Last night Ryan and I discovered stand up comedians on Netflix. I’m not sure what has taken us so long to realize you can easily stream tons of different stand up comedy routines, but I’m glad we are finally “in the know.”
We decided to watch Aziz Ansari’s “Buried Alive” and could not stop laughing.
Neither Ryan nor I had ever seen his stand up before and agreed that we’d now absolutely love to see him live. His comments about marriage, babies and dating in the social media world had us cracking up for slightly more than an hour.
Watching Aziz Ansari last night sparked a conversation about our all-time favorite comedians. Here’s a short list of some of the comedians whose stand up routines make my stomach hurt from laughing so hard:
- Ellen Degeneres “Here and Now”
- Sinbad “Where You Been?”
- Robin Williams “Live On Broadway”
- Ron White “They Call Me Tater Salad”
- Tim Allen “Live On Stage”
- Dave Chappelle “Killin’ Them Softly”
I’ve actually seen Sinbad, Ron White and Robin Williams live and all were absolutely hysterical. (If you’re looking for comedians who are super funny but also clean, check out Sinbad and Ellen!)
Breakfast
Breakfast this morning began with a hot mug of coffee…
And ended with a freaky deaky green protein pancake!
Off to work!
Question of the Morning
- Who are some of your favorite comedians?
- What comedians have you seen live that you think have a “must see” stand up routine?
I love listening to a good comedian so I’m going to have to look up some of your suggestions!
I recently saw Chelsea Handler-she is hilarious, but slightly offensive if you are sensitive. Her books are also really funny!
I freaking love Aziz. I want to hire him as my best friend.
I second this! Aziz is cry til you’re doubled-over hilarious. Parks n Rec just KILLS me! I’m definitely book-marking the rest of those skits to watch too!
Hands down, George Carlin! Greatest comedian ever! I also know a lot of people that really liked Mitch Hedberg
Brian Regan is also very funny, with clean humor. I saw him live and he’s excellent!
Seinfeld! He’s absolutely my favorite and does live shows. I’ve been wanting to see him when he comes to Phoenix again, usually once a year.
Gabriel Inglesias better known as “Fluffy” is the funniest comedian I’ve ever seen. His live show is even better than his specials. I think you can watch one of his specials on Netflix too! I also like him because he keeps it pretty clean.
I SECOND THIS!! we’re always on the floor laughing in tears from this guy!! his impersonations and sounds he makes are awesome too lol
Eddie Izzard! HIs show “Dressed to Kill” is the funniest act I’ve ever seen.
I love Kathy Griffin, and I actually “read” her book when I was training for my last marathon. By “read” I mean, listened to her book on iTunes and it was awesome and funny at the same time!
We saw Aziz live a couple of weeks ago. We saw him a couple of years ago, too. He’s hilarious. You two should definitely see him live if you get a chance. 🙂
I rarely comment – but I read your blog daily. It is always fun! Anyways, I love Brian Reagan and Jim Gaffigan they are both hilarious without using a lot of fowl language or being crude. Me and my husband always listen to them when we are on road trips (and we don’t have to sensor them with small kids in the car)!
Thank you for reading! And commenting!
I took my husband to see Aziz for his 30th birthday, and we had a blast. He is soooo funny!!
I love him! I’m also a huge fan of Kevin Hart’s stand up on Netflix and Joe Koy on YouTube.
Louis CK is amazing live and on tv. I’ve seen him 4-5 times. His show on FX is hilarious too.
Love love love Louis CK. My boyfriend and I have been dying to see him live!
One of my fave comedians is Chris D’Elia. He’s hilarious. I’m excited because I just bought tix to see him do stand up later this summer!
He is HILARIOUS!! I made my girlfriends watch his bit about drunk girls with me and we were dying!
You MUST check out Jim Gaffigan! As someone who really doesn’t like much standup comedy, I think he’s incredible. And clean to boot!
I had no idea there were comedians on Netflix. I could use some laughs, and I do have a Netflix account…!
Great post! I saw Aziz live recently and it was an awesome experience. He’s HILARIOUS and so real right?!
YES! Ryan and I shared so many of his thoughts about babies right now and it cracked us up!
John Mulaney is hilarious. I’ve seen Jim Gaffigan and Daniel Tosh live and they were both out of this world funny. Totally different styles but a riot. I live about 8 hours from home so I usually will put on the Aziz Pandora station for a couple hours and get bits from all those guys!
robin williams weapons of self destruction is also really good. the current aziz set is not as good as the one before it, which i can’t come up with the name for. more actual laughs than the uncomfortable laughs i felt filled buried alive.
HA! Did he talk about his nerdy little cousin? He’s so funny! I saw Kathy Griffin live a few years ago. Just be sure to keep up on current events in entertainment, or you might not get half her jokes.
RUSSEL PETERS!!! AND HE IS ON NETFLIX proud canadian right here 🙂 off to watch asiz now!
I love Sara Schaefer. She had her own live show on MTV for a couple of years and she is absolutely hilarious. Her sister happens to be the director at my daughter’s school, so each year, Sara comes to Flagstaff and does a benefit performance. It’s been fun to watch how the crowd has grown as she has become more well-known.
Like everyone else I recommend Jim Gaffigan, but I also love Craig Ferguson and Zach Galifianakis – you can find them both on Netflix too.
Aziz live is great! I saw Chelsea Perretti (Brooklyn 99) open up for Aziz a few years ago and she was pretty fantastic herself. I think the only other comedian I’ve seen live is Michael Ian Black. It was raunchier than I expected, but not in a bad way. I loved it.
John Mulaney “New in Town” is probably my favorite special other than Chapelle’s “Killin’ them Softly” which will ALWAYS be my favorite. (New in Town is on Netflix, check it out!) Donald Glover’s stand up is also pretty funny and Kat Williams’ “Pimp Chronicles” is up there as well.
The other thing you might like on Netflix is Mike Birbiglia’s “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend.” It’s not a typical stand up special, more like a stand up/movie hybrid. I laughed and cried which is all you can ask for, right?
Thanks for the recommendations!
Oh my god YES John Mulaney’s New in Town is hilarious!
I loved Mike Birbiglia too….I’ve never felt so emotional watching a comedian! Tears! And a great storyteller too.
You’ve got to watch Angelah Johnson’s “That’s how we do it” on Netflix. She’s hilarious!
I looooove Peter Kay! He absolutely cracks me up.
Definitely Louis C.K.!! He’s hilarious!=D
I LOVE Aziz Ansari! You have to also watch Donald Glover’s stand up! AND watch Mike Birgiglia. He’s a great, clean comedian!
Brian Regan! He is absolutely hilarious and also clean. I’m going to check out your list! Sometimes you just need a laugh.
Yes Aziz!!!alll of his shows on Netflix are LOL funny
I didn’t know this about Netflix! I tend not to get into comedians because they’re never clean, but I do love Brian regan because he’s pretty clean! I don’t know much about the cleanliness of tig notaro as I’ve only seen two short clips of her and a couple of talk show interviews, but I rewatched her taylor Dane routine last night…hilarious! I don’t know if tig is on Netflix, but she’s easy enough to find on YouTube.
Aziz is great! Recently I’ve been listening to Amy Schumer and she’s pretty good too. Dane Cook’s older stuff is probably my fav though. That and Ellen; she’s a classic! 🙂
Now that you discovered comedians on Netflix, next time you have a bit of drive check them out on Pandora. One of my favorite Pandora stations when I want some driving entertainment is Dane Cook (NOT clean….haha)
I love Aziz. I also really like Russell Peters (although he can be kind of crude sometimes!)
I love Sebastian Maniscalco- he’s not as well known as some of the others, but really funny! I think there are 2 of his specials on Netflix now- “Sebastian Live”, and “What’s Wrong With People?” He’s worth checking out!
I LOVE watching stand-up comedy. I’ve always wanted to go see a show live. And I had no idea Netflix had this option, I will definitely be checking it out. Awesome.
Another funny person to watch is Daniel Tosh. Check him out!
Check out Louis CK and also David Spade’s new release on Comedy Central, it was on last week. SO hilarious!!! We’ve seen Louis CK twice and he’s my favorite. Now I want to go see Spade! Comedy was our first date…Gilbert Gottfried!
Have you seen Aziz on The Getaway on Esquire channel? I had never laughed SO hard in my life as he galavanted around Hong Kong.

I’m not sure if anyone else has mentioned this or not, but you can also listen to comedians on pandora. It plays snippets of their acts that are usually on netflix, but you get a wide variety. I’m a huge fan of all comedians, even the one’s that are not clean, but that’s just me. Favorites include: Louis CK, Aziz Ansari, John Mulaney, Amy Schumer (not clean at all, but she is so funny to me), and Kevin Hart.
Love Brian Regan 🙂
I saw Aziz live. I could barely breathe the entire time! He was so great!
I’m a huge Jerry Seinfeld fan. If you haven’t seen or heard “I’m Telling You for the Last Time”, I highly suggest you check it out 🙂
Jo Koy is hilarious! I discovered him on Chelsea Lately, as he is a recurring guest on the roundtable. I’ve seen him live a few times and he’s great! He has I think 2 comedy specials out, perhaps on DVD or netflix?
Jim Gaffigan. I love him so much and when he does the inner-thoughts of the audience, it’s hilarious. He is the one comedian I know I will laugh at consistently and at every joke.
I haven’t watched any of those! I will have to get on it! I’m a big fan of Kevin Hart and Jeff Dunham… I’ve watched their acts on tv over and over and over again!
Just saw Aziz live on Monday night (for the 2nd time) – he is HILARIOUS!
My absolute favorite comedian is Mitch Hedberg. He’s passed away now – but was hand’s down the best. Watch him :).
I’ve only seen standup once when my sister and I decided last minute to see Heather McDonald from Chelsea Lately and she was hilarious!
Comedians are the best….my hubby and I have wanted to see Aziz live. Sometimes I listen to comedy shows on Pandora Radio on my way to work…great way to start the day!
Love your blog, emailed you once a while ago and you were so sweet. Still a reader. 🙂
If you’re looking for a good comedian, truly a good laugh and clean guy is Tim Hawkin. He is a Christian stand up comedian and outrageously FUNNY. With you two being involved in Church and your faith, you no doubt will find him hilarious as well!! 🙂
Thank you, Angie!!
