I spent this morning out and about. Running errands before 9 a.m. is a glorious thing because the stores are so quiet and lines are virtually non-existent.
After a quick 5:15 a.m. workout at the gym (I did my Super Fast, Super Sweaty Circuit Workout), I headed home, ate a banana and walked Sadie around the neighborhood with Ryan before heading out for the morning.
My first stop of the day took me to Bagelicious, a local bagel shop, for a toasted pumpkin spice bagel topped with honey walnut cream cheese.
They take their cream cheese seriously and are quite generous with the creamy spread.
I also downed a cappuccino which left me feeling wired!
My friends Leah and Ricky are getting married in St. Petersburg this weekend, and I still needed to get a card for their big day, so after my bagel pit stop, I popped into WalMart since it’s open 24 hours a day. That place is about 10,000 times more pleasant before 9 a.m.
I got sucked into card reading but eventually found a winner before heading toward the checkout line.
And then I got a liiittle sidetracked.
As I was walking by the makeup section, the red lipstick caught my eye. I think red lipstick is so much fun and have always wanted to try it out, but I am rather intimidated by the bold color since my relationship with makeup is a little shaky.
There are so many fun makeup trends that I would love to try but I just don’t feel like I have the skill to pull them off without looking ridiculous.
Like the smoky eye or the winged eyeliner “cat eye” look.
My makeup skills are so limited, so whenever I try something new or more dramatic, I feel so goofy. (I need your help, Gretchen!)
Whenever I’ve had my makeup professionally done in the past, I’ve never really liked it and always felt like I looked overdone. (I didn’t even like my makeup on our wedding day and tried my best to “fix it” before walking down the aisle. Eh.) I’m a simpleton, I guess.
But, after reading your words of encouragement via Instagram and Twitter this morning, I think I might be ready to try the whole red lipstick thing. And if I hate it, there’s always makeup remover!
Questions of the Morning
- Do you enjoy experimenting with makeup?
- Have you tried any fun makeup trends? What did you think of the end result?
Parita @ myinnershakti says
I just bought a “bold” lipstick color this past weekend. I’m all about neutral colors so this was a huge step for me. So far, I’m really loving the look, and I guess it helps that I live in S. Florida where the look is a huge trend! Have a great weekend!
Amanda @ Eat More Rabbit Food says
I am very simple with my makeup. When I do make any changes it seems like I am the only one who can tell!! =)
peanutbutterfingers says
oh my gosh, this reminds me of the time i tried a new curling technique on my hair that took me foreverrr. when i showed ryan he said, “oh, i thought you let it air dry.” nice. 🙂
Amanda @ Eat More Rabbit Food says
Haha! I asked Nathan (my hubby) the other day if he liked how I did my makeup and he said, “You’re wearing makeup?” The funny thing is I think he though that was a complement! =)
Hayley @ Running on Pumpkin says
I am the same way with makeup. My sister is a makeup queen and always trying out (and looking amazing) new makeup trends. I feel like whenever I stray from my usual routine or get it done I look ridiculous and I end up taking it off! You should totally try the red lips though because it’s only your lips and will be easy to fix if you don’t like it!
Tori says
I am so scared of red lipstick as well! I think it’s because I have fair skin and light hair and think it will look ridiculous on me! I try to get creative with my eye makeup but usually feel like it is way too much for daytime, but can’t seem to find a good in between?!
Thanks for nothing, Pinterest 🙂
Jenica says
I feel you! Make up trends are hard and scary. Sometimes I feel like everyone got a make up class in high school that I somehow missed.
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
I’m the same way with makeup… It’s always hard for me to go outside of comfort zone with new and bold ideas. You would totally rock the red lipstick! The main things to keep in mind (or so I’ve heard) is to make sure it’s done well and to keep your eyes and the rest of your makeup toned down.
Lindsay says
I’m pretty pale and have always been very much about neutral lip colors or clear/light pink glosses, but recently I decided to change it up and got some Tarte lip stains (which are amazing, but I’ve heard that the Revlon lipstains are just as nice!) and I’m so glad I did! It definitely takes a little while to get used to the bright or dark color, but I don’t think anyone else really notices it as super bright. I’ve also seen myself in picures and the lip color is definitely not that noticeable. Go for the red lipstick!
Carrie @ Fitness and Frozen Grapes says
Makeup is super intimidating to me. I usually play it safe and stick to my “normal” process (powder, eyeshadow, sometimes eyeliner, and mascara), although when given the choice, I usually pick no makeup (except moisturizer with SPF); it’s so much easier that way. I would love to try a new trend or two, but my makeup knowledge and application process is extremely limited, lol.
Krista @ Blonde Aesthetic says
Oh, I love red lipstick. There really is a red for everyone. For me, it’s one with a blue undertone but that’s because of my coloring. It’s the easiest way in the world to dress up a look.
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I’m the same way with makeup, I barely wear any! I don’t even put on eyeliner, just mascara! Although that’s an improvement because until college I didn’t even do that – I thought it looked silly since my eyelashes and eyebrows are completely blonde!
peanutbutterfingers says
my eyelashes are completely blonde, too! mascara is my friend. 🙂
Kerry @ Half Healthy, Half Nuts says
I have always wanted to try the red lipstick thing too, but am too chicken to go all out with RED. To ease into it, I’ve bought some bolder shades of pinky-red to see if they were OK. I like them, but they are definitely brighter than my normal shade of lipcolor. Let us know how the red works out! Take pics!
Lisa says
Your so naturally pretty you don’t need makeup!
Mrs Type A says
I did my own makeup for my engagement pictures and on my wedding day and think it came out way better than the times I’ve had it done. It’s not that I’m great at makeup– I just have my usual routine down pat! It includes foundation, concealor, mascara, liquid liner (at night/special occasions), and blush. Sometimes I’ll add some eyeshadow in a neutral color just for polish. Thats it.
My husband sees me with my makeup done like this so often that one day I wasn’t wearing any outside while walking the dog and he was like “you look different but I can’t figure out why….” hahaha 🙂
Sara @ Magia e Pasta says
Ah, I totallllly feel you! Especially on the red lipstick front. A lot of people tell me I should try it because of my coloring (dark features, pale skin), but I am way too chicken. The few times I have ventured to try it at Sephora, I just thought I looked like a clown. Maybe I just need somebody a little more skilled with makeup to apply it, haha.
Kristin says
I was going to a wedding once where I had this cute polka dot dress and peep toe shoes with bows on them. I thought red lipstick would totally finish off the retro-vibe of the outfit. Oh my gosh–nightmare! And, stupid me, I didn’t try the lipstick BEFORE the day of the wedding. I ended up taking a tiny dot of it and mixing it with vaseline to make a really sheer lip gloss.

Based on the definition that you referenced, I think that Julie used the word in its correct context. She was explaining her wedding makeup, and how everyone said that she looked fine. So her use of the word “simpleton” refers to her foolish actions, as in she is just foolish, because she doesn’t see that she looks fine. Her usage is also correct in that she may feel foolish for being gullible and jumping on a makeup trend that she already knows she won’t like, because she prefers simpler, more natural, tones. Words need to be understood in both the context of the sentence, and the context of the post. Could she have used a different word? Yes. But the word that she chose, adequately conveys her feelings to her reader.

Sorry – I’m replying to #16, Jessie!!
Jessie says
See here: “What is your favorite activity to do on a girls-only weekend?
I’m a simpleton and my favorite thing about girls-only weekends is lounging around in my pajamas just chattin’ with my favorite ladies.”
Jessie says
or here………”I was motivated to use my acorn squash when I saw that this lil’ baby is the featured ingredient in the Blogger Secret Ingredient contest, currently hosted by Megan this week. I’m not a fancy-dancy chef or an expert photographer, so hopefully this un-glamorous dish will appeal to someone, likely a simpleton like myself. “
Jessie says
She has misused the word before. While I get that it may work here somewhat, I’ve seen it misused in other posts.
Jessie says
Just so you know, simpleton doesn’t mean simple person. It means fool or someone who is deficient in judgment.
Laurie @ Love, Laugh, Laurie says
I’m not a makeup girl — I never think to try new trends.
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I love experimenting with makeup. I love the smokey eye look. I try all the time to perfect my smokey eye. I love that paired with glossy lips. 🙂
Emily says
I’m a blonde too and do my makeup similar to you (powder, bronzer/blush, eyeliner on top lid only). I was intimidated the first time I tried red lipstick, but as long as you wear the right colors and don’t overdo your makeup, it will look great! I like to wear mine with mostly grey or black, but I think it also looks pretty with the mint green color. I am a firm believer in less is more, so you don’t need to have on a face full of makeup to pull off a red lip! Add a touch of gloss and you will be good to go! 🙂
Beks says
Last time I experimented with makeup, I found a tutorial on youtube for Adele’s look. Worked out pretty well, but it was a lot of work. I can never find the energy to actually do my make up, which is sad. I like how I look with it on, I just don’t do it very often.
Ashley @ LibertyBelles says
Yeah I’m scared to try anything too new. But a wedding is a perfect venue for something a little bold and glamorous. Take pictures please!
Katie @ running4cupcakes says
Agreed! Running errand before 9am is the best! Also that bagel looks delicious!
Mary says
I think the key is to get the right shade of red. Maybe go to a makeup counter and they can suggest the right red. That way you can try before you buy. You will look great with color on your lips. Take pics for the fashion page and have a great weekend.
Krystina says
I went to Walmart this morning before 9AM too! SOOOO much nicer that early in the morning! I was in and out in less than 20 min!
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
Yeah, I’m not a makeup trend type of person at all. Unless it’s a special special special occasion, my goal is always to make it look like I’m not wearing makeup, even though I definitely am. I’m all about enhancing, not painting haha.
Anne says
The best thin about the bold lip trend is he rest of your make should be simple! It makes getting ready so easy !
Andrea @ Andrea Out Loud! says
i am horrid with makeup! i once tried to do smokey eyes for HALLOWEEN even and screwed up royally. it looked like i had a black eye haha. im helpless!
Jana @ Newly Wife Healthy Life says
I love experimenting with makeup! I too am nervous of the red lips trend though. Normally I like to do a little bit more on the eye and less on the lip. I think you can definitely pull it off though! 🙂
Melissa says
I feel the same way! I keep my makeup pretty simple- usually only eyeliner and mascara! I feel very silly if I cake on a bunch of stuff before heading out. Usually the only time I’ll try new things is if I have some free time at home and have time to wash it off before I go out!
I’m not too adventurous!
Amanda @ .running with spoons. says
I actually really love playing around with makeup and going for more dramatic looks. I think you just have to be willing to play around with colors a little bit to find out which ones work best for your skin tone and what not. I think most people get discouraged when they see a look they like, try it, and have it not work out… but a lot of the time it’s just because the colors they chose were wrong. Don’t be scared to try 😀
Krysta says
I love the look of a bold lip but sometimes feel it looks a bit much on myself… my tip/trick is blot your lips after you’ve applied the lipstick so it is a little more matte and then apply your favorite clear gloss or even chapstick over top. For me this little step seems to mellow the bold look out a bit for everyday wear but you still get the overall effect you’re going for.
C says
You should either go to a cosmetic counter or try out lipstick on your own at Sephora (they also have a great return policy ). You could also try a berry lip stain to ease yourself into “colored lips”. berry/wine colored is so in this fall.
Leanne says
I too was scared to do the red lip trend, but once I made the leap, I loved it! Some tips for ya:
-Go light on the eye make-up. You seem to follow this rule anyways, so I think your normal routine (mascara & eye-liner) would be just perfect!
-Do a practice run, and then take a picture. We’re so critical of ourselves in the mirror; I find a picture is more like how others will see us, and you’re not all up in your own grill, examining every last detail!
-Going along with the last one, try wearing it around the house and glancing at yourself in the mirror – silly, maybe, but it’ll help you get used to the idea. Then you’ll know if you don’t like it b/c it’s just “new”, or if it really doesn’t work for you!
Good luck, and rock that red lip if you so decide!
Steph @ StephSnacks says
I actually work in the cosmetic industry! Red lipstick needs to be worn with a lipliner underneath to help it stay and not to bleed 🙂 Email me if you ever need any makeup tips!
Angela @ Health's Angel says
Meh, I’m pretty horrible with makeup. I don’t even like wearing it that much but I’m definitely not confident enough to go without it. I feel like I look 10 years old if I don’t have at least mascara on! With that said though, I’m a lot less high maintenance about it than I was in high school. I had to be done up at all times!
The craziest I’ll get is a smoky eye if I’m going out at night. That’s something I can actually do!
Rachel says
I love experimenting with makeup. I don’t really do it too much on myself, but when there’s a right time I go all out 😀
Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed says
I love doing my own eye makeup and both times I’ve gotten it done for a wedding (bridesmaid) I’ve always thought… I could’ve done that even better for free! I hate that.
Candice says
Good luck with finding the right red! Ugh. I have always wanted to try red but have never found the right shade for me. I think you have inspired me to have a weekend project. I just might go on the hunt for my red too!! 🙂
Michelle Tomes says
I just bought some red lipstick a couple of weeks ago! I was a little worried to try it but I’m glad I did! I got so many compliments on it! The whole trick I think is to find the right color red (I got help from the friendly people at the Clinique Makeup counter) and for the rest of your makeup to be really neutral. Also, I think a neutral outfit helps too (like a white button up and jeans- so classic!) Good luck! 🙂
Jessica M. says
Hey Julie 🙂 I always wanted to try a red lip too, but was way to scared! I found that the red shades of the Revlon Lip Butters are a good go-between to try it out! It gives a nice colour without being really dramatic.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles says
I love the darker red lip trend, but I’m terrified that I could not pull it off in a million years.
Nicole says
I wouldn’t say I try the trends, but I d do like playing with makeup. You can always wash it off. I am in love with ANYTHING Urban Decay. I stay away from foundation, anything but concealer, because my face just eats it and I am a mess before lunch. But love playing with the eyes.

That bagel reminds me of the ones I use to get from Einstein Brothers in college. So freaking good and full of cream cheese! Yum.
Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola says
I don’t experiment too much with make-up but do love a smoky eye or a red lip for going out! I’m also a big fan of a dark berry lip and gold/bronze eyeshadow! Working the red lip is all about finding the right shade and texture- I use a chubby Nars lip pencil which is very matte and I think looks better than a shiny red gloss! Just depends on the look you are going for- I had them match me at Sephora though to find the perfect red!

Oooooh you should, I think it will suit you. You’ll have to let us know how you get on! Jx
Ps…been reading for a few weeks now, love the blog!

I think red lipstick is adorable, but I’m always nervous when I wear it! I think the key is to have a pretty neutral face (makeup wise) for the most part and the right shade… and confidence. 🙂
Gretchen @ Honey, I Shrunk the Gretchen! says
If I even told you what my winged-eyeliner look USED to look like when I first started trying it out. Let me just say, you would not be so impressed, hahahaha.
Red lipstick is kind of my jam, though. I had a whole post about it! The trick is just finding a tone of red that suits your skintone. I get red really easily, so finding a red that has almost blue undertones helps cool my look down. For you, your skin is nice and golden so maybe a warmer red would look nice! And I agree with what other people have said — keep the eyes light. Mascara + neutral shadow should be more than enough.
Make sure you post pics if you decide to try it out (uh, duh!)… and don’t forget to do a lipstick-on-teeth check before you leave the house, hahaha.

I don’t do a lot of makeup because I’m afraid of people noticing. I like makeup. It’s super fun! And it’s a creative outlet, but I don’t like people to make a big deal out of it. Because of this I gradually build up to a look. For instance, I have really blonde eyebrows. I can’t pull off a dramatic, fun look without looking like a goober because I appear to be missing my brows in relation to the rest of the look, so I gradually started filling them in and shaping them. It was small changes over the course of time that didn’t flag people for attention because of the sudden difference. Now that they’re used to seeing me with eyebrows and because they remember how I used to look “without them” I can go one day without makeup, the next with cat eyes and red lips, and no one says anything 😀 They’re just used to it. Also, after months of playing with dramatic, fun makeup, people just expect you to look different and accept it much easier. Also, it takes practice. Have fun!!

I wore red lipstick ONE time at my best friends bachelorette party. It was really fun but I felt like people were staring at my lips all night!
