On my plate:
- Smoked salmon sandwich with vegetable cream cheese, tomato and broccoli slaw
- Sliced red pepper
Yum!
Since my mid-day meal included smoked salmon, which I rarely buy because it is so expensive, it made me think about what aspects of my diet would change if I were a millionaire and had tons of money at my disposal to buy all sorts of fun foods.
Here are the changes I would make to my food purchases if money were no object:
- Purchase only organic fruits and vegetables (not just the “dirty dozen“)
- Buy pre-sliced vegetables and fruit salads
- Buy only organic meats and milk (we already try to do this, but are sometimes swayed when the prices seem to skyrocket)
- Purchase pricier lean meats like bison
- Buy more gourmet nut butters
- Enjoy more seafood (crab claws, lobster, shellfish, scallops and pricier fish would be consumed regularly)
- Eat more gourmet cheese
- Eat more fancy nuts
- Enjoy different kinds of expensive chocolate daily
As you guys know, Ryan and I are very budget conscious and try to limit the amount of money we spend on our trips to the grocery store. Saving money and bargain shopping is actually kind of fun for me (I get this from my mom who bargain hunts like it’s her job!), but wouldn’t it be amazing not to have to think about a budget when it comes to fueling your body with healthy food?
Question of the Afternoon
- If you had unlimited funds, what foodie items would you spend your money on?
Definitely all organic, and I would eat out more! I would also buy endless snack bars, because I LOVE them and am addicted!! Clif bars…mmm… 🙂
Everything you mentioned plus Whole foods hot bar everyday!! That would be the life…
I’d go all organic with produce and eggs; purchase more fish and seafood; and buy larger quantities of locally produced, artisan-quality cheeses, breads, and products like honey, preserves, etc. Basically I’d get a few hundred dollar billz and go to the Farmer’s Market and make everyone’s day!
I’d also beef up my home garden with exotic plants, and add on a sunroom so that I could grow stuff like lemons and avocados in my otherwise frigid hometown of Milwaukee.
I would love to have all organic foods. And I’d also buy more “health” foods, like different flours (garbanzo) and yummy cheeses like brie and goat!
I came up with lots of similar things as most others, and then laughed when I realized that even with a butt-ton of money I’d still probably buy what I do now and clip coupons! I’m picky about my foods plus I love good deals and those just wouldn’t change.
I’d hire a personal chef 😉
Interesting question! I have been feeling as if I spend too much on groceries lately and it has been the meat and nut butters that have been adding up to expensive grocery bills. If I wasn’t limited I would buy fancy nut butters and organic meat! Yum!
I wish I could eat all organic, but right now it just doesn’t make sense in the money department. Hopefully by the time I have kids, I will be able to afford it, because it’s very important to me.
That looks like a Deli Flat in my Bring my Lunch to Work challenge this week. They are so good! If money were no object, I would try out one of those meal delivery systems in NYC!
I love your blog 🙂 I just had to comment and say that I totally agree on how my diet would change if I had more disposable income…I already recently switched to buying all organic dirty dozen veggies/fruits and organic meats/wild fish but it has been at the cost of eliminating a lot of the more processed foods and snacks we used to get. Studying nutritional science has definitely taught me that it is worth it though 🙂 There is so much crap being put into the food supply that organic is totally worth it! Something that definitely helps though is adding a few dollars each week in “fun food” money. If you want a really expensive fun food (hello fancy nut butter!), just save a few weeks worth before purchasing it. I have given myself $5 a week to get something special if I want it and I must say it makes grocery shopping more fun haha
wow that looks amazing 🙂 if i had a ton of money i would love to try all organic foods- yumm! love your blog hun!
High quality cheese, chocolate and seafood NO DOUBT! I rarely drink, but I’m sure I would splurge on fancy shmancy beer, wine, champagne or other high end booze in a small amount.
I would grocery shop with my eyes closed!
Eat lots more Sushi!
I totally agree with your food choices. I worked at a gourmet cheese store and regularly brought home cheeses and have been known to do some damage. The most expensive we had in the store was $29/lb! Seafood would be high on my list of stuff to stock up on too! I think I’d also splurge on olive oils and the dessert case at Whole Foods : )
I already spend what seems to be unlimited funds on food. That’s a top priority for me… but If I had a lot more money i’d buy great food for friends and family too so that they could eat healthier
I would have a full salad bar installed in my kitchen so that I would always have access to delicious and healthy toppings.
And a fro yo machine!
I would buy 100% organic for sure! I also wouldn’t go into the grocery store with a list 🙂
I’m going to answer this not with a “what,” but with a “where”: I would do all my shopping at natural food stores, such as Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods!
ahh agreeeed on the nut butters. so expensive, but so worth it! I would shop exclusively at whole foods too, and my freezer would have like, every Amy’s Kitchen meal possible. hahah 🙂
It’s so much fun to think of things like this:) I would for sure buy organic fruits, veggies, and lean/ delicious meat, lots of seafood (I LOVE shrimp, crab, lobster, and scallops), and I would buy the “fancy” milk that comes in glass bottles. It’s called Shatto, I think? lol.
I am also a fan of bargain shopping- I never go to the store without my meal plan and grocery list.
I would buy all kinds of gourmet nut butters and coconut oil, flour, butter products. I’d only buy free range organic meats and dairy. I’d buy lots of fresh seafood and exotic ingredients to cook more ethnic foods with. And I’d probably have champagne every night. Great question! How fun!!!
Yes! Love this post! I would have all sorts of nut butters. I would just go CRAZY at Whole Foods and try so many different foods. Usually I allow myself to just try one or two new foods that are off the list, but I would probably go crazy.
SUSHI!!!! I would eat sushi for brkfst, lunch and dinner. I would also buy expensive yogurt, fresh fruits and veggies, chia seeds and gourmet nutter butters. YUM
I’d definitely buy 100% organic! And I would try all the nut butters that I can find. And I would eat berries every day ;).
whole foods wouldnt be so whole pay check to me! 🙂
I would buy amazing local stuff all the time
I do not think I have ever had smoked salmon. It must be good since you eat it a lot and seem to like it! I might have to try it one day!
Definitely all organic meats, dairy and produce!
i’d go organic. i’d also buy more seafood…and special condiments. i still do this from time to time, but it’s on rare occasions 🙂
I would definitely go all organic. How great would it be to win some $$$…a girl can dream can’t she?!
If I had a million dollars I would hire a personal chef to make me the freshest, healthiest and best meals ever. I guarantee if I had a chef to do it all for me I would eat much healthier!
Haha! Now I have that song in my head, “If I had a million dollars!”
I would definitely buy all organic, clear out an entire cabinet for all my expensive new nut butters, and buy lots and lots of seafood! Yum!
i’d quit my job, move to somewhere where I can invest in a huuuge garden (read: not my little apartment!) and harvest all of the veggies that I want! And fruit. Becuase my new diggs would be in a place where I get every single climate in the world… so that way everything would be “local” and I’d know how they’re grown 🙂
A girl can dream, right?
I would totally spend my extra millions towards my cereal additction..lol…i love trying different brands and flavours but find that certain boxes can be kinda pricey. Since I love combing a bunch of them together i could probably use the extra ca$h to fund this li’ll habit.
I think I’d make Whole Foods my primary shopping market! I totes agree with you about the pre-sliced veggies/fruits. Life would be so much easier…
First of all, I LOVE smoked salmon…yum! If I were a millionaire I would for sure shop at whole foods for all of my groceries and I would have a live in chef to make me healthy meals every single day 🙂
It sounds like you should move to Vietnam… We enjoy Seafood feasts on a regular basis. One of my favorites is crab claws cooked in Tamarind sauce, a huge plate of them is about $3!
Love this post! It is really something to think about because especially for us food conscious people, I get serious sticker shock while shopping in Whole Foods and the Greenwise section of Publix. I agree that I would buy everything possible organic and I would splurge on seafood, I like it but haven’t prepared it myself too much because I’m afraid to spend the money on it then not cook it well. I slightly disagree with the pre-sliced fruits and ve just because I think they might have to put something unnatural on it after it’s cut up to keep it fresh.
I would NOT buy pre-cut fruit or veggies. My best friend’s husband worked at a place where they cut up all of that, and he immediately came home and said they were never buying it again. You have no idea the disgusting stuff that happens….ew
But I WOULD buy all organic and I’d buy more Amy’s products. Because they rock! (I just wish their gluten-free veggie pizza wasn’t $7 for an individual pizza!)
If I had unlimited money I would definitely eat more seafood. Maybe I’d be a pescetarian. I would probably buy more organic things.
I’ve never been to a TJs or Whole foods so I can’t say that I would stock up on their products.. I think the nearest whole foods is in Tampa.
If money weren’t an issue, I’d buy the single serving flavored chobanis, oikos, and fages rather than a tub of generic greek yogurt. Expensive peanut butter and granola would make the list. And I would be much more adventurous in the fruit and veggie department.
I’d hire a chef to cook for me on the days I didn’t have time or desire to cook. Then ordering out junk food would be eliminated.
