When the alarm went off this morning, Ryan turned it off and I laid there for a minute or two like I always do before throwing off the sheets and walking toward the bathroom.
I glanced at the clock and did a double take.
4:47 a.m.
“Ryan! What the heck!?” I said.
Apparently someone had an early meeting at work this morning and decided we needed to get to the gym 15 minutes earlier than usual and set our alarm for 4:45 a.m.
For some reason waking up at 4:45 a.m. seemed so much more intense than a 5 a.m. wake up call. When I asked Ryan why he didn’t give me a warning about the earlier-than-usual wake up time, he said, “I figured this was one of those situations where it would be better to ask for forgiveness than for permission.”
Let’s hope he doesn’t teach our kids that mentality one day.
Workout
Truth be told, I didn’t feel any more tired after waking up only 15 minutes earlier and by the time we were at the gym and I started my workout, it felt like any other workout.
I started with 20 minutes of incline walking before completing three sets of 15 – 20 repetitions of the following exercises:
- Superset One: Tricep dips, Upright rows
- Superset Two: Mac raises, Incline bicep curls
- Superset Three: Chest press, Low rows
- Tricep pull downs
Then I did three minutes non-stop of the following:
- Bicep curls (varying speeds)
- Shoulder exercises (front raises, upright rows, overhead press, side raises)
The best part of my workout today? The music! I didn’t use my iPod at all because the gym was playing awesome throwback songs including:
- Baby Got Back – Sir Mix-a-Lot
- Ghetto Superstar – Pras, Maya & ODB
- Poison – Bell Biv DeVo (Any other fans of The Sing Off love Urban Method’s a cappella version of this song?)
- Be My Lover – LaBouche <—You know how much I love LaBouche!
It took everything I had not to drop it low and start booty dancing when Baby Got Back came on. Not like I actually have moves to bust out… but I do love to dance, and after a few beers, I move like Britney Spears in my mind.
Breakfast
Breakfast today was fruity and fabulous.
I made myself a hot bowl of apple cinnamon and banana oatmeal.
I combined oats, milk, a large sliced apple, banana slices and brown sugar and dug in.
The apples and cinnamon made this meal taste festively fall. Mmm!
Hope your Friday is off to a great start!

Hope says
Haha, I love the picture of your face on Britney’s body! I love the throwback songs that you listened to at the gym today! 🙂
Hot apple cinnamon oats sound and look perfect on this freezing cold morning! We had our first frost today and possibly snow tomorrow. Way too early for this! Happy Friday!
Kat @ balanceandspice says
That breakfast looks amazing. I was told by my neighbor on the treadmill yesterday, “you’re a singer!” I said, “what?” He said, you were singing out loud while you were running!” I had no idea. Apparently listening to Pink gets me in a belting kinda mood. Have a great day!
Heather @ Health, Beauty & Sweet Homelife says
You may have the moves like Britney…but my husband seems to think he has the moves like “Jagger”. Every time that song comes out…watch out world! 😉
Hillary says
True story: I sometimes cannot help myself from breaking out the dance moves at the gym. I am totally that person dancing in between sets in the weight room. No shame.
Lindsey @ Happy or Hungry says
Baha, the other day I had a dream that my alarm went off, so I woke up in a panic that I was late, sprinted to the bathroom, did the whole bathroom thang, came back into our room, checked the time…2:30 am. Whoops.
I’d rather be a funny dancer than a sexy dancer any day!!!
Sylvia @ Frolic Through Life says
Hahaha I love Ryan’s reasoning behind not telling you. I use that on my boyfriend all the time. LOL
Cara @ EAT. PRAY. RUN. says
La Bouche! Holy throwback jam! I may just have to get that on my iTunes asap…those take me back to the rollarskating rink days in middle school!
Have an awesome weekend!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Congrats to your winner! And I LOVE that you referenced Ghetto Superstar. I remember when I was like 10 and I didn’t have that CD but I tried to tape it on the radio whenever it came on .. LOL! Happy Friday!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
i love listening to the gym music as opposed to my iPod… our gym always has some great throwbacks. yesterday it was “i can’t fight this feeling” by REO Speedwagon! ha.
Lindsay @ biking before bed says
I think it’s a mental block. Before 5 am just doesn’t seem like morning! Love the Britney double take. I really thought it was you on Halloween for a good 5 minutes! I’ve tried incorporating your three minute upper body repeat moves into my strength training and I love them! Definitely works your muscles differently.
peanutbutterfingers says
i agree! i think 4 a.m. is a bed time… in college at least. 🙂
Ashley @ Good Taste Healthy Me says
I looooove dancing. It’s so much fun and actually quite a workout!
heather says

This line is great: “I figured this was one of those situations where it would be better to ask for forgiveness than for permission.”
He’s so smart. 🙂
Aine @ Something to Chew Over says
I think seeing the number 4 on the clock is way more difficult than 5! I’m totally with you there 🙂
Cheryl says
HAHAHA love the Julie Spears photo :-p And I used to have to wake up around 4:50 for crew in college… I intentionally set my clock late so it would show I was waking up in the 5s instead of the 4s
Nicole says
Awwww man. I didn’t win. Congrats to the winner.
I did the same thing this morning (no iPod). But I was reading Catching Fire.
My 14 miles may be in danger tomorrow. 80% chance of rain and a morning low of 36. NOT happening. Probably won’t happen on a treadmill either. May have to push to Sunday.

What a great mix! Congrats to the Kitchenaid mixer winner! I finally busted mine out of its box (where it’s been since my bridal shower in March) and it was so awesome! I’ve been using a handmixer so long that I didn’t know what I was missing!
Emmarie @ Bananas and Beer says
I used to get up early and go to a spinning class at 6am, but since I switched gyms, I work out after work now. I dread the thought of getting up that early, but I did love the feeling of starting the day off right!
Cat @Breakfast to Bed says
LOVED Chris. LOVED him. Also 445 is grounds for divorce-or a very expensive bag.
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
Haha great picture. I love some of the older throwback songs! Whenever they come on, I remember how much I miss them!
mindy @ just a one girl revolution. says
I don’t need to dance like Brit, as long as I can have those ABS!
Becky @ Fit Chick on the Fly says
4:45 AM really does feel/sound sooo much earlier then the usual 5:00 AM. Seeing that 4 can really mess with your mind! 🙂 LOL ! Good for you for sticking it out and gettin’ in the gym!
Liz @ Something To Chew On says
Ms. Spears and I dance around my kitchen while I cook 🙂 haha I’m so glad no one else can see me…
lauren says
Wow, 4:45, you are hardcore! Hubs and I set the alarm for 5am today, I was ready by 5:20 – him by 6…baby steps. But, I think he’ll get better.
In my head, I think I’m a awesome dancer. After a glass of wine, I know I’m an awesome dancer! Then, last weekend, my four year old niece was dancing to the Backyardigans and I realized that we have all the same moves…
Annie @ Naturally Sweet Recipes says
That picture cracks me up! I love dancing, maybe not as good as Britney… 🙂 Good for you for getting a move on so early in the morning!
Brooke says
I completely agree! Whenever I hear old music I can’t help but feel like I need to break it down on the treadmill! I’m sure I’m grinning too.. awkward 🙂 hahah

What a great discovery! They have some amazing playlists and all downloads are free! There are some old school tunes that I have been loving lately for my workouts.
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I just wrote a post yesterday about how Ghetto Superstar totally brings me back to the high school days! Summer of 98 baby, I had just gotten my license and we blasted that song on repeat! 🙂
Lena @ Fit on the Rocks says
omg…it’s a good thing I wasn’t drinking coffee when I got to the Julie Spears photo because I would have had quite the mess to clean up. I literally burst out laughing. Way to start my morning!
Rosa - Fitness, Food, Fulfilled says
Love the mix of songs! I’ve always loved Baby Got Back! We had a dueling piano team come out for our sales kick off this year, and they did that song. It was hilarious and everyone was so into it.
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
Haha I always get upset if I forget my headphones but then realize the gym music can get pretty entertaining! My gym also has a few screens playing the music videos, which are very entertaining when you’re on the cardio machines
Steph @ A Hungry Bookworm says
My husband uses the same line about forgiveness and permission all the time!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
And THAT is why I teach ZUmba. So I can dance like that./ Haha 😉 Nice pic.
I sure do love some good throw back songs–wish the gyms I worked out played some more often!!
Ryan’s quote/words –classic!
Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola says
Haha omg I would have been the same way if someone woke me up in the 4 o’clock hour! It just feels way different than the 5 o’clock hour! LOVE that picture of you on Britt’s body- I feel that way too, in my head, I can totally dance and sing like her.
Wendy says
4:45! wow! I have trouble getting up at 8am I can’t even imagine 4:45 haha
Kathy says
Hey I’m curious, when you make oatmeal, do you normally add some type of sugar to it? I see today you said you used brown sugar. I am trying to cut back on adding sugar to food, but some things like oatmeal need something to tweak the flavor. I like to use maple syrup.
Mila @ loftyappetite says
Speaking of Britney dance moves… I know what you’re referring to (i.e. with snake) but what happend to her dance moves? Have you noticed that she never dances anymore? she just kind of bops with an occassional grind… as a die hard Britney fan back in the day, it makes me sad.
Katie says
It is pretty crazy, but after 3 drinks I not only become the best dancer in the room but also the best looking. So weird.
Alaina says
I love throwback songs! Those are usually what get me through my workout, rather than new music.
When I have too much alcohol I think that I’m fluent in Spanish. Haha. 😛
Liz @ IHeartVegetables says
Hahaha that was definitely a forgiveness not permission situation 😉
Gabby Bladdick says
Quick question: you work out before you eat breakfast? Do you ever get really hungry during a workout?
Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups says
Yikes! I know it’s only a 15 minute difference, but 4:45 sounds so much earlier than 5:00!
Emily says
haha! What a good husband for not telling you about the early wake-up call- I would’ve preferred that as well. Once I’m up and moving, I always feel great. It’s the thought of waking up before the sun that gets to me.
Awesome workout and breakfast!
