I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

One of my favorite “tricks” is when my dog howls along with sirens. It’s hilarious and she thinks she is helping the ambulance find their destination!
Karla says
My puppy’s first trick was to ‘dance my puppy’s first trick was to ‘dance’.
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
Unless you count “sit” and “lay down”, the first trick we taught red toy poodle was “high five”. It also never ceases to impress people! 🙂
Tory @ tory of my life says
Our dog Tia’s first trick was sit… boring I know, but an important thing for dogs to know! At one point she did know roll over, but then got too fat and couldn’t make it all the way over, so I guess that was one trick she couldn’t exactly master her whole life :/ She’s lost some weight now, but is so old that I think her “roll over” days are over.
Ashley B says
The first trick I taught my dog was to lay down but he could never quite get “rollover”!!
Claire says
My dog is a bug (Boston Terrier and Pug) mix named Sadie also! Her first trick was learning how to high five. She still can’t quite figure out “roll over” though!
Stormey Walker says
My dogs first trick was sit and the one he could
Never master was roll over he just rolls on his back and expects a tummy rub lol
Anie U says
Our newest doggy is a natural fetcher so it didn’t require much training but he’s great at bringing you the paper!
Kelli Painter says
Our GSD’s first trick was the typical sit and stay. Zeek never could quite get the hang of rollover though. I completely agree with you I am stupid in love with the joy our baby brings us!
Rachel says
Well, my beagle Molly learned to sit first thing. She still thinks that every time she sits, she’ll get a treat.
She doesn’t get “lay down” though. She’ll lay for a second and then flop over on her back for belly scratches.
Such a ham! 🙂
Crystal says
The 1st trick we taught our Brittany was to give you her paw for shake. River has learned every trick we’ve tried teach her however teaching her to roll over has backfired since she does it without asking when you have a treat in your hand.
Traci says
First trick was simple: sit! Our 6 mo old English bulldog is not quite mastering roll over yet, though. 🙂
Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More says
My girls taught our dog sit first. Next came shake and just a couple of weeks ago, down. Right now they are working on roll over with her. She is having a lot of trouble with this one!
Stacey says
The first trick we taught our boxer, Levi, was to sit…..he has never mastered the stay as he is a velcro dog 🙂
Kris petty says
Trick”?. I guess shake… But I love when they heel!
Jessie Y. says
One of the first tricks we taught our dog was “touch.” She touches her nose to your hand wherever it is. Supposedly, this is a basic skill for service dogs in training. Ours never really made it past that trick, but it’s a fun one!
Barbie says
Sit, lay down and rollover!
Kaley says
I have two dogs- they could not be more different from each other!!
My pit/lab is brilliant, the first ‘trick’ she learned was probably play dead- I pretend shoot her and she dramatically falls to the ground- took all of 5 minutes! She has many many tricks in her bag.
My retriever cross is so full of love- but not so good with the tricks haha. The ONLY trick she learned is sit pretty, basically sitting on her bum with her paws in the air. she is toooooo cute.
They are seriously such a joy and I couldn’t imagine life without their personalities to brighten my day.
caylin says
I prefer to call them dog “SKILLS” 🙂 I love when my black lab stays on command. Even with me walking away.
Jenna Ferguson says
My two pugs, Munchkin and Lola, have never been great with tricks! They both know “sit”, but only if they’re enticed by a treat (typical pugs!). They would love to receive some yummy treats and fun toys 🙂
Cory says
Dexters first trick was to learn to “talk” – you to her to talk to you and the grumbles and barks really quietly. It’s quite entertaining!
Emily says
My dog’s first “trick” was to sit. After that he learned all the tricks in the book- except rolling over. He knows what it means- he just hates it so much he wines when we ask him to and gives us sad eyes. haha!
Lauren says
The first trick I taught my yorkie was “come”. I knew this would be helpful when he wasn’t near me. He is great off leash and as soon as he hears it he comes running. I taught him this by saying he favorite food then the word “come”…so for him it was cheese…of course lol…so I said “cheese come” then give him a peice. And eventually all I had to say was “come” and now he doesn’t even need the treat. Since he has also learned…sit, stay, paw, other paw, roll over, lay down, spin and dance. He also knows all the hand signals as well.
My little yorkie is quite smart…in my eyes anyway… but the one thing I just couldnt get him to learn was to speak on command…not sure why…but still till this day at 11 years old…I can’t get him to do it.

My dog Trixie first learned sit. 🙂
The one trick we are still having a hard time with is play dead. She just has too much energy to play dead I guess lol!
Molly says
We’ve tried so hard for roll over and our pup just can’t do it! He’s a rescue dog so being on his back (aka: vulnerable) is tough. He’ll get there someday!
Nikki says
My pup’s first trick was to shake. She still only does it if she gets a treat!
Heather says
My dogs first “trick” other than sitting and staying was to sit pretty!
Meredith says
Lizzie’s first trick would have to be “sit” although at one year, she still doesn’t have much self control if there is anybody else around!
Laura says
I think my dog’s first trick was “sit” as we thought it was an important command for her to follow. However, we quickly followed that with “high five” which she does with her left paw and “shake” which she does with her right paw. Our energy filled dog loves to play fetch but has not mastered the return after fetching an object. She will run in the general direction of whoever throws the object to be fetched but will not bring it directly back. It does get us some exercise though when we have to chase it down.

Polly’s firag

We have a deaf American Bulldog. After a family returned him to his breeder, we knew we had to have him. Since he can’t hear, we started teaching him sign language. The first one we got down was “speak”. We made it possible by giving him Doritos as his reward. I’m telling you, if they’re is anything you want to teach your dog, cheeses Doritos are the answer!
Carol says
The first trick our Chesapeake learned was to roll over. Our lab couldn’t quite master it:)
Caroline says
Our puppy’s first trick was to shake her paw. She’s still working on bringing the ball BACK to us when we play fetch! 🙂
Jaclyn Drager says
We taught our dog Diesel to sit first. He never learned to stay, he goes whenever & wherever he wants 🙂
Lymor says
I have a lab puppy with so much energy! He would love new toys and treats 🙂 His first trick was definitely sit. We’re still working on mastering walking on the leash without pulling…
Karin says
I think the first trick I taught my dog was “circles.” LOL, don’t ask me why…I have no idea, but it’s pretty cute! I just say, “circles” and my boy just starts doing his thing, twirling in circles : )
Vicki says
The first trick we taught our dog Tala was the standard “sit”. However, the concept of “drop it” is lost on her! Luckily she’s a pretty good dog and doesn’t usually pick up things that aren’t hers! 🙂
Christine D says
The first trick I taught my dog was how to fetch. What dog doesn’t know how to play fetch?! He loves it now.
The trick (or command) my dog cannot master is STAY. He always wants to tag along! 🙂
Blair says
I just got a puppy – she’s a 4 1/2 month old Labradoodle- and I know she would love this! Her first real “trick” is shake!

Nicole Jenkins says
The first trick we taught our dog was sit. She knows quite a few tricks now, but she never did learn how to roll over.
Bethany says
I taught my dog how to sit and shake at the same time which I thought was pretty cool but now every time we tell him to sit he lifts his paw too. It’s funny when he does it to people he doesn’t know, it’s like he is introducing himself!
Nikki says
My Vizsla came to us at the age of 2 knowing the basics so the first trick we taught him was “bang”. Mat never quite mastered “basket” to put his toys away!
Elizabeth says
The first trick my catahoula leopard dog Layla learned was “come here”! Not really a trick but still was difficult for her to master! She still won’t roll over, but I think she can and she just thinks its too much work.
Sarah N. says
I just adopted a 12 wk old rescue pup who would ADORE a bark box!! We are currently working on sit and come. She’s catching on quickly! My family’s dog always struggled to master “lay down”, which was always a shock to me.
Natalie says
My dog’s first trick was being able to shake his paw. But he still has not mastered heeling.
Jess M says
ooooh I’ve always been tempted to try one of these for our dogs! First “trick” or command our oldest dog learned was to sit….and neither of them have mastered the “stay.” There are just too many exciting things going on all around!
lara says
Her first trick was probably to sit, if that counts as a trick! She’s 12 and she still can’t roll over 🙂
