After Sadie’s intense trash talking this morning, I decided to suck it up and brave a run in the crazy heat.
St. Pete may be one of my favorite places to run in the world.
You can run along the water for miles and watch as fish jump and dolphins come up for air (seriously!) and there are always a bunch of other people running and biking which I find really motivating.
The only problem? From May through September the weather is H-O-T. If you don’t get your workout done before 8 a.m., the heat and humidity can be too intense to handle.
For some reason the thought of working out in a gym today made me cringe. I was in the mood to be outside, even if the sun was intense.
I knew Sadie would welcome some exercise, so I leashed her up and we completed 5 miles of running/walking around the pier in downtown St. Petersburg.
Physically, the run didn’t feel too hard, but the heat definitely slowed me down. I was also very aware of Sadie’s reaction to the heat, so we took quite a few water breaks and even sat under a shady tree for a few minutes about three quarters of the way through our run.
Sadie can handle the distance of a long run (she did every long run of my last half marathon training plan with me), but the heat gets to her.
Even though I was a hot mess at the end of our run/walk, I was really glad that I got out there. Outdoor cardio exercise is so much more entertaining than plugging away at the gym on a treadmill or an elliptical to me.
Snack + Lunch
When Sadie and I arrived home, I immediately ate a mini Reese’s peanut butter cup while plating a bowlful of crisp and cool grapes.
Mmm.
No grapes for Miss Sadie though. Grapes + Dogs = Bad idea! Did you know that grapes/raisins when ingested by dogs can lead to kidney failure?
I think Sadie subconsciously knew that she shouldn’t eat grapes because before Ryan and I knew that they were dangerous for dogs, we would toss her a grape and she never knew how to eat them. She’d roll them around in her mouth and spit them out.
After showering and working for another couple of hours, my mom was a sweetheart and decided to make us a nice sit down lunch! She made a batch of her homemade chicken noodle soup which we enjoyed along with tuna salad and crackers.
My mom’s soup recipe is my all-time favorite. It’s so simple, but simply delicious.
She changes it up from time to time by adding different vegetables or noodles, but the essence of the soup is always the same. I had two bowlfuls and am now quite full.
Time to knock back a few more hours of work. We’re hoping to possibly head to IKEA later tonight before RYAN gets here! I can’t wait to see that handsome fella.
I think Sadie will pass out from excitement when he walks through the door.
That’s really awesome that you got Sadie to do your half marathon long runs with you too! My dog Max is a little poodle-yorkie, so I’m not sure that he would be quite as down as Sadie was…
haha probably not… the crazy thing is that right when we get home from our runs, sadie goes straight to her toy bin and wants to play fetch.
Your Sadie-captions literally make me laugh out loud every single time. Hilarious and adorable.
thank you! 🙂 they’re my favorite part of writing a post. i swear her expressions practically write them for me.
I’m impressed by your ability to brave the heat! I would chicken out and choose the gym any day over 80 degrees.
Your captions on Sadie’s pictures always crack me up!
Ha my dog moseley did the sane thing before we knew not to give them to her. I even took a video I thought it was so funny. It’s true what they say about dogs bein very smart! Or at least Sadie and Moseley are!
How is it that moms make the very best soups? Nothing makes me feel better inside and out than a bowl of soup made by my mother 🙂
I hear you on the heat– I almost made like Sadie and laid out in some shade this morning on my run. It’s like the air is thicker somehow!
I’m sure Sadie won’t hold Ryan’s absence against him 🙂
Way to go Julie and Sadie! 🙂 It’s been hot, hot, hot in Orlando, too. It sure can make running miserable.
Enjoy Ikea!
Your Sadie captions crack me Up!!! I am really considering getting a forerunner….seeing how many calories your burning/distance seems like such a good motivation to keep going!
I adore St. Pete! My mom used to have annual conferences down there and I would always tag along for the free vacation. 😉 Love it there!
I might make your mom’s chicken soup this weekend! I’ve been sick for a week already and can’t go back to work until Tuesday… This looks like it could make me feel much, much better! (especially with Irene coming to town!)
i hope you get well soon!
also, i totally read your comment as “animal conferences” at first instead of “annual” and i was like, “COOL! i wonder what her mom does!?”
Ha! That would be far more interesting than banking! 🙂
And thanks for wishing me well. <3
I love the Sadie captions! Moms & Dads always make the best food. I’ll take a mom/dad cooked meal over a restaurant meal any day
I had no idea that grapes were not healthy for a dog! Thanks for sharing. My lab did the same thing. He just rolls it around and spit it out. After a few minutes I just threw it away. I figured he wasn’t a fan!
glad you had a good run today! looks like a pretty area!
Your dog is super cute. My husband and I plan on getting a lab when we get a house, but I fall more in love with Sadie every post you write lol. I want a dog that will go on runs with me. Is Sadie real hyper? And do you ever worry about her hips when she gets older since you take her on runs? I hear conflicting things about dogs and runs.
yes she is CRAZY hyper. but in the best way. 🙂 we love her to death. if you’re looking for a dog to run with, vizslas a great. an article in runner’s world said they can even train for a marathon with you (as long as you work them up to it).
Lovin’ the Sadie quotes, as always 🙂
Wow good for you! I never would have survived that long in heat like that!!
I can’t imagine eating hot soup after a hot run. But if it’s as good as you say, I’m sure I could manage.
And your “Sadie quotes” crack me up.
I am CRACKING UP and Sadie’s captions!
I love all of the commentary that you have been adding to the pictures of Sadie! It never fails to crack me up!!!!
The Sadie quotes get me every time!!
the heat here is INSANE! (i’m across the bridge, in tampa). i took my dog, dexter, out for a 2 mile walk after an 8 mile run (for me) last saturday. i thought he was going to die. (he’s a chocolate lab mix) he’s super hyper so it was SO weird to see him to SO drained from the heat! i lvoe florida, but our summer weather – that’s year round – makes training so ridiculously tough!
Yes, yes I DO know that grapes and (raisens) are toxic to dogs. In fact, i had a horrible experience yesterday w/ all of that (thankfully we figured out none were ingested, tho!) when Happy decided to go at my swag back yesterday morning. Holyheartstoppingjesus. I’ve never been so scared in my life. Thankfully, the vet said nothing she ate would harm her (two granola bars–none w/ raisens, and a bag of nuts). She’s been her bouncing rediculous self the ENTIRE time, too. I swear, this dog is made out of pure sugar! (And now oats, honey and nuts).
omg how scary!! i’m so glad she’s okay!
Great job getting your run done. It really is so much more enjoyable to run outside than on the treadmill!
And I totally feel your pain with the heat. I think I’ve complained about it in almost every one of my running posts! Just a few more months til we have some beautiful weather though!!
Looks like a such a beautiful day for a run – despite the heat!
I’m amazed that she did all your long runs with you! Sounds like the perfect training partner to me! (her expressions and what you write are so funny 😛 )
I love grapes. We buy a whole bag and they’re gone in two days. It’s impossible to control myself to just a few. 🙂
You know in that Hot Mess post you give away that you used to workout at YMCA?! Not that it matters now but I don’t think I ever noticed that before 😉
ah! amateur mistake! 🙂
I always get a kick out of your Sadieisms but today I legit started giggling out loud reading your last picture caption! 🙂
Your Sadie comments are a riot.
My dogs did the same thing with grapes! And they love practically every veggie and fruit! Must be a puppy instinct. 😉
That’s amazing that you see dolphins during a run, much better than the dirt and cactus here in Arizona!
LOL you’re on fire with the Sadie captions today!!! And tell your mom her soup looks delicious! Your St Pete description is majorly appealing to me right now. Maybe I should move…. 😛
Can you please do a whole series of funny Sadie pics with thought bubbles? Love them haha.
ok, that was a weird and disturbing typo…that was supposed to say “crack up” not “crap up”
haha 🙂
I also don’t know how my reply posted above my comment! oh well…apparently i’m computer-impaired today.
i should! that would be so fun!
I swear, I crap up at your Sadie captions so funny. She looks so cute and worried in that 2nd Sadie pic. You got urself one adorable pooch!
“stop making me your beard” oh sweet jeebus. I make my dog say very inappropriate things when I anthropomorphize her in my head-glad to see sadie does the same.
That last picture of Sadie is so funny. Love it.
Good for you to go on your run outside! I am from Arizona, so I can understand the dry heat, but I’m sure you got a combo of humidity and high temps! Whew, strong work!
People underestimate the impact of visual stimuli during a run. I live in DC and can run for MILES around the National Mall/memorials. I did a 6 mile run last weekend that seemed like a breeze because I had so many visual distractions!
My cocker spaniel used to reject grapes, too — I’d find them on the floor in another room long after I thought she ate them. Guess she was smarter than me about what she should eat!
Well, maybe not. There WAS that time she got into a box of Valentine chocolates … clearly she didn’t know that chocolate was dangerous! Luckily she didn’t get sick, but I was scared to death when I saw what she had done.
LOVE the photo and caption of Sadie. Her expressions make me laugh and miss my own puppy while i’m here at work. Good thing its FRIDAY!!!! 🙂
I love your Sadie thoughts, I think dog people can really relate to them. I often find myself talking for my dog to other people. Then I catch myself and think about how they must think I am some crazy dog lady!
I did the same on Monday morning- ran/walked outdoors in the scorching heat but I sure enjoyed the endorphins(and sweat) post-run!
LOVE the Sadie comments in this post! You could give lolcatz a run for its money with those!
your Sadie comments are killing me! too funny.
Oh my gosh, your Sadie comments today are HILARIOUS 😀 They are always funny, but today I feel like they are EXTRA funny! & have you tried frozen grapes?? They are my favorite way to eat grapes- so good!
& Your Mom’s chicken soup looks DELICIOUS! Love the shell pasta- YUM!
I feel ya with the heat! I’ve been getting my runs in before 7:00 AM. I give my lab, Lola, a break from running in the summer. She gets too hot. But you can definitely see she is packing on some pounds!
The dog thought bubbles are HILARIOUS today!
I felt the same way yesterday! I wasn’t planning on running but when I took the bus home that went along the lakefront (in Chicago) I was so jealous of everyone out there in the sun that I had to go! Ended up running 4 miles! And that soup looks really good! I’ll have to try making my own soups this fall. My favorite chicken noodle ever is actually from Costco! Such good stuff…
Running outside beats running inside on the treadmill anyday!
I love the soup of your mom’s! Can she ship me some? I just like how simple it seems, I’m going to have to try tha one out ASAP! 🙂 Good cold or hot?
actually is is shockingly good cold, too!
Your captions always make me smile. 🙂 Thank you.
I used to visit St. Petersburg when I would visit my grandparents in Bradenton. I love that part of Florida.
Have you been to concerts at the Van Wezel?
I love the Sadie captions in this post! 🙂
My vizsla loves running with me too, but I stopped taking her on runs with me about a month ago because it has just been too hot for her. She was doing the same thing as Sadie – just stopping anytime she found shade. My vet told me that I should only be running her really early (like 6 am) or later in the evenings because since dogs can’t sweat they are at a greater risk of having a heat stroke or even a heart attack. I live in Jacksonville, so it gets super hot here! We still take long walks together, but I think we both miss our runs. When I go run without her she looks pissed when I get back, like she knows I left her behind. I’m looking forward to some cooler weather so I can get my running buddy back! 🙂 Wish we lived closer so we could take our crazy pups to the park!
oh my gosh these Sadie captions had my hysterical. My mother is a crazy dog lady and forewarned us about all the foods dogs can’t have but I don’t think it would’ve mattered considering if it’s a fruit or vegetable, Ginger won’t even look at it. So picky!
i absolutely love said pics w/commentary. she cracks me up! 🙂
now i’m totally craving tuna salad and soup! thanks.
