When it comes to pancakes, I’m usually a protein pancake kind of gal, but today I was feeling way too lazy to clean the immersion blender I typically use when I make protein pancakes with oats.
Yes, today’s recipe was born out of my desire to keep breakfast clean up to a minimum. Whatever works!
I made a batch of whole wheat pancakes and amped up the flavor a bit with pumpkin and honey and the end result tasted like fall on a plate. The perfect lazy Sunday morning pancakes… on a Friday.
- Such a good breakfast!

Workout
Before breakfast, Ryan and I headed to the gym for a Friday morning workout that began with my 25 minute elliptical interval workout. I followed up my cardio session with “Workout C” from Tina’s Best Body Boot Camp.
I definitely felt the burn and I’m hoping my muscles aren’t crazy-sore for tomorrow’s race. I made sure to do a bit of stretching at the end of the workout, including some of my favorite hip stretches since I’ve experienced some light hip pain since late last week. (<— Hip stretch number five is a personal favorite.) The pain is nothing crazy by any means, but since I’ve had hip issues in the past, I’ve been a hip-stretching maniac for the past few days.

Question of the Morning
- What is your all-time favorite stretch?
I love the pigeon pose. It feels incredible on my hips. I also really like the plow pose because I feel like a kindergartener playing on the floor while simultaneously stretching my back.
Sabrina says
A day can never be bad that starts with (pumpkin) pancakes!
Amanda @ Run Principessa says
You win. Every other blog post today will pale in comparison. YUM! I didn’t get to read along with you this month, but I’m keeping an eye on November’s pick so I can hopefully join in!
alyssa - life a la wife says
I was hoping you had a pancake recipe up today and boom you even made it a pumpkin one.
Happy Friday!
Amanda @ Romancing the Unusual says
I’ve never been a huge pancake fan, but I think I’m going to have to try this little recipe out! They look GOOD!
Megan says
Most jealous of your Friday breakfast!
Alexa @ Southern Living, Our Way says
Those pancakes look so fluffy and delish!! I think I just found my Saturday morning breakfast recipe 🙂
Pigeon pose is my all-time favorite hip stretch. My hips {and, as a result, my lower back} get tight so easily and pigeon pose loosens everything right up!
Meghan @ After the Ivy League says
Yum! Who says non-protein pancakes are only for Sunday mornings? Friday’s a great day to treat yourself to an extra delicious breakfast. Especially when pumpkin is involved!
Penny says
JULIE I have a request – would you be able to rank all the books you’ve read so far in order from “must-read” to “meh”? Or you can just leave the “meh” books off. Looking for a book to read but don’t know where to start!
Thanks 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
YES! I love this idea!!! Right off the bat, I can highly recommend Sarah’s Key and Divergent. They’re two of my favorites! Violets of March was really good, too, if you’re looking for a quick read!
Penny says
Thank you!!!
Michelle @ Eat Move Balance says
Funny–you listed my two favorite stretches ever: pigeon and plow pose. 🙂 Great minds think alike!
Molly says
Downward dog may be my all-time favorite stretch. I also really like doing bridges on a stability ball.
Anele @ Success Along the Weigh says
I’ll take some of those pancakes please! 🙂
My new favorite stretch is bending down like I’m doing a lower back stretch (head close to the floor with legs shoulder width apart). Then reach to my left ankle with my right hand and pull back on the ankle so I stretch my shoulder blades. This makes a major difference in my sore factor after a strength workout!
Kim @ Living, Laughing & Losing says
I’m so making these on Sunday morning! 🙂 Thanks for sharing.
Natalie @ Free Range Human says
I love camel and tree pose. Recently, I discovered child pose and that one is pretty awesome as well.
WellHeeledRunner says
I like to stretch out on the sofa with a glass of pinot grigio…but I’m not sure that counts…;)
Liz @ IHeartVegetables says
Those pancakes sound amazing!!!
stevie says
hey julie, was wondering if you changed your posting on the blog to twice a day? just curious!
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
I love the pigeon pose and I like just stretching my calves in a downward dog type position, one at a time. And I need to write my review for that book, I liked it!
Rachel Boller - Busy Mama says
Pigeon pose is one of my favorite poses too! I love doing it with my front leg on the bed at night to get a good hip stretch in before going to sleep. Butterfly pose is another favorite – I feel like I’m 5 years old in gymnastics again!
Khushboo says
Downward dogs rOck my world!
Michelle says
Thank you the receipe.. and my husband thanks you too! I am willing to try anything that has pumpkin in it!! He gets tired of the ones I make now and this will be a welcomed change.
Jess @ JessieBear What Will You Wear says
jaysus julie. those pancakes look TOO good…. second breakfast for me?
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
You’re a pancake pro. I’m seriously so impressed with your ability to come up with new pancake recipes! Teach me your ways! Haha.
As far as hip stretches go, I’m a huge fan of the lying hip/glute stretch, since it’s the only one that’s actually ever done anything for my hips. I think my favorite stretch of all time, though, is one I learned through a yoga DVD. You stick your arms out in front of you with your elbows bent at a 90-degree angle so your fingertips are pointing up. Then you cross one elbow over the other (so, say, your left elbow is in the crook formed between the upper half of your right arm and the lower half of your right arm since it’s bent and all) and clasp your hands. Then you lift your arms up and push them away from your body. It stretches between your shoulders and it’s INCREDIBLE. (#3 here: http://99u.com/tips/6999/6-Simple-Yoga-Stretches-for-Daily-De-Stressing if you’re looking for a better explanation of what I’m getting at)
Lindsey says
I love the glute stretch where you place your leg across the other while pulling up on the bottom leg (sorry sort of hard to explain). I also love rolling my ITbands (painful but effective)
Have a great Friday:)
Annette@FitnessPerks says
Mmmm those pancakes look awesome!
And yes, I need to write a review of the book!
Jennifer says
I did the exact same workout this morning!!
Irene says
what race are you running tomorrow?
Jen says
Those pancakes look so yummy! I love pumpkin flavored things! Have you ever tried pumpkin bagels (I believe Nature’s Own makes them)? They are sooo delicious!
Claire @ Keeping Up With Claire says
I love the butterfly stretch. My legs have been so sore lately, and I can’t get enough stretching in. How often do you foam roll? It really helps me a LOT, so give it a try tomorrow if you’re still feeling sore!
Rebecca Dubas says
I think these may be my lunch instead of breakfast!!
Shana says
I love plow pose once I get into it but I always get anxiety going into the pose. I have this irrational fear that I’m going to snap my neck or do a backwards somersalt or somthing.
Diana @ Sneakers2Sandals says
1. making those pancakes asap
2. i love the font combo in your graphic. how did you get your ‘pumpkin pancakes’ part to be filled in like that? i’ve been trying to figure it out but i can’t!
Melissa says
What are your thoughts in regards to NYC still holding the marathon when so many people have lost their homes and NY/NJ is still in deep devastation? I’m surprised you haven’t mentioned anything about the storm but please keep us in your prayers.
Tara says
Your pancakes look great! The last batch I made was a flop…oh well! I am running a race tomorrow too, so I made sure to attend a yoga class this morning. I love the plow and the pigeon as well, but my favorite stretches recently have been all sorts of shoulder openers!
Sarah says
Mmmmmm pancakes… I think I know what I’m having for dinner now 🙂
Verenique B says
how many servings does that recipe make???
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
Oh I hope your hip feels better soon Julie! I also love stretching ’em with this position (works for me!): stand in a wiiide lunge like position and put your hands together way overhead. Then slowly stretch side to side and back. 🙂 Feels really good!
Tina @ Best Body Fitness says
I think if I had read this post before I ate lunch I would have so had these instead. They look delicious!
Ashlee says
Any idea when the next boot camp will be? I want to join in next round!
Michelle says
Pigeon pose…I’m all about the hip stretches myself as it’s were I suffer if I don’t watch myself! I make a vegan pumpkin pancake with various different flours but the almost the same ingredients quantities…same flour, same milk (I use almond) but I use 2/3 cup pumpkin puree and leave out the egg as I’m vegan! Just if you ever run out of eggs! 🙂
Ellen @ Wannabe Health Nut says
They look so fluffy, yum! Ohhh I have so many favorite stretches. Pigeon for hips and full wheel + downward facing dog for everything else!
jen says
I don’t eat bacon anymore, but growing up we always microwaved it. Easiest way to cook bacon.
Also, i’d try this method from Iowa Girl Eats (iowagirleats.com) ….seems fairly easy, little risk of grease burns and according to her makes it super crispy:
Lay cold strips of bacon on a non-stick sprayed cooling rack over a foil-lined baking sheet then pop it in a cold oven, turn the heat to 400 degrees, and bake for 15-20 minutes or until crispy. This gradual-heat baking method renders out a TON of fat, which leaves the bacon super crispy. Drool. Drool, drool.
Bek @ Crave says
They look good, if they’re anything like your protein pancakes they will be. I’m a big fan of calve, hamstring and hip stretches. I like the hip stretch where you’re on the ground and pushing forward!
Christina @ The Beautiful Balance says
YUM! These look so fluffy and tasty. So many bloggers are testing my will power by posting pictures of delicious pancakes and french toast!
em @ simplypresent says
Those pancakes are mouth-watering!
I’m a huge fan of calf stretches (any) since mine are always so tight!
Merel says
Hi Julie,
I made the pancakes this morning for me and my mom after my first run ever(!!!) they tasted delicious 🙂
Maia says
These pancakes were delicious & a HUGE hit w/ my hubby! I used almond milk instead of regular milk (don’t like milk, so I never have it on hand) & had to cook them on a medium flame (a 6 on my gas burner), low-medium was too low. Thanks for all of your wonderful recipes & workouts!
Nikki @ Road To Less Cake says
Your pancakes look really really tasty and healthy.
