Today we got our Halloween pumpkin!
Isn’t it a good one?
I’m still not sure what design we’ll carve this year (Sadie’s face), but I think that the long shape of the pumpkin will be ideal for carving.
We bought the pumpkin from Timberline Farm after spending the morning exploring the corn maze, petting zoo and farmer’s market with my father-in-law.
When we arrived at Timberline Farm, we made a beeline for the corn maze because we weren’t sure how long it would take to complete. Ryan have I have been to a corn maze that took nearly two hours to navigate before, but this one was quite simple and we were in and out in under 15 minutes.
Ryan’s dad was the line leader and picked all the right turns to get us out.
Success!
Since the corn maze took no time at all, we went back in the maze, and Ryan led the way back out of the entrance. Twice the fun!
Ten points to the person that can tell me what this is at first glance!
Any guesses?
Here’s a hint…
Pig snout!
The pigs were absolutely adorable. When we went to the farmer’s market stand to offer up our $.10 to buy some “pig food,” I was surprised when they handed us fresh tomatoes right out of one of the baskets they were selling to the people! Love that.
That little pig with its big pig smile reminded me of Babe! La, la, la!
The pigs loved the tomatoes and we had a great time watching them smoosh the tomatoes so the juice ran down their faces.
We made sure to give attention to the other adorable animals as well before heading to the pumpkin patch.
(I took that bunny picture for you, Paula. Maybe a boyfriend for Bunnypants/ a substitute for the stuffed cow?)
Before we left the farm, I bought the teeniest little apple on the planet.
It was a little bigger than a plum and so sweet!
Lunch
When we arrived back home, it was lunchtime.
Ryan manned the grill while I prepared some veggies on the stovetop.
Chicken sausage + sautéed squash and onion + a pickle for me!
During lunch we enjoyed the last bit of time we had with Ryan’s dad before he headed back home. It was sad to see him go!
Fall Baking
Once we said our goodbyes, it was time for some fall baking.
When Ryan’s mom came to visit a couple weeks ago, she gave us an autumn sugar cookie kit, and since we got our pumpkin earlier in the day, I figured we would keep the festive fall feelings alive and bake some pumpkin and leaf sugar cookies.
Easier said than done…
Even after adequately flouring the countertops, the dough was still super sticky and when we tried to cut out the shapes, they wanted to stick to the counter.
Check out our sad pumpkins and single leaf:
Pathetic.
After cutting out those three cookies, we didn’t bother using the cutouts for the remaining dough.
Still tasty in the end!
Now guess how many of those cookies are left?
None.
Great Sunday!
Sweet and Savvy says
What an awesome fall day! I seriously need to find a corn maze around me. Halloween activities are always so much fun! 🙂
And I think you can just go ahead an call all of the round cookies pumpkins.. it works ! 😉
Tracy @ Tracy's Treats says
That sounds like a wonderful way to spend a Sunday. I’m looking forward to getting my pumpkin this year, too! Can’t wait to carve my “masterpiece”. 😉
Heather@Just a Colorado Gal says
Those pigs are seriously adorable! I’ve wanted a pet pig forever…but apparently they aren’t allowed in suburban homes? Weird.
Um, do you ship cookies, by chance?!
Nancy @ Beyoutiful Fitstyle says
Yay pumpkins!! Pumpking carving is the best part of fall – and baking the seeds! Pumpkin carving parties are so much fun! Cant wait to see what ya carve, I love checking out other people’s creativity in carving.
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
Those pigs are pretty cute! They make me thing of Wilbur from Charlotte’s Web.
Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) says
What a fun and festive day!! I have not been to a pumpkin patch since I was about 4.. Now that i’m living in D.C. though, I feel like I should scope out some local farms.. there’s got to be some places to go around norther VA I’d think. Have a great night! 🙂
Rachel says
Hey Joelle! I grew up in Northern VA, and we always went to Cox Farm when we were young. But you’re so right, there are a decent amount of places to go. I miss it there. Enjoy!
katie says
Yay for pumpkin fun! We did a corn maze last wknd, Mike was the leader and got us out, he did get us lost a couple times too ; )
Oh sugar cookies are so good, so is the dough, I would of had none left here either!
Happy Sunday Julie!
Lindsey @ Happy or Hungry says
The same thing happens to me when I make shortbread cookies! You gotta use parchment paper. It will be your new best friend. Also, I put the rolled dough in the freezer to chill it before I cut out the shapes. This makes it a little sturdier and easier to pop out of the cookie-cutters. I no longer hate my life when I am making Christmas cookies 🙂
I love that little piggy. I love doing fun festive fall (alliteration much?) things like the pumpkin patch shenanigans and apple picking! So much fun.
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
you roll out the dough on parchment paper? i need to try your tips!! i was really frustrated!
Lindsey @ Happy or Hungry says
yep, I actually roll the dough between two pieces of parchment paper because I find that my shortbread sticks to everything…including the counter and my non-stick roller, even if I use an entire bag of flour.
I was getting so frustrated, and I can’t even describe the difference it makes. The dough doesn’t stick to the parchment paper at all. Then I throw just the dough in the freezer for like 10 minutes before doing the cookie-cutter thang. It is beautiful!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Where’s the icing on those cookies?! Sugar cookies are only good with icing in my opinion 😉
I love going to pumpkin patches–one time we got super lost in a corn maze, and I was so antsy. so I don’t love them….maybe I am seriously pathetic when it comes to patience?? haha.
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
ha! i actually planned to make icing, but got so annoyed when i was making the cookies since they wouldn’t cut out correctly, that i chalked the whole experience up to a loss.
Amanda says
Those pigs are so cute. And now you have me craving sugar cookies! I really want to go apple picking this fall. I say that every year, but I need to set aside an afternoon and make it happen.
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
sugar cookies are one of my favorites! I make them every year for Christmas in different Christmas shapes, and then use powdered sugar frosting colored with food coloring and sprinkles! sooo much fun!
Tichina says
“Now guess how many of those cookies are left?
None.”
hahaha I love how you post such truth on your blog… what gal wouldn’t eat all of them up!?
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
Oh how fun! Josh and I just went to a farm today too. Must be the day for it! We were hoping there’d be a corn maze where we went, but there wasn’t. Glad you got to enjoy one!

What an awesome festive day, i wish my country had traditions like that.

That is the cutest little pig ever!! Can I have him as my pet? 🙂
Molly@thislifeissparkling.com says
I went to the pumpkin patch today too and they had a huge corn maze! We didn’t end up doing the maze, but it is definitely something I want to try sometime!

Put the sugar cookie dough in the fridge overnight and the dough won’t be as sticky! the cutouts will work better 🙂
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
Hee! I think Bunnypants would give up all 3 of her stuffed animals to get her hands on that hot little number.
Oh, and Fabian totally called out the pig snout without seeing the second picture. The man knows pigs!
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
This looks like such a fun day! Bummer about the cookies… but the packaging makes it looks so easy! 😉

Lyndsi @ Lyndsi and David says
Fun! We’re planning to carve a pumpkin sometime this week. Still need to get one though…
One of the things I loved about living in Virginia was all of the fall activities — and the leaves changing! We had the best apple cider at an event called “Pumpkinville”… we also went on a hayride and jumped in straw. Loved it.
Kelly says
That does sound like a great day!!
Claire says
Fun fun Sunday!! I love the pumpkin 🙂 Tell Ryan nice biceps (in the least creepy way possible), and holy guns for you too, lady! Gettin jakked haha! You are so right that piggy looks a LOT like Babe…LA LA LA. Have a good night!
Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups says
Looks like the perfect fall day! I’m glad you guys didn’t get stuck in the corn maze until nighttime and didn’t have to call 911 to come and get you (did you hear that news story??). Can’t wait to see the carved pumpkin!
'Dee @ 'Dee's Garret says
What a fun day. I’ve nver done a corn maze and have always wanted to. Somehow it does not sound as much fun to my husband 🙂
Love the petting zoo! Now those, I’ve been to, and they were lucky I didn’t leave with every furry creature packed into the back of my Jeep. Loves.
Jenny says
I’m scared to do a corn maze because I’m afraid I’ll never find my way out. Pathetic – I know. Cookies look hilarious!
Krystina (Organically Me) says
That place looks so cute! I wish I could find one around Orlando.
Julie says
For some reason, I keep staring at the apple and it looks regular-sized! Then I look at the picture and my hand and I get it…
~Christy @ wonderofallthings says
love all the animal pics, especially the first “feeding the tomato to the pig” one…totally reminded me of Babe! So cute!
Alaina says
Yeah for corn mazes! I’ve done a few before; they are fun. 🙂
Fall is the best time of year! Can’t wait to see what you carve in the pumpkin.
Meg says
Eeeep pumpkin carving to come?!
The piggies are adorable 🙂
Joe @ The Frolicking Fells says
I’d like to try a corn maze. We tried a mirror maze up in Niagara Falls a few years ago and it wasn’t much fun at all. I got a bit dizzy and nauseous because of all of the different mirrors and Sheila started getting worried that we weren’t ever going to be able to find our way out!
We went raspberry picking for Sheila’s birthday and the farmers had 3 adorable Border Collies on site with which people could play. Problem was…they didn’t have any biscuits or treats to give them, and all of the toys that they had were on the other side of the fence! Got some great pics though.
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
What a fun and festive day!! Love it. I never do a very good job with cut out cookies… They take a lot of patience and the dough has to be a perfect consistency. As long as they taste good, right?? 😉
khushboo says
What a fun Sunday! Add cookie cutters to your Xmas list…although shapes are overrated so long as they taste yum!
Jenn @ Lotus and Pie says
I would love to see you carve a pumpkin to look like Sadie’s face. That would be amazing haha.. 🙂
Nicole says
Sounds like the perfect fall day!!
Hope says
What a great fun fall day! I think those cookies still look great! 🙂
Ross says
Ryan looks like he just did arms or some pushups before taking that first pic. Taking a page out of the Jersey Shore book! Just kidding.
Jessica says
Cookies look delish! Did you hear about the family that got lost in the corn maze and had to call 911? Here’s a link to the story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44875752/ns/us_news-weird_news/t/i-am-really-scared-family-lost-corn-maze-calls-help/
