Tonight’s dinner came together in a flash thanks to some prep work this weekend. My mother in law’s boyfriend and I cooked up a batch of homemade chicken soup and all I had to do this evening was reheat it and add noodles to the broth.
Our noodles of choice?
Little baby noodle bits!
They make chicken noodle soup so much fun.
Ryan is actually quite a bit sniffly this evening, so I’m hoping this soup has the healing powers most chicken noodle soups seem to possess.
In case you’re in the market for an awesome chicken noodle soup recipe, I highly recommend my mom’s homemade chicken noodle soup. It’s happiness in a bowl.
Dead Ants = No Water
The rest of our evening was spent outside with Sadie.
While playing in the backyard, we turned on the hose to water some flowers and the water stopped. When we went inside all of the water in the house was off, too! This was bad news since I was fermenting and still hadn’t showered after this morning’s workout. (I’m disgusting, I know.)
After reading the packet of information about the home that the owner’s left us, we read that sometimes dead ants get into some circuit and cause the water to turn off. By the time we realized we might be able to fix the issue, it was dark outside, so Ryan grabbed his headlamp (he loves any excuse to use that thing) and we headed out back with an old tooth brush (as instructed!) and brushed the dead ants off the circuit.
When we came back inside and turned of the faucet, we had water again.
And I am now freshly showered, curled up on the couch ready to watch The Sing Off.
Bring on the a cappella!
Aw, I used to LOVE when my mom made us Campbell’s chicken and stars as a kid! This post brings back memories 🙂
chicken and stars!!! oh, memories.
Not showering after a morning workout is nothing. I have every other Friday off work, so after washing my hair post-workout on Thursday morning, I don’t bother to wash it again until Sunday night because there is always another workout 12 hours away.
Yeah I’m just that cool.
That soup looks great! 🙂 Glad you got your water back on!
i love those tiny noodles!! that soup looks so comforting and delish 🙂
Yum love chicken noodle soup! My mom makes the best chicken noodle soup I’ve ever had, this looks like it might be pretty close to it, and a perfect match up for when you are not feeling so hot. What a good wifey you are 🙂
I looooove The Sing Off!
Soup looks so yummy! I like that it’s getting colder out and I can make warm and hearty foods like that again.
That is quite possibly the weirdest home issue story I think I’ve ever heard! How bizarre.
Agreed – so strange!
oh i know. the packet of info. they left us is mind-boggling.
Haha that is the strangest home issue story I have ever heard! Glad you got it all cleared out!
That soup looks delicious! Reminds me of when I was a kid and ate chicken and stars!
I bet, never in your life were you so thankful for dead ants (and nothing else worse, right?)
Amen, dead ants.
My husband loves using his headlamp too! SO hilarious 🙂
I had no idea dead ants could do such a thing….thanks for the informative post!
wow. dead ants can do that?!?
i have a head lamp. i love wearing it for no reason, it cracks me up…yah…i’m weird. lol.
those little noodles are so cute!
you lucked out in the in-law department with all this delicious food 🙂
i’m spoiled. ryan’s grandma also used to own a restaurant. their food is unreal around the holidays!
Always trust in the healing powers of a good soup (especially when its made by somebody you’re sweet on!)
Oh man! Thank goodness it came back on! That would not have been fun!
That is the strangest thing I have ever heard, haha!
Definitely trying your Mom’s recipe and tiny noodles soon 🙂
On the Today show this morning, a doctor said that chicken noodle soup is effective in soothing and clearing colds! Just a random FYI 🙂
sweet!
oh man..I barely use the word “hate”, but the one time I use it is when I think of ants!! I reallly can’t stand them and I’m scared of them hahaha. Spiders? No problem. Ants? ahhh! B/c they invade every house I live in, in masses. Sorry rant over. 😛 And I would love to try your mom’s chicken noodle Julie! I bet it IS amazing.
Chicken noodle soup makes everything better 🙂
What a strange home issue, I’m glad you solved it so easily. And hey, we all ferment sometimes (like right now) so don’t feel bad about that.
I’m watching The Sing Off too! And dead ants…yuck..I probably would’ve freaked out, haha (I’m not dramatic or anything).
The ants thing is odd, good thing you got the water back!
Seriously, why does chicken noodle soup always seem to make you feel better?? And I probably would have freaked out if I had to brush out the ants…thank goodness you had your manly husband to do it for you 🙂
haha how funny about the ants. I have never heard of that before. Good to know though, might happen to us too someday. haha.
That’s a home issue I’ve never heard of! Kinda wish you had a picture of Ryan and his headlamp. 😉
i know! i should’ve taken one. but i assure you he’ll bust it out at the next HINT of a need for it and i’ll be ready!
At least you don’t have crazy ants! Have you heard about them?! They get into your electronics and completely fry them! I’ve been seeing them lately run around on my laptop and killing them every chance I get *eek*! Google them! It’s a serious matter!
Sometimes I take hours to shower after a workout too, it’s all good 🙂 That is so random (the dead ants). I would have never thought that it could cause that, yuck! Luckily it wasn’t hard to get back on. I love chicken noodle soup!
That’s so strange that dead ants can cause the power to go off! I’m glad the owners left a manual and you guys could fix it! Hopefully Sadie gets to play with the hose tomorrow! 😀
lol. Not showering until nighttime=story of my summer. Thank God I have to get ready for school these days. I might not have had any friends from fermenting so often! 😛
My roommate and I just watched The Sing Off! She knows three of the members in Pentatonix so it was cool to watch that.
That soup looks great! I love a thick soup but most are made so watery. Thicker the better is what I say.
Ants are nasty! It’s lucky the homeowners left that tip. Just another quirky thing when you live in the country!
How in the world did they figure out it was dead ants?! Oh dear. At least they left you with that gem of advice for getting the H20 back on 🙂
Completely unrelated to the post comment but I needed to share it. Julie, your no-look-first-look photos are on a Weddingbee post. 😀 this is the link: http://www.weddingbee.com/2011/09/26/no-look-first-look/#more-216258.
yay! thanks for sharing, selin!
so funny. my son has the sniffles too and I just blogged a recipe for chicken soup this morning. tis the season.
Soup looks delish! I am OBSESSED with the Sing Off! Watching it now {on West Coast time;o)}
Chicken soup really IS good for the soul 🙂
I hope Ryan starts to feel better soon. Did you know its actually the freshly ground pepper (and sometimes other spices) that’s added to the chicken noodle soup that helps you feel better and recover from a cold? The compound piperine in the black pepper acts as an antioxidant to the body but also helps to loosen secretions in the respiratory tract and it is also beneficial against bacterial growth particulary in the intestinal tract.*
So make sure you add some black pepper to the chicken noodle soup!!
*This is information that I remember getting from a college medicinal chemistry class that I took. You can also google Black Pepper medicinal uses and learn more about what scientists believe it can help.
awesome!!! thanks for the info!
Ah! I love the Sing Off! And my husband uses any excuse to use his head lamp too. Sometimes, he just wears it around the house at night!
I’ve never made chicken noodle soup from scratch. I will have to try it next time my husband or I catch a cold. It looks delicious!
Chicken soup definitely has healing power! Hope Ryan is feeling better 🙂
This reminds me of the time when I was growing up and the power went off. It turns out a squirrel had gotten electrocuted while running across the power line 🙁
whoa! that’s insane!
I went through rush, well sort of. I got dropped by my last house the second to last round, it felt great for my confidence. My three other roommates are going to bid night tommorow and I am happy for them, but I’m bummed I didn’t get picked by my top or any other. It’s weird because I felt when I was talking to them I had such a good connection, yet the house dropped me. I really don’t get the system of dropping people. I know you ares upposed to “fit” in the house, but I’m honestly a genuine, nice, caring person and it seems as if no one really cared about that. I would try talking to some girls who were rushing and they gave me the cold shoulder, yet they are going to be getting a house. I don’t understand as to what is so different from my roommates to me that made the house think I wouldn’t belong. I was looking forward to building great relationships and having fun with a group of girls because as a second year I feel as if I still don’t have that close group of friends but friends from various clubs. Sorry for the rant, but it just, well, sucked, to be dropped.
that is awful. 🙁 i’m so sorry! the good news is a LOT of houses have spring rush, so if you’re still interested, i’d definitely look into rushing in the spring. and honestly, you don’t want to be part of a group of people that don’t see YOU for YOU anyway. there are SO many other ways to build amazing friendships and great connections on campus. thinking of you!
Thanks. Tonight was bid night and 3 of my roomates are in the same sorority Chi O. THey already have things tommorow like pancake night, I would have loved to go to that! This weeekend there doing a bunch too and next weekend. I do have other clubs on campus but it’s a bummer that I got dropped. I was looking forward to having a close knit group of girls as friends and doing fun stuff on weekends. A lot of the club people hang out otuside of club events together but I just see most of them at club events. About 600 girls rushed for 7 sororites and my roomate’s sorority accepted 76 I think? I don’t think they have spring rush here, but I feel if they didn’t like me the first time why would they the second?
I am also guilty of working out in the morning and “fermenting” until evening :X haha..and I got a forehead bruise from wearing my headlamp fishing one night 🙁 I was crazy excited to use it, too!! But between the strange bruise and the light attracting a sh*t ton of bugs to swarm my face, I gave in and turned it off, although, I think mr. Headlight and I could be good friends..evening run perhaps?
What a gorgeous looking soup!
Chicken Soup is the BEST!!!! I made my mother make me some on Sunday after I had a rough go at it on the ferry ride home from Martha’s Vineyard. Perfect cure!!!
Love a good bowl of chicken soup!!! 😀
Never heard of dead ants getting in the way of water before…hahaha
I love any kind of soup, but this one looks amazing! I don’t care if it’s a hot summer day in south florida, I still love a warm brothy bowl of soup! mmmm- mmm -mmmm!
Those little noodles are so cute! I’ll definitely have to try this recipe.
Those are my favorite noodles to put in chicken noodle soup because they’re so tiny! Did you watch the sing-off though? My friend from high school was in the Deltones (last group to perform) and was the lead soloist. I cried! These shows kill me – Already obsessed with all the groups.
That soup looks delicious! I love the little noodles. 🙂
