I have quite a yummy recipe to share with you today!
This recipe is brought to you by: My internet went down and to avoid freaking out over my lack of ability to send out an important article, I made cookies.
(Follow up: Then I ate way too many of the cookies, drove to Burger King and hopped on their internet from the parking lot to get my work done and publish this blog post.)
Cookies make any situation a little bit better.
And good news! These cookies are made with oats, whole wheat flour and canola oil which means they’re completely healthy… right? Sure.
Cocoa Oatmeal Cookies
Makes 10 – 12 cookies (depending on how much dough you eat)
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon cocoa powder (may increase to 3 teaspoons if you desire a more chocolaty cookie)
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 3 tablespoons canola oil
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup old fashioned oats
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Combine flours, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl.
- In a smaller bowl, combine sugars and beat in one egg.
- Mix canola oil and vanilla into sugar mixture .
- Slowly beat sugar mixture into flour mixture. Your dough should be slightly runny.
- Gradually beat oats into mixture until a thicker dough forms.
- Use a tablespoon to portion out cookies onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or sprayed with cooking spray.
- Bake for 8 – 10 minutes, until tops of cookies are slightly browned.
I was really impressed with how these cookies turned out since I was just playing around in the kitchen and didn’t have high hopes. I loved the light touch of cocoa flavor and the chewiness from the oats. These will definitely be made in this house again!

a non-functioning internet is the WORST… especially when you work from home. it literally drives me up the wall, even when it’s acting slow. i feel your pain!!

Hi Julie, I just made these and even though they still taste good, they are crumbly and my dough wasnt runny like you mentioned before I added the oats..hmm but they still taste good! haha

These cookies sound and look delicious! I’ve always loved oatmeal cookies and the thought of cocoa oatmeal cookies is making my mouth water! I think I have all the ingredients! I definitely want to make these 🙂
Jenny says
Those cookies look so chock full ‘o oats! If you threw in some chocolate chips with the cocoa powder too, that could kick any chocolate craving. Oats, whole wheat flour, canola oil, and dark chocolate = still healthy cookies 😉
peanutbutterfingers says
i was SO wishing we had chocolate chips on hand!!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Chocolate and whole wheat flour?!! I am GAME.
I would totally ‘take’ some Internet if mine went down and I had work that had a deadline. I am sure you’ll eat at Burger King at some point to repay them. Hah 😉

Roz @ Fit Blogging for Fun, Family & Profit says
Those look yummy! However I think I would end up with about 6 cookies as I would eat most of the dough. mmmmmm.
Carrie says
DUDE! i LOVEE oatmeal cookies!!! that texture is perfect
Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola says
Ughh internet issues are the worst! There’s something so stressful about technology failing right when you need it the most! And those cookies look delish! I think I would make mine extra chocolatey and add some dark chocolate chips too! (Love how you base your serving size on the amount of dough that is eaten.. haha amazing!)
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
Ohh those look really good! Here’s hoping you get your internet back soon!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
I’m thinking these would be a great application for my remaining coconut oil.
Brigitt says
The cookies just had to turn out, especially since everything else was going wrong! I bet they would taste so delicious as is, but I couldn’t help but imagine cranberries and white chocolate chips in these!! Maybe I’m a little too hungry today?
P.S. Bootlegging internet from Burger King is so something I would do. But, I’d probably also order a whopper junior. oops.
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
These look delicious! And I totally agree, cookies can make any situation better! In my opinion, peanut butter can too! 😉
Hilliary @Happily Ever Healthy says

I had no idea that Burger King had internet. Good to know!
Those cookies look so good. I love that it makes a small batch so you don’t have a ton laying around. I’ll definitely have to try them.

I think oatmeal cookies have got to be one of my all-time faves… and now you’ve made me want one really badly!! Glad you managed to track down some internet!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Hahaha I love the addition to the recipe: Makes 10-12 (depending on how much cookie dough you eat). I always eat too much cookie dough and then somehow end up surprised that I don’t have enough cookies!

Other places to bootleg internet – Panera, Holiday Inn (or any other budget hotel that has free internet….Super 8, Days Inn. Might be hit or miss though, Holiday Inn its always a gurantee). If you have trouble connecting, just connect to the network then type in your browser bar 1.1.1
That will take you to whatever screen you need to go to to connect to the local network.
I’m a “pro” at bootlegging internet in times of work induced desperation. I hope its not illegal, since I’m a lawyer and all!
Heather H. @ Run Eat Play says
Yum! I love oats in cookies! These look delicious!
Hope your Internet is up soon!

I love chocolate chip oatmeal cookies, so I bet I’d like these too! I hate lousy internet – I’ve been having the same problem at my office! The wifi keeps dropping.. And part of my office does technology consulting- go figure.
Felicia @ Chef Roommate says
I’m totally going to make these since I have everything on hand and throw in some pecans since I have those too! I hope your internet gets fixed quick, but focusing on a new project was a great way not to get overwhelmed.
Martha says
I don’t think bootleg means what you think it does…

We made healthy oatmeal cookies with apple butter, oats, and walnuts for Thanksgiving! They weren’t too sweet, but soft, chewy, and delicious.

It was probably about 30 minutes between the time I read this post and had these babies all mixed up and in the oven. I’m wondering how many batches of these cookies are being made all over the country right now…would be fun to find out! I’m in Massachusetts… I LOVE how so many of your recipes use ingredients I have on hand, by the way. Keep ’em coming!
India says
I did the same thing! They are baking in the oven now 🙂
Cara @callabee.blogspot.com says
I live in the country, so our internet is always up and down and in and out depending on how the wind blows. I usually just drive up and down the road a bit and see who doesn’t have locked wireless and tap in. 🙂 Redneck I know.
My mother in law has been making cookies like this for forever. A Hershey’s recipe from like 1920. They are my husband’s favorite. Only change is she adds a touch of almond extract in addition to all of the other ingredients. Makes it super super yummy. I usually have to make a double batch because the fam gobble them up for breakfast too!
Amanda says
I read this post and decided right away that me and my 4 year old son HAD to make them – of course with the extra cocoa powder since we are both chocolate lovers! Turned out great and you’re right about the cookie dough – couldn’t keep his little fingers out of it!
peanutbutterfingers says
so glad you were able to make them with your son! how fun!! 🙂
Kerr says
I made these tonight and they are fantastic!

These look so good! I am a chocolate girl at heart but oatmeal cookies are my favorite because of the dense, chewy texture. I’m thinking of making these with coconut and butterscotch or chocolate chips thrown in. Or dried cranberries! So many possibilities…thanks for sharing!
Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles says
I would definitely add more cocoa powder – and maybe some chocolate chips! Looks like they turned out great though.
Barbara says
No such thing as ‘too many cookies’. Literally. Every time people say that they ate too many cookies, it ends up being something like “6” or “8”– that is not a big deal. Enjoy it. If it was “I ate an entire box of hydrogenated-trans fat filled cookies–for every day this week”… then there would be a cause for concern. These look wonderful! ps- I consider 10-12 a single serving portion! lol Especially with ingredients like this- I would estimate it at 80-90 kcal max! GREAT JOB Julie, I definitely need to make some cookies soon!
Mandy says
I was in the process of making these and then realized that I didn’t have the brown sugar so I added some extra regular sugar. I also added the extra cocoa powder. I’m not sure if anyone else had a similar issue but I had to bake my cookies for 15 minutes and they still fell apart a bit. They were still delicious though.
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
Mmmm these look amazing!! So big and fluffy and chewy.
Emily says
Yum! These look delicious. And they could easily be made vegan. I can’t wait to try them!
Michelle says
Hey Julie! I’ve never commented before, but I’ve been reading your blog for a couple months now. I wanted to tell you that since these cookies looked so delish, I actually made them for a holiday party I went to tonight. And… they were SUCH a hit!!!! I received so many compliments and someone even asked for the recipe!!! No worries though, I’ll make sure to credit you when I give her the recipe 🙂 Thanks so, so much! 🙂
