I found Janae’s blog several months ago and have been an avid reader ever since. Since I can’t run ridiculously fast marathons like she can, I found her athleticism inspiring, but I became hooked on her blog due to her upbeat personality and her intense love of candy and her family. Though I may never (ever) run a half marathon in 1:35 like Janae (ridiculous, I know), I still relate to her desire to continually improve herself in the gym… and eat her bodyweight in candy too.
Enjoy!

Guest Post: The Hungry Runner Girl
I literally squealed when Julie asked me to do a guest post on her blog. You see I have been stalking Peanut Butter Fingers since I can remember and have looked up to her for her positivity, healthy life-style, fashion and awesome recipes! I think we are all a little obsessed with her.
I may not live in beautiful Florida (ahem, more like freezing Utah), I don’t have the cutest dog in the world, and I haven’t gone longer than a week without desserts since my mother’s womb but I do share the common LOVE of fitness that Julie has and that is what I wanted to talk about today.
How to find motivation to start working out or to stick with it:
1. Find a buddy to work out with. My sis is my favorite gym buddy and when one of us doesn’t feel like working out the other talks them into it and next thing you know the endorphins have kicked in and the good times roll.
2. Sign up for a race (that is if you like running)! I refuse to waste $90 on a marathon and not follow through with it.
3. Try different things – not everyone loves to run and you don’t have to do what everyone else is doing. If you are having a hard time at the gym and dread working out try different classes (pump, spin, Zumba) or try something new outdoors (biking, swimming, hiking, tennis). Find what YOU love and what you are passionate about. As much as I LOVE running I do have to add in different forms of exercise so I don’t burn out.
4. Tell people your goals. Once I tell other people about my goals and dreams I will do whatever it takes to reach those goals and then post my accomplishment on Facebook so that the kids that made fun of me in high school see it… Yes, I have major issues.
5. Eat ridiculous amounts of fro-yo. I don’t know how this slipped in and what it has to do with exercise but it is a common theme of my blog and as I was writing this I got a sudden craving for it.
6. Remember that working out isn’t just about burning calories and losing weight (I used to workout for that reason only and I dreaded it). Exercise for your mental health, to do something positive for yourself, to take care of your body, to ward off disease and sickness, to improve your confidence and build relationships.
Question of the Day from Janae (loving that rhyme )
What motivates you to exercise?
Khushboo says
Great post! THe endorphins defo motivate me to workout! Once I stopped concentrating on calories burned but instead on the way it makes me feel, my desire to exercise amplified!
And AMEN: the more fro yo the better!

Love this!

growing up and to this day my father has struggled with his health. When I see all the things he’s been through it motivates me to stay in shape and live the healthiest life possible to prevent illness and to feel good about myself!
Allison @ Happy Tales says
I completely agree with you, Brooke, and that’s a huuuuge part of why I live aim to live a healthy lifestyle. I’ve seen so many of my family members’ health deteriorate over the years, and I want to try and prevent that as best I can!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Oooh I agree with all these points, especially the fro yo! Mental health is also what motivates me to work out. I feel so energized after a run, and ready to take on the day! Great guest post!
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
I feel so good when I’m exercising — the next day I can still feel my legs pumping and I just love it. I also usually have an event that I’m training for and having that sort of plan is motivation to keep exercising.
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Yay, another blog to follow! Janae is a unique name – my mother’s is Dane’ and no one every pronounces it right – she should spell it with the A-E.

Reading The Hungry Runner Girl blog motivates me to exercise.
Cassie @ Tofu Meets Her Match says
Having a workout buddy is key for me, at least for running–I run with my fiance and he keeps me going, without him I would undoubtedly run like a mile and then just go sit down.
Love your blog Janae!!
Sylvia @ Frolic Through Life says
Great post. All of your advice is really good, but I especially liked the fro yo advice! 😉

One thing that motivates me to workout.. is the feel good enorphins that I KNOW I will have when I am done!
Lauren says
I love Janae’s blog! Telling people my goals is a big motivator of mine. I recruit a bunch of friends to come cheer me on for my half marathon, which is going to be huge motivation during the race!
I’m also motivated by those awesome endorphins.
Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun says
Love Janae! And love that you slipped in the fro yo, Janae. What would life be without it? 😉
Rachel @ The Perseverance Diaries says
What motivates me is how GOOD it makes me feel when I exercise. I was diagnosed with cancer in February of 2011 and i STILL exercise, my doctor actually encourages it when I’m feeling up for it. Surprisingly I am usually always up for it, it makes me feel so alive and healthy.
I used to workout to burn calories only, making myself go on the stairmaster for 45 minutes at a time! Now I just enjoy jogging, walking, hiking outdoors and lovin’ it 🙂
Shannon says
Wonderful post! I feel so at peace with myself when I workout. I feel strong and capable, which is truly a great feeling

PBfinger’s mantra “Your one workout away from a good mood” always gets me moving too!

First time reading your blog. Now I will be hooked on yours and Julie’s. Both so positive and motivational. (Also, my daughter’s name is Janay ,pronounced the same as yours. I have only known one other person with that name and now you!! Thanks, have a great weekend.
Lauren @ Hungry Child in the City says
Great Guest Post! I love that fro-yo was thrown in there, because it is one of my fave things too! Also, I like that you workout for your mental health and not for the calories burned, I think feeling good and shedding stress is a stronger motivator than losing some weight.
Sherri says
My two favourite bloggers on one page? Holy crap.
My exercise motivation comes from just being grateful to have the ability to move! And, I always act as though I don’t know when I’ll be able to fit in my next workout. Next thing you know, I’m having to schedule a day OFF instead of scheduling workouts.
The key is to JUST DO IT for a while and eventually it will become something you feel WEIRD not doing.
Oh and of course, huge motivation comes from following my fave bloggirls (Julie & Janae!).
Cat says
I would also add “make sure you have a kick-ass playlist!!” I find it really does help!
Melissa says
I feel so accomplished when I finish a long run or work up a good sweat–that’s the motivation for me! Plus, the rush of endorphins I get from running is like nothing else! I’m addicted! 😀

So great to see one of my fave bloggers, Hungry Runner Girl, on another one of my fave blogs, PB Fingers. And your post couldnt have come at a better time. I’m lacking workout motivation majorly. So, I decided to sign up for another marathon. Gives me a concrete goal!

Holler to my fellow Utahn!! The great weather we’ve been having lately (ok for like 3 days haha) has been a huge motivation to get outdoors! I love going on long walks and enjoying spring!
Nathanmiller says
I run 6 miles religiously at 5:00am everymorning, and and stoked for the Indianapolis mini 500 tomorrow that I signed up for, its my first half marathon, but have had alot of motivation and advice leading up to it. But my motivation every morning comes from inside. I hvae now lost over 130 pounds since my Senior year in highschool, close to 4 years now. And I never want to go back to where I physically. Thus I just remind myself how I looked and felt back then and it gets my butt out of bed everymorning.
Great guest blog post today!
Emily @ Operation Emily says
Great post! Love your blogs ladies! I am thinking about signing up for my first 5K. It’s scary!
Clare @ Fitting It All In says
What motivates me to exercise is knowing how UNHEALTHY I was in the past. Coming from an eating disorder, I love that I can fuel my body and push it hard!

I defiantly follow the Fro yo rule. I have frozen yogurt Thursdays every week but I sometimes have it more. My rowing teammates motivate me to workout. I want to improve my fitness so I can help the boat move faster and they are all my workout buddies. I also cant stand the feeling of not having a working out

This was a great guest post. AND it was just when I needed it. I currently training for the boilermaker and I am at a stand still with boredom. Thanks so much!
Lea @ healthy coconut says
What motivates me to workout is to take care of my health and to feel good in general. My family has some health history that if not taken care of, it could affect me also. Plus, working out is fun 🙂

I totally agree that working out isn’t just about looks! It’s about longterm health~ 🙂
Vivianne says
Amen to #5 and #6…
For me, I am not a runner. I try to run every once in awhile because truly nothing touches it in how good it is for you! But it’s really hard on my knees and I get shin splints easily, so I have to take it easy.
Froyo is the best. It was my go to pick me up this year at college, or my go to celebration dessert! It’s so delicious<3
I used to exercise because I thought, "I'll get fat if I don't do this." Now I do it because it's good for my body and I do it to take care of myself so that I can be healthy and happy (:
I've finally found that I am a yogi at heart and my yoga mat is my home!
Molly Jac says
