Get up and go. That is the key to weekend workouts for me.
If I putter around the house for a few hours or tell myself I’ll workout in the afternoon, there’s a 98 percent chance I won’t workout at all that day.
Last night I went to bed planning to wake up and take Sadie for a run. I awoke with sun streaming in the windows and checked my phone, relieved to see that the temperatures were still in the mid-70s.
Since the temperatures climb quickly in Orlando, I took advantage of the temperate weather and Sadie and I completed our typical five-mile loop.
Some MK & A jams blasted on my iPod, making this run a good one.
We arrived home slightly before 8:30 a.m., ready for breakfast!
Breakfast
Ryan walked in the door from the gym shortly after and we were both feelin’ smoothies for breakfast.
In the mix:
- 1 c. milk
- 1.5 frozen bananas
- 1 heaping scoop vanilla protein powder
- Dash butter and nut extract
- 1 large handful fresh spinach
- Chia seeds (for garnish)
It hit the spot!
Now Ryan is begging me to go on a quick one-mile walk with Sadie to talk about our weekend plans. It’s supposed to rain later today, so I guess front-loading all of Sadie’s exercise for the day might not be a bad thing!
Cait's Plate says
I’m the same exact way. If I have a lazy morning the chances i’ll get off my butt and go workout are pretty slim.
Dawn @ Blonde on a Mission says
I am usually pretty good at setting & keeping my workout time. If I say I’m going at 7 AM, noon or 6 PM, I can stick to it because I end up planning my day around it. But I think having a routine for working out is definitely the key to doing it instead of procrastinating.
And I’m loving that you listen to Mary Kate & Ashley songs 😀 haha. I love listening to all musical songs from Hairspray, Grease, Rent & Mamma Mia.
Cait's a Runnerchick says
great job on the run! i like to start my day off with my workout, it also makes me feel more energized the rest of the day. sort of like the less i do the less i want to do syndrome. 😛
hope sadie is able to get the most out of that walk…get some energy out of those legs before being stuck in the house looking out the window! hopefully u’ll see some baby swans. 🙂
Liv @ The Salty n' Sweet says
I’m always looking up to you because you always have motivation to work out every morning. Do you ever have those days that you just want to relax and NOT do any working out???
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
Oooh yes. I always take at least one day off from the gym each week which really helps. And if I REALLY don’t wanna work out one day, I won’t.
Jenna...lifeinjenneral says
All the time 🙂
Hillary says
I’m the exact same way, Julie. If I don’t work out first thing, it’s NOT happening!
Jenna...lifeinjenneral says
Julie, I read your blog right before bed and then had a dream we went to coffee lol this needs to happen soon!
I’m on vacation right now; it was awesome reading your blog over my carribean breakfast…yay for wifi
The Teenage Taste says
I am the exact same way, especially on the weekends! Come to think of it, I should probably be leaving for my workout right now. 😉
Have a great day!
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
i seriously love that you two get Sadie out for exercise!
And I got up this morning and worked out right away because I’m the same way — the weekend days just seem to get away from me!
Carrie says
im the same way during th week altho on the weeekends i like 2 workout after bfast! extra energy.. which is what ima do today!
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles says
A green monster is on my list too! Way to hit the ground running, Julie! 🙂
Khushboo says
I also prefer to work out first thing on weekends, especially as I can then come home to a lazy breakfast without having to rush to work!
fittingbackin says
Great workout! 98% chance – you are SO right (says the girl puttering around her house talking about “taking a spin class later”…. sigh!)
Emily@RunningPerspective says
your family is the cutestttttt
and i love waking up and getting my workout done in the morning– i feel so accomplished for the rest of the day!
Colleen says
I’m opposite–I have to get up and go work out right away during the week, but I like to lounge a little on the weekends!
Courtney @ girl in the pink says
You are so good about working out on the weekends! The only way I ever do is if I have plans with friends for a hike, a yoga class or something like that!
Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups says
Loved that Orlando weather this morning! It was a nice break from all that heat we’ve been having!
Aine @ Something to Chew Over says
I really enjoy a leisurely Saturday morning so I have a slow breakfast in my PJs! But I always workout before lunch so that it’s done in the first part of the day.
Hayley @ hayley daily says
Nice job on the morning run! I bet Sadie is one happy pup today.
Lynn says
Hi Julie! I love your blog and have been a reader for quite some time! Question: How do you set your Garmin to have four boxes of data, as shown in your picture? Can you select the types of data you want displayed, or is it pre-set? My Garmin is set to only three. I have the same model as you do! Thanks!
peanutbutterfingers says
honestly, i did it more than a year ago, so i have no idea how i did it! i know i played around and looked at the manual/used online tutorials. i wish i could be of more help, but i don’t just want to guess and steer you wrong!
Chelsea says
I think it would be easier for us girls to stick a workout in anywhere, anytime if showering and getting ready was a 10 minutes process like the majority of those lucky guys out there!
Janiek says
I still need to find that exercise switch…..
Erin @ Naturally Addicted says
I agree… working out in the morning on weekends is crucial! I need to buy one of those Forerunners!
BeckyH says
I can’t believe how much exercise your dog needs/is able to do.
When my wiener dog was a puppy, I took him on a 1.5 mile walk. Half way through I bent down to pet him and he fell over and laid on his side. He was through, finished! hah.
He can now walk 1.5-2 miles, but only when he feels like it =) Sometimes we have to carry him because he gets tired 😛
peanutbutterfingers says
haha according to runner’s world magazines, sadie’s breed can handle MARATHON training. nuts, huh?
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
I agree with the get up and go! I don’t necessarily have to get up and go right to the gym.. but I need to get up and go somewhere to make the day productive. Usually I will get up and go to the food store immediately.. and then to the gym. Or else I’d be foodless..and not workout 🙁
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I’m the same way and that did not happen this morning so chances of a workout are slim 😉
Katie says
You said in another post that you don’t spend a lot of money on groceries. Protein powder is really expensive, so I was wondering what kind you buy? Thanks!

Abby says
True Protein is a website where you can build your own custom protein! I made a blend of pea and brown rice protein with natural vanilla flavor and stevia for sweetener. 1 pound cost $16 and that includes shipping! It is awesome!
peanutbutterfingers says
ryan buys our protein in bulk, so it’s cheaper. i’m not sure what website he uses… i think bodybuilding.com or nutraplanet.com. also, when you break the price of protein powder down per serving, it’s not nearly as expensive as you’d think!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I am ALL about working out first thing in the a.m on Saturdays, or else it DOES not get done!
Abby says
Get up and go is the key for me every day! lol.
Bee Goes Bananas says
I’m thinking about buying a Garmin Forerunner 305. Do you like yours? Do you have an advice for someone looking to buy a forerunner?
peanutbutterfingers says
i definitely like it a lot! it’s much bigger than i expected when i ordered it, so be prepared to think it’s gigantic, but it’s actually quite comfy to wear running and tracks everything i want it to – distance, pace, etc.
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
You’ve got me CRAVING a smoothie! Hello lunch..
char @ char on a mission says
Yup…feel ya on the wake up and go thing. Because that was my plan, yet here I am still sitting around making excuses for why I shouldn’t go. That’s a indication that I should go, right? Ahhh, why didn’t I just get it over with this morning like you…I blame bed and food for that lol
Erica @ TheSqueezeBlog says
I wish I had forced myself to get up and workout. Now it is too hot to be outside (already 100 degrees in Tucson) and I’m still in my pjs sitting on the couch. lol.
I did have a smoothie for breakfast though. Yum.
Margo @ Peanut Butter Trees says
It’s true, weekend workouts can be some of the hardest – I immediately slip into relaxation/vacation/lots of excuses mode and it’s tough to get motivated without my regular week day routines. Good job getting out there!
Sarah says
I love being lazy on the weekends 🙂 I usually end up being pretty active because of it! I woke up, went shopping, did a easy workout video, and now I think I’m going to go for a longg walk. Saturdays are the best.
Jaclyn @ Realhealthwife says
I am the exact same way! I got up at 7 this morning to get my workout done. My husband usually doesn’t workout on Saturdays so if I can get it done while he’s still sleeping, its easier that way so I have no distractions!
Lindsay@ In Sweetness and In Health says
Totally have to get my workout done in the morning. Why does motivation seem to decrease as the day goes on? Haha…and with a quick glance your smoothie looks like soft-serve ice cream with sprinkles, yum!
Alaina says
I am definitely the same way where I have to work out in the morning or else it won’t get done. I love running through Harvard Square when there’s almost no one out there. 🙂
Caroline says
You should download “Get Up and Go” by Hanson- yes, the same dreamy trio we were all in love with at some point. Anyways, this song is off their more recent “adult” albums and it’s actually really good!
Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) says
I feel the same way haha. i got up at 8am just to go run before weekend festivities began – I knew i’d never go otherwise today!
Lindsay Loves Veggies says
Yeah, I definitely have to get up and go. If I wait until later, who knows what’s going to happen? It’s so much easier to get it out of the way. Plus, then you feel better all day long!
Laura (Cookies vs. Carrots) says
I agree! I fit in my run first thing this morning too!
Alisa @ Running with Knives says
I totally agree. There will always be more exciting things to do later in the day than working out. Plus, I don’t feel AS guilty about any possible weekend indulgences if I know I got my fit on! (Is it just me, or do you make better choices food-wise if you work out? It’s not the all or nothing approach, but I definitely crave the healthy stuff if work out.)
Amanda Jewell @ Science&Bananas says
same way! in fact, i missed this morning’s workout! 🙁
oh well.. hitting treadmill later and i’ve got pilates tomorrow AM!
Jackie @ that deep breath says
I totally agree with you about workouts. Just get up & do it. I’ve been loving smoothies lately! Ok…I’m kind of obsessed.
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
Interesting, never heard of that extract!! I can never get a workout done early in the morning haha. Completely opposite.
Kelly says
Question: Can you tell me about the chia seeds you use so often? Do they have a taste? How do they contrite nutritionally?
Kelly says
*contribute*
Yolie @ Practising Wellness says
I’m the same 🙂 I love morning workouts, much more than at any other time of the day, and they work for me at weekends because my boyfriend sleeps in, and that way I get to hit up the gym or have a date with my yoga mat, while he’s still sleeping, and it doesn’t get in the way of our together time 🙂 xyx
Marvin The Muscle Maker says
This was not a terribly long post but it was worth making i feel. I like the tipoff you give about the protein shake afterwards.
Everyone keeps talking about how important they are and how helpful they can be.
You just got to find the right one for you and then you can blend it just like you like it.
This is a great motivator to get up and going on those saturday and sunday mornings.
Tamyr says
Had I seen your blog post earlier, I would’ve opted to buy the Forerunner 305. I got the Bodybugg delivered to my home & now it’s completely useless because it doesn’t work in my region so I can’t install the app. It sucks because I paid nearly as much as $300 to get it delivered overseas.
I have the same intent when I scally around and not jump to working out directly. The mojo disappears.
