Big yawn!
Who else slept in on this lovely Sunday?
Ryan, Sadie and I remained tucked into bed until 7:30 a.m. and it felt great! (My college self is dying a little bit inside now that I consider sleeping past 7 a.m. “sleeping in.”)
Breakfast
After we awoke, we were anxious to get out on the hiking trails before the sun warmed everything up too much, so we enjoyed super-fast breakfasts in the form of smoothies.
I am seriously loving my banana “ice cream” smoothie lately.
Today I added one cup of strawberry banana Greek yogurt to the original recipe since I wanted the smoothie to have even more staying power and it was fantastic!
It’s all about using two frozen bananas. Ya can’t beat the creaminess!
Hiking
With smoothies in our bellies, we drove out to the nearby hiking trails and set out to complete a three-mile loop.
We were clearly the first ones on the trails because we kept getting nailed with fresh spider webs as we walked.
Eventually we took to pawing our way through the forest and karate-chopping the air in front of us where we suspected the webs might be.
And we say Sadie is the crazy one.
Once we were done with our hike, we headed home, grabbed a snack and quickly changed to make it to an 11 a.m. church service.
We made it there with two minutes to spare!
Lunch
After church, it was lunchtime and when Ryan suggested stopping by Firehouse Subs, I was in!
Though I was excited for the subs, I was more excited to once again try their 100-flavor coke machine.
I don’t drink a lot of soda, but when I do, I enjoy every bubbly sip!
Today I got a combination of vanilla Sprite zero and Barq’s diet vanilla root beer.
For my sub, I opted for the Firehouse Hero with all the veggies and no mayo. The sub was stacked with roast beef, smoked turkey breast, honey ham and melted provolone cheese and was nice and toasty!
Ryan and I also shared a bag of Sun Chips.
Now we’re back at home where we hope to spend the rest of the day doing stuff around the house. Ryan is also trying to convince me to watch the latest Star Trek movie that he DVRed a few weeks ago. He said he was never a Star Trek fan growing up, but thought the movie was really good. He also assured me that there’s some kind of a love story in there somewhere, so we’ll see…
Bonnie @ pastepants says
I love that tiny braid in your hair! =) And that pic of Sadie is just the cutest!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Hahaha, I hate walking into a spider web unexpectedly! Have a great Sunday!
peanutbutterfingers says
we looked like we were convulsing out there. it was crazy how many we ran into on our hike!
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
My boyfriend is always trying to get me to watch star trek – good luck!
Olivia says
Star Trek is great – I’m a huge fan. My boyfriend got me into it two years ago and now I love it just as much as he does. That new movie is my favourite movie.
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
I love Fire House subs! Haven’t had it in so long.. it is pricey but SO worth it!
Alyssa @ fit and fun in third says
Hahah that first picture of Sadie just cracked me up! Sounds like a great little Sunday! 🙂
Mallory @ Have Your Cake says
your hair looks adorable like that! very “hippie chic” !!
Coco says
Haha.. I love that picture of Sadie! I only wish I could have slept in and went for a hike today instead of working :/ That sounds like an interesting combo.. I imagine it tasting like a root beer float..
Aimee says
The Star Trek movie is soo good! Even if you aren’t a huge fan of the movie, I can assure you that Captain Kirk (aka Chris Pine) is excellent eye candy. 😉
Hillary Peach says
Hi Julie, I love you blog!
Just wondering have you ever considered buying an e-reader? (I saw your earlier post about a trip to the bookstore) I didn’t ever think I would be a convert but now that I have one, I love it! And I just thought it might be something you would too, as you guys seems to read so much!
peanutbutterfingers says
i have! my mom has one and loooves it… but i still have a hard time getting over the fact that i wouldn’t be holding a book! there’s something i love about holding a book and all that… i know it sounds silly. i’m sure i’d love an e-reader b/c i’ve heard such great things!
Amber K says
I am the same way! I love actually holding a book in my hands. I actually have a Kindle Fire, but I never read on it, lol. I mostly use it to watch Netflix when I’m in the kitchen and to go on the Internet when I’m away from my computer.
Sana says
Ahhh, spider webs give me the heebie jeebies! P.s your hair looks super pretty 🙂
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
Oh no, I hate walking into spider webs! I definitely would have sent Ryan in front of me to clear them out, haha 🙂 I’m so impressed that you were able to complete a 3-mile hike before church – way to go! Ooh, I love root beer and Sun Chips – sounds tasty 🙂 Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Love your hair!! I gotta add more braids in–it looks so much fancier than the work put in, ya know?! LOVE it.
That soda thing sounds cool–i too drink it like 4x/year, but when I do, it is a fun occasion!
Jamie says
Pretty picture of you!
Mollie says
I went for a 3 week hike in Cali this summer with my little brother (craziest, most out of my element, BEST thing I have ever done in my life.) Oh man, am I all too familiar with those early morning spider webs. I had a good laugh reading about your experience, I know the karate chop move-great technique haha!!
tara says
Do you use a spoon for all your smoothies?
I’ve seen some people use straws, but I’ve heard straws can give a person gas?
Have you ever put oats and peanut butter in your smoothie?
peanutbutterfingers says
it totally depends on how thick they are! i use straws a lot actually! i LOVE peanut butter in smoothies and add it quite often. so good!
Aylin @ Glow Kitchen says
I’m envious that sleeping in is 7:30 for you — sleeping for me is earliest 10am!
Lina says
Haha, sounds like he really wants to see the Star Trek movie and that you might have to use a lot of imagination for it to be a romantic movie.
That said, question: The frozen bananas, do you freeze them with or without the skin?
peanutbutterfingers says
definitely without!
Jodi @ I Run for Food and Wine says
Those machines are popping up everywhere now! love them!
Kristy says
What brand of protein powder do you use?
peanutbutterfingers says
usually i use optimum nutrition gold standard 100% whey
Serena says
Man I miss firehouse Subs. Haven’t had one since we left South Carolina in 2008. Sad.
Sara says
The Star Trek movie is really good! Fast paced and actually pretty funny.
Tiffany says
Vanilla sprite zero and diet barqs vanilla root beer!?!?!? You have me doing cartwheels over here. I’ve never heard of such fantasticalness!?! The vanilla still makes it sugar free?
Btw. Cute braid
Eva @TheHealthyParty says
WOWW that smoothie looks so good! Such a simple recipe too, I’m gonna try it. yummm
Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More says
Think I might try that smoothie recipe tomorrow!
Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed says
I HATE spider webs. Walking into them is THE WORST!
Tina says
I have never been to Firehouse Subs, but I am craving a trip now! And I have to side with Ryan – that movie is really good, and I am far from a Trekkie!
Caitlin says
He Julie, do you buy the whey protein vanilla flavor or the vanilla ice cream flavor?
peanutbutterfingers says
vanilla whey 🙂
Lauren says
I always find my smoothies taste a million times better with an entire banana. I can only imagine how good it must be with 2. BTW, your hair is so cute!
Sarah says
For some reason whenever I see a sub from Firehouse on your blog I want one. I don’t even like subway or quiznos but we moved right next to a Firehouse six months ago.
As for the Star Trek movie I’d give it two thumbs up, and I’m not even a Star Trek fan.
Sharan {College Girl Eats} says
I tried your ice cream smoothie recently and I have to say that it definitely lived up to your hype! Ever since then I can’t use anything less than 1.5 bananas in a smoothie. It gives it the perfect consistency. 🙂
And while I’m actually not a soda drinker (too sweet for me) I really want to try that 100-flavour soda machine! Haha!
peanutbutterfingers says
doesn’t it make such a big difference!? LOVE extra banana!
mel says
you look so cute! I’m drooling over your smoothie…my blender(s) – yes I broke two!!- have been broken for two weeks and I’m dying inside!! I broke the driver clutch (what?) and I’m going to break down and buy another blender bc I can’t fix it! frustrating!
Lauren @ Fun, Fit and Fabulous! says
Sadie is too funny!! Your smoothie sounds delicious. I think I just found my breakfast for tomorrow! I hope you had a wonderful rest of your Sunday!
Laura @ First Class Great Outdoors says
Did you watch the Star Trek movie? Honestly, I have never watched any form of Star Trek, but my husband got hooked into this newer movie a few weeks back when it was on FX. We both really liked it. Totally not my usual thing.
peanutbutterfingers says
we did – it had a little too much action for me so i got a little bored, but it was better than i anticipated. 🙂 and i think that when it was on FX is when ryan DVRed it!!
Kristin says
what a fun day!!! I love ur blog so much!! 🙂 Even more than I love Firehouse Subs! lol 🙂
Sarah says
My fiancee and I do yoga together sunday. Love the cute sunday couples traditions!
peanutbutterfingers says
i love this!!!!! so cute!
Lindsay says
Ice cream smoothie looks fantastic Julie! I’ll have to try one when I’m in sunny south Florida next week for spring break! Not to say Wisconsin weather has ever stopped me from enjoying anything ice cream related before.
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
I’ve been OBSESSED with those smoothies lately!
Dee says
I am definitely not a trekki, but loved the movie!! You will fall in love with young spock! 🙂
Lisa says
Sadie is the cutest! I hate walking into spider webs and you have to do the whole karate chop movement, I can say it’s more awkward if your alone and lots of cars are driving past you…because to them you look like a weirdo trying to fight off invisible ninjas…quite an odd site 😉
Khushboo Thadani says
I have always avoided Star Wars but after being surprised at how much I enjoyed Hunger Games, I will never put my nose up at a movie/book without giving it a chance!
Christine @ Oatmeal in my Bowl says
I just love that soda machine. They had one at the theater I was at this weekend when I went to see Hunger Games. And I wanted to mix all the flavors. Unfortunately, I was filling my son’s soda. I had water. Should have indulged. 😉
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I love your hair! It looks so pretty! 🙂 That soda machine sounds awesome! I hope we get one of those near me sometime soon!
Emily N says
I think you have posted about the 100 flavor coke machine before right? And I am pretty sure that I said I need to get to firehouse subs and try it…
Yeah, still haven’t. And it is probably 2 blocks (suburb blocks – so NOTHING) from my house!
So I WILL. And SOON!
Ruthie Hart says
I love that you guys hike so much 🙂 we are closing on a house next week that is in a neighborhood with lots of trails and I am excited to check them out!
Anna says
I love a good weekend hike with the hub!
And I am seriously LOVING your braid! Perfect warm weather hair!! 🙂
Life's a Bowl says
A super soda machine sounds awesome! I need to find one in the DC area…
