Our second day in Gettysburg began with a little exercise!
My mom is an avid Jazzeriser in Jacksonville and scouts out Jazzercise classes whenever she travels. She found one close to my grandmother’s house in Gettysburg and invited me and my sister to join her for a 9 a.m. class on Friday morning.
The class lasted about an hour and included 20 minutes or so of weights, core work and light stretching. We had fun jumping around and dancing to upbeat music and left the class vowing to return again before we fly back to Florida. Every time I take Jazzercise I am reminded of just how fun the class truly is and how welcoming all of the instructors seem to be no matter where you go. If you’re at all interested in an aerobic, dance-based workout that doesn’t require a lot of coordination in a positive, uplifting environment, I highly recommend Jazzercise.
The Majestic
After Jazzercise, we drove back to my grandma Mimi’s house to join her for breakfast. We had cereal and eggs and enjoyed a relaxing morning with her until it was time for Mimi’s physical therapy appointment. While she met with her physical therapist, my mom, dad, sister and I went to see an afternoon movie at The Majestic.
The Majestic is a local movie theatre in Gettysburg and it was the location of my parents’ first date back when they were teenagers!
Since the weather was dreary, making it the perfect movie-watching weather, we decided to see The Gettysburg Story, a documentary about the historic battle. I really enjoy documentaries and thought it was both informative and interesting.
After the movie, we swung by the grocery store to stock up on food for the rest of the weekend. My sister and I were pretty pumped to find a variety of coffees and flavored hot chocolate available at Kennie’s and we mixed up a cup of salted caramel hot chocolate with French vanilla coffee.
It was a delicious combination at first, but by the time both of us got to the end of our cups we were more than over it. Isn’t it weird how something can go from delicious to disgusting in 2.5 seconds sometimes?
Once our shopping trip at Kennie’s was done, we made sandwiches back at Mimi’s house before heading out in the rain again to see my grandma, Nana, again.
We arrived at Nana’s place a little after 3:30 and hung out with her until dinnertime. I love that we are able to spend time with both of my grandmothers whenever we visit Gettysburg!
Dinner
On our way back to Mimi’s house, we swung by Dave and Jane’s Crabhouse to pick up dinner.
Fresh crabs for all!
As a serious seafood lover, I couldn’t wait to dig into the crabs and we all spent quite a long time at the dinner table, breaking into the crabs and chatting away. It was a great night and a wonderful second day in Pennsylvania!
And I don’t want to jinx things, but it’s finally not raining outside right now!!! Hooray! Hoping for a dry day in Gettysburg today!

Enjoy the rest of your stay in PA. I’m glad the weather finally turned around here so you could enjoy some outdoor time! And I’m definitely one who can get a gas station hot chocolate and hate it by the end of the cup. They’re SO sweet but it’s worth it every once and a while!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I LOVE Jazzercise!!!! I went several times a week my senior year of college with my best friend, I just wish we had more places here in Chicago to take classes. I always go when I’m at home in Kansas City because I got my mom hooked on it; it’s so fun to go to class with her! Actually, I went back to Charleston for my best friend’s (the aforementioned one) wedding and we did a big bachelorette Jazzercise class and it was a blast!

I hope the rest of your weekend is amazing! But I have to ask what you’re wearing because I love your outfit. The whole thing is just so cute!
peanutbutterfingers says
Thank you!! The jacket is Lauren Conrad from Kohl’s, the scarf is Banana Republic, boots are Colin Stewart from Victoria’s Secret and my sweater is from Hautelook! 🙂
Miranda @ Lovely Wife Lovely Life says
I’ve never tried Jazzercise, but it seems like a distant relative of Zumba! 😉 Looks like your day was a blast! I love grocery shopping and grocery shopping with coffee is even better!
Katie says
I have to pop in and say that if Jazzercise and Zumba were relatives, Jazzercise would be the mom, because it’s been around for over 40 years! If you like Zumba, you will LOVE Jazzercise, because it is the original dance-based aerobic workout. 🙂
Kelly says
It’s so nice you get to visit both grandma’s on your trip, it takes two to see mine. Also, I’m insanely jealous of the crabs, I love me some maryland style crabs 😉
Sara @ LovingOnTheRun says
Sounds like you are having a GREAT weekend! Enjoy your time with family 🙂
Shel@PeachyPalate says
Great for you to have some family time! Must be hard living away from them! I’m always like that with French Vanilla…it can just be too strong and overpowering sometimes and kind of sickly but I just love the smell of it and that first taste!
Haley S @Cupcakes and Sunshine says
That is so sweet that that was your parent’s first date 🙂 What a great trip!
Ellie@Fit for the soul says
It’s so wonderful that you girls get to do Jazzercise with your mom! I love how family oriented all of you guys seem to be. 😀 And omgshhhh it must be so cool and weird to be at the spot where your grandparents first had their date!!!
Annie @ The Annie Hall says
Julie you look just like your pops and your sister looks just like your momma! spitting image!
Sammy @ Peace Love and Ice Cream says
I would never think to take Jazzercise – in my head I picture it as a 1980s, middle-aged woman type of workout! But the way you’re describing, it sounds pretty fun!
Glad you’re having a great trip. It’s so cute that your grandmothers live close to each other. To they see each other when you guys aren’t there? My grandparents lived close by and were all very friendly with each other so it was really nice!

As a 24 year-old Jazzercise instructor, I have to pop in and say that Jazzercise has totally evolved with the times, and while we love our amazing history, we are working hard to help younger generations realize that Jazzercise is for everyone! I’m glad that Julie helped you to change your mindset! 🙂
Sammy @ Peace Love and Ice Cream says
Good deal! Thanks for the info Katie! I may have to go check out a class 🙂
Katie says
Great! If you go to Jazzercise.com, and enter your zip code, it will show you all the classes near you 🙂

Just want to pop in for a second and let you know that your site has been doing something weird for the past few weeks. It keeps flashing every couple seconds. I’m on Safari and it’s only happening with your site. So strange!
Katie says
Julie, thank you so much for all of the positive Jazzercise hype lately on the blog! As an instructor and diehard Jazzercise participant since age 15, I find it so refreshing to see a young, fitness forward blogger speaking so highly of our program! We are working really hard to help change people’s image of Jazzercise and help them to realize that we have totally evolved over our 40+ years in business. Thank you, thank you!
Nicole says
Katie, you’re right Jazzercise has come a long way. My mom is also an avid Jazzerciser (she completed her 300th class of the year back in August and looks up classes anytime she travels – even in Rome!) and going to classes when I am visiting her has been a lot of fun. It’s not available in my area (and not really my everyday cup of tea) but I am so thankful that she has found an exercise program she really enjoys!
peanutbutterfingers says
Oh it is MORE than my pleasure! I LOOOVE Jazzercise and think it’s such a fantastic class!
Ashley says
Your parents first date seems straight from the movies itself 🙂 Such a cute, happy couple 🙂 Love it!
Jan @ Sprouts n Squats says
Sounds like the class was a lot of fun!! I love your scarf too I’m going to have to go hit up banana republic for some online retail therapy 😉
Here in Melbourne the weather is stormy and rainy and definitely a movie kind of day too!
Angela says
Yay! Thanks for the Jazzercise shout out! I’m an instructor in Indiana and LOVE the program, but feel like it has a bad rep of being stuck in the 80s. Our program is fresh, fun, and truly a great total body workout! So glad you got to work out with your mom! 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
I totally agree! Jazzercise rocks!!!
Brittany @ proteinandpumps says
Worst weekend ever to visit this area! Ha. I’m sure you enjoyed your time here despite all the rain and flooding. Sorry we couldn’t meet up while you were in town!

Ahh! I grew up in Gettysburg and am actually visiting family here right now. It’s so weird to see someone else’s view of our tiny town 🙂
I currently live in FL too, so it’s a very strange coincidence!

I grew up in Emmitsburg, MD where Dave & Jane’s is located! You have to try Rube’s Crab Shack next time. It is also located in Emmitsburg and is SO much better than Dave and Jane’s! Stavros pizza is a must try, too 🙂
Jen says
Dave and Jane’s! I’ve been there a couple of times and have loved it each time. It’s kind of a halfway point for alot of my family, so we’ll meet there usually once a year. Looks like you had a great trip!!
