I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

Too cute! First trick waS to ring the bell on the door when she had to go out. She did it but didnt last long! The one thing she cant master is roll-over; although she has no problem doing it after we brush her real good!!
The first trick we ever taught our dog was sit. The one trick she never got was roll over. These boxes are so cute! 🙂
The first trick we taught our beagle was to play dead and it is hilarious to watch! The first trick we taught our lab, Adele, was to give Hi Fives. Pretty fun when you meet new people!
what a perfect giveaway! My Shorkie, Max, is always wanting to play, so the first thing I wanted to teach him was fetch…he’s also quite good at playing dead…it is so funny to see him drop to the ground! Crossing our fingers and paws!
The first trick my black lab Bailey learned was sit. Pretty basic, but we built up from that. Now she knows shake, high five, lay down and roll over. She has yet to master “hush”. When she’s barking like crazy, my husband will say “hush” and she’ll bark back. Every.time. Even when she’s quiet and he says it, she’ll bark. Somehow she got programmed to bark when you say “hush”. It’s actually quite funny.
My dog has yet to master…walking on a leash lol. It has been 3 years.
Our lab puppy, Kiva, learned her first trick at 5 months and has been rocking it every day ever since. You can balance ANYTHING on her nose and tell her to freeze. She’ll nearly go cross-eyed as she stares at it. After about 10 seconds you say “OK!” and she flicks the treat off her nose and into her mouth. She would love the Barkbox!
Dublin’s first trick was “sit”, which lead to a variety of other tricks including a “fist bump”! However, no matter how hard we try, she can’t seem to understand “roll over”.
Our first trick was sit. Pretty boring but really worthwhile!! He’s a really good dog and has mastered what we’ve tried to teach him. . . he does take a long time to quit jumping on visitors though.
My labradoodle (her name is Sadie too!!) learned to sit, with treats of course, first. But, the one thing she does not do is fetch! She’ll run as fast as she can to go get the ball or toy, pick it up, and walk a few steps but always drops it! I’ll still go pick it up to throw it again of course…anything to get her running in!
I rescued my pup when he was about 8. He was really poorly trained and never neutered, so he’s still pretty sassy. We taught him how to lay down (mostly) and never really got him to master anything else. Either he’s too smart to do tricks or too independent– either way, we love him all the same. He’s now a crotchety old man, who gets away with a lot because he still looks like a puppy.
The first trick was Sit! And Keely had mastered rollover but after the first 2 years, she now refuses to do it! So silly!
Our first trick was sit, far from exciting but still fun!
Taught my boy a trick where I place a treat on his nose and he stares at it, quivering and cross eyed, until I see “free” then he flips it up in the air and eats it.
This is for my friend’s dogs Guinness and Dudley. They were taught sit with no problem. Guinness could not master sitting plus paw and Dudley could not master the high five.
We adopted our dog and we got lucky because she actually already knew a lot of tricks! Unfortunately he has a bit of anxiety though, and hasn’t really mastered “Stay”. She gets too nervous!
Duke mastered sit first, but my favorite trick hes mastered is high five. Nothing like getting a high five from your favorite pup. I’m hoping he will master roll over some day, but so far it’s a no go.
Our first trick was “shake.” We are currently working on getting her to do her business on command.
First thing I taught Abi is to sit and shake a paw! I love shaking “paws” with her! And…she won’t fetch no matter how hard I try!
Sasha learned to sit first! We are still working on shake….
I wouldn’t say that we taught our dog tricks, I’d say our dog taught us tricks… such as fetch me that bacon bite, or sit and watch me while I act crazy in the living room because I need attention! He doesn’t exactly obey lol. I guess one thing he learned was to sit when he wanted people food. He will sit at the dinner table waiting for us to share what we have! Spoiled rotten, I tell ya!
The first trick we ever taught our dog was sit! She’s one smart cookie and even knows how to high five! That being said…she has never learned to roll over and has no desire to do so. She’s a bit of a diva. 🙂
What was the first trick you taught your dog?
Sit!
The first trick I taught was “sit.” Easy but probably one of the most important “tricks.” However, I could never get the same rescued Boston Terrier mix to master roll over or shake though 🙁
Our dog’s first trick was to sit and leave it 🙂
The first thing we taugh my dog, Rothko, was to sit. But instead of using “sit” as the command we taught him to “chill”!!!
The first trick was sit! Luckily he never sasses at this command. We cannot get our sweet boy to shake for the life of us. He constantly wants to “hold hands” – in the car, in bed, etc – so we thought it would be easy but apparently he only wants to paw us on his own terms. 🙂
The first trick I taught my dog was “shake.” Now he automatically gives you his paw whenever he wants something! I think one trick he will never master is “stay.” Useful command, but oh well.
I aught him to sit and that is pretty much all he can do.
The first trick I taught Molly was shake. It actually took a really long time for sit, and for some reason she still doesn’t understand “lay down” unless she knows she’s being rewarded in some way. She’s smart like that 🙂
Love this giveaway!! The first trick was “sit.” The one he’s still kind of iffy on is “roll over.” Not sure if this counts as a trick, but I’ve taught him to wear a sleep mask at night when we go to bed. It is SO ridiculous, but he’s so cute!!
My dog’s first trick was “sit” … we’ve never been able to master “lay down.”
Cooper’s first one was the standard sit; we progressed through shake and lie down when we hit a wall with “bang” or play dead…he got so freaked out he peed a little! Poor guy… We’re gonna stick with the basics 🙂
The first trick we taught Peg was to balance a treat on her nose and then snap it up with her mouth. She’s pretty good at it!
She’s a Nova Scotia Duck Toller and the cutest thing around! She was bred to be a hunting dog but is afraid of the sound of gun shots, so we got her instead 🙂
The first trick I taught my dog was shake or maybe sit. He can do a few tricks like spin and speak. He can only roll over if he’s outside in the grass. For some reason he struggled doing it indoors. I taught him sit and shake so he wouldn’t charge his food as soon as it was in the bowl.
First trick that Molly learned was “Stay” and that is also the one she struggles with most. You can definitely see the struggle within her to either listen to Mom or go jump on the visitor!!
We have worked so hard on getting my dog to roll over, and I just don’t think it is physically possible for her! I can roll her over on her back, but she just falls to the side… womp womp.
I have an almost 2 year old female German Shepherd named Shelby.
1. The first trick we taught her was the basic “Sit-Stay-Leave it” command combo..we would make her leave a treat until she started drolling..so funny
2. the trick that she could and still hasn’t mastered is “roll over”…she attempts to roll over, but can’t quite make it all the way over. i dont know if it freaks her out to be upside down or what, but its never been something that she can do easily or on the first try.
We have a 4 month old golden retriever named Zoey! She learned to sit, shake & lay down all in one day! We are still having a little trouble with the potty training!
My dog Bradley has lots of tricks with his tennis ball! I want to take him to some kind of agility class because he’s fast, agile, and eager to please
First trick was to sit. He knows many tricks but I think it takes his brain a bit longer to process as he completes the trcik after about 10 seconds after asking him to do it!
The first trick he learned was sit and the one he never could quite get was twirl!! (spin around) Great giveaway… I’ve been wanting to get this as a gift for my sister’s dog!!
So we have a 3 year old Puggle named Lola…and she’s not the sharpest tool in the shed but boy is she cute! The first trick we taught her was SIT…and it took her awhile, but as long as there aren’t a ton of people around she usually will do it! Lay down is one she still doesn’t get…every time I point down I’m pretty sure she thinks I”m pointing at food and she gets very distraught when there is no food there! But I love her and can’t imagine life without her…she would love a box full of goodies each month! 🙂
I love my pup! She too will also never die, just like Sadie. Mila’s first trick was most dogs fist trick, sit. While she caught on to sitting really fast and immediately started using it as currency to get what she wanted – she is incapable of rolling over. It always ends in an odd game of squirming on the floor and repeatedly returning to a sitting position in hopes of getting the treat.
My dog Gabby’s first trick was to shake, which she learned to do with both paws. The one trick we just can’t master is to play dead because she isn’t exactly light at 75lb or easy to flip onto her back.
Theodore already knew how to sit when I adopted him but as a senior his first trick to master with me was laying down and rolling onto his belly for rubs. He loves when he gets a good belly rub and some treats.
Our chiweenie never learned a trick – at all. She is just cute. Our terrier mix sits really well. Our inherited lab has never learned a trick and struggles with stay a lot.
Dolly learned to sit and then give me her paw so she could get a treat!
Our first trick with Coop was sit and stay, which still works until this day. He has a hard time with roll over, just because his legs don’t quite like to move that way!
I had my dog for about 5 minutes and taught her to sit. She is sharp!
I haven’t been able to get to stop chasing squirrels though. Is that a trick?
