Today began with another early run. Sadie looked so darn cute this morning and she gave me those “take me with you” eyes, so I decided to take my workout outside and run again rather than head to the gym for a workout.
I think she appreciated it! Sadie is already taking her recovery nap, but not because she’s tired… because I’ve busted out my computer and she knows that means I’m going to be boring for a little while.
Breakfast
Breakfast this morning began with a cup of Greek yogurt that I ate about 20 minutes before my run.
After my run and a super-fast shower, I topped a toasted whole wheat English muffin with almond butter and unsweetened coconut.
I ate my breakfast while responding to emails and trying to spot my friend Merri on the Today Show! Merri lives in New York City (I visited her last December when she bought her wedding dress) and she and her sister Liz snagged a front row spot as Train performed on the show this morning.
I saw her for a second and it was way too cool!
During the Today Show, there was a commercial for the new Broadway musical Matilda based on the book by Roald Dahl. I absolutely loved that book when I was a kid! I actually read a bunch of Roald Dahl books and thought James and the Giant Peach was fantastic.
Other books I loved growing up:
- The Boxcar Children series
- The Bobbsey Twins series
- Shel Silverstein’s poetry books (I loved A Light in the Attic and Falling Up)
- Sweet Valley Twins series (and eventually Sweet Valley High)
- Baby-Sitter’s Little Sister series (This was the series that centered around Karen Brewer! It was a a spin-off of The Baby-Sitter’s Club for younger people who weren’t old enough for The Baby-Sitter’s Club yet. I actually liked the Little Sister series more than The Baby-Sitter’s Club, which I grew out of fairly quickly.)
Question of the Morning
- What were some of your favorite books to read when you were growing up?
aww I bet Sadie appreciated being included 🙂 i LOVED the babysitters club. also nancy drew.i read those series like people breathe air. i could not get enough.
Loved Goosebumps, Babysitters Club, Anne of Green Gables and Robert Munch!
I loved the Roald Dahl books! I also enjoyed BSC & Little Sister, Sweet Valley Twins & High, Boxcar Children and a lot of non-series books – my cousin was a teacher at the time & often gave me Newberry/Caldecott winning books for occasions. 🙂
I loved the Full House books. I read every single one of them. I remember there was a time I read two a day.
This is going to date me, but I loved the Trixie Belden Series. Matter of fact, I just ordered 2 I was missing from my collection and I am, um, in my 40’s! I still read them when I get stressed out. I find them very comforting to read when my world gets crazy.
I read the Boxcar children. I was also a HUGE Nancy Drew fan. For years those books fueled my dream of being a detective when I grew up.
Shel Silverstein’s “Where The Sidewalk Ends”, love that book!
Oh my gosh Julie I loved Sweet Valley High books! I wanted to be just like Jess Wakefield, I thought Liz was too much of a goody two shoes and the other twin had more fun. 🙂
I loved Shell Silverstein! I also loved The Babysitters Club and anything Judy Bloom.
I LOVED the Baby Sitters Club series and the Little Sister series. I grew out of the Little Sister series after a while because I started out reading those first (the print was HUGE!), and I think I read the Babysitters Club books well into high school (super embarrassing to admit). Even now, sometimes when I visit my parents and can’t sleep, I’ll grab one thats stored in my closet and read it, haha. There’s something awesome about re-reading childhood books!
This post makes me so happy! My favorite books were (okay are haha) the Berenstein Bears. My mom made sure to save them all for my kids. Amazing stories and lessons.
Almond butter and coconut are my favorite combo!
Hmmmm favorite childhood books…..Go! Dog Go! – when I was learning to read
Defiantly Matilda!
Didn’t really get into ready until Junior High, and when I did, I chose to read the Harry Potter series. Which made me fall in love with reading, been hooked ever since 🙂
Nancy Drew was my all-time favorite! I read the whole series through out elementary school!
Goosebumps!! And I grew up with the Harry potter generation 🙂 HP nerd
I actually have a tattoo of a page from my favorite children’s book! The Missing Piece by Shel Silverstein. I have a line of text (‘and as it rolled it softly sang-‘) and the image (it looks kind of like Pac Man) on my upper thigh. What can I say? I really love the book.
I was on the today show once for an instant… It was way cool. And my favorites have always been (and still are!) the Harry potter series. Love em!
I loved to read as a kid. I too LOVED Shel Silverstein. I also loved Alexander and the Horrible No Good Very Bad Day, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, the Little House on the Prairie series, Nancy Drew, and I LOVED the American Girls!!
the first book i ever read was green eggs and ham by dr. seuss! i was super little (like 3-4?) and read it to my mom in the dentist office. she started crying of course, and i couldn’t put books down after that. while in elementary school, i was obsessed with the saddle club series!
I just saw Matilda on broadway about a month ago! It was absolutely fantastic!
I was obsessed with Goosebumps books as silly as that sounds. They gave me such creeps, but I loooove Halloween!
I was addicted to Sweet Valley and the Babysitters Club! Did you know that Francine Pascal wrote a follow up to the SV series last year in which Elizabeth and Jessica are 30? It was really terrible, but so much fun to read for old times’ sake!
I always loved the Brownstein Bears. I can still remember the ones about manners lol.
I loved all of those books, too! 🙂 Another of my favorites was Angelina Ballerina.
awww, jealous of Train at the Today show, they’re amazing 🙂 I also liked the Sweet Valley books and the Baby Sitter’s Little Sister series growing up, I read a ton of those. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants takes me back to 8th grade, so I was a little more than pumped when a new one came out last summer!
I loved the Robert Munch books. He’s a Canadian Author who writes funny children’s books. Ever hear of the book “Mortimer?”
Loved all that you mentioned, and I’ll also add to my list: Nancy Drew series and The Babysitter’s Club!
Dr. Seuss was where it was at for this girl when I was real little! Some of the sweetest memories I have of my childhood with my momma. 🙂
I loved the Betsy, Tacy, and Tib series by Maud Hart Lovelace. They still remain some of my favorite books!
!!Woah! I just got super excited reading that they’ll have Matilda on Broadway!!!
My dog is sitting on my lap as I speak because he knows this is blog reading time LOL. Also, he’s learned whenever I get my ankle weights out during Kelly and Michael, it’s his nap time. He doesn’t bother me… as much. LOL I used to love James and the Giant Peach and Highlight books!
Ahhh I LOVED Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley High! Did you read the adult Sweet Valley high books that came out the last few years?? So great to revisit Sweet Valley, I wish Babysitters Club would do the same thing!
I loved the Baby Sitters Club books, especially the “special editions” like when they went on the Disney Cruise or on the ski trip. I also read Sweet Valley, I still love Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in The Attic.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, James and the Giant Peach, Stuart Little, the Black Cauldron, and Nancy Drew.
I’ve loved reading since I was really little. I think it’s because my mom read to me every single night 🙂
I was literally obsessed with the Baby-Sitter’s Club series! I started with Karen and then moved on to the older girls, and ended up with the mysteries (did anyone else skip the beginning of chapter 2 where they always described the characters?). I also own the board game (yes, still, at 27!), and had the computer game. I also remember the excitement I felt when the movie was first advertised on the TV. It was the only time I could remember getting really excited about a movie (until the Twilight saga came about, of course!).
I loved Boxcar Children as well! Also was a big Magic Treehouse and Berenstein Bears fan. And I have to add The View From Saturday, The Westing Game, Ella Enchanted, and the Little House on the Prarie books.
Ah I forgot Little House on the Prairie! I loved them too 🙂
I would have to agree and say that the Baby Sitters Club Series was probably my fave!
I was a total Baby Sitters Club fanatic. I remember my mom found a bunch of them for cheap at a garage sale, and I thought they looked so dumb. I’d still read them today if I saw one I never read as a child. I also loved the Boxcar Children and all Judy Blume Books.
I LOVED the Baby Sitters Club and the Little Sister series! My mom still has my whole collection because she said it reminded her too much of my childhood to throw them away or donate them…so we’ll keep them for my possible daughter one day 🙂 I also totally had the Baby Sitters Club board game…the movie…you name it 😉
Did anyone else read the American Girl series…I loved those too. Felicity was my girl. lol
Reading these comments is amazing! Like many others, I loved Babysitter’s Club, Boxcar Children, Roald Dahl, Shel Silverstein, and so many more! Also, Little Brown Bear and Goodnight Moon from when I was even younger. I loved to read (and still do – wish I made more time for it!)
You may just be a genius for putting coconut on your english muffin!! Why have I never thought about this combo. Off to buy some coconut now! Thanks for the inspiration.
I loved the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, anything by Ann Rinaldi (historical fiction for kids), and a series called The Thoroughbred Series by Joanna Campbell. “Mathilda” by Roald Dahl was actually the first chapter book I ever read – I can still remember the day!
I really like the Bernstein Bears series and my parents always read me “I love you forever” – I still have my copy of it =)
I loved the Ramona Quimby books!
I loved reading Beverly Cleary books about Ramona the pest!
Definitely Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey. Living in Boston, it was so awesome to go see the little duck statues in the Boston Public Garden. I knew all the ducks’ names by heart! As I got older, The Babysitters Club was definitely a favorite. Thanks for sharing 🙂
I loved the boxcar kids too and the babysitter little sister books were my fav!!
I loved the Boxcar Children and the pick your own adventure series as well as all the Fudge books!
LOVED the Boxcar children & Bobsey Twins, Trixie Belden & most especially Nancy Drew. I still re-read them now if I don’t have anything else to read.
I love these throw back posts! It bring back so many vivid memories of being a kid! I actually just looked up Boxcar Children to remind me what they were about, did you know there are over 100 titles now!! That is nuts!!
Has any one commented on the Hardy Boys yet?! I see Nancy Drew right above me and those were awesome too!
I feel the same way about the Babysitter’s Club series…the little sisters books were so much better!!!
Loved Roald Dahl! My favorite though would probably have to be The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Andrews.
