After spending a little more than a week away from the gym, it felt good to be back today! There’s something about the gym atmosphere that motivates me and I like my morning routine.
What I do not like is when Ryan sets the alarm for 4:45 a.m. without telling me. 5 a.m. is the time we agreed on. I can wrap my head around waking up at 5 a.m., but there is something horrific about waking up in the four o’clock hour.
Brutal!
(Source)
Fortunately for Ryan, I didn’t realize that he set the alarm for 4:45 a.m. until we were walking out the door and I glanced at the clock. Some words were exchanged, I’ll just tell you that.
Once we arrived at the gym, I was tempted to hit the weights, but knew my muscles needed a break after yesterday’s living room workout, so I hopped on the elliptical and did my 50 minute elliptical interval workout instead. Sweaty!
Breakfast
We’re running very low on food right now but are trying to make it through Sunday without stopping by the grocery store, so today’s breakfast included the food we had on hand.
Eggs + Shredded cheese + Onion + Broccoli
And a banana on the side!
Question of the Morning
- What time do you wake up?
- How early is “horrifically early” for you in the morning?
I wake up at 5 a.m. most weekdays and trrry to sleep in on the weekends, though I am usually awake by 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Horrifically early for me is anytime before 5 a.m. on weekdays and anytime before 6 a.m. on weekends. Ick!
Jenica says
I normally wake up at 5:30, but the past few weeks I’ve been sleeping in until 7! It’s been heavenly and feel so indulgent. I would say anything before 4:30 strikes me as psychotic/still the middle of the night.
Samantha says
I usually sleep until 7 on the weekdays and about 8 on the weekends. I am soo not a morning person, so anything in the 6:00 hour is tough! And anything before that, watch out- I will probably be grumpy for awhile! : )
Joelle (On a Pink Typewriter) says
Haha that tumblr post!
I’m up at 6:30am and sometimes fifteen minutes earlier depending on what workout I’m doing or if I have to be at work earlier. I want to train myself to get up earlier so ill have more time before work though, but it’s tough– I got out of the habit this summer!
Julie @ Sweetly Balanced says
I normally wake up at 5:15am and try to be out the door by 5:30am… But I agree anytime before 5am is horrific!! My fiance wakes up at 4:45 go get ready for work and he LOVES coming in to wake me up around 5am… UM HELLO!! I have 15 mins left of sleep!! I’d like to keep that 15 mins please!!
Michelle @ Eat Move Balance says
Believe it or not, I wake up at 4:00 am every week day. I have to leave for work by 6:30 am, so I get up early enough to workout beforehand. I’m totally a morning person, so it’s okay! On the weekends, I sleep in until 5:00 or 5:30. 🙂
Parita says
4 am?! WOW! What time do you try to be in bed?
Michelle @ Eat Move Balance says
9:00 at the latest! I know–kinda dorky. On a Saturday, I’ll stay up later though, if something fun is going on or we go out with friends. 🙂
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
i went to bed at 9 p.m. last night, too. 🙂 i was reading and couldn’t keep my eyes open. i’ll be dorky with ya!
Kelly (Mikulecky) Woodland says
I am a 4:00am wake-up gal too! I have to be at work by 6:00am so I am in the same boat as you with the extra early wake-ups. I also usually go to bed at 9pm. I never thought I would meet another person with my schedule!
Elaine says
Oh my gosh I think 5am is bad enough-I can’t imagine 4am!! If I am awake before 6am, I will be the biggest grouch. I warn everyone to stay away until the sun is up and I’ve had at least one cup of coffee. Major props to you for waking up that early all of the time!
Parita says
I normally wake up around 5:15 on the weekdays and much later on the weekends – when I make up for lost sleep. It’s funny how the concept of sleep, sleeping in, using time wisely has changed so much for me the past few years. I remember when sleeping in was the best thing ever, and now I (sometimes) think of it as lost time.
Anele @ Success Along the Weigh says
Oh yeah, I’d exchange some words as well. The 4 hour should not even be considered unless you’re catching a plane somewhere!
I get up at 6:50am after the Mr is done. I really wish I could sleep past 7:30am on the weekends. I don’t get to bed until 12-12:30am and I feel like I should get more sleep but my body says, “not gonna happen lady!”
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
yes! 4 a.m. is a time i associate with early-morning travel, not my workouts. 🙂
Amy says
I get up at 6:15am most days but 5:45am on Fridays. I do 30 min workout in the morning mon-thur and 30-hr after work those days. On Friday i like to get a full 60 min in before work so i get up at 5:45am! Then after work friday i am really free and don’t have a workout. On Saturdays i do my long runs so i get up at 6:50am and then sunday i normally sleep in which usually means 9 at the latest. Anything before 5am seems way too early! I could do 5:30 am’s if i really wanted to…lol But i need my 8-9 hrs of sleep and don’t want to go to bed any earlier than 9pm!
I love working out first thing in the am. I would like to eventually get to doing my full 60 min in the morning! With some bonus work outs here and there like biking after work with my hubby. He works shift work so our schedules arent the same at all! I get woken up between 11pm and 2am every night when he comes to bed:( Only other alternative is separate beds and thats not an option:p
Amanda @ Veggiesndogs says
OMG that is soo funny and soo true! Up until last week my husband would set his alarm for 6am and it would go off, but he would just hit snooze 4 times until 6:30! That morning I had glorious plans to sleep until 7am, which clearly did not happen. Let’s just say he knows better than to keep hitting the snooze button for thirty minutes 🙂
Ali @ WHOLEistically Fit says
Haha, I can so relate to this! Except, I’ve got to admit, I’m the snooze button hitter in our household. My poor husband… I think I need to find a vibrating alarm watch or something like that. If there’s snugglies, there’s got to be something out there in the market like that :).
Jenni says
I’m a teacher and live about 30 miles away from where I teach. I get up at 5:15 for work and that’s just so I can get showered, dressed and hopefully eat breakfast before getting to school. I usually work out after school (though the last couple weeks have been FULL of meetings and such, that I haven’t worked out…)On the weekends, I usually wake up naturally around 6:30-7:00, wide awake.
Beckett @ The Birchwood Pie Project says
The alarm goes off at 5:55 on weekdays so that I can be downstairs and brewing coffee by the time NPR starts at 6. Then I get in a circuit workout on MWF, clean the house on Thurs, and get back in bed with a magazine on Tues! I don’t set an alarm on weekends, but usually wake up at sunrise.
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
oooh an NPR fan! do you like wait, wait don’t tell me? it’s my fav!
Becka @ simplybecka says
I agree with you anything before 5am is just too early. Feels like another time zone. On the weekends I try to sleep in. I wish I could do my hair the night before but it never works out that way. LOL Then I could sleep in more. I have been horrible at hitting the snooze button lately. Alarm at 5am wake up after like 3-4 snooze sessions. Oh how bad of me. Have a great day. ^_^
Jana @ Newly Wife Healthy Life says
During the week I either get up at 5 if I am working out, or 6:15 if I am not. Weekends I am usually up by 7 or 7:30. Anything after 8 am is sleeping inane rare! My body is just used to its natural clock at this point.
Angela says
My husband annoyingly wakes me up at 5:45, 15 minutes before I have to get up. Why must he torture me?
If I had to get up at 5 am, that would be the death of me. : ) Your trip looked like fun. I’ve always wanted to visit that part of the country.
Dianna says
I work nights, so if someone wakes me up before like 3pm- it’s on.
Meghan @ After the Ivy League says
I draw a hard line at the 5:30 mark…any earlier than that will not work for me. Sometimes I’ll get ambitious and try to wake up at 5:15, but it never works. I try to sleep in on the weekends too, but there’s usually no way I can sleep past 8:00.Usually I’ll get up, get some stuff done, and go back to sleep! Those are the best Saturdays.
Lindsey says
6am during the week and 6:30-7am on weekends. Too early for me is before 5:30am during the week and before 6:30am on the weekends!
Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction says
Today is the first morning that I woke up at 5:15 and go to the gym at 5:30. I was SO tired. But with my new office job, its even HARDER for me to go to the gym after work. It feels SO good to be done with my workout, but it was TOUGH getting up that early …I took a spinning class, so it was good because the instructor was motivating…I’m not sure I’ll be ablke to motivate myself first thing in the morning, that early! I say anything before 5:30 is brutally early!!!
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
i agree! it’s much harder for me to motivate myself to workout in the afternoon/evening than it is for me to haul my butt out of bed in the morning.
Natalie says
I just started a sorority boot camp this week which requires a 5:30 am wake up call. I’m shocked that I’ve been able to do it, but I am loving it. Feels so much better to be done with a workout by 7 am.
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
boot camp workouts are awesome! my old gym has a boot camp class that i loved on friday mornings. i miss it!
Hillary says
On weekdays, I wake up at 5:48 (yes, 5:48—not 5:50). Waking up anytime before 5 am is a criminal act in my opinion! On the weekends, I usually let myself “sleep in” which is usually until 7:45 or 8!
Liz @ IHeartVegetables says
Hahaha it’s SO true, just a few minutes before my alarm, and I’m like WHY am I up right now?!
Early for me is like 6:30 haha. It’s funny how it’s all relative!
Sloane @ Life Food and Beer says
I wake up at 8 everyday, no matter what time I went to sleep. I usually lay in bed and read for 30 min. to an 1 hour. I do not concerned myself a morning person. I wish I had the motivation to jump out of bed everyone and go to the gym, like you!!
Kelly @ Femme Fitale says
Last school year (I’m a teacher), my husband and I got up together at 4:45am at least 3-4 times a week for the gym.
1) At least your in it together!!!
2) At least your workout is done for the day!!!
3) Once it becomes routine, it isn’t too bad 🙂 Most days…
Sara @ The Foodie Diaries says
I’m not a morning gym person, so I usually wake up at 6:30-7:00 during the week days and 8:30-9:00 on the weekends! I remember the days back in college when I thought TEN O’CLOCK was waking up early and I could sleep in until noon! I could never do that now!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I used to wake up at 5am every day, but now that my school schedule is more relaxed and I’m tapering for the marathon, I’ve been all over the place. I need to get back on a real schedule!
Khushboo says
Anytime before 7 am is early for me! I’m up by 7.45 to hit the gym before work!
Heather @ Run Eat Play says
I usually get up at about 7 am and if my hubby wakes me up even 5 minutes earlier I feel like punching me. I’m such a dream in the morning 🙂
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I get up at 5am everyday for work. Over the past couple of years I have definitely become more of a morning person. I used to be a night owl and now I’m lucky if I can stay up past 10. I feel like a granny. Haha. 😉 The weekends, I try to sleep past 8am if I can but that usually doesn’t happen.
Katie says
The alarm goes off at 5:15 during the week so that I can be out the door and to the office by 7:00am; I love that first hour before everyone else gets there, I’m so much more productive in that hour.
On the weekends I usually only sleep in till about 7:30ish but sometimes if I’m really tired i will enjoy an afternoon nap =)
4 am is only for travel for sure…life doesn’t even make sense at that hour of the day!
Megan@funsizedfitness says
Lately, I’ve been waking up between 5-6 (ugh!)….but I set my alarm for 7 just in case. I think I’ve been waking up so early because I’m excited to drink my pumpkin spice coffee 🙂
Kristi @ lifesprinkles says
haha if someone wakes me up one SECOND before my alarm goes off I get so mad. Sleep is such a precious commodity!
Steph @ StephSnacks says
If I workout in the morning before work I am up by 6:10. If not, I am lucky enough to sleep in until a little after 7:30. The weekends vary! I wake up anytime from 8:00 – 9:00.
Julie says
OMG my hubby does the same thing and I just want to throw his alarm out the window. He says its to help me get up and I’m like no buddy I have no problems doing that. Now if it were to go off after mine or at the same time, I’d have no problems but he always sets it 5 min before mine….grr!
Beks says
I had to take two days off the last two weeks at work, so I moved my hours on those days (we work in 50 minute sessions) to various days throughout the week. I’ve been getting up at five so I can get to work by 7. BRUTAL! I was debating keeping the routine, though, so I can start going to the gym in the mornings before work. They say it takes two weeks to make a habit, right?
On weekends, if I get woken up before 8, there WILL be hell to pay. Except, usually it’s my cat, and she just wants to cuddle. Such a needy little thing.
Kim Perry says
I used to complain that the group fitness classes at my gym started too early (5:30am).
But my fiance got a new job so we now wake up at 4:30am! (Something I never thought I would do!!) I have SO much time at the gym now & plenty of time to get ready for work, I love it!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I had to open at work yesterday so I was up by 4:15. It was definitely early and I think i made up for it today when I slept an hour past alarm until 8am. Thankfully no work today so that was okay.. 😉
Jess says
I start work at 6 AM, so most mornings I’m up at 4:30. If I have to go in early for some reason, I’m up even earlier. It was torture initially, but after 6 years, I’m used to it now.
Chelsa says
I wake up at 7:30- 8 and I don’t think I’d be functional anytime before 7. I don’t like waking up later than 8 either because I am a morning person. It’s just a very small window for me.
Min says
I wake up at 4:!5 every morning. My school is more than an hour away from my house and I’d rather beat the traffic rather than be stuck in it. At first, it was really hard. I had to go to bed really early like 8:30 so that I can function the next day. And it’s hard since my husband works the evening shifts..we’re like passing ships..
But through all this, I’ve actually come to LOVE my mornings!
Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed says
I think 5 is pretty horrific haha. I get up around 6 am during the week and the weekends vary from 8 to 10 am. I remember the days of sleeping in till 2 pm in college, can’t believe it!
That breakfast is speaking my language, yum!
Emily says
during the week I get up around 6:30, sometimes 7 but anything in the 5am hour seems pretty awful to me. Before that? Good luck waking me up!! And I usually sleep until 8 or 9 on the weekends
Andrea @ Barbells and Buttercream says
We set the alarm for 5 a.m. I am very careful to make sure it’s at 5:00 and NOT 4:59!!! That would be WAY to early!!! My kids used to wake up with the sun on Saturday which should be criminal. I’m so happy they are teenagers now and I can wake THEM up! Ha ha!
Katie says
I feel like such a lazy bum! I cannot get out of bed before 7, and even then it is not what I would prefer, but I have to get my daughter to school and me to work by 8:15. I do get off of work at 4pm, so I can still be home after a workout by 5:30, which is nice. The weekends, is probably closer to 9 or 9:30.
Rachel says
I wake up at 5:45 on weekdays, normally 6:30 on weekends.
My husband has to be at work at 3 during the week. 3 AM!! He has to wake up at 2:45 to get to work. That just baffles me. I’d start every morning with a good cry if I had to wake up that early.
Katie says
Rachel, my boyfriend works at 4am and gets up at 3… I totally feel ya! Half the time I don’t hear him get out of bed, the other half I joke with him how warm the bed is. 😉
Rachel says
Ha! I do that too! “Oooh, the bed is so comfy.”
I’m so mean. 🙂
Katie says
I usually wake up around 5am. No time is too early for me! I love mornings no matter what hour. 🙂
Kaylyn says
Welcome back! I know how good it feels to get back into your ‘normal routine.’
Ever since I read your morning workout post explaining how to workout in the morning- I have totally revamped my morning routine. I now get up (and have been for over a month now!) at 5am and go to the gym 5 days a week. It has eliminated ALL of my excuses and has been SUCH a liberating feeling watching my body change and get stronger simply because I’m actually going instead of saying I’m going to go.
However, I’m one of ‘those people’ who set 3 alarms (starting at 4:45am) so I am ready to get up at 5am and greet my day (aka the gym). It helps me to give my body a warning… however I never actually get UP until 5am. Getting out of bed before then just seems horrible! 🙂
Have a fabulous weekend, Julie!
Yellow Haired Girl says
If I go to the gym before work, I’m up at 6:00. If not … I stay in bed as late as possible (like today!) and then end up running like a crazy person in order to get to work on time.
Rachel says
haha! I usually wake up at 7 on the week days (I get to work at 10), but anything before that I’m the grumpiest person ever lol
Annette@FitnessPerks says
Yes, any time in the 4 o’clock hour is WAY WAY too early. Hah. Depends on the day–but somewhere around 7 a.m. weekdays, 6 a.m Saturdays (I teach a fitness class early), and whenever I want on Sundays 🙂 I can sleep until 11 most Sundays….it’s my body’s HUGE break! LOVE.
