If you have the day off, I hope you’re enjoying some extra relaxation. If you’re working today then I hope your day goes by quickly!
I think quite a few people have the day off work in Orlando because the gym was quiet this morning. BodyPump wasn’t nearly as packed and I had no problem claiming and elliptical after class to pound out 20 minutes of light cardio.
Once our workouts were over, Ryan and I headed home to take Sadie on a walk in the dreary weather. It’s a gloomy day in Central Florida!
At least the ducks are enjoying the rain.
If it’s rainy where you are, please take some time to sing the best rainy day song everrr.
Though it was dreary outside, we still had a great walk and Sadie had a blast stalking squirrels and picking up sticks.
She’s a nut job. And I love her.
Breakfast
After our walk we came home ready for some breakfast!
Breakfast was poured from the blender today in the form of a chocolate covered strawberry green monster smoothie.
In the mix, for one smoothie:
- 1 c. milk
- 1 heaping scoop chocolate protein powder
- 8 frozen strawberries
- 2 large handfuls spinach
- 3 ice cubes
- 1 pinch xanthan gum (for thickening)
- 1 tbsp. cocoa powder
The spinach was 100 percent undetectable in this smoothie. Perfect-ooo!
And now for a little Ryan and Julie debate…
Pennies: Good Luck or Not-So-Much?
Find a penny. Pick it up. All day long you’ll have good luck. Right?
I always believed it was okay to pick up any penny. A penny on the ground is always good luck in my opinion.
Well, to Ryan this is simply not so. Pennies found “tails up” should be left untouched because they’re bad luck.
I told him he was ridiculous and that all pennies are great! There is that wonderful rhyme saying so, afterall!
Find a penny. Pick it up. All day long you’ll have good luck!
Ryan answered back with this little gem…
Find a penny and if it’s tails, death will come, it never fails.
What!?
Yes, he made it up. Quite the rhymer though, huh?
We’d love to know your take on this little argument.
Are all pennies good luck, or are some pennies doomed for gloom?
LoLo says
Good Luck pennies are ‘heads’ up, BUT if you see a ‘tails’ up penny, turn it over and make your own luck 🙂 Or turn it over and leave it so it will be lucky for someone else!
Jenn says
I agree with LoLo! This is what I have always known. Sorry Julie, Ryan’s got my vote on this one- lol
Lauren says
I have to agree with the women above. I was always taught that tails up was bad luck.
Ryan wins this one!
MJ says
I agree, if it’s tails up, you turn it over and leave it behind for someone else to find and get the good luck. Sorry Julie. (btw i love that name as it’s my mom’s!)
Jamie @ Food in Real Life says
Only heads up!!
Shannon @ Philadelphia Phitness Pharmacy says
Heads is good luck! Tails – not so good…
Emily says
This is so funny. Of course I’ve heard the rhyme that you mentioned and I feel like I still say it in my head (cough cough, loser), but for some reason, I always think in my head that I should only pick up the ones that are “heads up.” I feel like now-a-days I’ll pick up any penny (strugglin college student, right huuuuur), but I would definitely avoid the tails up ones when I was younger… I dont know why, though, or where that notion came from! I side with you now, but Emily 10 years ago is totally agreeing with Ryan
Stephanie says
Heads up!!! 🙂 (sorry??)
Jenn says
Only heads up:)
I learned the rhyme as:
Find a penny, heads side up, all day long you’ll have good luck.
Julie Nicole says
That’s the one I know! I won’t pick up a tails-up penny unless it flips over when I kick it! ; )
dana says
well, i am gonna have to go with ryan, sorry! i only pick up ones with the heads up and i learned the same rhyme as the above poster. sorry!
Ashley @ 365 things says
If I actually liked pennies, I’d say finding one is good luck no matter what side you find it on. To be quite honest though, I don’t like pennies, so I don’t pick them up at all…lol! I use every opportunity I can to spend them and get them out of my wallet so my purse is a little lighter. 🙂
Hope says
I’m with Ryan on this one. I only pick up pennies if they are heads up. Then you will have good luck 🙂
Allison@ Happy Tales says
“FInd a penny, pick it up, then all day you’ll have goodluck… but only if it’s HeadsUp!!!”
Yep, that’s what the Cincinnati kids have been singing since the early 90s…at least at my elementary school.
Lol, that duck youtube video is hilarious. Do you really sing that to Ryan? Oh man..
Sadly I’m one of the ones who has work today. Hoping it goes by quickly!
Katy (The Singing Runner) says
I only pick up heads up pennies… 😀
Shanna says
Ryan is right on this one. Tails are no good!
Chicago Cuisine Critique says
I’m also with Ryan on this one. I pick up pennies but am sure to look at which side they are facing before doing so. An old wives tale i’m sure, but I definitely don’t want to take the chance of any bad luck coming my way. 🙂
Corrie Anne says
You’re definitely only supposed to pick the ones up that are heads up. However, I like to flip them for the next person if I see them tails up.
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
I’ve picked up both…apparently neither of us ever got the heads up memo!! I blame it on that scene in Grease where Frenchie picks up a penny before the big race 🙂
Steph says
I always thought it was any penny – it wasnt until about 3 years ago that someone informed me of the difference between heads vs. tails up pennies when the individual refused to pick up a tails-up penny.
Either way, I dont care – I think a penny found in any configuration is good luck 🙂
Stephanie Clement says
Hi Julie!!
So before I weigh in, I wanted to tell you that I’m newly engaged and I’ve been following some of your wedding planning and it’s been wonderful!! So, THANK YOU!!!!
Okay, so unfortunately I am going to have to agree with Ryan: Find a penny, heads side up, all day long you’ll have good luck. But its okay, we have to let the boys win SOME times…
Lindsay @ The Lean Green Bean says
i’m with ryan. i only pick them up if they’re heads up
Katrina says
Finding money seems like good luck in any case, so I always pick up pennies regardless of the way they’re turned!
Ashley from Texas says
I usually don’t pick it up (heads or tails) if it’s anywhere kids might be. But only because I want them to have all the luck! In fact sometimes I make sure to drop some pennies in “safe” (i.e. not on the street) places where the kids can find them.
But I asked my fiancee about this debate and he’s with you Julie with the exception of “it’s tails up and an especially shady looking penny???” Did anyone else know pennies could look shady?
Caroline says
I am also in Ryan’s camp on this one!
This debate reminds me of one of my college professors – on a regular basis he would tell the class that it was immoral to pick up change, as it does not belong to you. He said that a penny was no different than a lost wallet. I don’t think he converted any of us to that way of thinking.
Allison says
My aunt told me that for the luck to come to have to give it away. I carry the nickel (5x luckier) she gave me with me all the time.
I still may be the most unlucky person ever, but it’s a nice feeling to know a little part of her is with me everyday.
Sarah says
heads up only… for tails up, flip it over so the next person finds it heads up!
Kerry Ann says
I agree with you Julie. My father taught me that one and also “Take care of the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves.”
Kathie @ Frugal, Fit and Fabulous says
Mmm love me some choco strawberry green smoothies. it’s been sooo cold here i havent even wanted my green smoothie (tho ive been missing it)
Penny is definately only tails up!!!
Amanda (Eating Up) says
I side with Ryan…
Laura says
Im with Ryan on this—only pennies head up should be picked up, pennies tails up are bad luck. Which is why when I find a penny face down I flip it over so the next person will have good luck 🙂 Oh and if you find a penny heads up that was made your birth year its extra luck!
Molly says
I have never heard that a penny tail side down is bad luck. Crazy! I am with you a penny is a penny and should be taken!
Lisa says
hahahah thats so funny!
Katie says
I agree with the heads up. But for some reason (and I can’t figure out why), I thought I had to put the heads-up penny in my shoe in order for the good luck to happen?
Or maybe I just didn’t want anyone to steal my lucky penny. Who knows.
Annette says
Any type of penny is good luck!!! 🙂
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
All pennies!!
Healthy Chocohlic says
I think that all pennies are good!!!!
Molly says
I’ve heard both! I never bother to pick them up though haha.
Ashley says
Cute rhyme, but I will only pick up a penny if it’s heads up! Tails up is BAD luck;)
Tori says
I have ALWAYS lived by “Find a penny, pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luck!” And of course I recite it in my head everytime I find one:) I am definitely on your side for this one
Gill (snaxandthecity) says
Haha that made me laugh. I’ve heard that you should always pick up the pennies, but that tails were just ‘less good luck’ than heads!
Ashley P. @ The Vegetable Life says
I’m with you…. I pick up any penny for good luck…. any penny is more money is my pocket right?!
Bethany @ More Fruit Please says
While I’ve never heard of Ryan’s saying, I’m siding with him on this. I only pick up a heads up penny!
Jessica says
I have to agree with Ryan as well. Tails up pennies are bad luck!
Amber K says
I have to agree with other commenters. Heads up = good luck. If it’s tails I flip it over for someone else.
mary (sisters running the kitchen) says
I bet lots of people slept in and went to the gym later since they were off. My gym was packed…but I went around 9:30.
That’s so funny about the penny thing. I am on Ryan’s side, any penny on tales is bad luck and should not be touched! Only pennies on head are good luck. BUT I can see where you are coming from since that saying is so common!
Maryann says
I’m with ryan on this one 🙂 However if I come across any other coin, even if its tails side up, ill pick it up!
elysie says
I loved the circuit workout you posted Saturday morning. I did 2 rounds of that last night in addition to a couple rounds of a weights circuit I normally do and I got a great workout! The high knees jog was so challenging!! I have never done that and didn’t think it would be that hard, but that kicked my butt! I’ve been trying to change up my routine and having you post workouts like that makes it so easy to mix things up!
Thanks again!
Heather says
I’ve always thought any penny was good luck! “Find a penny pick it up [ if it’s on heads ] all day long you’ll have good luck!” just doesn’t have the same ring to it!
I will definitely have to try that GM recipe! Who doesn’t love chocolate covered strawberries?
Caitlin (EatFeats) says
I pick up all pennies! Sometimes I think they will bring me luck, but mostly I just feel sad that they are so neglected. Poor pennies!
Fallon says
I only pick up pennies that are on head only! Other wise it is bad luck.
Carrie says
ahahahah he made that up on the spot!! i am very impressed…meh i used to believe in superstitions, but not anymore.. if its money .. ill take it 😉
Courtney @ the granola chronicles says
Pick it up! I think it’s always good luck to find money! 🙂
Heather (Heather's dish) says
Hahaha wow that’s a pretty sad little rhyme! I think they’re all good luck…I’ll take free money any day!
