The day before traveling is always jam packed, isn’t it? Tomorrow I am heading to Boston where I’ll be through Friday when I head to Connecticut for the weekend. Lots of fun stuff awaits, including a visit to the Reebok headquarters, and I cannot wait!
I feel like I’ve been productive on the work-front today, but I haven’t done anything to get ready for tomorrow’s travels. Perhaps my bag will pack itself?
I’ve also been trying to get Sadie an appointment at the vet.
She awoke this morning with some yellowish-greenish discharge coming out of both of her eyes which obviously concerned me. (You come for pictures of food and I make you read about discharge. Yeehaw!)
I turned to Dr. Google and everything I read about Sadie’s symptoms convinced me that her head may explode at any minute, allowing snake-like strands of bacteria to escape and worm their way all over our house. Guys, diagnosing your pets’ condition using the internet works.
Our vet’s office is conducting employee training until 3 p.m. today, so I’m hoping we can sneak her in before they close this evening. Eye goop be gone!
Lunch
I’m pretty sure there’s no graceful way to transition from talking about eye goop to lunch, so let’s just dive in.
I made myself chicken salad with celery, white corn and carrots and ate it with a giant Honeycrisp apple on the side.
It was cold and delicious. The weather in Ocala is rather gloomy today, so a bright, crisp lunch appealed to me. This one did the trick!

That salad looks great! Although I don’t have a dog, I can say WebMD is a scary site for me. I look up something very simple but it always comes back as cancer! Always! I just don’t go there anymore =)
Ashleigh @ Steppin it up Step Moms says
Amanda i completely agree! Whenever I’ve looked up symptoms for things I just end up getting scared and get the idea that I have leukemia or something and it ends up being the flu… Technology is awesome but it is also a scary thing!
Kaylie says
I love checking out symptoms on the Internet- I come up with the craziest finds. Safe travels!
Sarah says
Susan our GSP had the same problem earlier this fall. Turns out it was just allergies and now that it is much colder here in MN it has pretty much taken care of itself. All the vet prescribed were eye drops to be given twice a day due to a bit of inflammation. Nothing to worry about.
Alexa @ Southern Living, Our Way says
Dr. Google always freaks me out and convinces me that every ache and pain is fatal! I had to stop looking stuff up online, too. Poor Sadie’s eyes sound like conjunctivitis, just like we humans get. Hopefully not, because when my dog had that, you can imagine what fun week it was in our house trying to put eyedrops in the her gunky eyes! Good luck to y’all getting a diagnosis! 🙂
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
Self diagnosing or pet diagnosing is always interesting! I hope Miss Sadie’s eyes get cleared up!
Rachel says
I’m alwayssss diagnosing myself on Dr. Google.. my Mom yells at me haha
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
oh my goodness, google is so dangerous! Haha I think I’ve become a hypochondirac because of google and WebMD!
Morgan says
Julie-when my dog had that it turned out to just be allergies. So don’t panic!
peanutbutterfingers says
thanks, morgan! when i read about the discharge, i read about the possibility of it being allergies, but i grew more concerned when it talked about the discharge having an odor. unfortunately sadie’s does have a slight odor, which makes me think it might be bacterial. we shall see! i’m hoping it’s easy to treat!
Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction says
You will be coming to my neck of the woods!!! The Reebock Headquarters is amazing!! Whatever you are doing there will surely be fun…crossfit related??
I hope Sadie’s eye goop is gone soon! I’m sure her head will not explode!
katie says
I hope Sadie feels better soon!
Yay for a fun trip ahead for you, enjoy it! I am sure whatever it is, will be a fun weekend for sure!
Sherri says
You’re coming to CT!? Mind if I ask where/whether you’re doing any meet-ups? Would love to meet with you to pick your brain about some freelance/volunteering stuff!
Haley @ The Saucy Apple says
Brrrr… I get the shivers just thinking about eating cold chicken salad on a winter day. BUT on a toasted open-faced sandwich with cheese melted on top? Yes, please! 😛
I hope Sadie’s eyes get better, poor thing. Lucy seems to get that whenever the seasons change around here, and it goes away within a few days… so hopefully it’s just allergies!
Natalie @ Free Range Human says
Sounds like a fun trip! Have a safe flight! Poor Sadie…it’s frightening when a pet is sick. They can’t tell you what’s wrong!
Leigh says
My dog had a similar issue a few months ago… but just in one eye. It turned out to be pink eye. Wrangling a 2 year old lab mix to try to put stuff in his eye was not easy, but it cleared up no problem.
Hopefully Sadie’s eye gunk is easy to take care of!
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
Oh no! I hope Sadie feels better! I always turn to WebMD to look up symptoms and I tell myself I’m not going to do it and I do it anyway. Best of luck at the vet!
That chicken salad looks yummy!
Jennifer says
I love talking about discharge then food. Hope the pup feels better.
Michelle says
Safe travels! Super jealous of course, you’ll have a blast I’m sure! I hope Sadie’s ok! Love your links – checking out november superfoods!
Leslie @ Body Won't Break says
I always convince myself our dogs are super sick. My husband always laughs at me and tells me not to worry. I thought one of our dogs broke her leg but it was just a sprain. He wouldn’t let me take her to the vet, so we let it rest, massaged it, gave her buffered asprin and she was all better.
Hope Sadie feels 100% soon!
Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots says
hope it isnt too serious!! Where in Connecticut? I live there! Hope you have fun plans while you are here!
Annette@FitnessPerks says
YAY for travels! I leave Friday on a plane too! wahoo!
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
When I really think about it, I probably visit Google’s website at least 10 times a day. It is hard to believe we used to live without it…oh, the simple days!
Liz @ IHeartVegetables says
Yummm I love honeycrisp apples! I wish they weren’t so expensive! 🙂
Ashleigh says
I had a black lab that had the same problem! And it was allergies.. Also your lunch looks amazing! 🙂
Danielle @ Itsaharleyyylife says
have a great time in Boston… the reebok event sounds awesome!
Julianne @ Juju Eat Cake says
My Sadie just had the same problem about a month ago. Within a week her eyes were back to normal. I think it was just allergies.
Christine says
Get well Sadie! My company is right near the Reebok Headquarters! A few times a year they offer us a discount and we get to shop in their store! It’s a really fun place, enjoy! And bring warm clothes, it’s cold up here! bbbrrrr….
Stefanie @ Thin Vegetarian says
Have a great time at Reebok Headquarters. Hope Sadie is fine! I am so loving those honeycrisp apples right now too.
Jen says
Poor Miss Sadie…. hope its an easy fix….
Have a safe trip to Boston, I’m about an hr north….dress warm!!! It’s cold up here…
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
Ugh, my dogs eyes are perpetually goopy! I’ve taken him to the vet several times and they can’t seem to figure out exactly what it is; I’m pretty sure it’s allergies though! Curious to hear what they tell you!
Brittany Peters says
Aww poor Sadie! I agree with the webmd thing though. Last week I was sick and it was giving me the worst possible sicknesses. It’s scary to read that stuff!
Jade says
I am impressed that Dr. Google is a vet as well as my new physical therapist. Dr. Google just has the best rates, you can’t resist.
Samantha says
Hope Sadie feels and gets better soon! So exciting that you are coming to New England and especially Connecticut, enjoy and safe travels!
Karey @ Nutty About Health says
Eye goop aside, your lunch still looked tasty. 😉 I really hope you were able to get Sadie into the vet later… I know how it sucks to worry about your pet. I also HATE packing… if only there were an easier way… Have a great trip!
Kim says
Good story about awkward transitions…I teach a physiology class, and this week we are doing the reproductive system. When switching from the male anatomy to the female, I was like “Ok, let’s dive into the female anatomy now!” Uhhh…whoops! 🙂
But switching from eye goop to lunch…no good way! Have fun travelling and be safe! 🙂
Amber Haskett says
Hi Julie,
Love your blog, and I have been trying to keep up with reading while working full time and attending graduate school 🙂 I am trying to sneak some ideas about how to keep a healthy lifestyle while being so busy! I am trying my best!
PS. you better pack warm clothes!! I live in Boston and it is freezing, so bring your boots and sweaters! Enjoy your trip!
Meredith says
Have a great time in Boston! If you have time, try to go to Fanuiel Hall at nightime to see all of the trees lit up. It was one of my favorite parts about living there during the holidays!
Christine says
The word “discharge” grosses me out! Ha Ha!
Khushboo says
I’m guilty of consulting Dr. Google far too often 😉
Bek @ Crave says
Lets just say I’m glad I ate lunch already haha! I couldn’t look at your slaw salad for too long before thinking about the resemblance to the goop- possibly? Haha
Jessica says
Hope you have a wonderful time in Connecticut — it is FREEZING here today!!! Doing anything fun while you’re in town?!?
Tanya says
I took my vizsla puppy to the vet today and she had gunk in her eyes as well. He told me she had pink eye, and that it was commen this time of year (I live in Alabama).
