You’d think setting an alarm for 5 a.m. would mean I would definitely sleep right up until the beep goes off, but that isn’t the case most of the time.
I have an internal alarm clock that is apparently a little too accurate. It gets a kick out of waking me up 45 minutes before my alarm goes off which is a little annoying. It’s enough time for me to remain in bed, awake, for 30 minutes and then drift back into a blissful slumber right before the alarm actually goes off. It’s pleasant.
After a mostly restful night (except for the last hour or so), I woke up to the alarm with Ryan and headed off to the gym to check our respective workouts off the list!
Workout
My workout for today began with a 20 minute elliptical workout and concluded with an upper body workout.
While I spent some time on the elliptical, I flipped through the IDEA World Fitness Convention’s schedule which got me way too excited for the conference in August.
It was, hands down, the best conference I’ve ever attended and I can’t wait to go back again this year. (You may see my recap from last year’s conference here: IDEA World Fitness Convention 2013)
If you’re a fitness professional, I cannot recommend this conference enough. It’s incredibly energizing and I left feeling super motivated to kick butt as a trainer and group exercise instructor.
Breakfast
Breakfast this morning came in a glass.
A berry yummy smoothie!
In the mix:
- Coconut milk
- Vanilla Greek yogurt
- Frozen banana
- Frozen blueberries
- Frozen strawberries
- Frozen cherries
- Spoonful of almond butter
It was almost too thick to drink (just how I like it), so a spoon came in handy.
Off to work!
Question of the Morning
- Do you feel like you have an internal alarm clock, or do you always seem to sleep right up until your alarm goes off in the morning?
amrapCindy says
YES. I have a nagging internal alarm clock, too. If I’m getting up really early for something (like a 5am flight) I’m so paranoid about sleeping through my alarm that I’ll wake up every hour on the hour. It’s exhausting!
Catherine says
OMG – the same thing happens to me!! Super annoying
Shannon says
I absolutely have an internal alarm clock! If I try and sleep in on the weekends, I have to try and go to bed later, so my body is naturally more tired. But no matter what I am awake by 6am every day! I usually get up at 4:30 during the week.
I actually like my internal alarm clock, because it keeps me in check for keeping my workouts consistent 🙂
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat says
I set my alarm just in case, but generally I wake up on my own before it actually goes off. I very rarely ever sleep right up until it beeps.
Linda @ running4two says
That conference looks like so much fun! I would really like to go!
No internal alarm clock for me…it’s either my phone alarm or my 14 month old daughter. 🙂
Amanda @ A Latte Learn says
I typically sleep up until my alarm…It’s the worst feeling to me to wake up just before it goes off.
Becky @ Olives n Wine says
I definitely have an internal alarm but mine tends to go along with the sun. When the sun rises earlier in the summer months, so do I and in the winter I have the hardest time waking up!
Erin M. says
Hi! I’ve recently started getting up at 5 for 6am classes at the gym. Very early into the class, I see spots and get weak and dizzy; I suspect I’m not eating the right breakfast before hand. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
Josh has an internal alarm clock so he wakes up before our alarm goes off, turns it off and wakes me up. I really appreciate being woken up by him instead of a loud beeping noise.
Linz @ Itz Linz says
i definitely have an internal alarm clock… even on days where i “sleep in” i’m up at 6 or before! i don’t mind though – i’m definitely a morning person! (yet can’t make it much past 9 pm haha)
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Haha I also wake up before my alarm! It goes off at 4:50 am and I tend to wake up around 4:40-4:45. Glad it’s not 45 minutes early though!
Sara @ LovingOnTheRun says
I used to have an internal alarm clock but the more than my schedule has changed the more it is all out of whack now. I need to get back on a schedule but is just always so hard!
Shelly says
This is one of those things that I have always wondered if it was just me! Guess not! My alarm is set for sometime in the 5:30 range most days. I, too, will wake up 45 minutes before it goes off and then about every five minutes until it’s time to wake up. I think the worst is when I wake up 15 minutes before because then it’s almost like I may as well just get up. And then some days I wake up two minutes before. I rarely make it to the point where my alarm actually goes off.
Shel@PeachyPalate says
I totally do! I pretty much wake up 10 minutes before my alarm, which I set 30 minutes early, every morning! I like knowing that I’ll wake no matter what and not have to leap straight out of bed! 🙂
Kelly @ Kelly Runs For Food says
That happens to me too! Except lately I’ve been waking up at 2:30 every night, which is not helpful at all!
Elise @ High Heels and Glittering Eyes says
My internal alarm clock will be the death of me I just know it! I wake up M-Th @ 4:45am for the gym but somehow can’t seem to convince my body (and brain) that I need to sleep in F-Su! Oh and that smoothie looks amazeballs, gotta add that one to my list!
Ali says
I used to have an internal alarm clock when I had a consistent schedule, but since having a baby for the past 12.5 months, he’s usually my alarm clock between 5-6 am. I toss and turn when I don’t hear from him for longer than about 3 hours.
Nikki says
Our vizsla is our alarm clock. 5:45 AM every morning!
Julie says
Haha! I can relate to that 100%!
meredith @ The Cookie ChRUNicles says
I definitely have an internal alarm clock. I have actually never used an alarm clock in my life!
Elizabeth {Positively Healthy} says
I totally have an internal clock! It can be annoying at times, but most of the time I am okay with it! 🙂 The smoothie looks amazing!
janet says
My internal clock is the cat …. although when I am on non-rotating shifts Iusually wake up 2-3 minutes before the clock goes off.
Chrissy @Pinkpolishandrunningshoes says
I definitely have an internal alarm clock. I almost never sleep right until the alarm goes off. My cat also thinks it’s playtime at 4am every morning lol so that might also have something to do with it.
Haley @Cupcakes and Sunshine says
I have an internal alarm clock as well! It really bothers me that I can’t sleep in, so I have recently googled different ways to sleep in later. Melatonin is supposed to help, night yoga (my favorite!) and turning off all electronics at least two hours before bed (This is a toughie!)
Megan @ Meganmumbles says
Your smoothie color is so pretty 🙂 Mine is usually an ugly green color hehe but o so good!
Lori says
That is SO funny because my alarm was set for 5:15am and I woke up at 5:06am! I guess my body only wanted 8 hours of sleep last night…. 🙁 Hahaha
Jen @ Pretty Little Grub says
No internal alarm clock for me. My body would be more than happy to sleep until 9 each day.
Jessica Hauert says
Before I got married I slept ALL through the night. Not waking up. Now I wake up at least twice a night AND on the weekends I always wake up at the time my alarm goes off, even though I never set one on the weekends. It’s kind of a bummer!
Shauna says
So excited to see what this year’s conference has to offer! I’m not a fitness professional but I have read several reviews and can’t wait to see what y’all think! Do you guys ever do the same work outs?
Megan @ The Skinny-Life says
I am actually the same way. It was funny reading your post because I can absolutely relate. My body wakes me up at least an hour before my 4:30 am alarm for off.
Catherine says
I have an internal alarm clock to but it typically is only 5 mins before my alarm is set to go off. I’d be upset if it was 45 before my alarm was set since that is important sleeping time!!
Miss Polkadot says
It’s odd as I’m not a morning person at all. But for whichever reason my internal clock wakes me up before my alarm goes off on those days that I need to get up earlier than usual. I feel we might condition ourselves to internally ‘know’ it’s time to get up if we wake up at the same time for a certain while. Smart, nature, smart!
Brittany says
Same thing!! I always wake up super early when I know I have to be somewhere. I’m always afraid I’m going to over sleep…can you say paranoid?!
Jen @ impossible jen says
my alarm goes off at 6:50am but i always wake up at 6:30 and just lay there. i don’t mind it so much during the week but on the weekends, super agro!
Brynn says
Yes! Mine goes off an hour before my alarm. Most if the time I just a get up and start my day since I’m not great at going back to sleep.
Brooke@SweetnSweaty says
Ugh! I hate that! I have the same problem. I get up everyday at 4:45am to go to the gym, but for some reason I usually wake up at 4:25 instead. And the worst part is….I usually wake up and have to pee so I have to et up anyway! Whomp!
Abi@AbsofSteel says
I normally have an internal alarm that gets me up around 6 but I’ve been confusing the heck out of it lately by trying to sleep in past 7.
Melissa @ Mango About Town says
My internal alarm clock is CONSTANTLY waking me up before my alarm. The worst is when it’s 5 minutes before it goes off then you just count the seconds you have left to lay in your bed. I wish I could wake up whenever I wanted every morning.
Ashley says
Urrrgh. My internal alarm is quite a pain as well. The worst for me is when it wakes me up to what FEELS like the middle of the night, but is actually about 5 minutes before the alarm is set to go off. Brutal.
Katie says
Usually wake up just before I need to or on the weekends way too early!
Stephanie @ Whole Health Dork says
I definitely have an internal alarm clock, though it’s been off a bit the past week–waking me up at 4:15 instead of 5:15! Same problem as you–I just lay in my bed, fall back off to sleep, then wham, alarm clock goes off!
Krystal @ Krystal's Korner says
I had a berry smoothie for breakfast this morning too! I like mine super thick so I usually bring a spoon with me to work.
Rachel @ My Adventures as a Rinderknecht says
I feel like my internal alarm clock wakes me up a bit early as well. However, I have a new baby right now so I wake up all of the time haha!
Jenna says
I almost always wake up about 5-10 min before my alarm clock…and i usually get up at 5 to workout so i really would have enjoyed those 5-10 extra min sometimes! if I am woken up by my alarm, its because i woke up an hr before and just fell back asleep! =p
Kelly says
I don’t always wake up before my alarm but when I know I need to wake up early for something important I usually end up waking up hourly, convinced I overslept- not very fun 🙁
Jackie says
I always wake before my alarm I hate it!
Nancy says
Okay my internal alarm clock isn’t as annoying as yours as it’s more pleasent. I wake up 1-2minutes before my alarm goes off, perhaps because I HATE the sound of alarm clocks starteling you awake?
Molly says
That has to be the most beautiful color smoothie I’ve ever seen! Haha!
Livi says
I have an internal alarm clock, and I am not a fan! It will wake me up 30min-1hour before my alarm 90% of the time. Even on the weekends!
Ashley @ Brocblog says
That smoothie is so pretty and delicious looking!
Jen says
I definitely have an internal alarm. I usually have to be up every day by 8am, and without fail I wake up between 6:45-7:15. Normally I don’t mind because it gives me some extra time to do a Bible study or run over my to-do list. However, it also happens on vacations and days off when I could really enjoy the extra sleep. Or, my favorite, when I stayed up way too late the night before. Oh well, better that than constantly oversleeping, right?
Cheri @ Overactive Blogger says
I want that internal alarm clock thingie! The only way I can get up is if I know for certain that I have to meet someone at the gym or something. Then, and only then, do I wake up early. I also wake up early if I know I have to get on a plane or something, but that’s about it!
