As someone who is a serious planner and likes a set schedule, working at the gym is forcing me to be more flexible and adaptable. On days when I don’t have a set shift, I am still there a lot training clients or teaching a class. I think this is actually a good thing for me in the long run, but it will take some getting used to. I missed you guys this morning!
I had a training session with my first client of the day scheduled for 7 a.m., so I got to the gym a little after 5 a.m. so I could exercise for an hour and have time to shower, eat breakfast (overnight oats again) and work on on a training plan before our appointment.
From the time I clocked in, I didn’t stop moving. I trained one client (she just signed up for more sessions today – woo!) and took two people through a functional workout before I got a call from another instructor asking me to sub for her water fitness class.
Check out those menacing clouds!
I soon found myself rewearing the sweaty clothes I worked out in earlier that morning to teach the class which was awfully pleasant. I will definitely try to remember to pack an extra workout outfit from here on out just in case something comes up. Ick!
It actually rained halfway through the class as I was teaching (no lightning though, so it wasn’t canceled) and I joked that someone was trying to tell me it was time to take another shower. Yikes!
Lunch
My shift at the gym wasn’t too long today and I got off work a little after noon and high-tailed it home to make a smoothie for lunch. I knew I wanted a cold lunch since I was overheated from teaching outside and a smoothie sounded perfect.
Too bad it looked like death in a cup!
I blame the frozen blueberries.
In this smoothie:
- Vanilla almond milk
- Frozen blueberries
- Frozen raspberries
- Cashew butter
- Chocolate protein powder
- Cocoa powder
- Fresh spinach
It was fantastic and totally hit the spot.
Now I’m off to take my second shower of the day and head out to a craft store to pick up some supplies for a project I am working on. More on that in a few days!

The smoothie that look horrible are nearly always the tastiest!
Charlotte @ Commitness to Fitness says
I love ugly smoothies! they’re usually the tastiest because they probably involve berries or chocolate 🙂
Lisa says
I’m with you on that type A personality. I just got a job as a pilates instructor and I know the hours can be all over the place at the start…especially since I start subbing. It’s going to be unknown which is hard for my planning tendencies. Oh well, a new learning curve, right!
Haha the sad thing about spinach in smoothies is the awful look they get after;)
I’m obsessed with avocado, banana, and wheatgrass in my smoothies (as an alternative to spinach) I actually like the taste. Oh and try coconut flour in smoothie, I swear it’s so delicious!
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
congrats on the job, lisa!! 🙂
Tiff @ Love, Sweat, and Beers says
Busy busy busy! I need a set schedule. I think a lack of routine would either be good for me or would drive me completely bonkers.
My smoothies are never pretty, but they’re deeeelish! Happy Friday!
Ashley says
I’ve been on a serious smoothie kick lately, that looks soo good!
Natalie @ Will Jog For Food says
I’ve never combined blueberry and chocolate, looks yummy 🙂
Sara says
As crazy as it sounds, I’m jealous of those menacing clouds! We rarely get thunderstorms up here in Boston and I miss them!! The other night we had our first one in months (maybe even a year!) and I turned my TV off just to listen to the rumbling thunder. After being a Florida girl all my life, I miss the thunderstorms!
Christine@ Apple of My Eye says
I’m definitely a structure loving girl as well. I do like to keep busy though! Organized chaos as I like to call it ;).
Great job with getting your workout in (like you always do!) early in the morning. Seems likes you are adapting well to running around 🙂
Gina C says
I wish all instructors would smile like you do after a busy (and HOT) day! Your smile always makes me smile! Thanks!
Caitlyn @ City and the Cubicle says
I’m there with you– I need a routine! Never thought of combining chocolate/blueberry, I’m still iffy on blueberries so maybe that’s one way to get me to eat them 🙂 hehe
Jamie @ Sometimes Healthy Living Blog says
I can imagine the schedule change would take some getting used to! That smoothie looks perfect for a ridiculously hot day here in NY.
Becky says
Your job sounds so awesome! And I have learned that a lot of the best smoothies aren’t pretty. The taste is all that matters. 🙂
Beth Sheridan says
I don’t have a gym close to me that offers group classes in a time where I could take them and every time you talk about one of your classes, I get so very jealous! I’m sure you’re a fabulous instructor 🙂
Sarah @ Sweet Miles says
That’s hilarious..death in a cup. Sometimes smoothies do look a bit like doo doo but they always taste so good!! hahaha. That one sounds delicious. I’ve never thought about adding cashew butter or cocoa powder! Interestiiinngggg, I’ll have to throw that one out there to the hubs! I’m having jealouy feelings of all the time you’re spending at the pool! I lifeguarded 3 years in college and that “job” is sounding pretty good right about now! Ha!
Sam says
If it’s possible, you sound even more happy and bubbly than ever since landing this job! It sounds like a perfect path for you and your clients are certainly lucky.
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
Thank you, Sam. I feel like it is something I should’ve done a long time ago! I really am enjoying it. 🙂
Melissa @ Freeing Imperfections says
Love the headband! I definitely like a set schedule too. When things can change so much, I get really confused and forget things like said extra pair of workout clothes. It just leaves so much room for error…
So going to try this smoothie! I am pretty much a smoothie every morning kind of gal 🙂
Zoe says
Are you noticing your appetite picking up now that you’re moving around more during the day? I just started a desk job which has done two things- forced me to stick to my workout plan or it never gets done and have a bit of a smaller appetite because the most i’m walking is to and from the subway (2 blocks) not the mile to and from campus I do maybe 2 or 3 times a day during school
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
Oh my gosh, yes! I’ve found that I definitely need bigger snacks now!
Jessica R @ fromthekitchentotheroad says
I have been adding blueberries to my smoothies this week and have noticed an odd color as well. Not pretty but sure tasty!
Iris Lin says
That sounds SO good. Almond milk makes the best smoothies. 🙂
Jen @ Lilly Pea Designs says
hmm.. I have a whole pint of blueberries at home that need to be consumed. Possibly I’ll try this over the weekend. Chocolate and blueberry a good combo?
Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl says
Ugly smoothies can be so tasty! 😉
Ashley @ Life and Fitness says
Mmmm fresh berries in the summer are the best. I love having more smoothies once the weather gets hot.

Where did you get that headband?!! Soo cute!

That smoothie sounds so refreshing for a hot day! I could have totally used one this afternoon! Have a great weekend. 🙂
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Look at you! Go-go-go! At least it’s all fun stuff though, right? When I worked at a gym, the spontaneity of my schedule was one of the most difficult things for me to get used to. It sounds like you’re adapting well though!
Gina says
Do you just eyeball the ingredients in your smoothies and taste as you blend? Thanks!
Corinna says
What brand of cashew butter do you like to get? I’ve been wanting to try it, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet and it’s a bit pricey!
Lisa Cullen says
Your smoothie looks delicious!
Lauren says
Can you taste the cashew butter in the smoothie? I always want to use it but I feel like the flavor is so mild, it gets drowned out by everything unless I eat it plain or on a banana.
Ang @ Nutty for Life says
I have been loving blueberries in smoothies lately. I know you like coconut, so I recommend trying a green smoothie made with coconut water, blueberries, a banana, and a little coconut milk for creaminess (I like to add vanilla protein powder, too)! It’s so good.
Jen @ Chocolate Chips & Tricep Dips says
I love a cold smoothie when it’s hot! Yum!!!
Annette@FitnessPerks says
Death by smoothie–thats how mine always look too! hah.
I’ve totally re-worn fitness clothes before…..but I usually air them out first 😉 hah
Ellie@Fit for the soul says
Oh dannng your smoothies always look so creamy and overflowing out of the cup. And I can’t get over just how busy your mornings are~but so productive! I agree that in the long run, experiences that force us to be flexible with our schedules and life in general are actually a VERY good thing.

Hi Julie,
Do you have any tips for juggling it all? How do you manage waking up so early for work and taking care of Sadie? Do you have any tips on being able to get up so early in the am and still remain so high spirited and cheery?
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat says
Sounds like a busy day! Loving the sound of that smoothie! Yummy!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Busy busy busy! But it sounds like you’re enjoying your new job which is always a good thing! 🙂
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
Sometimes the grossest looking things are the best! I am thinking that this was most definitely the case for this smoothie because chocolate and berries make for a fabulous combination! 🙂

What chocolate protein powder do you recommend? Thanks!

I’ve been following your blog for over a year now and you’ve inspired me to start thinking about using my passion for fitness to teach – not sure if I am cut out for it or not though – whether it be personal trainer or group exercise. Would be a big jump out of my comfort zone for sure! Any words of wisdom?
Eryn @ Blond Minded Brunete says
Your job looks like so much fun! To be able to help others while being so active at the same time, surrounded by people trying to improved their lives, can’t get much better!
nicole says
if i was working outside everyday at noon, i’d probably have a smoothie everyday for lunch! chocolate smoothies are delish, not everything that tastes delicious can look pretty 😉
Jan @ Sprouts n Squats says
Loving my smoothies at the moment I will have to try adding some spinach in. I’ve been reluctant to try it as I’m worried it will make it taste funny but I need to just bite the bullet and give it go 🙂
Sara @ sarasmiles says
I’m a total planner too and when things/my day doesn’t go according to plan, it really throws me off. It used to make me very anxious but now I’m learning ya gotta just roll with it!
Carrie says
Where did you get your shirt?
AJ says
I would never have thought to combine blueberries and chocolate, but this sounds pretty tasty! I will have to give it a try, thanks for the idea!

I need a plan/schedule or else I go beserk. The problem is that with my current job, and boss, that doesn’t happen. I’m working on the whole “being spontaneous” thing…
You seem like you’re really loving your job, which is wonderful. I hope one day that I can find something that I’m passionate about like that! I’m hitting a quarter life crisis where I’m not sure what I’m doing with myself these days…haha.
Kale + dark chocolate cocoa powder makes for the worst looking smoothie ever, like straight mud. But it’s SO GOOD.
Megan @ www.solerunner.blogspot.com says
WOW! That smoothie looks AMAZE! I am sooo jealous! I would SOOOO hire you for my trainer! I bet you will completely booked in no time! I have been MIA from your blog for a while, (and mine), I am a first grade teacher and this is by far the busiest time of the year. But if feels so good to be back! Love the BIC band too!! Have a great day!
J says
No banana in the smoothie . Hmm…
I don’t have a blender a the moment…soon. Maybe I will try to get a very cheap tiny one …magic bullet or similar I guess.
Thoughts on where I can find a month long fitness program for a beginner with no gym and limited space? The Fitnessista (good blogger, etc) posted hers for summer…but I was disappointed to see how complicated and “advanced”it is….I have no gym…can barely jog 2 steps, jumping, etc is out..
I LONG for a plan to feel proud and accomplished and slowly progress (I want to gain health + energy + muscle + lean muscle tone). I want to write down what I did each day and have a plan for each week…but don’t know where to find one or who to ask (website, book, ? blogger with it? You give me one and I’ll pay you $15-20 bucks for it 🙂 …I’m very financially strapped…or give you a “testimonial” after?
Anyway…thanks 🙂
J says
Okay…I just found this: http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/get-a-bikini-body
Is it too loosey goosey? I guess you cant’ see it (unless you just plug in your email address for the “printable” download…but no machines or gym or cardio…
– 2 toning workouts (squats, etc…just about 3 exercises)
– 2 interval (some lateral shuffles, jump squats…I can modify maybe 🙁
– 2 “easy” days…I guess for most that’d be bike/run….but for me…walking I guess 🙁
still not what I want…but better than scouring internet getting lost I guess. I find too at times I REALLY like a lot of “at home” doable circuits on people’s blogs…but then I don’t know how to put them into an overall plan versus just finding it one day and then repeating myself or having no written “plan”…
I dunno…
the only thing there that would need equipment is called a cross-body “chop” with a resistance band or machine…don’t have that…so guess could just sub in regular pushups (SOMETHING doable)…its 21 days…anyway…sorry, venting/journaling my lack of structure frustrations 🙂
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
check out tinareale.com. she has a best body bootcamp fitness plan that is scalable for all fitness levels!

Hi, but I’ve seen your workouts from her and they look intense or require gym or lots of jumps or elliptical…I’m BASIC back to beginner beginner 🙂 I’m the person before beginner 🙂
