Today’s mid-day meal included a salad that was bigger than my face.
In the salad:
- Shredded cabbage
- Chopped carrot
- Chopped Granny Smith apple
- Chopped celery
- Chicken deli meat
- Annie’s Naturals lite honey mustard vinaigrette
So good!
I also served a quesadilla on the side, which I made by heating up a stick of string cheese on top of a whole wheat tortilla in the microwave for about 50 seconds until the cheese melted. I then spread the cheese around with a knife and folded the tortilla over, quesadilla-style! Yes you can make quesadillas in the break room my friends!
Now for some sweet talk!
Best (Sweet) Thing I Ever Ate
Last night Ryan and I sat on the couch drooling all over the place as we watched The Best Thing I Ever Ate: Sweet Tooth on the Food Network. The stars of various Food Network shows detailed the best sweet treat they’ve ever enjoyed from random restaurants across the U.S.
After watching the stars eat delectable Nutella crepes (<– totally just spelled that like “craps” on accident and laughed at my desk), peanut butter and jelly doughnuts, chocolate mousse and meringue crème cake, we wiped up our drool and started talking about the best sweet thing we’ve ever had from a restaurant.
My mind immediately went to the Houston’s hot fudge sundae with roasted sugar pecans that Ryan and I order every time we visit the restaurant (which was recently renamed Hillstone) in Winter Park, Florida.
My heart also skips a beat for concrete (aka extremely thick frozen custard) from SweetBerries in Sarasota, Florida. Clearly I’m an ice cream lover!
After pining over delicious desserts, Ryan and I decided that once we’re retired, we’re going on a food tour of the United States and will stop at all of the restaurants mentioned on the show. I also plan to do some research into other highly-recommended restaurants… especially the hole-in-the-wall type joints that tend to be my favorite!
Please help me make my preemptive list of destinations and share details about the best sweet treat you’ve ever had from a restaurant: Where did you order it and what did you order?
If you’re not a fan of sweets, feel free to share the best meal you’ve ever experienced at a restaurant below!
P.S. The Fashion page was updated today! Be thankful that I didn’t update it yesterday because I looked like a wildebeest.
Rachel says
I must try that sundae! There’s like 3 Houstons (in Houston heh) so I have no excuse!
The best dessert has got to be either my grandma’s german chocolate cake OR a pizookie from BJ’s Brewhouse. OMG it’s like a deep dish cookie that’s not cooked all the way through and ice cream on top. It’s heavenly.
Sarah says
The Chocolate Suckao at Max Brenner’s is JUST RIDICULOUS!!! Thick melted chocolate that you suck up with a metal straw. That simple, that delicious. The white chocolate is my fave!! http://www.maxbrenner.com/menus.html
Mel (Mmm Stories) says
I totally have to second Max Brenner’s!! It is a restaurant dedicated to all things chocolate with multiple locations around the world! I went to the Tel Aviv location with my family and had the most amazingg waffles/ crepes/ chocolate pizza!
Amy B says
I have to “third” on the Max Brenner. I live in Manhattan and have sampled many an item off their menu. I mean, a restaurant devoted to chocolate…how could you say no?!
peanutbutterfingers says
just looked at their menu and OH MY GOSH.
Amy B says
Just make sure you wear an elastic waistband when you go 😉
Amy at TheSceneFromMe says
I had the best crepe there and some cocoa dusted onion rings too!
They have chocolate filled syringes, perfect for myself as a nurse!
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
I’m glad someone said Max Brenner. Anything on their menu is pretty much next to God. And they just opened one in Philly, too, if you get there before NYC 🙂
Shilpa says
I live SO close to the one in Philly but have yet to go there for dessert… I really need to do that. Every time I walk by the restaurant, all I can smell is chocolate. Yum!
Mel (Mmm Stories) says
YES it’s a must! I had a chocolate-gummy bear crepe! What?! So good!
Gillian Young says
Banana stuffed brioche French toast at the Twisted Fork in Vancouver!
And macarons at Pierre Hermes in Paris of course 🙂 Not in the US but worth the trip!!!
janetha says
Oh my gosh, I was watchign that show last night and they were showing a vanilla peanut butter with pretzels mixed into the nut butter. I was drooooling! Love that show!
Lisa says
I’m 20 weeks pregnant and just read the words Peanut butter and Jelly donut! Oh man I need one… now 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
congratulations!!!
Jenna says
just had the best dessert at shula’s steakhouse in center valley, PA. vanilla ice cream served in an “almond florentine basket” which is basically almonds and powdered sugar baked into a crispy basket. it’s healthy since it’s nuts and it’s baked not fried. i am telling myself that.
Melissa says
I’m not usually a huge citrus dessert person, (hello? where’s the chocolate???) but the key lime pie at Joe’s in Chicago is life changing. Life changing as in, a girl who never ever orders key lime anything is dreaming about this pie like a lost love. There’s also a coconut tart topped with dark chocolate fudge at The Common Grill in Chelsea, MI that totally makes me weak in the knees.
And now I have to go find something sweet to nibble on!
Chicago Cuisine Critique says
Yum that dessert looks awesome.
Jennifer says
Have you tried Captain Jack’s Buried Treasure from Orlando Ale House?? SO good! My fiance is from Orlando and I fell in love with Captain Jack the first time he took me!
Jordan P says
A huge fan of locopops in the Triangle, NC area! Gourmet frozen popsicles, modeled after the Mexican paleterias. Flavors include such things as: Pistachio, coconut carrot cake, Amaretto Latte, chocolate thin mint, Passionfruit Orange Blossom, cherry red currant… just to name a few!
Carrie says
i LOVE that show! it always gets me drooling and watching it whil eon the treadmill was a BAD idea!!.. the best dessert I ever ate was called Big Ol’ Cookie in a Bowl at en Embassy Suites in Chicago– i thnk the restaurant was attached to the hotel.. anway it was a GIANT WARM gooey chocolate hcip cookie in a bowl with 3 giant scoops of vanilla ice cream.. all gooey and melty and MASSIVe and i ate the whole thing myself, obviously
Amy says
Apple Dumplings with ice cream at the Dutch Eating Place in Reading Terminal Market in Philly! Knock your socks off sweet and cinnamon-y and creamy with the ice cream!
Mel (Mmm Stories) says
I caught a “Man vs Food” about the the biggest cinnamon roll and my family went to check it out in San Antonio, Texas. It was 3 lbs! They said it was amazing but obviously hard to finish.
This sounds like an awesome quest!
Kristen @ That Hoosier Girl says
I LOVE that show on Food Network! I also am a big fan of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives…and also have a life goal of visiting all of the restaurants featured 🙂 hehe
Laura @ prettylittlewords says
I am not a huge fan of sweets (gasp!), but nutella crepes from a street vendor in Paris would steal any girl’s heart. I’m trying to come up with something from THIS country, but I’m at a loss!
Actually, I take that back — the oreo cookie chocolate fondue from the Melting Pot is to diiiiie for.
Claire says
I watched that last night too (while on the treadmill, I was literally running towards that pb&j donut).
My favorite sweet treat is no doubt the key lime pie from Joe’s Stone Crab in Chicago. There aren’t words to adequately describe it nothing else in the world like it.
My dad has taken me for a slice every year since I was a freshman in college.
Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries says
What a fantastic idea! I had one of the best desserts ever at this restaurant called Eggepectations in Northern VA. It was a chocolate chip muffin topped with vanilla ice cream whipped cream and chocolate sauce. The best Mexican meal(s) I’ve ever had is at this little joint call La Parota in Farmville, VA. I could eat my weight in free chips and get a soft chicken taco and walk out with a $2 bill. Can’t beat that!
Jess (Daly Authenticity) says
I absolutely love that show! I dream of actually making it to those destinations.
The best desserts that I have ever had is at this cute little family owned shoppe in a town close to me. It’s called Sweet Memories. The most delicious one I just had: A chocolate peanut butter cupcake with peanut butter mousse filling, peanut butter buttercream icing, and chocolate shavings. Holy YUM.
Alexis says
The coconut cake from Round The Clock Diner on Route 30 in York, PA was the best dessert ever. Next time you are in Gettysburg visiting the family you REALLY need to try it. (All of their cakes and pies are massive and will make you want to hug the dessert case upon arrival.)
Amber Mitchell says
Gold Brick from Wall Street Bar and grill. They start with homeade ice cream in a frozen glass with home made chocolate sauce that hardens as it settles topped with pecans….best ice cream dessert hands down!
ashley says
The best dessert I ever had was a Banana Split at Serendipity in Las Vegas, it sounds so simple, but it was just soooo good.
Amber K says
I miss the chocolate lasagna from Olive Garden, it was the best sweet treat ever. I couldn’t eat it again even if they had it (darn gluten intolerance), but I still miss it!
dana@mylittlecelebration says
That’s easy. The best sweet thing I ever ate was at Redrock Canyon Grill (http://redrockcanyongrill.ehsrg.com/).
On their menu they have an item called “something chocolate.” Sounds harmless enough, but oh goodness, it’s SIN! It’s a cinnamon-flavored fudge brownie cut into two layers and filled with a generous portion of house-made vanilla bean ice cream. Then on top there is a huge scoop of banana-infused fresh whipped cream and the whole thing is drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce. Oh goodness. I want one RIGHT, NOW. It’s take-your-breath-away delicious!
Lauri says
I live in Baltimore and at this new local awesome restaurant – Woodberry Kitchen – I had the BEST dessert ever last year for my husband and I’s 6th anniversary. It’s called the C.M.P. and is Malt ice cream, chocolate sauce, marshmallow fluff, wet peanuts. To die for!!!
Shanna, Like Banana says
Well that would be a fun retirement 😉
I’d say you have to hit up Ghiradelli’s in SF and get any version of their sundaes with hot fudge. It will blow your mind. I swear!
OR, if you ever go through Madison, WI, you need to get Blue Moon ice cream. There is nothing else like it on this earth!
Allison @ Happy Tales says
Ya know, I had never heard of the term “concrete” before I met my boyfriend Ryan. It took so long for me to understand!
If you’re a lover of icecream you must (no…NEED) to try Greaters icecream in Cincinnati, OH. I grew up there, and it is one of the big things that everyone in cinci is proud of! Black Raspberry Chip is what they’re known for, but I’m a huge fan of their buckeye somethingerother…basicaly chocolate and peanutbutter. It’s to die for.
Also! Kaminski’s in Charleston, SC has is an amaaazing dessert/coffee place and has THE BEST tollhousecookie pie thing I’ve ever eaten. I think it’s the best dessert I’ve ever had. Easily shareable b/c it’s so big! (but you might not want to share…ha!)
Leah says
Add Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans to your list of places to visit. The beignets are delicious. Can’t beat fried dough covered in sugar. 🙂
Katie @ Healthy Heddleston says
I had hulu pie which was like a glorified ice cream cake with macademia nuts while in kauai
katie says
I love this post and I love your and Ryans Idea! Its funny because Mike and I want to do the same thing, travel the world and go dine everywhere! lol! We plan on buying a RV and just living it up! We always write down places we see on food network! I love that show Best Thing I Ever Ate, and we loved watching Chopped as well, its a fun show!
Hmmmmmmm best sweetest thing I ever ate would be Blue Duck Tavern in DC’s Fresh Baked Apple Pie ! It is the BEST! They make personal fresh apple pie and it is to do for! Its meant for probably 4 or 5 people to share, but Mike and I get it and each eat two huge pieces! Pair it with their homemade honey vanilla icecream, and ahhh pure heaven!
I have to also say they have FRESH sugar cookies you can get too, they come in a tin, and are warm and soooooo amazing!!

Like you, I’m a peanut butter lover, so my number one dessert pick would have to be the Humble Pie from Serendipity. I’ve had it in both the NY and Las Vegas locations, and both were delicious. Main difference is the size of the slice in Vegas- it weighed about 5 lbs. and we had leftovers for the rest of our trip! Believe me, it tasted extremely good when we rolled in at 4 am..
Lyssa says
I don’t know if you have tried Funky Monkey in downtown orlando yet but I would rank it as one of my all time fave places in Central Florida. It looks a little shady from the outside but if you haven’t made it there yet I would highly recommend it!! By the way their bananas foster is ah-ma-zing but that is pretty hard to mess up.
Maria @ Oh Healthy Day says
My favorite sweet treat is the pineapple-coconut ice cream from Lappert’s in Hawaii. Oddly enough, i’ts found at a mall of all places, but if it happened to exist here on the mainland, I’d be 20 pounds heavier and a lot more relaxed.
Laura @ Run Eat Date says
Toffee Bread Pudding at Union Bistro in Castle Rock – outside of Denver, CO…bread, chocolate, toffee…all gooey warm…it was on their Restaurant Week menu last year…and yes, there was vanilla ice cream too!
Kimberly @ Healthy Strides says
A sundae from DeBrand Chocolateir in Fort Wayne, IN: Dark chocolate dish, rich vanilla ice cream, crispy peanut butter topping, milk chocolate topping and whipped cream. The quality of the ingredients make the sundae amazing. Another fave is Graeter’s ice cream in Cincinnati. Oprah is such a fan that she mentioned on her show that she has it shipped to her!
katie says
omg Kimberly I must try this! I just moved to fort wayne, In!! I am going to check this delish out!!
Anna @ Acquainted With The Night says
ONCE I had this really really really yummy strawberry shortcake at Bubba Gumps in Monterey, CA and it was delicious! 😀
And huge though. I couldn’t finish it! soooo ginormous!
Holly says
That sundae looks amazing! I love watching cooking shows. So much inspiration for the week of meals ahead! Plus, it’s always a bonus when it’s something sweet…
Not a dessert, but The Book Nook cafe in Chemainus, BC (on Vancouver Island), has the best chai lattes EVER. Add in some butterscotch syrup and it’s to die for! The candy store here in town also sells delicious sugar roasted nuts – peanuts, macadamia, pecans, almonds, cashews… Heaven!
Ginger spice cake smothered with caramel sauce at Odika Caffe in Chemainus, BC. Their mango raspberry cheesecake & homemade white chocolate blueberry bread pudding is divine too!!
Gen says
The sundae looks awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eliz@The Sweet Life says
Oh wow–the sundae looks so delicious. For me, chocolate cake at Baker’s Crust in Richmond, VA!
Brooke says
rocky road ice cream. that’s it!
Kelsey says
The best ice cream in my area is from Honey Hut. Oh my gosh… it’s amazing and made with honey, not white sugar. Honey pecan, coconut almond, chocolate peanut butter (mmmm!) and my favorite, birthday cake. Cake batter ice cream, chunks of yellow cake, frosting swirls and sprinkles, all within the ice cream! They open in March, and I’m counting down the days!
Nicole says
I live right next to the Nutella Crepes Trailer. The best treat ever!
Tracy @ Commit to Fit says
I love that show! The Funnel Cake is one of my favourites. You can get them lots of places, but I get mine at Canada’s Wonderland in Toronto 🙂
Kassi says
You should definitely visit Dublin, Texas home of the oldest Dr. Pepper Bottling plant in the world. Old Doc’s Soda Shop (the plant’s old fashioned soda shop) has a treat called a Frosty Pepper. It is absolutely amazing. It is basically a Dr. Pepper milk shake. They use the normal milk shake ingredients and then add some of the Dr Pepper syrup (made with real pure cane sugar, not corn syrup) to add the Dr Pepper flavor. It is really sweet, but oh so good.
Leanne (For Health's Sake) says
There’s a restaurant named Avocado near where I live and it has this amazing ice cream/waffle/chocolatey goodness bowl of fun….. I don’t know what the name is, but its AMAZE.
Another restaurant chain “moxies” makes an amazing white chocolate brownie… mmmmm
I like simple desserts, nothing too fancy… just plain ol tasty!
Kelly says
Best dessert ever…hands down my wedding cake. It was AMAZING! Even people who don’t like cake kept telling us how amazing it was. We had a split flavor cake. The bottom layer was chocolate cake with a cappuccino filling and the other 2 tiers were white cake with an almandine filling.
Sarah @ goingongoals says
I have made a quesadilla in the office too! The only difference is i roll it up and then microwave it. So I guess it is more like a cheese in a blanket. Still delicious!
Allison says
Finale in Boston is terrific! It’s basically and fancy dessert restaurant, and I had the most amazing chocolate lava cake while my fiance had a Tahitian vanilla sundae – to die for!
steph says
I loveee the chocolate cake at PF Changs. I once ate the whole thing by myself. Not sad.
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
ryan and i say that this cake is the BEST value you can find for a huge and delicious dessert.
Paula @ Eat:Watch:Run says
I love Sweet! cupcakes (in Waterford Lakes here in Orlando) and this is so not original – but my favorite dessert EVER is the Captain Jack’s Buried Treasure at Ale House.
Chocolate, caramel, ice cream, Heath, Oreo, Yes please!

I love cabbage in a salad! So good.
