After feeling sick nearly the whole weekend, I’m a little apprehensive to eat anything too “out there” just yet, so a simple bagelwich sounded perfect when lunchtime rolled around. (Fish is seriously grossing me out right now, which, for a fish-lover like me, is quite odd. I hope my love of seafood returns fast!)
Along with my muenster cheese and raspberry jelly bagelwich, I ate some red pepper slices for some added nutrients. It was a rather small lunch for me (no Greek yogurt, nuts or anything on the side), but my morning snack was on the larger side, so I’m feeling quite satisfied.
I also drank a bottle of Cascade Ice pink grapefruit flavored sparkling water that I received from the company to try.
It was so, so good. I loved the fizz from the carbonation and the sweet but slightly tart flavor of pink grapefruit was spot-on. Delish!
First Big Girl Job
I have some exciting news on the family front! My sister accepted her first “big girl” job yesterday and will have a full-time job waiting for her two weeks after she graduates from the University of Florida.
Leslie was fortunate enough to be offered two full-time jobs within the past week… one in Tampa and one in Orlando. Initially (and selfishly) I was crossing my fingers for her to select the job in Orlando since I wanted her close to me, but eventually I realized that the job in Tampa truly is a better fit for her and can offer her the most professional growth in the long run.
I’m so excited for her! I can tell she feels a lot less stressed now that she has a job lined up. (Just in case you are feelin’ the heat on the job front, check out my post on how to find your first job.)
Leslie’s first “big girl” job made me start thinking about all of the jobs I’ve held throughout the years. When I started thinking about it, I’ve worked an awful lot!
In chronological order, here’s a list of my past (paid) jobs, beginning with my first job at the age of 15:
- Pool Attendant (I checked people in at our local community pool, cleaned the pool deck, etc.)
- Lifeguard + Swim instructor + Diving instructor
- Hostess at Applebee’s
- Marketing Intern for Raymond James Financial
- Marketing Intern for SeaWorld
- Tour Guide for UCF (This is where I had my awful run-in with a squirrel that scarred me for life)
- Public Relations Coordinator for UCF Student Government
- Public Relations Intern for FMPA
- Public Relations and Marketing Assistant for the Orlando Museum of Art (my first “big girl” job)
- Marketing Manager for ARAMARK
- Content Team Manager (Current job, Employer kept private for personal safety)
Questions of the Afternoon
- What is the most unusual job you’ve had?
- What has been your favorite job?
My most unusual job was probably working for SeaWorld because I had to drive around in a Shamu car (you can see a picture of my wheels here) and look like a total fool. My favorite job is my current job or when I worked as a lifeguard with all of my friends in high school. Nothing beats working with your best buds and enjoying the summer sun all day!
Carrie says
ive been feeling off a little too! maybe i caught your bug via cyberspace!.. ahh that is so exciting for your sis!! im still a bit young so the only jobs iv had are : working for a photography class for middle schoolers.
annnddd babysitting- woo!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Congrats to Leslie! That’s great news! My weirdest job was probably doing event promotions and fashion shows for various companies when I lived in the Middle East. In one show, I had to model Arabic clothing (think abayas – the black coverings that they wear) and I don’t look Arab at all! It was fun at the same time though! My favourite job is probably my current part-time one as a spin instructor. Nothing beats getting a good sweat on and having fun with great groups of participants at the same time!
kimmah says
My most unusual job was when I was young. . . really young. . . I worked at a carnival! It was great. I ran games on the midway in all the small midwest cities and had a blast!!
Christine @ Merf In Progress says
wow, how exciting. My first job was calling people who used to pay $50 dues for a trade association and explaining to them that their dues had increased to $10,000. Oh yes, you read that right. Needless to say, I got used to being told to F off pretty quick!
krista says
LOL how does THAT happen?
Hope says
Congrats to your sister! That is so exciting! The first day of your big girl job right after college is super exciting! I wish her the best of luck! 🙂
Tori says
Congratulations to your sister! How exciting:)
I am graduating in May also and hope to have a job lined up, but nothing so far! Fingers crossed;)
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
Most unusual job — scooping up poop at a petting zoo! I was 14 and it was an awful job. I did like being near the baby goats and bunnies though!
Worst job – worked at a collections agency for Capitol One credit cards. I cried almost every day.
Favorite job — I worked at Pier 1 Imports from age 16-23 and I loved it there. Sometimes I wish I was still working for them!
Ashley says
Congrats to your sister! I just accepted a job offer yesterday as well – exciting times 🙂
most unusual – working as a nurse recruiter. It was very hard working with families of pediatric home care patients. gut wrenching.
favorite so far – coordinating a national wine and food festival.
peanutbutterfingers says
congrats, ashley! that’s so exciting!
carlee says
My first legit job was at a bakery this summer! It was actually pretty fun excpet the boss was a mean…you know what 😉 Her plus oo much with school combined caused me to quit!
Lauren says
Congrats to your sister! My favorite job has been as a summer camp counselor. Getting paid to play outside with kids & eat s’mores at campfires – awesome!
Sherri says
I have a bagelwich question Julie! I bought some bagelwiches on the weekend and some organic raspberry jam and am excited to try the jam/cheese bagelwich concoction you love so much. But, the only reduced fat cheese I could find at my local grocery store was provolone. Have you done this before? Or do you only go with the muenster?
peanutbutterfingers says
i’ve never tried provolone, but i’m SURE it would work! i’ve used muenster and swiss, but i think any cheese you like would be just fine.
Rachel says
I love the bagelwich with provolone and blackberry jam – it is sooo delicious!
Sherri says
Ah – turns out it’s delicious with provolone and raspberry jam too! YUM!
Victoria (District Chocoholic) says
Mmmmm…driving around in a Shamu car actually sounds pretty cool. I hope you have saved pics of that.
I think every job I’ve had since finishing school has been weird. Actinide chemist? Nuclear weapons facility safety analyst? Computational hydrologist? Commercial nuclear reactor risk analyst? I’m a freak.
Oh right. And synchronized swimming coach.
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
I don’t know if I’ve ever had any unusual jobs, but I love the job I’m currently at! I’m a fifth grade teacher. I also loved waitressing in college. So. Much. Fun.
Shelby says
My 86 year old neighbor payed me $50 dollars a month for like half a year to call her everyday to make sure she was still alive. She had a bunch of rules and I hated calling her and I kept forgetting to call. She finally got mad and “fired me.” She is still alive without that phone call.
peanutbutterfingers says
OMG I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard at a comment. This seriously had me CRACKING up.
Annie says
OMG you are kidding….so, what happened if she didn’t answer? Were you supposed to call the police? Go over there and check on her? What a bizarre request…
Shelby says
Yes I was supposed to go over and possibly find her dead at the bottom of the stairs. Which made no sense to me because she wanted me to call her around the same time everyday. I usually called her at 5:00pm. Which wouldn’t help her if something happened at 5:01pm. and I didn’t call again for another 24hrs.
janetha @ meals & moves says
I had a big red bell pepper AND a bagelwich for lunch today too. We are on the same wavelength 😉 Except mine was tuna, which you could not have done ha. Hope you get to liking fish soon!
peanutbutterfingers says
me too! i love seafood. this is so odd for me!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
I’m still doing my “first job”… my father has owned several Diners over the years where I started waitressing on the weekend when I was 15, and I still work at one every Saturday! It’s fun and extra income.
Shanna, Like Banana says
Congrats to your sister! That’s fantastic! 🙂
Hmm, weirdest job for me was probably teaching international graduate students how to teach (as an undergrad). I had to basically show them how American students learn.
Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) says
CONGRATS to your sister!
My favorite job to date was at Baskin Robbins when I was 16. I was so popular that year because I hooked people up with ice cream- haha 🙂
Amy B says
Congrats to your sis! Tampa isn’t too far away…I’m sure you’ll see her plenty 😉
Also, I totally dig your shamu car…I kinda wish I had one for myself. I think I’d be a hit on the streets of nyc.
krista says
YAY for Leslie! What type of job did she get?
peanutbutterfingers says
it’s a job in sales for a big company. i’m excited for her!
Laura J. says
My husband just got a sales job with Aramark! 🙂 ha Did you like working there?
peanutbutterfingers says
oh i hope he likes it! …let’s just say the job wasn’t for me. 😉 i think his job will be really different than mine though. i worked as the marketing manager for UCF’s dining services program, which essentially focused on selling meal plans to students. it was INTENSE and my boss wasn’t very good at allowing his employees to have any kind of a work/life balance. i actually took a $10k pay-cut to take my current job b/c my life was consumed by that job. i think employment w/ ARAMARK really depends on where you work. i think i would’ve loved working in their corporate offices.
Laura J. says
Aaa I hope so! 🙂 haha
Emily says
my craziest job was as a “post-construction final cleaner.” Basically I walked around construction sites wearing a helmet and carrying a broom. Worst. Summer. Ever.
I’m with you on the lifeguarding. Nothing like getting paid to gossip with your girlfriends and ogle hot boys in swimsuits all summer long.
Gavi @ Gavi Gets Going! says
I love Cascade Ice, especially the strawberry lemonade flavor. They’re so delicious and refreshing!
I’m only 23, so I haven’t had a lot of jobs yet. So far, I’ve enjoyed interning at a few places (a museum was definitely the coolest), being a nanny, and, last year, teaching kindergarten. I wouldn’t say being a kindergarten teacher is particularly unusual, but it is a pretty awesome–and challenging–position. Plus it makes for a great conversation starter. Everyone remembers their kindergarten teacher and wants to talk about him/her! 🙂
Clare @ Fitting It All In says
My strangest job was definitely as a cook in a little hippie restaurant. I was not trained AT ALL!
My favorite job was probably working at a little boutique gift store in highschool
Lindz @ Happy or Hungry? says
Congrats to your sister! It’s such a relief to have a job lined up.
I haven’t really ever had a weird job…but my first job was at Dairy Queen. Let me just say…I gained some weight. I ate Blizzards all day long! I learned that I can NOT work around ice cream.
Fave job is my current job, as a communications & marketing coordinator for a sports organization. I love it! I love my office family, and I’m able to go out and snap photos of sporting events a lot of the time. It’s nice to get out of the office. Plus we have office boccia ball and office yoga. I definitely have a lot of perks 😉
Katy @ A Healthy Shot of Life says
Congratulations to your sister!! It took a few months for me to find a PR job after college, so I’m sure it feels awesome that she’s got that stress off her back!
My favorite job was probably lifeguarding at the lake by my house- I was going to be there everyday anyway, why not get paid to work on my tan? ;O)
Gen says
Congrats to your sister!!!!!!!!!
Hope you’re feeling 100 percent soon! 😀
Holly at HLD Fashion says
congratulations to your sis! she’s all growed up! 😛 🙂
Katie says
Congrats to your sister!! 🙂 And I really need to try your bagelwich. That looks amazing!
My favorite job would be when I worked for my mom’s company not too long ago. I loved the work! I was an administrative assistant and did a lot of paperwork (filling stuff out). I loved it! The girls I worked with were so much fun and we had a blast together everyday.
Heather (Heather's dish) says
I’d say blogging is my favorite job…even though it’s nowhere near full time 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
good call. mine too! 😀
Rachel says
I am also having stomach issues today and all I’ve managed to eat is a bagelwich. Maybe it is a miracle food for those with sensitive tummies! 🙂
The weirdest job I had was probably from ages 15 to 18, I worked in retail and mail order at a local peach farm that is the biggest producer on the East Coast. I live in GA and grew up in the region where all the peaches come from.
My favorite job is my current one – also my first big girl job which I secured three months after college graduation and have been in for two years. I work for the Social Security Administration at a local office, specifically I work in the SSI (welfare) program doing claims and helping current beneficiaries. It is, usually, a rewarding job, and when it’s not, the paycheck does help. 🙂
Meaghan says
I worked on a wiretap for my city’s police department and homeland security. It was like a real life The Wire episode. I was in college and it paid like $30 an hour, so I thought I was such a baller! Plus, it was fascinating to hear the inner workings of the drug dealers. Part of the operation used tractor trailers to transport drugs across the country and one of the drives used to have his wife call and sing Bible songs to him for hours as he drove, and we’d have to listen the entiiiire time, that was the only annoying part of the job, haha.
Melissa says
I once had a summer job at NASA, that was crazy! I didn’t do much, but neither did the scientists I worked with. We spent most of the day gossiping.
My favorite job thus far is being a Peace Corps volunteer. I get to do as much or as little as I like and spend 3 years helping others. Its awesome!
Jamie @ getalivingsense says
Yay, that’s awesome that she got TWO job offers! I actually passed your sister walking on campus today…(I also go to UF) I felt like a total creep knowing who she is! Haha
peanutbutterfingers says
oh you should’ve said hi! leslie is really friendly, i swear. 🙂
Leanne@Coffee&Claptrap says
My fave job had to be some promotional work for a shop I did, it was hilarious!
My least favourite was for a chemical storage company where I had to BEG for tasks because I was SO bored! 🙁
Stacey says
I was a lifeguard too for 5 years from age 15-20, mostly in the summer but i did work a the YMCA during my senior year and taught swim lessons as well as lifeguard. It was my most favorite job. Getting paid to be outside, get a tan, adn swim,
Stephanie @ LiveCookLove says
Congrats to your sister! I know it’s such a relief having a job lined up!! Now she can really enjoy the last few months as a college student 😉
My weirdest job was that I worked at Chuckie Cheeses and I had to dress up as Chuckie!! It was hot in that mouse costume!!!
My favorite job before my current job was waiting tables. I love talking to everyone that came to sit at my tables and you never know what tip you got, so it was like opening a Christmas present every night, over and over!! I love surprises!
Annie says
What degree is your sister getting? What a relief to have a plan of action after graduation 🙂
I haven’t had any “strange” jobs, but I liked working as a retail consultant for FedEx Kinkos…my coworkers were hilarious, and it was just too much fun…up until we got fired for making a video about how to use a fax machine :-X Hahahaha
It’s nothing special, but I love my job now because it’s just what I’m good at (working with people!), and my BFF works in the same office so I frequent her office a lot to chit chat, and we have lunch dates. Definitely makes the days more enjoyable!
peanutbutterfingers says
she’ll be graduating with a degree in public relations.
Stephanie@MyThornsHaveRoses says
I haven’t really had an “unusual” jobs but I’ll go with coaching a high school dance team. My favorite job was working for Jared’s (jewelry store) because I could walk around trying on new pieces. But it wasn’t an ideal job because as a mom the hours were crap. I
Candice says
Ok with your stomach issues I have to ask, are you prego?? 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
haha nooo!
Laura says
haha i was thinking this too!! especially since fish is turning you off!! 😉
Alyssa - fashion fitness foodie says
Congratulations to your sister!!
The weirdest job i had was abercrombie and fitch. They rated you an a, b or c and that decided on where you were allowed to stand in the store!
peanutbutterfingers says
oh i worked there too! but only for like 3 weeks.
Kristen says
I have only had two jobs. I was a lifeguard from 15-18 every summer. And whats not to love about sun, friends, and the pool haha. Now I am a NICU nurse and I love that too.
Abby says
My oddest job was my paper route. There was one really scary lady who chased me out of her yard and would call my house and yell at me if her paper wasn’t on the chair by her front door by 7:30 AM when the delivery deadline wasn’t even until 8 AM!
I just got offered a job today as well! 😀
Sara @ The Bucket List says
Congratulations to your sister! I’m being flown up to Rhode Island for a final interview for potentially my first big girl job!! Wish me luck!
My favorite job was definitely as a server at a restaurant near home. I loved it!
peanutbutterfingers says
ooh awesome. good luck, sara!
Tara @The Game of Life says
I had a similar thing to me happen yesterday… I mixed greek yogurt and pumpkin butter together and almost gaged after the first bite! I don’t think I can ever eat greek yogurt again I am so disgusted!!! 🙁
Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles says
Congrats to your sister!!
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
I haven’t had that many jobs..but I think my favorite is by far the one I’m holding right now as a yoga instructor. I love, love, love it!! Second most favorite was a horseback riding camp counselor. 🙂
Big congratulations to your sister!!! 😀 Best of luck to her.
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
Hmm Julie do you think you MAY have gotten something from seafood? B/c normally, when people get sick from a particular food, they don’t even want to look at that food. I hope not! fish is so the best! glad you’re better though. 🙂 wow you’ve had lots of jobs! Hmmmm my fave job thus far, is my current one! I work with an autistic student and he’s literally ONE of the apples of my eye haha. Seeing him improve is awesome.
Lori Lynn says
For me it was normal, but for some people it would be unusual– I worked in the hayfield with my older and brother driving a tractor for 8 summers growing up– It was a 1955 C International tractor (And I’m only 32.). No air conditioning, no cab- just out in the bright sun making hay bales!
Alexa @ Simple Eats says
I loved working at my parent’s deli. Nothing was better than getting to see my momma’s face all day, joking around with her and eating her yummy, homemade food!
