Hey there, gnocchi!
I nabbed this pack of Gia Russa whole wheat gnocchi made with sweet potato at the grocery store on Sunday and was so excited to try it that I cut open the pack on Sunday night to try a raw one.
Bad idea.
Raw gnocchi is freakin’ nasty!
Fortunately cooked gnocchi is delicious… though this particular pack had kind of a weird aftertaste.
I cooked the whole wheat gnocchi while roasting cauliflower and broccoli to served with the dumplings.
Once everything was ready, I topped it all off with marinara sauce and a generous sprinkle of parmesan cheese.
I loved the doughy texture of the gnocchi but am not sure I’d buy this brand again because of the odd aftertaste.
Almost Easter
Before signing off for the night, can I get three cheers for only two days remaining in the work week? I am so looking forward to Easter and seeing my family and Ryan’s family. I feel like it has been forever since we’ve seen everyone!
We’re spending Easter at Ryan’s mom’s house and are planning on helping his mom prepare a delicious brunch. In case you are looking for a fun Easter dish to make this weekend, I highly recommend baking a bunny cake!
Not only are they delicious, but they’re festive and adorable!
Here are two options that my mom, sister and I made last year…
And now I want cake. Hmph.
Only a couple more days until I welcome sweets back into my life! This whole yogurt for dessert thing is getting o-l-d.

I’m obsessed with sweet potatoes AND gnocchi (i’m half italian, after all!) but i HATED that gnocchi! I bought it a few weeks ago and threw over half of it away. 🙁 Maybe I got a bad batch. LOL
peanutbutterfingers says
No, it definitely had a strange aftertaste!
Jen says
I’ve never had gnocchi before, looks interesting!
Cute bunny cakes!!! I can’t believe it’s Easter already, guess I better buy some crap for the kiddies baskets…
Vanessa @ Swift as Shadows says
I’ve always wondered what raw gnocchi tastes like. You’ve since curbed my curiosity. 😉
Woo-hoo for bunny cakes!
peanutbutterfingers says
If you try it, don’t buy that brand b/c the aftertaste is fuuuunky.
Ellen @ Cinnamonalicious says
Those cakes are the cutest!! My sister and I were thinking of what sort of cake to make for Easter Sunday – NOW I KNOW!! 😀
I bet you’re more than excited for sweeties, I’m majorly impressed at how well you’ve done. Let me tell you, I couldn’t do it!
The Teenage Taste says
I love gnocchis. Pure doughy deliciousness. Haha!
My vote is for bunny #2 – I love the 3D look! 😀
Chad says
Man – I love me some gnocchi. it’s been a long time since I had some.
Our health food store is selling these ravioli stuffed with butternut squash that I am curious to play with a little.
Parita @ myinnershakti says
Spinach ricotta gnocchi is my favorite! I love how you topped this one though…boo for the weird aftertaste. 🙁
Sylvia @ Frolic Through Life says
Reading your blog always makes me hungry. Your dinner looks delish I think I need some gnocchi in my life – I can’t remember the last time I had it.
Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles says
I LOVE gnocchi! Trader Joe’s sells some great gnocchi – mmm!
carlee says
Hey Julie! Quick Question…HOW did you design your blog yourself with the name header and stuff and also do you pay 17 dollarrs a year for your own domain name?
peanutbutterfingers says
I bought my domain through GoDaddy and had The Blog Fairy help with my design.
Whitney says
I bought that same brand and had the same thoughts! It was not very good at all. Trader Joe’s has the best pre made gnocchi!
peanutbutterfingers says
Yeah, definitely won’t buy it again!
Brittany says
Agree, raw gnocchi is super gross. Had gnocchi for the first time in Italy. My friend had ordered it because it’s her fave but when my tortellini came out with meat in it she traded with me because she’s awesome. I’ve been meaning to make some homemade gnocchi for a while now. Im working on being less intimidated by making my own food.
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I love gnocchi–good choice, SOrry about the aftertaste-boo.
I LOVE your bunny cakes!! You get to eat cake SO soon-hold on there, girl, you are almost there 🙂
Allison @ Happy Tales says
Whoa, this cakes are ADORABLE!!! Will you be making another one for this year? I bet you’re counting down the days ’til your bday ice-cream cake.. ha!
peanutbutterfingers says
I hope to, but I’m not sure about what Ryan’s mom has planned or will need help with, so we will see!
Sarah says
Why on earth would you be compelled to eat raw gnocchi
peanutbutterfingers says
B/c it looked doughy and delicious. Big mistake.
Maria @ Oh Healthy Day says
Bunny cakes are so cute!
Will you be doing a recap of how it went giving up sugar for Lent? I’m curious because I’d like to cut out sweets for a while 🙂
Jessica says
That second bunny is just too darn cute!
I think you should get an Easter basket to celebrate the return of sweets into your life!
Anna says
Dinner looks delish! 1 more work day for me and den I’m done! Wooohooo for easter! Those cakes look awsome unfortunatly I suck at baking so I’m just gna go to my convenient handy dandy ice cream store and get a cake from there lol
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
I’ll give you a woot woot for having only ONE more day of work left! The joys of being a teacher! 😉
I can only imagine how horrible raw gnocchi would taste!!!
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
Cute bunny cakes!
That gnocci looks delish. Guess the rule for eating things raw.. like oats..wheat germ.. does not apply to these babies!
Meghan @ StruggleMuffins says
The bunny cakes are too cute!
Kimberley says
the cakes are toooo cute!
Sunday is just around the corner 😉 and your birthday…and the weekend! You have alot to look forward too
Amanda says
Yumm–your dinner looks delicious! 🙂
Natalie @ ittleedibles says
love the bunny cake! we used to make a baby chick cake for easter. so good. and so cute. re: gnocchi – it is one of my favorite foods, but i’m not sure i would even bother going the health-food route with it. it’s a simple food on its own, being potato based, and real gnocchi is made with white flour anyway. try it with pesto!
Kelly says
I’ve tried that brand before and I agree….it does have a funky aftertaste!! I am honestly not a huge gnocchi fan because it so heavy to me.
fittingbackin says
Those cakes are so cute! Happy (early) Easter!
I’m not a fan of gnocchi – my husband loves it though and always tries to eat it when we’re out since I rarely make it at home!
Jenna says
that brand is gross. i was so excited for it, i bought 2 packs and tossed both.
Tara says
I bought the same Gnocchi the other day and it’s sitting on my counter as a reminder to eat it soon 🙂 Bummer that it had a weird after taste. If mine is amazing with no after taste I will let you know 😉
Holly says
That’s funny… I’ve had that gnocchi many times and never thought it tasted funny. Let us know if you find a better brand!
Chelsea J says
I know whole wheat is better for you, but regular gnocchi is actually way better. My husband and I make it pretty often and its really easy, but whole wheat sucks. lol!!! I will say though I have never been brave enough to try it raw!
Gen says
Too bad the gnocchi wasn’t wonderful……. I’ve actually never tried it!
chrysta says
oh love gnocchi! although I might pass on it raw=) Cute cakes!
Meg @ pinkgiggles says
Those cakes are adorbs! I need to make one. I’m also excited for Easter to welcome chocolate back into my life!
Kaitlyn @ 7 Plates says
Never even heard of gnocchi before, haha. I can’t wait for Easter too! Cute cakes!
Jamie aka "Sometimes Healthy Girl" says
Aww those cakes are precious! I can’t believe you last so long without sweets. I cannot imagine my life without fro-yo. You are a strong woman, my friend. Only a couple more days!
peanutbutterfingers says
I will be diving face-first into the dessert table on Sunday!
Molly says
My cousin and I always used to make shredded coconut easter bunny cakes…brings back memories
Tessa @ Amazing Asset says
I have seen that brand of gnocchi in the grocery store and contemplated trying it. Glad I didn’t now though! Sorry it tasted terrible uncooked, yuck 🙁
Those.cakes.are.adorable. I am going to persuade my dad to create one with me!
What sweet treat would you say you are looking forward to the most when you break lent? If I had the will power you do (I certainly do not) the first thing I would have is a brownie with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sprinkles on top 😀 (my favorite dessert!)
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
you’re braver than i am! raw gnocchi sounds terrible! at least we know now that it actually is 🙂
Alaina says
I am so looking forward to Easter too. I have a three day weekend! (which is rare in my occupation.) I’m spending it with the in-law family. 🙂
I like the second bunny cake. Too cute!
Presley says
Definitely bunny cake number one!
I used to make that cake every year for my birthday/Easter with my grandma! That cake is near and dear to me 🙂 I always thought it was so cool that you made a bunny out of two round cakes… I was easily amused.
Kristen says
I made a bunny cake last year! They are so easy and fun to decorate!~
Heather says
I only had gnocchi once – when my 9 year old ordered it at a restaurant!
Just wondering – have you lost any weight from cutting out the desserts?
Khushboo says
I’m curious about this too…because it doesnt seem like you have been compensating in other areas)
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
I’m not sure! I hope to do a recap post and will let you know. 🙂
Sarah @ The Pajama Chef says
cute cake!
Khushboo says
I love gnocchi! Maybe even more so than pasta! It just tastes so carby and delicious…cooked of course ;)!
Kristina says
So. I read this post, and guess what I ended up getting at the grocery store? Gnocchi. Definitely not as good as my Nonna’s homemade gnocchi, but wasn’t too bad! Thanks for the food-spiration!
Gen says
Yes gnocchis are pretty delilious with a light tomato sauce and some parmesan cheese! You know that it’s really easy to make yourself, and I think that it could be even better than the aftertaste you had.
Michelle @ Lifewithacrazypup says
Strange question. Over Thanksgiving when you were going to make either the cake and pie mess or the meat and potato cake… did you ever make one of them? I read your blog every day and must have completely missed it!
Maddie says
I love bunny cakes! I was born the day before Easter, so every year for my birthday I have a bunny cake! I turned 26 a few weeks ago and my mom made one for me! You can see the fine creation (with a few bites out of the bow tie) here: http://betterfoodandfitness.blogspot.com/2011/04/last-day-of-25.html
Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries says
I want to try to make one of those cakes, but I have a feeling they’d be quite difficult! We’re spending Easter with my future in-laws and Cory’s mom is the BEST baker in the world. I’m too intimidated to bake something and bring it their house!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
My fiance’ wants to “pre-game” for Easter morning by eating sweets at 12:01 the night before! =)
Congrats on sticking with it, I know it was tough for me to give up sugar but got progressively less tempting as time went on. I’m hoping I can pratice more moderation after this experience!
