the trick I commanded! I’ve given up on it.
Manchester was a rescue, so he’s been difficult to teach tricks, but he tries! The first trick I taught him was sit. We’re still working on paw – he stands up to lick me every time I reach for it :-).
I have twins! Poodle/Bichon/Maltese mix – Jazz and Lovie.
I first taught Jazz how to fetch and bring a ball back to me and Lovie has mastered the handshake and she also smiles! They regularly harass the neighbors cats (who love lounging outside in the sun – it’s hilarious).
What was the first trick you taught your dog? The first trick we taught our dog was sit because it seemed like the natural first choice. The best trick we taught our dog was high five. He’s so cute when he does it because he almost falls over.
What is one trick your dog could never quite master? Drop it! He loves his toys and does not want to let them go- ever! He’ll only drop them in exchange for food. He’s the boss of our house for sure.
Dogs are the best! I can’t imagine life without them!
What a great gift for dogs! I first taught Cooper how to give his Paw! I’m still a sucker for that simple trick. I bought my husband a book called 101 dog tricks so he knows a bunch, but the one he is still having a difficult time learning is how to “say his prayers”
He puts his paws up on your arm and tucks his head but then he gets distracted with the smell of the treat and doesn’t quite finish!!
Mito’s first trick was “stand”; he would jump around on his back paws whenever treats were out so I learned to control the jump to a steady stand! 🙂 he has never mastered “speak”; he will walk away from a treat if I try to long to get him to speak on command!
Nala knew how to sit and shake when we rescued her. The first tricks we taught her were “speak”, “down”, and “roll over”. Rolling over is still a struggle at times especially on hardwood floors 😉
I never had to teach my dog Charlie how to sit because he just started doing it on his own. He’s pretty much a genius. So since he had already mastered sit, the first trick I actually taught him was high five. The one we are still trying to master is roll over. I just don’t think it’s going to happen. 🙂
She’s such a smarty pants! She loves to shake and… does not love to “go lay down” when we’re eating dinner.
my dalmatian has mastered “FREEZE!” but not so much fetch….she usually just runs out to the ball and leaves it where it landed.
My dogs would go crazy for this box! The first thing they learned was “sit”- so basic! For some reason, neither of them have ever been able to master “roll over”.
The first tricks I taught all of my dogs (Chihuahua, Lab and Weimeraner)was to sit, lay down and shake. Once they mastered those, I taught them how to speak, stay and play “hide and go seek”. My husband tells them to stay while I go find a place to hide in the house. As soon as he says okay, they go crazy trying to find me and get so excited when they finally do. They LOVE that game!!!
The first trick I ever taught my boy Olliver is “Wait”… we intended it to be used before we allowed him to eat his food, but it has since become our go-to move. To Ollie, “wait” means “STOP – don’t do whatever it is”. We use it to get him to slow down on walks, to avoid him catching any unfortunatelyslow woodland creatures, etc.
The one trick he never quite got the hang of was the seated position to roll over when you yell “Bang!” I always thought that would be a fun one, but anything we practiced he would stare at me like I was boring him to death. 🙂
Love BarkBox! I have always wanted to try it.
Aside from a few basics, I taught my lab, Hannah, the “hula dance”. Basically, if you say, “Hannah, do the hula!” she’ll immediately wiggle all around. It’s adorable haha
The first “trick” we taught Charlie was to sit. Still pretty much the only thing he knows how to do! Sometimes he’ll drop his ball when we say “drop” but even then not so much!
The first trick Duke learned was sit. He still cannot master a pro longed stay! Way to excited for that!!
Max can sit and shake hands, but he’s not real consistent with down. Great giveaway… I’m sure Max would love to win!
Shake a paw was her first and last trick 😉
first trick we taught our vizsla, Bogey– which we got from mountaintop vizslas after reading about Sadie— was to sit and we taught him at the breeders house at 6 weeks old the day we picked him! he has been such a fast learner. we can teach him almost any trick in one sitting except for “roll over”. haven’t figured that one out. “leave it” with a treat on his nose has been a difficult one too. we aren’t giving up on that one though! i think its hilarious to see him go cross-eyed when the treat is sitting on his nose!
My sweet Gidgitt (border collie) first trick we taught her was to sit and she has never caught on to stay. She is always excited to go go go go!!!
We love Bark Box! Anna, my German Shepherd/Hound mix first learned to sit. She’s only six months, so we are still working on other tricks. She gets a little too excited when we work on Tricks for Treats, and will often go through her whole arsenal of tricks before we even request anything. 🙂
The first trick we taught our pup was sit. He can’t quite master crawl. He starts out great on the ground , but can’t keep his butt down…it is funny even though not quite correct 😉
Sawyer is great at sitting and then dancing for treats. He is NOT good at laying down! I know he would love to get a BarkBox!
The first trick Sprite learned to perform was “sit,” followed by “lay down.” This concludes the list of commands Sprite follows.
I have been contemplating bark box since i have a 10 month of french bulldog at home. The first trick i taught him was sit. very easy to teach that one . Then i have a hard time getting him to stay. He seems to act like a magnet/shadow. Everywhere and i mean everywhere i walk in the house he follows at my feet. So the word stay means nothing to him 🙂 I am sure he would love Bark box because i buy toys from chewy.com and when those boxes get delivered he already knows theyre for him!
My lab first learned how to sit and does very well. But she will not lay down. Not even for a treat!
My dog’s first trick was “sit”
Gracie, my Puggle, first learned how to sit. She can easily be bribed with treats! Mac our Maltipoo marches to his own beat and never really wanted to learn anything. He is a sweetie though, so it’s ok!
My Pitt Ember would LOVE Bark Box! Her trick that impresses guests often is putting treats on her nose, making her hold the position for a few moments, and then saying “Take It” and she noses the treat into the air and into her mouth! We even did this once with a little toad we found outside, but she wouldn’t eat it! She just sat there looking at it!
I tried to teach my dog to “shake” his paw. So I’ll say “paw” and he’ll lift his paw to shake. Only problem is he shakes with his left paw! Can’t break him of the habit 😉
Ziggy has mastered the “sit” command, but that’s pretty much it. I could never get him to shake, which I think is the coolest trick.
My husband and I just adopted a puppy and have been thinking about getting a bark box subscription so this would be perfect! The first trick we taught Dexter was “sit”. He has also mastered “down” and “Speak”. We are still working on “stay” and “drop it”!
My vizsla Mya can’t roll over to save her life. Luckily, she’s still adorable without mastering this basic trick.
The first trick I have taught my golden, Emma, is “downward dog”! She loves doing it because her treat is getting scratched right at the top of her tail, which is her favorite! I have been working on play dead, but she just can’t catch on – she wants to jump up and play right away!
We first taught our puppy to sit 🙂 First things first! She hasn’t quite gotten the “come” command down, but she is really good with “No”!
My puppy brewer would love this 🙂 he is a black lab mix. Brewer learned the basics pretty quickly but recently we taught him to “hug”. Probably the cutest thing ever. He literally wraps his front legs around our necks and snuggles his head into your neck. Best puppy snuggles 🙂
The first trick our dog Heidi learned was to sit and shake. She even knows right from left when you ask her to shake……well, at least she gets it right 50% of the time. The thing she can’t seem to master is drop it. She’s a high strung Weimaraner who wants what she wants. 😉
We have a Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Sherman. His first trick was to chase a sock ball down the hall way. Now he is a master waterfowl retriever. He can’t quite master holding a treat on his nose, just too excited I guess!
Does getting his way with puppy eyes count? ha
First actual trick I taught Boone was to sit and shake. He’s pretty good at them and looovves getting rewarded for it.
Now he gets ADD when I try to teach him new tricks, so he hasn’t quite mastered the playing shy/hiding trick. Still working on it though! maybe he’ll get a Barkbox as a reward when he learns it…
Love the giveaway. Thanks!
We have a 7 month old Vizsla puppy named Boda who would loovveeee this!
The first trick we taught her was to ring her bell to go outside! But she quickly learned that she could also ring it to go PLAY outside, or eat grass or chase flies…. so she took to ringing it every 3 minutes. Silly puppy.
We haven’t yet mastered ‘follow’ – not pulling when walking on the leash. But she’s gotten ‘calm down’ which is HUGE for an over-excited puppy!
My two English Bulldogs Delilah and Zoey would love to win.
Both girl’s first trick was to sit.
Delilah is currently leaning to “wait” which is proving difficult to master.
Zoey is full of spunk and has yet be able to “lay down” like her big sister Delilah.
One is able to complete a mini obstacle course! Still can’t get him to fetch though!
Sit was definitely the first trick our puppy mastered. We currently working on stay, but we’re not quite there yet!
Knoxley is our perfect little (ok not so little) 8 month old Bluetick Coonhound. Her first trick was sit and it was easy peasy so I thought the rest would follow suit…..not so much (I think she has ADHD) 🙂 She has mastered stay on certain days, but her most recent trick that I’ve been working on forever is shake. Which I’m proud to say she has mastered to a T…..thanks to none other than peanut butter. She’s like her momma and loves it!!
I’ve followed Barkbox on IG for awhile now and their posts are always so adorable and make me smile:) The first trick I taught my dog Bailey was how to sit, unfortunately she never learned how to come back when I call her unless I give her several pieces of cheese.. this is a big problem when she sees a squirrel (she’s lucky she’s cute;)) thanks for the giveaway!
This would be great for my Meeshy. We just had a new baby and her world has definitely been rocked so this would be a great treat.
The first trick and really the only trick she does with consistency is sit:)
My pup actually learned all his tricks in the span of about two hours. Quite impressive, if I do say so myself! The first trick he learned was the high-five (always a crowd pleaser), but he could never master the roll. He’s about 80lbs, so I give him credit because there was never enough room to get his big body around haha!
Benji ‘s first trick he mastered was a high five.. To the point where he tried to give high fives when he wanted something without us asking!
