That was me yesterday.
I snacked all day long, though dinner and after dinner and went to bed feeling just plain bleh.
I actually think my eating frenzy started on Saturday at the Taste of Ocala and the momentum kept up through last night. It was a filling weekend, that’s for sure!
When I think back on what I ate yesterday, I realize I didn’t eat much protein outside of my chicken salad for lunch and found myself snacking on cookies and white cheddar popcorn. (I mean how good it that stuff?) More often than not, eating crap just makes me crave more crap.
I think we all have days like this sometimes and I just try to move on and make the next day healthier. It’s no use giving yourself a hard time and I try to remember how much better I feel on days when my diet is filled with healthier fare. I’m using that thought to motivate me to eat healthy food today!
Breakfast
Healthy food for breakfast came in the form of overnight oats topped with a freshly sliced banana.
This was actually batch number two of overnight oats that I made last night. Batch number one was consumed after dinner as an evening snack. (This happens quite often when I make overnight oats, actually. It’s like they call to me from the fridge.)
I also had a hot mug of crème brulee coffee on the side.
A little caffeine for a productive Monday morning!
Workout
Before breakfast, I headed to the gym with Ryan for a quality workout.
I began with a 20 minute treadmill workout that got my heart rate up and left me super sweaty.
Then it was time for some strength training.
I did a total body superset workout that looked like this:
Here are links to some of the exercises that may be confusing:
It was a fast-moving workout that challenged me and made my muscles burn. Victory!
PBF May Book Club

We’ll be discussing the book on June 1.
Happy reading!

Question of the Morning
- What do you do on days when your appetite seems insatiable?
On days when I cannot seem to satisfy my appetite no matter how much I eat, I try to make a cognizant effort to eat healthy snacks that are high in healthy fat and protein, like apple slices with peanut butter or trail mix. I will also try to get out of the house and do something since I find that this feeling often happens to me when I’m at home, procrastinating on something I should be doing like cleaning or freelance work.
I didn’t follow either of these little tricks yesterday though… cookies and white cheddar popcorn simply called to me.
Kimberly says
That was totally me yesterday also! I could not satisfy my hunger – slightly embarrassing that I was hungry after breakfast, lunch and dinner. I blame a little bit of a hangover, no exercise and being away for the weekend! Thank god Monday is here to kick me back into gear!
Laurie @ Love, Laugh, Laurie says
I have days like that all the time, especially the weekends! I usually try to have a big bowl of oatmeal with peanut butter…usually does the trick, but not always 🙂
So excited to finally participate in book club this month! I’m ordering it RIGHT now so there are no porblems!
Krista @ Blonde Aesthetic says
I am 98% positive this post has created a monster inside of me who will demand payment in the form of white cheddar popcorn. I love it. I have started making popcorn on the stove (we do not have a microwave) and then coating it with butter flavored Pam, Adobo seasoning, and parm cheese. It is also delicious!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Oh I totally have those insatiable days too! When they hit, I try to fill up on high volume, less-calorie-dense foods (usually veggies and water-filled fruits like melon), as well as lots of water. Like you said, the next day is always a good one to start fresh!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
the days that i notice my appetite is out of control i think about what i ate so far that day… i usually come to realize that my protein intake is lacking because that’s what usually helps me feel satisfied and full.
peanutbutterfingers says
i think the lack of protein is what got me yesterday, too!
Bonnie @ pastepants says
Mmmm that bowl of overnight oats looks SO good!
This Fit Chick says
Insatiable days are crazy! It usually means I up my fats to calm it down 🙂
Great supersets!
Heather says
I have a love/hate relationship with days like that. They only happen once every couple of months, so when they come around I usually just indulge. Which means I eat as much frozen yogurt and fruit as I want. And the next day, I always feel like garbage, and swear i’ll never do that again. It’s a viscious cycle.
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
This book was definitely #3 on my choices, but I’m actually glad! One of the things I enjoy about the book club is that it gets me reading things I wouldn’t have picked out myself, and so far I’ve loved them all!
peanutbutterfingers says
me too! 🙂 it actually wasn’t until LAST month that a book i personally voted for actually won. 🙂
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
I could eat bags and bags of white cheddar popcorn – so good! I’m excited for May book club – just downloaded the book!
Hayley C @ Running Down the Runway says
That was me yesterday too! No matter how much I ate, I was looking for the next snack! Once I start I just cannot stop. It definitely happens though from time to time and you just have to move on ! I woke up this morning and made a delicious and healthy green smoothie to get my Monday started out right!
Annette@FitnessPerks says
This was me a few days ago–but I usually just roll with it. Especially if I am eating a lot of good food and protein–b/c usually that means my body was missing that from the day before.
If it’s just junk after junk, then I usually grab and apple and go on a walk, b/c I know mybody doesn’t necessarily need that crap. It works! But of course, if I want ice cream, I am going to have it. It’s a balance that every person needs to be in tune with herself to figure out 🙂
Great looking workout!
chelcie @ chelcie's food files says
I love pinning your workouts! I did one yesterday that was the “burning legs and abs circuit”..my legs were on fire!
I am the same way about feeling better when I have a day of healthy eats..yesterday was not really that day but I started my day off with a batch of overnight oats too and I already feel like this day is starting off on the right foot:)
peanutbutterfingers says
i need to do that circuit again! so glad you liked it!
Meghan says
We all have hungry days! They’re the worst! I do the same thing, snack on something healthy yet satisfying like fruit with peanut butter (yum!). I read that your metabolism increases slightly during the time of the month, and I find sometimes that’s the culprit for my hungry days. Sorry for the borderline TMI haha, but another trick is to avoid buying my favorite snacks at that time!
Annie says
it’s amazing what our bodies tell us when we stop to listen!
that deadlift to row exercise is enticing… i will have to incorporate it into my next back workout!
jen says
so weird bc i had one of those days yesterday too! i had first and second breakfast! lol then i ate lunch and came back like half an hour later and had more. then i snacked like twice before dinner and had an after dinner snack! i noticed i snacked a lot on chips and i felt guilty after bc i could have obviously picked something healthier and more filling. we all have these days i guess!
Ashley @ Sweat for Sweets says
Hahah your stomach was probably stretched out from the Taste of Ocala! You were on a ROLL! I find when I can’t satisfy my hunger, I also try to at least have healthy snacks (though usually when this strikes, I have undeniable cravings for junk food) AND drink lots of water. Dehydration can SERIOUSLY affect your body’s hunger signals.
Laura Lea @ Beanie Bumbles says
I hear you on those kinda days. I had one last week and ended up having like four snacks after dinner! Just have to roll with it, exactly like you did, and know that your bod probably needs it for some reason!
Yellow Haired Girl says
If I’m going to have one of those days … it’s usually on a Sunday! It always just seems like a snacking day, and then I end up feeling crappy too. I tend to try and eat some PB or nuts or something … but hey, sometimes endless amounts of pita chips do the trick too. Right? (No….)
Lindsey says
I have had a few of those days recently and have a similar plan of attack as you mention. Just try and eat as I need to, but keep the snacks as healthy as possible. I also will have a big glass of water before I eat more, in case its just thirst versus hunger.
Alysia @ Slim Sanity says
I felt that way saturday…I ate a ton of yogurt and fruit with peanut butter….and some chocolate chips to satisfy my sweat tooth. Whole wheat pita or veggies and hummus have also been my other go to snack! Today is a healthier start for me as well! I’ve actually read some articles that eating junk food gets addicting…its so true!
Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon says
I do the same thing and try to get out of the house. Usually when my appetite seems insatiable, it’s because I’m bored and need to go do something. Other times though I can attribute it to a tougher than normal workout and I just roll with it, assuming that my body needs the extra fuel!
Sana says
Sometimes I snack because I am bored. So I try and do something fun 🙂
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
I feel like this all the time! I love carbs and sugar. For healthy snacks I love snacking on some fruit or on peanut butter and apples like you said.
Mallory @ Have your cake says
I think we all have days like that – I blame hormones 🙂 It happens to me once or twice a month or so. As long as it doesn’t exceed that, then I figure it’s not a HUGE problem… as long as I am not doing it out of boredom, loneliness, sadness, etc… then you can’t just focus on how to stop but the root of the problem as well. I’m pretty sure hormones are to blame most of the time though! When it happens I usually indulge and just remember that I run like a maniac so it’s all right 🙂 Or I pick up the phone and call an old friend to catch up… you can’t be crunching in someone’s ear!
Samantha says
Honestly I think I just go with it. Usually it is just easier to give the body what it wants. 🙂
I laughed at the oatmeal calling from the fridge. Oatmeal does that to me all the time.
alex says
Can’t wait to read this book….although Insurgent was SO my choice 😉 Btw – This book is for sale on Amazon (for the Kindle) for $2.99! DEAL!!
Frances says
I don’t think being insatiably hungry once in a while is a bad thing! I try to do the same thing, though, and fill in the cracks with healthy stuff, like almond butter bananas or oatmeal and jam. Sometimes I’ll make a trip to get frozen yogurt- the sort that tastes like tart soft serve, in a shop with a wall full of toppings!
Alexandra says
Ahh I think that I had the EXACT same day yesterday! I swear no matter WHAT I ate I was not satisfied! I’m atrributing it to the fact that Cinco de Mayo got the best of me the night before and I was slighty “under the weather” yesterday morning – so dehydrated and hungry! I tihnk that days like these are good for me once in a while and its definitely not worth getting down on yourself! It makes me more motivated to eat healthier becuase I know how much better I feel! Here’s to a healthy, productive week 🙂
Rachel @ The Avid Appetite says
Those days totally happen to me too. I try to fill up on fruits and veggies! They usually do the trick, or at least divert my attention!
Dana @ Muscles, Miles and Meals says
That always happens to me after a heavy leg workout! I feel a little better eating more carbs and indulging when I know I’ve worked really hard at the gym. I try to get in lots and lots of water as well.
Caitlin @ This Bride's Joyride says
I try to just eat an extra actual meal when I feel that way! Otherwise I’ll just go from one snack to another to another and never feel full!
I’m excited for the book this month and for my first month participating in the book club!
Jodi @ I Run for Food and Wine says
If I have days like this, I just eat. I try to listen to my body and make an educated assumption that, for some reason, it needs that on a particular day. some days I crave fruit all day longs, and other days I crave french fries…my body is smart 😉
Kim @ The Family Practice says
I hate when I give in to the munchies! I end up just eating and eating and continually “wanting something” but not being able to fill that unnamed craving. Then again, its fun to go all out every once and a while 🙂
Chelsea @ Chelsea Eats Treats says
That happens to me all the time! I find that it’s usually worse on Fridays or weekends, probably because I think of those days as more indulgent days anyway. I think the best way to stop my cravings is to drink a lot of water (which fills me up) or to chew a piece of minty gum. I also try to do something productive to distract myself, like read a book or go for a bike ride, but that only works for so long! Sometimes you just gotta give in!
Nicole says
That was me on Saturday. My tricks to stop snacking include: painting my nails (don’t want to ruin the polish), knitting, coloring. Leaving the house and go “browsing” somewhere where I KNOW I won’t actually buy anything. Take the dogs for a walk. Anything to just break the mental need to snack.

I call those Hollow days (yay for Hunger games reference!). I had one yesterday and it was horrible. I’m talking cupcakes and froyo and more. Today is a new day though! One day of horrible eating isn’t going to ruin my life.
Melissa @ Squats and Squash says
Excited for this book!! But I could’ve sworn the Insurgent sequel was going to win so I already bought insurgent on amazon (I haven’t read it yet so I wnted to catch up!) guess that means I’ll have 2 books To read this month…not complaining 🙂
Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction says
I know what you mean! That happens a lot to me too! It’s sooo annoying! Sometimes I just go with it and eat a lot of snack because clearly I just need to get it out of my system. Other times I do what you said and try to eat more protein. Isn’t that funny how our bodies are sometimes never full?!
Jennifer says
OMG. I am so glad I am not the only one who has starving “I could eat a horse” days. Sometimes, I’m a little embarressed by how ravenous I am! I just want to be like “STOP THE MADNESS!” Ha!
I usually try to fill up on something like Oatmeal, carrots, or Hot Tea/Diet Hot Cocoa (25 cals).
I was CrAzY hungry after my half marathon!!! It was awful! THe hunger hit me about 3 days after and lasted for about 3 days. I swear I gained a pound. ha ha.
brianna says
I have days like that, where nothing seems to satisfy my hunger. I just roll with it and make better choices the next day. It usually happens when I’m super stressed or upset about something. I know I just need to give in and I’ll get over it faster than if I try to ignore the cravings.
Brianna @ Don't Eat Crap says
I was like that this weekend traveling is the worst when it comes to over eating. It’s so hard to do because you want to try so much in such little time!
Dione says
I try to increase my water intake. If my belly is full of water, I generally won’t snack as much or a small bite will be enough.
Elizabeth says
Julie–thank you for your honesty and openness. We all have those days. When I’m feeling snackey I turn to my favorite low cal protein packed roasted lightly salted edamame. Delicious and satisfying! Hugs. E
Have you tried them?
Allie says
I always find that the tricks you mention work for me… except I so rarely do them!
PS. Idk if you’ve figured out your milk frother yet, but I have one of those and they are the jammm. Just pour a little bit of milk in a cup, submerge the frother and turn it on! If you warm up the milk first it gets even frothier and more like a legit latte. (But if you turn on the frother before submerging it, better hope you’ve put it in a tall class because it’ll get messy!)
Eva @ Committed2Nutrition says
I truly feel like I could have written this post. This happens to almost every single one of us. I used to get mad at myself and beat myself up over it, but now I really work hard on letting it go. Tomorrow and the next day are new days, and I take that extra food as extra energy to get through my tough zumba-teaching schedule. I feel it is just a part of life – we can’t perfect ALL of the time 😉
Amy @Health Hungry says
I think we can all relate to days like that! I try to pay close attention to my body when this comes up:
Step One: Hydrate – dehydration stimulates serious food cravings
Step Two: Reach for a healthy fat like nuts or nut butter on an apple(helllllloooo pfingers!) This usually defends against any real hunger
Step Three: My rule of thumb is, if I am craving something specific consistently – I make a healthier version of it, or I just allow myself a planned for splurge
.
I think we are so conditioned to feel badly for these times, but maybe – just maybe – there are physiological reasons for it!
Amy @Health Hungry says
oops, that should read “hello pBfingers” 😉
Ashley says
you need to try popcorn, indiana’s cinnamon sugar popcorn. it is amazing!! enjoy new york and boston!

Thanks for the great work outs!! I’m definitely going to try this one. When you do transition workouts with weights, like this one, do you use the big 45lb barbells with weights, or the smaller, more manageable bar bells? I find it really hard to transition between workouts using the big barbell, but the only small barbells my gym has have a pre-determined weight on them and they don’t go up very high, so I was curious what you used and how you transitioned from one to the next. Do you just collect all the equipment and have it out ready to use?
