I got my braces off!!! 😀
(The cup I’m holding is the awesome eco-friendly reusable coffee cup from my orthodontist that I got back in December. LOVE it. Best promotional item everrr.)
Bright and early this morning I headed over to my orthodontist’s office to get my braces off!
For those of you who are new to the zee blog, I’ve been going through Invisalign (clear braces) treatment since April 2009 and now, 15 months later, I’m D-O-N-E!
I can’t help but remember the days when one of my friends from junior high or high school got their braces off.
“My teeth feel so slick and slippery!”
They always seemed so happy and relieved to no longer be a metal mouth.
Though I never had a “metal mouth,” I am happy that I will no longer have “attachments” on my teeth that stick out awkwardly. I’m happy that I will no longer have to brush two sets of teeth (my real ones and my aligners) every day.
Just in case any of you out there are considering Invisalign, I do want to add that overall my experience was very positive. It probably helps that my orthodontist was basically the jam and promised me she would work with me until I was 100 percent satisfied.
As far as pain and discomfort are concerned, I honestly experienced very little. Overall, I’d highly recommend Invisalign to anyone who is a candidate (unfortunately Invisalign is not right for everyone, such as those patients with serious crowding, etc.).
Workout + Breakfast
Before high-tailing it to my orthodontist’s office, I hit the gym to take my usual 5:45 a.m. BodyPump class.
It was a doozy! I’m not sure why, but I’m really feelin’ the song played during the squat track. It’s so flippin’ catchy!
After pumpin’ it up, I headed home to shower and make myself a super-speedy breakfast.
On the menu today was a banana and a veggie bacon and cheese English muffin sandwich made with MorningStar Farms veggie bacon strips and a wedge of Laughing Cow light original Swiss cheese.
“Git in mah belly!!!”
Question of the Day
If you had braces, do you remember the day you got your braces off? How did it feel?
Jessica @ How Sweet says
I totally remember because it was 3 days before high school started! It was the perfect timing and I felt so much more confident!
Gracie @ Girl Meets Health says
Ohh, Invisalign! I was going to say, I don’t remember seeing braces on you?!
I’ve never had braces. I did/do have a retainer because my teeth needed a few adjustments but weren’t bad enough to spend a ton of money on braces. It’s actually kind of embarrassing that I still wear a retainer to bed, hahaha (although, the one for my top teeth is clear like invisalign!)
LiveForTheRun says
That time flew by! Your teeth totally feel slimy, I don’t know how you managed that banana, lol. Best have plans to show off those gems this weekend!
The day I got my braces off was in like middle school, I probably wanted to find some poor 15 year-old to make out with. A true celebration.
Courtney says
Oh my gosh yes – I got them in 8th grade, had them taken off freshman year of H.S. It felt so strange – definitely had the smooth, slimy feeling that you were talking about!
christina says
yay for no more braces!! mine were slippery and slimy feeling after i got them off too. i had the metal kind…and i never wore my retainer (LOST 3 OF THEM!) and now i have one. i’m supposed to wear it everyday to push back one of my front teeth that had started to kick out. i’m so bad at wearing it though…guess i’ll go put it in..thanks for the reminder. happy friday 🙂
homecookedem says
Oh yes, I remember it all! I got braces in 6th grade and then was so relieved to get them off in 8th grade!! It felt so weird and I felt my teeth with my tongue for probably the entire next week. But then I had to wear a retainer at night… ugh.
Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman says
Honestly, I couldn’t even tell you had braces. Man, I wish there was such a thing as Invisalign when I was in high school. Class pictures would have been so much better.
I remember when i got mine off that my teeth felt slippery, but also that my lips felt weird. They didn’t stick out as much and my whole mouth felt strangely not like my own.

I got my braces off during my sophomore year of high school and surprisingly it was the most painful experience of my entire two-year brace-face career! I don’t know why, but my teeth hurt SO much after the dentist plucked those metal suckers off – way more than any time that I had gotten them tightened or changed or anything. Weird.
Congrats on getting yours off! I’m glad you had a good experience with Invisalign, and your smile looks wonderful!
bubblegumgymkat says
Oooh I had Invisaline too..I loved them..they did wonders! Your teeth look great!!
Mellissa says
I had braces in 6th and 7th grade and then a whole slew of embarrassing retainers! I was so excited when I was finally done.
Rebecca says
I had braces for 4 years! During that time I had four teeth pulled as well, my teeth were BAD! I could not stop running my tongue over my teeth the day they finally came off, it was glorious 🙂
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
congratulations!!! i had braces for 6 years (hell) and when i got them of i cried of happiness! it’s so amazing…i’m so excited for you!
Jennifer says
yah congratulations! I have clear ceramic braces right now. I’ve had them since April, and hope to get them off in 12-14 months. I had the option of getting invisalign, but our insurance covered ceramic and so I figured I could handle wearing them for a year. I can’t wait to get them off though.
Meg says
I actually had braces in high school! It sucked, but I only had them for about a year. I was SO bad when I had them to…gum, popcorn, ALL that stuff still went into my jaws 😉 and I guess I got lucky cause I didn’t cause any damage.
Super speedy breakfast looks tasty nonetheless – you really love those veg bacon strips!! 🙂
Enjoy your day and congrats! So happy for you 😀
Shanna, like Banana says
I was jealous of people that had braces…I thought they looked so cool, especially when they had the colored rubber bands 😉 I also wanted glasses and freckles.
Now I just have glasses 8)
kbwood says
lol i was like WHAT?? you had BRACES??!! but girl – you look so beautiful!! (and i didnt think it was possible for you to look more beautiful!)
Melissa (MelissaLikesToEat) says
I didn’t know you had those!! Congrats! I remember getting my braces off for sure! I actually can still “feel” them on my teeth if I think about it. 🙂
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
Congrats on the braces!! I had them for three years in middle school and I LOVED getting them off. I have permanent lingual bars on the backs of my top and bottom teeth though, so I’ll never feel the slippery smooth feeling again 🙁
Sarra H says
I’m in my last semester of college, and I had (metal) braces from my senior year of high school to the1st semester of my senior year of college. I just got them off in January and it was the best feeling ever!!!! It was a huge relief to get them taken out, I felt like ugly betty for 4 years (hahaha jk 😉 )
Janna's Keeping it Real! says
i had braces (twice) but don’t really recall the day(s) i got them off….except for ONE aspect of it. as they worked off one of the brackets, somehow it came lose from the hygenist’s grip…all i remember was hearing “whooops” and straight down my throat it went. i kid you not!
congrats on being brace free! your teeth look lovely!
Jenna says
Ha I know this is random but I love that your banana has spots. I only eat bananas if they have brown spots on them!
Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) says
I had braces for FIVE years… the day I got them off in 8th grade was amazing. I couldn’t wait to bite into an apple and chew on a sticky Now n Later… by far one of the most memorable days of my life 🙂
effcubed says
I remember when I got my braces off…this past April! Haha! I was super excited and I couldn’t stop smiling! I also had my b-day party the same night and my crush was there (he said i looked cute w/o braces, it didn’t really mean anything to him though…**sigh**.) oh well!
Congrats! 🙂
Sara says
Yay, no more braces! I never had them…but really wanted them.
Martha says
Congrats on your braces! You’re going to want to smile even more now.
I’ve just gotten really into Bodypump too! What kind of weights do you use?
peanutbutterfingers says
isn’t it awesome? you can see my weight selection here: http://peanutbutterfingers.wordpress.com/2010/04/10/so-what-is-bodypump/
Tina says
I’ve never had braces so I can’t relate to the feeling, but I imagine it feels great. And I really didn’t even think about them when I met you. I knew you had Invisalign, but forgot and couldn’t tell at all in person.
Maura @ theMOHdiaries says
Congrats!! I totally remember the day I got my braces off. I was in 7th grade, I think? I had them for 3 years so everyone loved seeing me without them. I felt like a total celeb for a day 😀
Amanda- The Nutritionist Reviews says
Congrats on getting your braces off! I never even noticed them in pictures at all!
Amber K says
OMG, I totally remember. I had them on for four years and when they finally came off I remember my teeth feeling sooo WEIRD! They actually felt slimy because I wasn’t used to having smooth teeth anymore!
lindsay says
Such a pretty smile!!!! I totally remember the day I got my braces off. My teeth felt so slippery.
Holly at Greek Yogurt and Apple Slices says
YES! I definitely remember the day- I could NOT stop smiling 😀
And, yes, I had the same feeling- that slimely, slippery feeling- & I kept licking my teeth all day.
Mae says
Oh, I was thrilled to get my braces off… and apparently I was having too good of a day, because I proceeded to get into my first and only fender-bender on the way back to school from the ortho, right by the Orlando Science Center! I had only been a licensed driver for about three months so it pretty much felt like the end of the world…
Christina says
I had braces from age 14 to 16…metal mouth too..it was awful. But felt so great once I got them off! I couldn’t stop touching my teeth 🙂 You look absolutely beautiful 🙂
Ever since reading about Bodypump here on your blog, I searched here in vancouver for one, and much to my surprise they have a quite a few! So Monday I am going to my first one. I’m kind of nervous! Is it really hard? I’m not so great at cardio yet!
xoxoxooxo
peanutbutterfingers says
bodypump is actually a strength-training class – not a cardio one. it’s awesome! definitely challenging, but you can control the level of weights, so you can make it work for your desired level.
lowandbhold says
That’s exciting! You look great – though you always did 🙂
I have really been wanting to try that faux bacon – good to know it’s tasty!
Marina says
Oh, I remember how it was like to get my braces off. I couldn’t stop smiling the whole day! And I so enjoyed finally sinking my teeth in something hard 😀
jensanders52 says
Getting my braces off was possibly the best day of my adolesence!!! I had them on from the middle of 6th grade to 10th!!!! I remember feeling so much more confident! 🙂
Congrats!!!!
Nancy says
I was an older candidate too, with braces. I was a metal mouth in 2006-2008, and I remember very specifically what I felt like getting them off. My teeth looked HUGE, they were almost too big for my mouth, and for a few months afterwards I wasn’t comfortable with my own smile. I almost regretted braces, because everyone before told me I had the best smile, and then nobody was telling me this after the fact. I was so sad lol.
I also was very excited to bite into an apple. My teeth felt as if they were going to break off, mainly because I guess they were shifting a bit after and were a bit loose.
Oh, and of course I blogged about it lol….. http://www.spiffykerms.com/2008/09/sept-18-its-been-six-months/
Graze With Me says
I had braces for 6 years (4th to 10th grade) and I got them off the day before picture day sophomore year. The first foods I ate were a banana (smooooth) and corn on the cob. It was awesome….
Kelly says
YAY!!!! How exciting! I got my braces off in 8th grade and I totally remember that slippery feeling! HOLLAH!
Deva (Voracious Vorilee) says
I had braces for about 18 months, they were the regular kind with the rubber bands. I got them off when I was fifteen and my teeth felt way too big and weird. I’m pretty sure I drank my weight in water while I was getting used to NOT having them!
The first thing I ate after having them off was a BIG apple and caramel! YUM!
Lissy says
Braces were terrible. I’ve had a lot of dental work done, I had a frickin’ implant drilled into my jaw and let me tell ya, braces were much more painful. And ugly!
I have two dentists tell me I need braces again. I finally went to an orthodontist to shut the second guy up. He told me I would have to be crazy to get braces again because my teeth aren’t that bad and it would cost a fortune to get my implant removed and put in again. Ha! Take that stupid evil dentist!
Sorry, I really hated my braces. And my retainer. I spent ten years with a palet expander, braces or a retainer in my mouth. I had to stop wearing it because I was in too much pain when I woke up in the morning. I guess I outgrew it.
Jessica says
Congrats on getting your braces off! I wore an appliance/retainer for 3 years when I was much younger, but never braces… now (13 years later), my dentist thinks I need braces. I’m really hoping I can do invisalign if it’s necessary – was it really not painful?
peanutbutterfingers says
it honestly wasn’t bad for me at all. my teeth were usually a little sensitive for a day or two after i switched out the aligners (which i changed every 2 wks), but i definitely didn’t have any serious discomfort. i think it varies from patient to patient, but my experience was really positive!
Koko says
I’m going to get invisalign next week and I’m SOOOO nervous, can people tell you have them on? Not that I care what people think, but am sort of worried about how they are going to look!
peanutbutterfingers says
You can tell up close but not from too far away. You def get used to them! Good luck!
