It happens to the best of us!
Sometimes a big ol’ bowl of cereal makes the perfect dinner.I knew my dinner had to come together in a flash tonight because I had plans to meet up with my friend Merri at Starbucks this evening.
When I arrived home and found a package from Pssst with a sample box of gluten-free Honey Nut Chex on our doorstep, I knew cereal for dinner was unavoidable. It was calling to me. (Quick note about Pssst in case you’re interested… Anyone can sign up for free to provide feedback to General Mills about their products and taste samples!)
As I sorted through the mail and unpacked my lunch bag, I ate several handfuls of this cereal straight from the box. I am a cereal-lover but rarely buy it since I have serious issues with portion control around it. (I’ve eaten an entire box of cereal in one day two times in college. Froot Loops are seriously addicting.) Well, this box of tastiness hit the spot for this cereal-lovin’ girl.
Sadie was seriously intrigued…
She even licked her chops at the smell of the cereal!
After eating multiple servings straight from the box, I eventually poured some into a bowl to enjoy with milk (no milk in the picture because I didn’t want it to get soggy while I snapped photos).
Alongside the Chex, I also had a bowl of pistachios and a Kashi TLC honey toasted bar that I ate in the car on my way to Starbucks.
At Starbucks I drank a hot cup of Tazo Calm tea because apparently I’m a grandma and thought the calm tea sounded like a perfectly relaxing drink after a long day at work.
Merri arrived about 10 minutes after me and we spent a good two plus hours talking away. Merri is one of those friends who make hours pass like minutes because we have so much to talk about and genuinely enjoy just hanging out together. She’s a gem!
Now that Merri’s gone, I’m wrapping up this blog post at Starbucks before heading home to Ryan and Sadie! Can’t wait to see my favorite duo!
‘Til tomorrow…

When my husband travels, it’s so tempting to eat cereal for dinner! I do on occasion. Especially when I’m not feeling well.
Brittany says
I’m the same way with portion control when it comes to cereal. It’s addicting!! The funniest part is that I’m eating a bowl for a snack tonight as I am reading this. 🙂

I, too, am OBSESSED with cereal. I used to eat it ALL THE TIME in college…to the point where people knew me for it. Oops!
Nights with good friends are the best! Have fun! 🙂
Mel says
Sounds like a perfect dinner to me!
I’m the same way about cereal – I find it hopelessly addicting and can eat it by the handful after handful! Luckily, my sister just turned our box of cereal into puppy chow 🙂
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
A starbucks coffee sounds so good right now! I actually lives blocks from a Starbucks, but never go. It’s a real shame actually…
Jenny says
I have been in love with cold cereal as of late — despite the frigid temps around these parts. I bet that cereal would make a mean chex mix!
Meg says
Ohhh Chex has GF cereal?!?! Count me IN!
Enjoy your night 🙂

LOVE cereal for dinner!!!!!
Allison@ Happy Tales says
I love love LOVE cereal! I never eat it with milk though… In fact, i never truly eat it as an actual meal. It’s always like a desserty-after dinner snack for me.

Cereal for dinner… I love it! I have not had Chex in ages and that was one of my all-time favorite cereals. Thanks for the reminder 😉

Oh my goodness. I’m in college right now, and I live on cereal! Every morning, its Honey Nut Cheerios and a banana. I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of it!

I’m a cereal by the handful kind of girl, too! Also guilty of eating it for dinner-probably once a week. Perfectly appropriate. =]
ashley says
You should try microwaving it!
Chantelle says
Hey girl! Just want to say I really enjoy you’re positive outlook on life and your writing style. Your blog is a joy to read 🙂
Also, I noticed that pink Boxtop4Education “stamp” at the top corner of your Honey Nut Chex box. Did you know those can be donated to a participating school who can redeem each Boxtop for 10 cents each toward educational tools? I was a first grade teacher and still collect them for the school I taught at…feels good to contribute to the cause!
Have a great night! Thanks again for sharing your life with us.
Shannon says
I do the same thing with oatmeal!
Ps, I found your blog this morning while searching for healthy recipes and I LOVE it! As a fitness nut/healthy cooking addict, I am seriously obsessed with your posts. I live in Orlando as well!
Claire says
Calm is my fave tea at Starbucks! The zen tea is also good but calm is def the best
Laura@ Backstage Pass says
Isn’t cereal the best? I like the healthy varieties, bur my favorites are the super sugary ones like Lucky Charms and Golden Grahams. Target’s generic label, Market Pantry makes pretty good knockoff versions of both. I grab a box whenever I notice they’re on sale! I have portion control issues with these as well, so I consider them to be treats and buy sparingly. Thanks for the tip on Psst! I’ll have to go and sign up.
Sarah K. @ The Pajama Chef says
oooh i love cereal! had it for lunch actually. 🙂 and i’m in pssst too…. it was so fun to get the box of cereal in the mail. i’m really into couponing and free samples. my mailman must think i’m nuts! 🙂

I think the problem was in the last question of what do family members do that was the killer because a friend answered with the same questions for everything but that and was accepted 🙁
Ashley says
Oops. Meant to reply to Tara Marie, below.

Gill (snaxandthecity) says
Ugh – I have the same problem with cereal! Especially anything muesli related. Sometimes I actually take a handful, and a swig of milk, and make a cereal bowl in my mouth! (I can’t believe I just admitted that….)
Lauren says
I think if I weren’t married, I would be eating cereal or oatmeal for dinner quite often. This use to be my go-to dinner in college.
Katrina says
Sadie is her mamas girl, eh? 🙂
Cynthia says
Cereal for dinner is so yummy! I have almost no control around cereal either. Thanks for the tip about Pssst. 🙂
Gen says
cereal is great for dinner!!!!!!!
Glad you had a good time with your friend!
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
i, too, have portion control problems with cereal. i think we’ve even been over this with each other before. 🙂
my favorite thing to do is fill up a baggie with it for a work snack… buuut I tend to fill it up with the intention of having it for a few days.
…we all know how THAT works out.
honey nut chex is one of my favorites without milk, though! I think the milk rids it of a lot of the best flavors.
p.s. are you like I am when it comes to soggy cereal? I have to have my cereal cold and crunchy. every time I pour my milk, it’s like I’m in a mad dash to eat the stuff before it gets soggy and gross!
Amber K says
I hate soggy cereal! That’s why my almond milk is always on the side and I add just a little at a time.
Hope says
I love eating cereal for dinner or any breakfast type of food for dinner. I try to control myself around cereal as much as possible, but I agree, it’s hard! 🙂
Kathie @ Frugal Fit and Fabulous says
We had cereal for dinner last night too..mainly because I have been feeling sick and just didnt want to cook.
Geraldine says
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who can’t control themselves when it comes to cereal. And it’s not just the sweet cereals that trigger my ravenous appetite – “boring” cereals like Bran Flakes, Grape Nuts or Special K become so additive once I have that first bowlful.
I also have a friend like Merri – whenever we see each other it’s like a race to tell each other everything because we’re so exited to be hanging out. Time always goes to fast with friends like that.
Jessica (Dalyauthenticity) says
That looks like awesome cereal! For some reason, I tend to be picky with cereals, but I signed up for the Psst program and I am quite excited! I am most excited for their “host a party” option. I love hosting parties!
Happy When Not Hungry says
I love having a bowl of cereal for dinner, and I definitely have portion control problems too! I don’t know what it is about cereal, but instead of just finishing the milk at the bottom of the bowl, I will add more cereal. Sometimes when you’re too tired to cook something or on the run, a bowl of cereal is the perfect solution. Thanks for sharing!
Caitlin says
thanks so much for the blog! Its really helpful to see what you eating and grab some ideas! I have always been semi healthy, but since graduating from college i have been ready to take better care of myself! I have gotten more into running (completed first half marathon in november!!) and its about time to try new foods! I have always been a “picky” eater, but I am bond and determined to change that! Thanks again!
Caroline says
Have you tried the TLC pumpkin spice flax granola bars?? They are my FAVORITE. Seriously can’t stop eating them, especially with a healthy slather of Justin’s maple almond butter on top. Thought you’d like to know!
Alison says
I <3 Kashi TLC Bars. My favorite is the Trail Mix kind…yummy and healthy!
Amber K says
I LOVE that they are making gluten-free Chex now, although it almost always gets turned into this:
