Today is a day off from the gym! Ryan and I are taking it easy on the workout front this week in preparation for Saturday’s half marathon. We’re leaving tomorrow morning for Savannah and I am already getting jittery… in a good way!
I started to make a packing list as I prepared breakfast this morning which really got me pumped up.
I started with the most important running items in my book: My Garmin and iPod! When I really think about it, my number one slot might actually go to my favorite running socks, though my electronics do keep me motivated in a way a pair of socks never could.
Breakfast
Breakfast was good this morning, but not great.
(Why does cheese always look so leathery once it starts to cool?)
I made myself a cheese, jelly and egg bagelwich on an onion bagel and think I finally discovered a kind of cheese that doesn’t work on this sandwich. Provolone. Bleh.
It could be that the provolone that I used had a “smoke” flavor that I didn’t realize it had until I bit into the bagelwich. I still ate the whole thing, but it wasn’t nearly as delicious as prior jelly and cheese bagelwiches.
Today
My mom left from St. Pete this morning to come pick up Sadie for the weekend and help me with some personal things here in Ocala. I’m really looking forward to spending the day with her but need to buckle down and wrap up a project that’s been quite a time suck for the past two days. I want that baby done and sent and out of my mind!
See ya for lunch!
Question of the Morning
- What is your most important piece of exercise gear (clothing, electronic, etc.)?
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Definitely a good pair of shoes! I’m hoping to get spin shoes for Christmas!
I bet that course will be beautiful!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
This is going to sound weird, but I’d say good hair elastics are really important!! I can’t stand when they start to stretch and my ponytail gets all loose. I know it’s a little thing, but it’s one of my pet peeves! Enjoy your day off! 🙂
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers says
I was going to say shoes, but after seeing Angela’s suggestion, I too choose ponytail holders. I’ve had them break on my mid-run, so I’d put an extra on my wrist.
Faith says
I second, er, third that! I have super thick hair and have such a hard time finding elastic ponytail holders that can keep up. They are a workout MUST!
Amber K says
Me too! Essential.
Stephanie@Snacking on Sunshine says
I totally agree with Claire – shoes make the biggest difference ever. And a hair clip. I have longish bangs but I need to rock the pony/hair clip {think those hair pouff hair clips all the italian girls wore in high school – hawt} or else my bangs get in my face and I get all hot and bothered.
Diana says
SHOES! Everything else could probably be replaced in a pinch, but can you imagine trying to find the right shoes in a new town, purchase them and break them in on race day?
Enjoy the day with your mama!
Aine @ Something to Chew Over says
Shoes for me too – I wouldn’t get far without them! And although socks aren’t exactly exciting, a good pair really helps.
Khushboo says
My iPod is my most important exercise gear…it’s both my motivation and entertainment! Have a great day with your madre!
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
I would always say my iPod is my #1 accessory, but I’d be kinda lost without my Garmin.
Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) says
A good sports bra- so important!
Have a fun day- I love mommy daughter time 🙂
Katie @ Raisins&Apples says
I need to have my earphones at the gym, so I can zone out to the news or whatever talkshow happens to be on!
Kathleen @ Ocean Full of Lemons says
That’s always such a weird feeling before a race – half excitement half nerves. You guys will do great!
And my favorite accessory right now is my half glove/half mitten combo. It’s cold here in PA and these are a life saver! I blogged about them here: http://oceanfulloflemons.wordpress.com/2011/10/28/ninja-runner/
Sabrina @ Coffee With Sabrina says
I have to agree with the ipod, but not to forget a great sports bra too!!
My cousin is running that marathon this weekend too. You’ll do great!!
Nathan Miller says
Goodluck on the car mirror kiddo…guess it could have been the whole car….but shoes…a great run starts with your feet and legs and a good pair of shoes are a must
Brandi @ The Vitamin Bee says
My Garmin is #1! I guess my hot pink shoes and compression socks come in a close second though! 😉
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
My shoes and ipod are tied for first! I’m sure you’ll do awesome in your half – can’t wait to hear how it goes!
Amanda says
One of my most important pieces of exercise gear is my padded seat for the spin bike. I know people always say “you’ll get used to it”, but that feeling is not something I want to get used to! Ouch.
Kat @ Balance & Spice says
Hey Julie, so psyched for your half marathon – hope you have a fun and fast race.
I have a xantham gum question – I started using it after reading about your yummy think smoothie recipes, and it’s great (after the first time I used it, in which I used too much and turned my smoothie into a massive gum heap). However, I find that it leaves a gummy film in the blender right after using it. Do you have any ideas on how to get that out? It doesn’t respond all that well to scrubbing. Any advice would be so helpful. 🙂
Kat @ Balance & Spice says
That was supposed to be “thick” smoothie recipes, not “think.”;-)
Gen says
One of my most important pieces of exercise gear is my shuffle…..music helps me more than anything else to power through tough workouts!
Jodi says
Yeah, the smoked cheese is always iffy! It seems like you are constantly going on fun vacations; I’m totally jealous! My most important piece of exercise gear would probably be my running shoes.
Marla says
Definitely my iPod and my garmin! I can’t run without music but I really wish I could.
I’m looking forward to reading your new playlist!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
definitely my iPod and garmin (like everyone else!) i’ve gotten better at running without music (some races in chicago don’t allow headphones), but i definitely prefer it. and i feel totally naked without my garmin!
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
Definetly my Ipod! I needs my tunes 😀
Lindsey says
My iPod! Not sure I would be able to run a race without it, it is my motivation!
Good luck, you guys will do great!!
Ashley @ Good Taste Healthy Me says
100% need my ipod. Without music I totally don’t push myself!
Brittany says
I definitely love having my garmin and phone for music but I COULD live without. I always need extra hair ties and ofcourse good shoes and socks!
Colleen @ Jimmy Choos on the Treadmill says
Music is a must for me!
Traci says
a great fitting pair of workout capris!
that’s funny about that provolone – i actually am the opposite – more of a fan of provolone in those sandwiches than muenster!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I’d say music, good hair elastics (so my hair doesn’t fall out), and my ipod are MUSTS.
Wahoo for fun races 🙂
Heather says
I am SO SAD I had to cancel savannah due to illness. was so looking forward to seeing my blends again and running my 10th half and working the expo. 🙁 Have a GREAT time!
I have to have my garmin. I could cry if I didn’t bring it.
Lindsay @ In Sweetness and In Health says
I absolutely need my ipod! And a good pair of shoes :). Hope you have so much fun with your mom today!
Kara says
My favorite piece of running gear is my Under Armour underwear. It’s so comfortable and is made of a dry-wick material that dries sweat fast! They come in thongs too!
Faith @ For the Health of It says
I use my blackberry for music – can’t run without the tunes!
Emily says
Good luck tomorrow! Hopefully you can spend some quality time with your mom!
Liz says
My shoes & my iPod! 🙂
Lindsay says
For races, it should always be SHOES! I worked for Team In Training for 4 years and more than once I had a participant fly to another city for a race and forget their shoes…never a good situation. Always wear or pack your shoes in your carry-on!!
Katie @ livehalffull says
I would have to agree with you, I cannot run without my Garmin! Its amazing how addicted I have gotten to it. Otherwise, how would I know my pace and distance at all times!?
Lisa@thedailyrundown says
My most important piece of gear is my phone. I use it for my music and I use it for my pace (runkeeper) because I don’t have a Garmin.
I wish I was running rock and roll Savannah. I’m in Atlanta and thought about signing up, but my first full marathon was last Sunday, I thought I would need more time.
Have a great Time!!!
Cat @Breakfast to Bed says
I could say something like shoes or garmin, but really? iphone.
Rebecca @ Miss Magnolia Munches & Moves says
Savannah is going to be awesome! I wish I was going!!! I’m so picky about running gear when it comes to long runs. I must have the right shoes, socks, pants, top, sports bra, panties, and of course i pod. When you are running for 2 hours straight, it is important to be comfortable!
Giulia @ Tutupa's Lab says
I would say ipod and a good hair elastic!
Becky @ Fit Chick on the Fly says
My running favorites are quite similar to yours minus the Garmin. But hopefully after xmas I can add the garmin to my running fave’s! 🙂
Nancy (Beyoutiful Fitstyle) says
My sneakers because I have bad feet and definitely a head band to keep my hair out of my face! Those would definitely be my top two!
lauren says
I can actually handle running without my garmin and ipod, but I always take my spibelt! It makes it easy to carry my phone (which has backup music/gps), keys, gum and tissues. I even wear it for races, I lost my husband for over an hour at a 5K last fall and I don’t want a repeat of that!
Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun says
All I have to say to this post is…see you soon!!!!
dana a. says
my iphone is my most important because it plays music! i don’t watch tv when i am on the treadmill, so music it is.
chelsea says
Clothing is most important for me for sure! I chaff pretty bad sometimes so if I don’t have good running shorts that I’m screwed pretty much and the whole run goes to H-E-Double hockey sticks lol.
Brittany *Sparkles* says
Everyone is so practical… I guess shoes and pants would be pretty important!!! I was going to go with my phone though bc I use it for music and to GPS my run…
Lynn Seuberling says
Mine is my ipod. There have been times that I would go the gym for a class and find out the class is cancelled. Hence, me on the treadmil with no music. Pure Torture. Now I always bring my ipod or phone just in case so I always have something to listen to. Oh and a really good headband. Nothing like sweating with hair in your face. YUCK
Ashley O. @ The Vegetable Life says
I never run with music so my most prized piece of gear is my sneakers that I LOVE!
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
I am SO with you on the garmin and the ipod. I could forget EVERYTHING else. Except then I might be running naked.. and some other might have a problem with is. But I would FEEL more naked without the garmin and ipod!
Beth says
Thorlo socks! The BEST! I sort of flipped out on my husband when I saw him wearing my Thorlos to work last week. Not my proudest moment, but those socks are pure race gold for me!
