Sneak some superfoods into your snack time with these Sneaky Chocolate Superfood Energy Bites! With a sweet, lightly salty and perfectly fudgy taste, you’ll never know these no bake energy bites contain superfoods like spirulina, wheatgrass and spinach. (They’re also vegan and gluten-free!) Thank you so much to ALOHA for sponsoring this post!
If you pop over to Pinterest, one thing is for certain: There is no shortage in the number of recipes for energy bites out there. You can find energy bite recipes to satisfy nearly every craving under the sun from pumpkin spice energy bites to key lime pie bites. But how many of these energy bites have organic spinach, organic wheatgrass juice, organic spirulina, organic beet juice and organic white button mushrooms in them? I’m going to guess that the number of recipes for energy bites containing any of these ingredients drops down dramatically… and maybe that’s not a terrible thing because spinach and mushroom energy bites sound kind of gag-inducing. But they don’t have to be! They can be sweet and chocolaty and still packed with superfoods and vitamins.
Last week, I made batch of energy bites to have at home because I wanted a quick grab-and-go snack on hand that I could take with me when I needed some energy on the run. I didn’t want to go to the grocery store again so I made the bites using ingredients I almost always have around the house, including cocoa powder, nuts, nut butter and dates. But then I decided to add a little extra nutrition into the energy bites and incorporated some superfoods into the mix and Sneaky Superfood Chocolate Energy Bites were born!
The superfoods came in the form of ALOHA Chocolate Superfood Greens powder, a non-GMO whole food supplement containing 12 essential nutrients from a mix of dried superfoods. (It’s also gluten-free and vegan.) The Superfood Greens powder can be added to a cold cup of almond milk, a warm bowl of oatmeal or blended into smoothies which was my personal favorite way to enjoy it… until I added it to these energy bites!
To make the energy bites, I broke out my food processor and pulsed the dates, cashew butter, pecan pieces, ALOHA Chocolate Superfood Greens powder and cocoa powder until a thick, relatively smooth dough formed. A quick taste of the dough told me I was on the right track with these energy bites. They tasted like a sweet and salty brownie batter, perfectly fudgy with a rich, chocolate taste.
While I used cashew butter in this recipe, you can use any nut butter you like but oh my gosh the cashew butter is WONDERFUL in this recipe. It’s buttery and smooth and served as the perfect base but you can absolutely swap any kind of natural nut butter in its place. Just make sure the nut butter is a bit on the runnier side since a natural, slightly liquidy nut butter works best in this recipe. (You know the kind of nut butter that’s super annoying to spread on bread? THAT KIND. Use that nut butter in this recipe!) You may also swap out the pecans for another nut of your choice. Talk about an easy recipe to customize, huh!? Just don’t mess with the cocoa powder and superfood greens powder… they are key for a brownie batter-like energy bite!

We are big fans of protein balls/bars! I love how easy there are to make – the only thing I don’t appreciate is how dangerously addicting they are 😉

SUPER RANDOM!
Julie- this is super random, but I was wondering if you can put together a post on your skincare routine. I know you don’t use makeup that often, but maybe throw in what you do there, too?
I’ve just noticed your skin looks particularly vibrant and healthy in recent pictures and I’m wondering what has worked for you! I have finally won the battle against acne but I’m always looking for ways to make my skin look and feel more fresh!
April says
Hey, Is there another kind of substitute for the protein powder?
