Wanna know how you know when you’re completely enthralled with a book?
When you have to get out of the house and leave the book behind to resist the temptation to drop everything and read.
Take me to Starbucks and get me away from The Violets of March!
The book was calling to me to abandon my projects and simply read the day away, so I called Ryan after lunch and convinced him to meet me at Starbucks for a quick midday date and brought my laptop to get to work after we enjoyed our festive beverages.
Peppermint mocha for me, chai crème Frappuccino for Ryan!
Doesn’t he look all Christmasy in his red polo?
Lunch
Before our date, I made myself a cheesy quesadilla with onion and kidney beans.
I’m trying to use up everything in the fridge before we head to our parents’ houses for Christmas and this quesadilla incorporated some cheese and onions on the verge of death. Expect some random meals in the near future, my friends.
Question of the Afternoon
- What was the last book that completely captivated you?
The last book that completely sucked me in was Divergent. If you liked The Hunger Games, you need to read Divergent!
P.S. The Fashion page was updated today.
Amber K says
Currently I’m enthralled with Sybil Exposed – nonfiction about the famous multiple personality case. The last one was Mindy Kaling’s book – so hilarious!

Linsey T says
I LOVE Violets of March! I read it in two days. I couldn’t put it down. I’ve shared it with my friends. Another really good book is Exposure by Theresa Fowler. It’s loosely based on the Fowler’s real life experience. I didn’t care for the ending but loved the book!
Hope says
It’s funny that you are cleaning out your fridge. I haven’t been to the supermarket in over a week. The longest that I’ve gone without going. Definitely restocking my fridge tonight! 🙂
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I’m reading Born to Run right now, and I’m about to head out and try and get all my errands done so I can take it to a coffee shop and read to my heart’s desire! It’s such an interesting book!!!
Lindsey says
The Help did that to me! I couldn’t put it down. I wanted to find out what happened but didn’t want the book to end. I love when that happens!
P.S. LOVE the fact that you’re taking pics of yourself in Starbucks!
Cara @ EAT.PRAY.RUN. says
I’m doing the same thing with the food in my house! My parents are coming into town and I know we we hardly be around to cook, except for Christmas of course!
Janine @ThePurpleGiraffe says
That’s how I was with the Hunger Games. I read all three books last week when I was out sick from work. I swear I was sick, and not just making an excuse to stay home and read.
chelsea says
I’m completely in love with The Black Dagger Brotherhood! Vampires, romance, and fighting all in one story?! I’m so in hahaha 🙂

Last 3 books to do that for me:
A Good Hard Look by Ann Napolitano
Light on Snow by Anita Shreve
Fire in the Blood by Irène Némirovsky
The first book I ever EVER had that feeling with?
Love Walked In by Maria De Los Santos
[i feel like as a fellow book-worm, you needed a whole LIST, not just one book 😉 ]

Christine @ Oatmeal in my Bowl says
I can’t remember the last time I was enthralled with a new book. But I do want to read The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo. And I need to find out what all this HUnger Game stuff is about. 😉 Seems to be the thing right now.
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo series is TOTALLY enthralling. They were very well done! And Hunger Games series ROCKS!
Amanda says
BAH!!! I asked for this book for Christmas and it is taking all the willpower I have NOT to download it on my Kindle before I wait to see if Santa brings it this weekend. And I must say, your raving about it is not helping! But I did LOVE the Hunger Games series, so I shall take this as your apology and will get myself Divergent instead. Thanks for the suggestion!
Allison says
Loveddd “Teach Like a Champion” but that’s because I’m a first-year teacher and I’ll take any teaching advice anyone is willing to offer me 😛
SkinnyRunner says
i might possibly have the worst taste in books because i read half of hunger games, thought it was weird and quit reading it. never found out if the girl lived or not.
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I guess I need to read Divergent then!! I seriously love “Violets of March”–thanks for choosing it.
I can’t wait to talk to you about it–soo freakin’ good.
Love the lunch idea!
LauraJayne says
I love the read, so I’m always getting caught up in a book – the most recent one was Jo Nesbo’s first book (I can’t remember the name). I read it in one sitting!
When I read Escape (a memoir from Carolyn Jessop about leaving the FLDS community), I was so enthralled that I took a half-day from work to come home and finish it!
Rachel says
LauraJayne – I just finished “The 19th Wife”…. if you liked Escape I bet you would enjoy it. It is fiction but doesn’t feel like it!
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
Hunger Games totally did it for me. I read all 3 books in less then 2 weeks :). I am still plugging through Sarah’s Key. Was totally into it, but then summer vacation ended and I am grading papers instead of reading.
I do have Divergent downloaded already… so that is next on the list!!
Amanda says
I finally got the nerve to click purchase on amazon to buy this book… I’m just starting to get back into reading so I had to get this book! AWESOME! I’m not even on page 100 but the book feels like my family! love it!
katelyn says
The Hunger Games. If you haven’t read them, please do yourself a favor and read them. I read them all back to back to back. I finished the first one and went and bought the second and third because I couldn’t wait another second and then proceeded to read all three in 2 1/2 days… I might not have slept.
Melissa says
I LOVED the Violets of March SO much that I immediately reread it as soon as I finished! Love Sarah’s writing!
allison says
Besides Hunger games, the Something Borrowed and Something Blue series by Emily Giffin had me hooked!

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get in the reading spirit much this year at all. 🙁 I’ve been super busy adjusting to a new job. But I would say that the last book that had me completely encapsulated would be Room: A Novel by Emma Donaghue. SUCH an amazing book!
erica says
i haven’t been reading in about three months! i still have a barely read game of thrones on my kindle, but i have a list going of books i want to read. i think i’ll add this one to the list!
Jen@FoodFamilyFitness says
I can’t even tell you the last time I picked up a book. Things have been crazy and I’m actually looking forward to January when it all slows down again.
Your random lunch looks totally normal to me, anything quick and with cheese is good around here 🙂
Danielle @ dish'n'dash says
I just finished “A Season in Hell” – about two Canadian diplomats kidnapped by Al Qaeda in Niger in 2008. Couldn’t put it down! The book came out a couple months ago and it is amazing how many details the author – Robert Fowler – could recall. Anyone interested in international politics should read this.
Also recently finished “Best Laid Plans” which was extremely witty and smartly written. If you’re a (Canadian) politics junkie and want to be entertained by a fictional account of a federal election, this book is for you! And there is a hovercraft in it. Hovercraft = awesome.
Off to get Violets of March from the library – will be my Christmas holiday reading!
Electra @ Vanilla Bean Lean says
Sometimes those random meals end up being the best ones you’ve ever had 🙂
Alysha @shesontherun.com says
The Hunger games! I can’t wait for the second book.
Steph @ Will Run For Treats says
I did the exact same thing with Violets of March. Finished it in two days 🙂
Before that, I was completely sucked in by The Midwife’s Confession. It also had a little mystery to it, which gets me every time!
B says
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. A beautiful book. It was supposed to be an easy read before bed. I ended up staying up reading it.
Lily says
1. Thank you for this post, it is very timely–I am traveling at the end of this week and definitely need to put some enthralling books on my kindle.
2. The last books that I read that kept me from being productive were the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin (1st book is Game of Thrones). They are soooo good, you will not be able to get things done because you will need to know what is happening in The Realm.
joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
I LOVE when that happens w a book! I will say, The Marriage Plot did that for me, even though it infuriated me at the end haha.
Kelly says
The Red Queen by Phillipa Georgia…it is a series (The Cousins War) and the entire series is amazing.
Jen says
I just ordered it! Looking for to the discussion in Jan 🙂
Gillian says
“The Leftovers” by Tom Perrotta… it focuses on one town as they deal with The Rapture (yes, as predicted in the Bible!) I read it for my book club — it was so good! This is the same guy who wrote “Little Children” and “Election” and he sticks to his theme of twisted suburbia with a dark sense of humor. I definitely recommend it!
Corrie Anne says
The two books I could NOT PUT DOWN were Time Traveler’s Wife and the Help! I read both in ONE DAY. They are not small books. And I was in the middle of teaching full-time and grad school. Not a wise decision, but couldn’t put them down!!!!
Baby's Moon says
Violets of March…. Read it in about 8 hrs – finished it at about 4am – gets better as it goes along….
Paula @ lipstick and lunges says
I love the Starbucks peppermint mocha! I walk by one everyday on my way to work and it’s been really hard to limit myself to just 2 a week.
Getting sucked into a book is amazing, I’m a big reader. The last book that sucked me in was The Hunger Games. I really didn’t think I’d like it but wanted to read it since so many people (you included!) suggested. I got soo hooked and read all 3 books in under 2 weeks!
Tracy says
The last one that captivated me was Unbroken, and before that was Cutting for Stone….soooooo good!
Unforunately, I really didn’t enjoy Violets of March – which is funny because everyone in the blog world seems to LOVE it. Sometimes I think whether you like a book or not depends on where you are, if you have time to get really into it, if there’s stress in your life, etc. OK enough rambling!
Rachel says
The Red Tent was really interesting…. one of those “fiction” that really make you think!
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
I have that happen all the time where I just want to read and read and forget about everything else! I love when books can do that to you!
Sarah says
Oooh, I’ll have to check out that book! I love books-I-can’t-put-down.
I also loved Divergent (have a thing for young adult books). I just finished Legend, which was a new + good YA dystopian book.
Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries says
OMG I just finished The Hunger Games a few days ago and now I’m just as sucked in to the second book, Catching Fire. Did you read all three? I’m almost concerned about how obsessed I am with these books.
I lie. I’m very concerned.
Elisabeth says
I can’t wait to read The Violets of March now!
Molly at Duchess of Fork says
The Hunger Games, for sure! I read the entire series in 2 weeks. I also couldn’t put down Saving CeeCee Honeycutt. It’s an easy read. You should consider it for your book club!
