You know that one exercise mantra I love? “You’re only one workout away from a good mood?”
Well, it proved true yet again this morning.
As Ryan and I walked to the gym, I told him I felt defeated. I really had no other words to describe how was feeling. For some reason I awoke feeling like I had my butt kicked mentally in my dreams last night. It was so weird!
Thankfully after 25 minutes of cardio spent on the elliptical while talking with Ryan, I felt my mood shift and began to feel more like myself.
As I headed into BodyPump, I noticed that the instructors gear wasn’t set up. After the whole class waited a good 10 minutes past the start time of the class, we figured she just wasn’t coming, which was a total bummer.
I collected my things and headed to the weight room, still determined to put myself through a quality strength-training workout.
My workout included three sets of 15 repetitions of the following exercises:
- Leg extensions
- Hamstring curls
- Leg extensions (Yes, I did these 2x because I didn’t feel like doing lunges)
- Deadlifts
- Side shoulder raises
- Bicep curls
- Tricep dips
- Front shoulder raises
- Tricep extensions
I didn’t feel like I rocked my body in the way that a BodyPump class does, but at least it was somethin’!
Breakfast
Once my workout was over and I finished taking Sadie for a quick walk, I showered and got to work in the kitchen.
After my short-lived hiatus thanks to yesterday’s peanut butter pancakes, smoothies returned in full-force this morning!
(Eye Spy: Can you spot Sadie?)
In the mix:
- 1 c. frozen strawberries
- 1/2 frozen banana
- 1 packet (or scoop) Gold Standard banana protein powder
- 1 handful fresh spinach
- 2 pinches xanthan gum
- 1 1/4 c. milk
Enjoyed in a bowl with a spoon!
What You May Have Missed
Fall off the face of the internet earth this weekend? Here’s what you may have missed on PBF:
- Ryan and I attended a black tie event and got all gussied up
- We learned that working out too hard can make your head fall off…
- And that Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen are the jam

I completely agree with that mantra! I only wish i’d made myself go yesterday! I DID make myself go this a.m. and, like you, my class was canceled! However, I tried to make the best of it and did combo/spin running but like you said it wasn’t quite the same – boo. Happy Monday!
Tessa @ Amazing Asset says
That mantra has helped me on a number of occasions! And good for you for still doing a strength training workout 🙂
That’s quite annoying when the instructor doesn’t show up and there’s no substitute… can’t waste precious time in the morning before work/class!
gabriella @ embracement says
My favorite is “you’ll never regret a workout”. Even if I don’t want to go I can’t say I’ve ever left and thought “well gee I shouldn’t have done something good for myself today”.
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Yumm the smoothie looks great! I had a similar one this morning after my spin class and it was so refreshing! PS. Loved your dress from the Excellence Awards this weekend!
Hope says
That smoothie looks very tasty! I love Sadie in the background! She looks comfy! Happy Monday! 🙂

There are definitely days when I feel like I “cannot” workout but then it totally makes me day and improves my mood. I think that is when our minds are playing tricks on us — not funny!
Too bad about the instructor, but hopefully they are ok, who knows what could have happened!
Lisa @ I'm an Okie says
That dog looks just like Eddie :).

So glad you’re feeling better after your workout!!! 😀
That smoothie in a bowl looks delish!
Tanya says
Your smoothies look soo good! There’s just one thing: I don’t have a blender here at school! It’s killing me!

I used this mantra today as well!! I got up, completely not wanting to go to the gym, but I thought of you and this mantra, said it to myself a couple of times, and walked out the door. And it totally worked, I am sooo glad that I didn’t crawl back into bed! 🙂
kristy @ kristyruns says
I’m on a breakfast smoothie bowl kick lately too. They’re just packed with so much tasty goodness!
Jamie aka "Sometimes Healthy" Girl says
Totally relate to sometimes waking up feeling a little defeated and not wanting to go to the gym, especially on Mondays. Good for you for powering through!
Natalie @ ittleedibles says
I have so much smoothie bowl envy of you, all the time! We want a Vitamix so bad!
The best encouragement I give myself is something you said a few days ago – get out and do it and appreciate it, because there are a lot of people out there who can’t at all.
We are having a nasty, rainy day here so I’m loading up my iPod and insisting upon a joyful workout with child-like enthusiasm… 🙂
Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food says
so glad your workout boosted your mood it definitely does the same for me! 🙂
Kelly says
I woke up this morning feeling like I am getting sick! GAG! But I did some lighter cardio on the bike and elliptical and I feel a little better! Good for you for not giving up and still working out even though your body pump instructor didn’t show! 🙂
Rachel @ The Avid Appetite says
I hate starting out Monday that way! I did a 6 mile walk for MS yesterday, so my husband and I were both asleep by 9pm. Talk about feeling refreshed this morning!
Hannah says
Feel the exact same way.. my theory is to get to the gym, which is the hardest part of a work out. Once you are there, you won’t want to leave with out a good work out. I accidently set my alarm for P.M. this morning instead of A.M but somehow i still woke up! Glad I did! Feeling soo good now that I got it done!

Lately I have been trying the workouts from midwestfit.com
I have always been intimidated by bodyrock, but midwestfit kicks your butt too!

good job getting in your own weights without the class! Your smoothie bfast looks delish as always…I love when there’s a glimpse of your wedding ring on the picture! So pretty and sparkly 🙂

Glad to hear that you’ve perked up! I hate those mornings when you wake up with the blues. Definitely not fun.

Such a bummer when your instructor doesn’t show! Thanks for mentioning the PB pancakes, I missed them yesterday!
Melissa says
I’ve been feeling a little defeated the last day or two, too. I’m hoping a good long run this afternoon will help me sort it out. It surely can’t hurt! 😀
Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries says
I use that mantra all the time! It’s absolutely true 🙂
Andreea @ Journey To USA says
I’m doing the gym thing in my house with a pair of dumbells, a jumpe rope, weights wrists and a static bycicle.
For someone who is into fitness for a year only, I guess it’s good enough for now.
However, beeing my own instructor has ups and downs. My main purpose is to move. So, if I don;t feel like doing cardio, I do at least some squats or an easier interval training.
I balanced it by being more active in the rest of the day, taking the stairs and walking one more mile .
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
That’s so annoying about the BP teacher!! Maybe she just overslept 😉 I have so much respect for early AM teachers, since I generally use my workout to wake up…and they have to be perky already!

Sadie is on the couch! I bet after that pic was taken she ended up right by your side, tho!
And girl, i felt totally defeated yesterday… COMPLETELY! (actually all of last week was kind of hard). No fun. But today I am feeling much better. It’s okay to have off days (or weeks)…we’re human!
Robyn says
Similar situation today! I got to my gym (teeny tiny fitness center in my neighborhood) and the treadmill was broken! BOO! I think they must have had some sort of power fuse issue (my really technical assessment of the situation) because none of the cardio machines worked. I took my run outside, which I hate at 5 am because the dark scares me! But, I braved up and did it! I tried to tell myself that it would be worth it and it totally was!
Amber K says
I’m glad the workout made you feel better! I hate it when I’m in a funk and can’t even figure out why.
khushboo says
That’s my utmost favorite mantra! Those endorphins have never failed me! On days where I’m not feeling it, I always tell myself that I can go as low-intensity as I want as long as I do something. Majority of the time, the high kicks in and it ends up being an awesome session!

Hahah Sadie definitely wants your smoothie!
I definitely got my butt kicked in my sleep last night too. I woke up feeling like I got hit my a mac truck! WHAT is the deal?
Heather says
Working out definitely boosts my mood! I am not sure how I would have made it through last week without the gym!
natalie says
I seriously need to get on this smoothie train! It’s still super cold and yucky here, maybe once the weather starts to get warmer they’ll appeal to me a little more.
Sorry you had a bad night – I get those too, usually when too much ‘crud’ is on my mind. Hope you rest well tonight!

I hate when I don’t wake up well rested! I hope the rest of your day goes well! 🙂
I spied Sadie on the couch on a blanket or towel of some sort! 🙂

I love how motivated you are to always work out. I’m glad it lifted your mood!

I hate that feeling of being defeated and having no energy or enthusiasm to bring to your workout. Usually once I get going I’m able to build up a lil’ energy and can get through it but its definitely a struggle sometimes. Good for you for sticking with it 🙂

I hate waking up from exhausting dreams!! Me and the husband felt like that this morning- boo! Luckily I got to go teach a BodyPUMP class and I was feelin’ fine afterwards!!

Whenever I feel like I just can’t make it to the gym, I think “what ELSE am I going to be doing”. As soon as I finish my workout I’m so glad that I went!

I felt the same way as soon as I woke up this morning. Not a fun way to wake up for sure, but after a great workout I felt tons better! It is amazing what a great workout can do for the soul!
Hats @ See How She Runs says
I always feel so much better after I’ve exercised. It helps clear my mind.
Sucks that you didn’t get to do BodyPump! I don’t feel like I get the same workout if I’m by myself either – I much prefer instructor-led classes to really push myself. Now that I’ve bought a strength-training book, I’m hoping to work on my discipline so I can workout at home when I can’t get to the gym (Bank Holidays, bad weather, etc).
