One of my former coworkers was also into healthy eating and experimenting in the kitchen and I loved talking with her about her favorite recipes. We’d constantly swap meal ideas and our other coworkers would look at us like we were nut jobs when we discussed drinking smoothies with spinach in them or soaking oatmeal overnight for breakfast the next morning (aka “overnight oats”).
One time she came into the office raving about homemade chocolate avocado mousse. I was totally intrigued but for some reason never attempted to make it until this evening.
As I was browsing around the internet for meal ideas last night, I ended up on the Dr. Oz website and saw that he posted a recipe for chocolate avocado mousse and instantly remembered my friend’s rave reviews.
Tonight I gave it a go!
Dr. Oz’s recipe seemed a little more complicated than what I was looking for and I searched around until I found a recipe on PublicRadio.org that looked like one I could adapt and simplify a bit in order to use ingredients I had on hand.
How does three ingredient dark chocolate avocado mousse sound to you?
Oh yes!
I simply combined a ripe avocado, dark chocolate cocoa powder and honey in a food processor until a thick and creamy mousse formed.
I literally licked the food processor clean.
I realize that this is quite dangerous but I braved the sharp blades to make sure every last bit of the chocolate mousse was consumed.

Notes
(Adapted from Chocolate Avocado Mousse Martinis via If It Makes You Healthy: More Than 100 Delicious Recipes Inspired by the Seasons cookbook)
Note: You may simply add more cocoa powder and honey if you prefer more chocolate or sweetness!
Double Note: I’d double if not triple this recipe if I were you. We only had one avocado on hand and I wanted more. Lots more.
And for those of you who are skeptical, I gave Ryan a bite of the mousse and asked him to guess what was in it. He had no idea!
Ryan actually said that it tasted an awful lot like brownie batter! I’d say that’s a pretty positive review, no?
Oh my gosh. You have no idea how well you just answered a craving of mine. Thank you! This sounds amazing.
I’ve been wanting to do this for like 3 years. And avocados are on sale this week. Hmmm….
me too! it has been on my radar foreverrr. i highly suggest you get to it. 🙂
Anything that tastes like brownie batter is a winner in my book. This looks fantastic, and I absolutely love that you only used 2 ingredients! I’m glad that I’m not the only one who has braved a sharp blade to lick off the last bit of a delicious treat 🙂
I was skeptical until I saw the ingredients. Avacados and honey are DELISH together! Add in cocoa? Sure, why not. Yum. This would be really good on top of a graham cracker. 🙂
Definitely made this last month… and then after eating my entire portion I attempted to steal my husband’s. It’s just so good!
yeah i thought i would be sharing it with ryan. that definitely didn’t happen… except for his one little “taste test” bite to make sure i wasn’t off my rocker for thinking it was so good!
Sounds great! I love avocados but I’m allergic…… Maybe just some raspberrie or other fruit in chocolate mouse would be good?
Holy crap – definitely making this tomorrow.
Julie Fagan, I love you.
ha! i love you right back. 😀
WOW – this looks incredible. and packed with healthy fats, which is what i’ve been aiming for lately! i’ve never even thought of using avocado in a sweet recipe!
I am so making this soon! I can’t believe it’s that simple!
to be honest, i have always wanted to try something like this, but have been so nervous (the avocado in a sweet dish kind of freaks me out)… BUT i think i trust your taste that i might have to give this a go 🙂
Oh. My. This looks amazing. I’ve been obsessed with avocadoes for the past couple months; I have a half of one almost every day. This would take my obsession to a totally new (and I bet, delicious) level!
I have wanted to try and use avocado for pudding and other desserts but haven’t yet! I must try it asap!
Oh my gosh, that lOoks absolutely delicious! I’ve heard of avocado in smoothies but not mousse!
I just made a version of this (with citrus) this past weekend! It was my first attempt at avocado pudding and it turned out amazing. I’m still shocked it could taste so much like real pudding when it’s made from avocados.
oh my gosh this looks fantastic! Thank goodness I need to go to the grocery store tomorrow this is going to be dessert!
yummmm, i recently made a chocolate mousse with silke tofu and my boyfriend loveddddd it ( i didn’t tell him there was tofu in it until after he ate it all. i will have to try the avocados next!
Did you think it was too rich at all? It looks really good, and now I’m curious…
there are very few things in life i feel are “too rich,” so i’m probably a bad person to ask! if you’re worried about that though, i would start with a small amount of cocoa powder and increase it gradually.
I make a chocolate milkshake….1/2 and avocado, 2T. of cocoa powder, 1/3 of a banana, splash of vanilla, 2 packets of stevia, almond milk, and a handful of ice cubes. I would rather have it over a DQ shake any day!
oh that sounds incredible!
I love this idea!! Who would have thought … avocado in a dessert?!
Ahh… I just posted the other day about my cravings for avocado lately… and now I see this. Clearly, my obsession isn’t going to end anytime soon!
I’ve seen a few recipes like this recently! So decadent and simple… must try!
The brownie batter comment sold me!
This looks amazing!!! I might have to trick my husband into trying it as well…. 😉
This might just satisfy my chocolate craving tonight! Thanks for the great idea Julie!!!!!!
You said the magic words = brownie batter.
Right now my Peanut M&M’s are satisfying my chocolate craving for tonight, but I’m going to have to save this one for another time!
this looks awesome! i’ve done something similar – with canned pumpkin- but i’ll bet the consistency of this is a lot smoother(better) and creamy! fun idea! thanks:)
I just saw avocados today and wasn’t sure what to do with it.. going back this week and NOW I KNOW!:) thanks!
Julie, this looks awesome 🙂 For the cocoa powder, can I just use raw cocoa powder, or is there a specific “dark chocolate” one? I hope this is not a dumb question! haha
Thanks 🙂
i used a dark chocolate one by hershey’s, but you can definitely use regular cocoa powder!
Avocados are one of the most amazing foods ever! Case in point – over the weekend, a Vita Mix man was doing a demonstration at Costco, and he made a pink lemonade sorbet out of grape juice, red cabbage, lemon, and avocado. It was delicious!
This looks delicious, Julie! Something I’m definitely going to make soon. 🙂
I am so making that. I happen to have 4 mind you 4 avocados ready to be eaten! e
Wow, that looks amazing!! Can’t wait to try it! 🙂
This is a creation I’ve been intrigued about for a while. I’ve seen both rave reviews and dear-god-never-make-this reviews! I’ve been hesitant because avocados are so expensive but…I think you may have swayed me! You’ve never steered me wrong before 🙂
Oh my, I’m afraid I would eat the whole thing if I made that. Especially if it really DOES taste like brownie batter. I’m not even that much into sweets, but there’s just something about brownie batter…
I have made this before.. and it is really amazing- somehow I always forget about making it when I have avocados around.. But now you have me thinking that I need to get some just to make this again 🙂
Looks amazing, Julie! So healthy and delicious. It really tastes like a decadent dessert!
There is a restaurant that I go to that serves chocolate mousse made with avocado and cashews. It is INSANE.
oooo ive made this before! it was SOO good!! i dont know why ive only made it the one time thanks for reminding me to make it more often!
Wow really!?!? I’ve seen recipes like that before but have always been too afraid to try them. I will def give it a go!
Oh, YES! I eat avocados pretty much every day, and I was just thinking, I wonder what dessert I could put them in? hehe 🙂
This looks so delicious! I need to go stock up on some avocados!
I’ve never heard of anything like this before! Do you eat it all by itself, or would you put it on top of a cake or brownie?
either! i ate it by itself!
wow! I can’t wait to try this! We eat guacamole probably three to four days a week around here. Usually just by itself. Choco-guac? count me in!
This sounds delicious! So could this count as a serving of vegetables? 🙂
OH MY GOD! Why wasn’t this posted BEFORE I went to the grocery store! 😉
If I didn’t know there was avocado in there, that would look SO good!! And while I love avocados, I don’t think I could stomach it knowing it’s in my chocolate. That’s really cool though!
Oh yeah. brownie batter CAN’T BE BAD! lol
OMG this looks delicious! I love avocados, and this would be a perfect healthy dessert! Thanks for sharing 🙂
I’ve been meaning to make this forever! I’m thinking a spoonful of pb added would do wonders 😉
Yumbo!! I would have never thought of this! I wonder if avage would work??
Such a cool recipe! I wonder if you could mix it up with other flavors?
Man, isn’t public radio the greatest? I work for Wisconsin Public Radio – gotta love it.
Love the blog, Julie. It’s always great to know there will be a new update when I check in. Keep me comin’ back!
