Yesterday evening, Ryan drove from Ocala to St. Pete to pick me up to head on to my mother in law’s house (<—so fun to call her that!) in Sarasota for the weekend.
Our weekend in Sarasota kicked off on the best note possible with a trip to SweetBerries for frozen custard before bed.
Frozen custard is like frozen yogurt, but thicker and full of fat and deliciousness. It’s my favorite kind of frozen treat, above ice cream and fro yo. Yes, it really is that good!
I ordered the Sarasota Sunrise, which was vanilla custard with raspberries, strawberries and blackberries incorporated into the creamy dessert.
Fantastic! SweetBerries really needs to franchise their stores and set up shop across the nation because more people need to get in on this hot fire!
Breakfast
Breakfast this morning was very, very good!
Ryan’s mom and her boyfriend Les prepared us quite the morning meal of dippy eggs, bacon, buttered toast and fruit.
Not a shabby way to start a Saturday… until you stub your toe and it hurts too bad to walk normal…
Ouch.
My bum toe actually prevented me from participating in this afternoon’s fun activity.
Bowling!
Honestly, me sitting out of a couple of rounds of bowling isn’t a bad thing. I’m absolutely awful at bowling and prefer the social aspect of the game anyway.
Ryan, his mom and her boyfriend bowled two games and we all had a fun time chatting away and cheering each other on.
Ryan’s mom and Les’ games both improved a lot in the second round. Everyone was over 100 which is more than I can ever say for my own bowling game.
True story: I once won $5 for bowling the lowest scoring game in the entire alley. Hey, money is money, so I wasn’t complaining.
I gotta get back to hangin’ with the fam! We’re having an early dinner with Ryan’s grandma and her boyfriend and tons of shellfish is on the menu. I’m salivating already!
Lauren @ Sugar Coated Sisters says
Bowling is a tough game!
That custard looks amazing! We don’t have many custard shops out here in California, so I love stopping for some when we make trips to the Midwest during the summer!
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
Oh man I’ve never heard of frozen custard but you’ve gotten me super intrigued….maybe CA doesn’t have that kind of stuff! haha.
Sweet and Savvy says
Bowling can be brutal.. hope your toe feels better!:)
Courtney says
Ahh! I’m sorry about your toe 🙁
That frozen custard looks delish, tho 🙂
Liz Marchese says
Too bad I wasn’t in Sarasota this weekend because I live pretty close to sweet berries? Did Ryan go to school in Sarasota? I graduated Riverview in 2008 which is right down the road from sweetberries! I hope you feel better!
peanutbutterfingers says
Oh how neat! Do you know Daniel Castorani by any chance? He graduated from Riverview a few years before you did and he’s Ryan’s cousin! Ryan went to St. Stephen’s. 🙂
Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups says
I’m a pretty terrible bowler too and I can’t roll the ball very fast so I just look silly.
Holly @ Pink Runner says
Aw I HATE hitting a toe on something. I hope it feels better soon 🙁 Just a better excuse to wear flip flops 🙂
Cait's Plate says
Oh no! Sorry to hear about the toe – that’s no fun 🙁 I LOVE bowling, what a bummer you couldn’t play.
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
katie says
Hope your toe feels better girl! Love the nail polish on your toes!
We went bowling last night, Im awful!!! lol!
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles says
Frozen custard is ahhhmazing, haven’t had it in a couple of years though. Gosh I want some right now!!!! Take care of that toe, I hate when something small can hurt soooo bad!
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
I am an awful bowler too! to bad about your toe…I needs to try frozen custard 🙂
Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance says
Aw I’m sorry about your toe 🙁
Girl in the pink says
You’re not alone, I’ve bowled a 38 before… I was trying.
Brittany says
HA! I just busted out laughing at Girl in the pink. I am also a terrible bowler! I avoid it all costs, which explains why I can’t remember the last time I went bowling.
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Oh NO! What did you do to your toe?! That is the worst, we don’t know what a good thing we have in our toes until we hurt one. So many nerves down there!!
I like to bowl but I think I might be WORSE than you…. just sayin’!
peanutbutterfingers says
I stubbed it on a wrought iron chair. Soooo painful!!
Megan says
Love the shoutout to custard. I’m from Milwaukee, land of custard, and always love it! Having some from Kopps tonight!
Hillary says
I’ve also grown to love frozen custard. My boyfriend lives in NC, and they have Goodberry’s, which I’m convinced is the best frozen custard in the world. I beg him for it every time I go to visit! (We had it twice in a matter of three days this past time. Not too shabby).
Liz says
Aww I’m sorry about your toe! 🙁
Anna @ Food Fitness and Frolicking says
You are SO right..CUSTARD IS AWESOME.
Sarah says
I live in the midwest and all we have is frozen custard, but there is not a single fro yo place in sight! I love frozen custard because lets face it it’s delicious but sometimes when I have a craving for something sweet I wish I could have the healthier option of fro yo!
Mallory @ It's Only Life, After All says
Stubbing/injuring a toe is the most painful thing EVER. It’s happened to me before & I seriously was seein’ stars. Lots of ice!
Custard is amazing. The end.
Bee Goes Bananas says
That looks like the perfect treat for a hot summer day!
Tessa @ Amazing Asset says
Oh my, stubbing your toe hurts so darn much! I can’t help but cry when it happens, and I am usually okay with dealing with pain
I am such a terrible bowler, like I am fairly sure I am the worst person evaa
Perfect looking treat Julie
Emily says
I just have to say that I just finished Divergent based on your recommendation. I read it cover to cover in less than 24 hours and it pains me that the next one isn’t out yet! I can’t wait to read the rest of the story! I love your blog and you’ve gotten me hooked on chia seeds. 🙂
Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life says
Awwww, bowling! I miss bowling…I need to go bowl a few games with hubs.
Sorry about your toe! Hope it feels better soon…and if not, just get more custard. 😉
stevie says
Haha! What is up with the make shift bandage you made? It looks like you wrapped toilet paper on your foot, and cute sandals to show it off! Lol. Hope you feel better soon!
Bee @ B*tchy Bee says
Haha, I think I’ve broken 100 in bowling…once in my life?
Wii Bowling is so deceiving. I play on there and can bowl a perfect game. So I walk into a bowling alley thinking “hey I must be good at bowling!”
That is NOT the case. Damn you wii bowling!!! hehe 😉
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
It sounds like we would be great bowling partners. I might even give you a run for that $5….
Allison @ Happy Tales says
ughhh I am *such* a baby when it comes to stubbing my toe. So painful! Is it going to hamper your half-marathon training? I just started marathon training for Savannah last week. It’s gonna come up so quick!
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
I love frozen custard!! A place just opened by me and I have definitely been there a few times.
Julie says
I always say one of the best parts about living in Wisconsin/the Midwest is the frozen custard!!! If you’re ever in the Milwaukee area, you have to try Kopps frozen custard! And, don’t feel bad about being a sucky bowler…I have actually bowled a gutter ball when bowling on a “bumper” lane…yikes.
Joyce @ Jranola Joyce says
Frozen custard! sounds amazing!! 🙂
Jackie @ That Deep Breath says
Frozen custard sounds amazing! I need to try this
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Bowling isn’t my strongest “sport” either. My goal in any game is to bowl my weight. If I can hit that I’m a happy camper. Unfortunately, it’s usually more like my weight in 5th grade than my current weight..
cathy says
i’m glad i found your blog! i vacationed in florida last summer for two weeks, and spent three days in sarasota. LOVED the city. how did i miss the custard?!
take care of your toe!
Claire @ Un Bello Aperitivo says
I remember frequenting the chain restaurant Culver’s (I think it’s a Midwest thing) for their frozen custard. They’d always have chocolate and vanilla, but then they would have a flavor of the day, where they came up with imaginative flavors like Boston Cream Pie or Cashew Caramel. The custard came out in loooong, slow ribbons from the ice cream machine…drool. They also used to list out all their flavors of the day for the month on a flyer, and I would bring it home and mark all the days on which they had a good flavor hoping that my parents would consent to getting custard that day! 😉
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
Yay for Sweet Berries!!! I didn’t know that you already knew about the place … if I had known, I wouldn’t have gone on and on about it in one of my previous comments haha! 😉 But it really is the best place ever! 🙂
Amanda says
Ouch–hope your toe heals soon! All of that food looks delicious. I haven’t heard of frozen custard before, but it looks so good 🙂
Rebekah says
I once won a prize for the lowest score in bowling as well! It seems like the harder I try the worse I do :P. Hope your toe gets better soon!
Jen @newellnd says
Sorry to hear about the toe; injuries like that are worst…speaking from experiencing after breaking my foot earlier this summer and denying it for days.
Your in-laws make a really delicious looking breakfast!
Joanna@DrizzleofSunshine says
Eeps! I hope your toe feels better soon. Stubbing your toe is the pits for sure!
I think the only cure is to have more custard.
Khushboo says
Frozen custard…better than ice cream AND fro yo…how can i get some in my life ASAP!
Grace says
I am a horrible bowler, too! I usually use bumpers if my bowling mates will allow it because I am that bad and I don’t need to spent a night or afternoon getting pissed off at myself because of something silly like bowling! I with you on the custard! Have you ever had Rita’s? I love it!
Jen says
My mom lives right near SweetBerries so I always make a stop there when I am visiting. If I’m not into the flavor of the day then I get the sunset concrete, too 🙂 So good!
Alisa @ Running with Knives says
Custard is pretty amazing. You’re from the Midwest, remember Culver’s? They are based out of Wisconsin and have custard that will change your life forever.
yolie @ practising wellness says
im so sorry about your toe 🙁 sending lots of get better soon thoughts! xyx
Sophie says
Oh wow I’d never heard of frozen custard before, that looks delicious. I hope your toe feels better soon!
Ali @ Ali Runs says
I am AWFUL at bowling so I wouldn’t feel that bad about sitting out. It would definitely be better to watch. 😉 Hope your toe feels better soon!
Jordan P @ food, sweat, and beers says
UGh bowling is my kryptonite. I think it stems from my brothers always getting so competitive with it when we were little. Always resulted in me very frustrated and wishing I could just stick to the bumper bowling!
Claire says
This was the weekend of bum toes….One of my friends stubbed BOTH big toes one bled and the other cracked the nail…gross!
