Is it just me or have you noticed that the song Call Me Maybe absolutely exploded seemingly overnight a few weeks ago?
Now I hear it daily, but I’m not complaining. It reminds me of ‘90s pop music like Robyn’s Show Me Love, so obviously I am a fan. (If you’re also a ‘90s music lover, my ‘90s Workout Playlist may be right up your alley.)
Last week I saw a fantastic YouTube video of the Harvard baseball team “performing” the song on a road trip while one of their teammates was asleep in the back seat of a van.
Hilarious! (Best part = Minute 2:25)
My girlfriends and I used to make music videos all the time when we were in high school younger and this song would’ve been right up our alley. I’m awfully tempted to down some margaritas at a BBQ we’re attending on Saturday and resurrect the homemade music video star that has been held captive within me for far too long.
Anyway, Call Me Maybe came on at the gym this morning and Ryan and I immediately made eye contact from across the gym and started doing the moves that the guys from the above video do during the chorus of the song.
I then looked to my left and saw two other young guys doing the exact same thing! Apparently Call Me Maybe fever is in full swing. Dance, dance!
Aside from dancing, my workout included a 20 minute warm up on the elliptical before I completed Annette’s Outside Your Comfort Zone workout. This workout is quickly becoming a favorite!
Breakfast
Breakfast this morning was a lovely little breakfast sandwich that included two fried eggs, muenster cheese and jelly.
Plus coffee!
Question of the Morning
- Did you ever make homemade music videos?
Not only did my girlfriends and I make music videos, but my best friend Michaela and I also made nature videos (a la The Crocodile Hunter, complete with Australian accents) and cooking videos.
Sara @ The Foodie Diaries says
My best friend sent me that video last week! Because I live in Boston, we both want to go to one of their games and hold up a sign that says “Call Me, Maybe?” with our phone numbers 😉 I’ll have to let you know if we have the balls to actually do it!
My sister and neighbors used to always get together and do performances/plays/videos to different songs. Our favorite was N*Sync’s Christmas CD and then we would perform for all of our parents at the neighborhood holiday Christmas party. Oh the good ol’ days.
Have a margarita (or two) for me this weekend and bust out those diva dance moves! 🙂
Courtney says
Ah I love it! Those Harvard boys are adorable!! I’m not ashamed to admit I’m going to the Kiss 108 Kiss Concert this weekend with my cousin, her 9 year old daughter and her daughter’s friend. I’m psyched that Carly Rae Jepsen is performing!! We’re all wearing matching neon knee socks and Glambert tee shirts (to profess our love for Adam Lambert who is also performing!) My inner 9 year old will never die!
Lauren @ Part Time House Wife says
Hahahahhahah my girl friends and I totally made a full out music video to shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me”. We dressed one girl up like a guy and even drew facial hair on her face and acted out the whole song in my parents basement. BEST MEMORIES EVER!
Danielle says
Ummm yes to the music videos! My best friend and I used to also do interpretive dances to the Lion King soundtrack…I can’t hear “Circle of Life” without seeing our bizarre routine in my head, and I crack up laughing 🙂
Danielle says
My older cousins also dressed me up, put me in sunglasses, and made me sing Mariah Carey songs for the entire family. I love the 90’s.
lindsay says
I love these videos! I was a college athlete and it brings me back to many long van rides!
Annie@ What's Annie Making? says
I was always making up dances and music videos with my friends growing up. Call Me Maybe would have for sure been something we did, right up there with songs by Aqua and New Kids on the Block. I’m currently trying to convince Josh to add this song to our wedding playlist.
Tiffany says
Haha thanks so much for sharing. Totally bhind on the call me maybe bandwagon!
My friend and I used to dance and sing to all 4 one I swear, the beach boys. My fav sing along was my two cousins and I would sing to Hanson songs and we would each be one of the boys and only sin their lines. I got to always be Taylor…. Ahhh faint 🙂
Kaelin says
Oh that video is hilarious!!!! I saw the girl’s response to it on Ellen yesterday. Check it out on Youtube!!
My friends and I made up music vids all the time and we were the bomb! Ha! My personal favorites were Tim McGraw’s “Dont Take the Girl” and TLC’s “waterfalls”. We were rock stars!! 🙂
Annette@FitnessPerks says
HAHA. Love that video–that song is so freakin’ catchy, I can see why they busted this out 😉
My sister and I would do ‘talk shows’ and ‘news casts’ all the time. And yes, I would always pretend to sing into mics when songs like these came on….oh WAIT, I still do. HAH.
Thanks for the linkback–glad you love the workout! It’s a toughie but feels oh so good!
Charlotte @ Weekends So Sweet says
Just looked at the outside the comfort zone workout… 50 burpees??? Dang! That is a LOT all at once. I am impressed!

Karen says
I WORKED ON CANADIAN IDOL where CARLY RAE took 3rd place in the competition and I am SO PROUD OF HER! She was super sweet and always cared about her performance and her song choice. We’re all proud of how big she has gotten
Katie says
That is so funny! I used to make music videos to Britney Spears when I was 8. I grew out of that later in life and started making Barbie videos-Barbie of the Opera, Romeo and Juliet: Barbie Edition and many music videos using them. So much fun!
Laurie @ Love, Laugh, Laurie says
You and Ryan are awesome, I love that you both did that 🙂
Stephanie @ My Freckled Life says
I LOVE this video! So hilarious! And my fiance and I totally did the same thing the other day when the song came on in a store we were in. We immediately looked across the store for each other and started doing the moves! haha.
I dont know that I ever actually made “videos”, but my next door neighbor and I definitely used to choreograph many a dance to Spice Girls, BSB, and N*sync in our driveways. Sadly, I’m pretty sure I remember some of them!
Alysha @Shesontherun says
I remember making tons of Spice Girls videos back in the day! I was Posh Spice, and I remember my friend’s dad videotaping us. I’d love to get a hold of those tapes!
Doris @ Vanillacocoberry says

Dana says
Sooo … when are you going to post these videos you made???
peanutbutterfingers says
i wouldn’t hold your breath… 😉
Alisha says
I can’t imagine to see if we ever recorded anything but my best friend when I was in middle school and I created a dance routine to “Queen of the Night” by Whitney Houston. I’m laughing thinking about it now!
Katie says
Oh my gosh I hear this song every single day on my way to work! This is so funny!
Emily says
I love the song, I mean it’s doesn’t have much substance to it, but it’s SO catchy. Annnd anyone who’s ever waited on a call from a cute boy can totally relate 😉
Natasha@yogininoms.wordpress.com says
ahaha, yes! my friends and I always made dance videos or videos in the car 🙂
Laura @ My Pink Thumb says
So funny that this song is only starting to get big down in the US now. Although I’m a little sick of it now as it’s been blasted on top 40 stations here in Canada for months now, I’m happy to hear of another Canadian artist making a name for herself down south! 🙂 I remember watching Carley Rae on Canadian Idol several years ago and it’s nice to see that she’s ‘made it’ as she was a sweetheart!
Lisa @ I'm an Okie says
Too funny. My girlfriends and I once made up a dance to one of the Backstreet Boy’s songs. We practiced for days and finally videod it and then mailed it to them. We were CONVINCED that they saw it then they’d want us to become their backup dancers and we’d go on tour with them and fall in love.
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
All I have to say is videos were totally made for NSync and Christina Aguilera!
Liz @ IHeartVegetables says
Hahaha I LOVE that song!!! That’s so funny! I love how the guy winks when he comes up 😉

my best friend in 4th grade and I would perform anything and everything by Celine Dion/Mariah Carey/The Bodyguard soundtrack. We were pretty awesome at it, although Im sure my mom was anxious for that stage to be over.
Sara says
Here’s another Call Me Maybe video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97fE7ZR_Ww8
This kid made a parody of the lyrics based on Tom Brady. I saw this on the sports blog Deadspin this morning right after I read your post. I guess you are right about the fever!
Leanne @ The Skinny Architect says
Haha, I love the guy who winks, definitely my favorite.
My friends and I dressed up in 80’s clothing my senior year of high school and did a music video to Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. It was a good time and I still can’t figure out how we were able to come up with such awesome 80’s outfits. When we graduated one of my friends (who filmed a good part of high school) made us all DVD’s of everything, complete with the music video!
Madison @ Pilates Makes You Happy says
Next man I meet I swear I’m going to go up to him and say “Hey I just met you, and this is crazy- but here’s my number…call me maybe”
I’ll let you know how it goes.
peanutbutterfingers says
DO IT! i’d give you MY number.
Ashley says
Oh my gosh, Show Me Love used to be my FAVORITE!!! My friends and I had far too many made up dances to Spice Girls, All Saints, and Dream songs…yet I still can remember all the words to them. 🙂

UMMM I was just totally weirded out because I was humming Call Me Maybe in my head as I came across your post in my reader and I was like “wait. what!?!?!” LOL
Sara says
Haha I read your blog but never commented and felt I had to on this one haha. That video is HILARIOUS. And me and my best girlfriends almost always made videos whenever we would get together! We had several cooking shows, commercials, rap videos and me and my sister made a special one to “sexy and I know it” sporting our fabulous matching onesies we got each other for Christmas : ) so much fun! And they always make me smile when I watch them years later.
peanutbutterfingers says
thanks so much for commenting, sara!
Anne says
I have now been singing this song all morning! Thanks, Julie!
Whitney @ Whit Likes Fit says
Totally embarrassing to admit but in high school we made tons of music videos. We have quite a few to Shania Twain songs and every time they come on the radio I shudder. If those videos ever leaked out to my friends I would die.
Janice says
Have you heard about the new craze “Jepsen-ing”?? It’s when you text a random phone number “Hey I just met you…and this is crazy…but here’s my #…so call me maybe?” hahaha so random! Not sure if anyone does it, I just heard about it on the radio and cracked up!
Maura @ My Healthy 'Ohana says

I had never heard of this song two weeks ago, but then I took a spin class at the undergraduate gym and EVERYONE was singing along. It made me feel really old.
