I love ginger.
And no, I’m not pregnant. Every time I blog about something with ginger in it, the pregnancy rumors start a-flyin’!
For as much as I love ginger, I don’t think I’ve ever used ginger root! I gravitate toward ground ginger because it’s always available in the spice rack in our pantry. I’m not really a meal planner, so I cook on the fly and use whatever I have available and that has always been ground ginger.
Earlier this week, I bought ginger root because I wanted to incorporate it into a kale-based smoothie/juice. I still haven’t purchased a juicer but have been making green drinks based around Brittany’s green lemonade recipe. Since the pulp remains in the drink, it’s thicker and has more fiber than green juice and I love the way Brittany’s recipe can be adapted. I’ve added carrots, apples and oranges to her recipe and have loved every combination so far.
Today I added ginger to her original recipe and it was delicious and gone in no time at all!
Along with my green drink, I reheated leftovers from dinner from last night for lunch today.
- Amberjack (Caught by my dad!) seasoned with Old Bay
- Zucchini sautéed in olive oil
- Mixed frozen vegetables (Carrots, corn, green beans)
A winning combination!
Question of the Afternoon
- Do you make green juice or green smoothies? What is your favorite combination?
When it comes to green juice, I love the addition of ginger, beets or carrots.

I’m just getting back into green juices! My favorite: kale, lemon, apple, and ginger 🙂

I’ve never used ginger root because I always have the ground ginger readily available, but I should probably try using it sometime to compare the taste. I love green smoothies, and that one looks delicious!

Hey Julie! I was just curious how much coffee do you consume everyday? Also if you don’t drink much do you feel very stable with your energy throughout the day or do you feel depressed without coffee?

I have a green smoothie pretty much every morning but one of my favorites has actually been fresh ginger, cucumber, ice, frozen spinach and almond milk (+xanthan gum, of course). I added a little sweetener and a little vanilla, I think. The cucumber/ginger combination is so cool and refreshing while just being a tiny bit sweet. It’s a beautiful color, too 🙂

fresh ginger is sooo much better! you can peel it and freeze it, so it doesn’t go bad 🙂 i grate mine with a cheese grater or lemon zester instead of mincing it. when it’s frozen, this is even easier!

I make green smoothies with spinach all the time. Current favorites include my Banana Vanilla Power and Chocolate Cherry Doughboy smoothies.

I always throw spinach or kale in my protein smoothies.
I use greek yogurt, almond milk, chocolate peanut butter protein powder and a variety of frozen berries. I’ll have to try ginger with frozen mango and maybe no protein powder. I keep it in the freezer for recipes so I have it!

Hang on, what’s this about ginger & pregnancy cravings? I love ginger, but didn’t realise there was a correlation (and I’m definitely not pregnant!)
