I spent this morning out and about. Running errands before 9 a.m. is a glorious thing because the stores are so quiet and lines are virtually non-existent.
After a quick 5:15 a.m. workout at the gym (I did my Super Fast, Super Sweaty Circuit Workout), I headed home, ate a banana and walked Sadie around the neighborhood with Ryan before heading out for the morning.
My first stop of the day took me to Bagelicious, a local bagel shop, for a toasted pumpkin spice bagel topped with honey walnut cream cheese.
They take their cream cheese seriously and are quite generous with the creamy spread.
I also downed a cappuccino which left me feeling wired!
My friends Leah and Ricky are getting married in St. Petersburg this weekend, and I still needed to get a card for their big day, so after my bagel pit stop, I popped into WalMart since it’s open 24 hours a day. That place is about 10,000 times more pleasant before 9 a.m.
I got sucked into card reading but eventually found a winner before heading toward the checkout line.
And then I got a liiittle sidetracked.
As I was walking by the makeup section, the red lipstick caught my eye. I think red lipstick is so much fun and have always wanted to try it out, but I am rather intimidated by the bold color since my relationship with makeup is a little shaky.
There are so many fun makeup trends that I would love to try but I just don’t feel like I have the skill to pull them off without looking ridiculous.
Like the smoky eye or the winged eyeliner “cat eye” look.
My makeup skills are so limited, so whenever I try something new or more dramatic, I feel so goofy. (I need your help, Gretchen!)
Whenever I’ve had my makeup professionally done in the past, I’ve never really liked it and always felt like I looked overdone. (I didn’t even like my makeup on our wedding day and tried my best to “fix it” before walking down the aisle. Eh.) I’m a simpleton, I guess.
But, after reading your words of encouragement via Instagram and Twitter this morning, I think I might be ready to try the whole red lipstick thing. And if I hate it, there’s always makeup remover!
Questions of the Morning
- Do you enjoy experimenting with makeup?
- Have you tried any fun makeup trends? What did you think of the end result?
Elizabeth says
Lipstick scares the crap out of me! But I think it looks beautiful on women. Can’t wait to see the red on you!
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
I’ve never been big on make up and just use an SPF powder, mascara, and a lil eyeliner only at the tip, so I guess I’m not a big fan of it! But I know that when I get older I might become a little bit more interested in different styles and brands.
And I say, go for the red just so you can someday say, “I tried that thing”. 🙂 But personally, I wouldn’t want to try it on myself because I just don’t like bold things on my face and makes me uncomfortable haha.
Becka @ simplybecka says
I love doing early morning errands too, I just wish more stores where open before 9-10am. Have a great weekend.
Carol T. says
I love makeup and have a large collection of lipsticks and mascaras. My husband laughs at me as I wear makeup to the gym and even wear it to the doctors when I don’t feel well….I guess I can’t leave the house without it…I don’t want to scare anyone….ha, ha,!!
You would look nice with a light red lip gloss… love your blog 🙂
Ashley @ Sweat for Sweets says
What a fun post! I love talking about makeup, clothes, & all things girly!
I’m a little nervous when it comes to trying new trends, too. I usually need to see my friends try it first before I’m willing to give it a go! For some reason, I’m usually more willing to try dramatic eyes than lips.. the lips just don’t suit me and my boyfriend usually doesn’t like it either! I think you could pull off BOTH looks, though! You should def try out the cat eyes and red lips .. can’t wait to see the result!
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
I’ve just jumped on the red lipstick bandwagon, too! Just make sure the rest of your make-up is really simple, and it’ll look great!
Tracey says
Try out a lip stain first! I swear by them. A little subtler than a bold lipstick, needs no reapplication, and doesn’t leave a mark on coffee cup, wine glass, etc. You can get them in so many shades, a nice berry color is perfect for fall. And I mix in a coral tone in the spring.
Annette@FitnessPerks says
Do it! I went bold with a pink the other day, and it was perfect for the outfit. I want to try the ‘peach’ trend and I also want to hit up the red shade too. Hopefully soon!
Jackie says
I’m really partial to red lip gloss instead of lipstick. The bolder the color, the more waxy I think it looks, but that isn’t the case with lip gloss since it isn’t opaque. It seems a bit softer. Plus, it’s much easier to blot if you want to take it down a notch.
Sarah says
I have NO idea how to do my own makeup. I can pretty much put on mascara (which I do about once a month) and eyeliner if my friends help me and I usually still end up looking like a raccoon. I don’t wear makeup because I don’t know how to do it in such a way that I look natural but I did get it done for my senior prom and I liked the way the makeup artist did it. I feel like if you can get away with not wearing any, why shouldn’t you?
Khushboo says
Smoky eyes are my fave!!
allison says
Bold makeup is all about owning it! If you think and act like its totally natural to have bright red lips then no one will think anything different:):):)
Rachel says
I keep my makeup routine pretty simple.
Tinted moisturizer, concealer, blush and a neutral eye shadow. I try to remember to do mascara but I need to buy a new one since it recently fell in the toilet!
If I’m going out then I’ll put eyeliner on a make my eyes a little more dramatic.
Laura @ LauraLikesDesign says
Mmm, I just had a pumpkin bagel the other day from Bruegger’s! They even had pumpkin cream cheese as well! Such a tasty treat!
Leigh says
I always have to take a napkin to my lips (you know like kissing the napkin?) whenever I wear a super bold color. It tames the color slightly.
And WOW I’ve never seen so much cream cheese on one bagel before lol
Casey says
I finally decided to just go for it on the red lipstick. I bought red skinny jeans around the same time and love wearing the two together—i get lots of compliments! The lipstick is fun and makes me feel pretty on a dinner date 🙂
Natalie @ Free Range Human says
YOu are so right about Walmart. I was there at 8:30 this morning and it was actually tolerable!
Meghan @ After the Ivy League says
I’m the same way with makeup! Totally clueless. Whenever my friends come over to get ready before a night out and see my makeup “stash” they’re horrified. Basically mascara, eye liner, and free sample clinique eye shadows is all I have. It’s pretty bad haha.
Michelle says
I very rarely make up these days and when I do it’s always the same old thing. I’m so rubbish at it! I should really do one of those one on one lessons!
Lisa says
Whenever I try out a new trend, like makeup colors or skinny jeans(!), I always remind myself that while it is out of my comfort zone and new to me, someone passing me on the street doesn’t know that and to them this is the way I look every day! I’m also my own worst critic and somethings that I don’t think I’m pulling off I end up getting the most complements on. Go figure!
Julianna @ Julianna Bananna says
i’ve always wanted to try both the winged eyeliner and the red lipstick!! but unfortunately i am NOT good at putting on makeup so the chances of me actually getting the winged eyeliner right are verrrryy slim. maybe one day i’ll go for the red lipstick, though!
Taryn says
We JUST had this conversation at work.. about the bright red lipstick. One of the girls in my office said that no one says anything when her sister (a hairdresser and makeup artist) wears it, but someone always makes a comment when she does. I guess it just works for some and not for others.
I’m with you though.. I just don’t have enough skill to make most of these trends work. I wish I did though!
Marielle says
Yes I’m pretty simple with my makeup too and haven’t really been taught how to do anything correctly….I wish I could have a makeup lesson really. 🙂
Ashley says
Hey I hear ya, But I tend to play around with Makeup on nights when Im bored and just want to stay in.
I wear the winged Eyeliner and it takes a little getting used to but my morning makeup routine is simple and easy and takes no time..
-Wash my face with a makeup remover cloth
-apply foundation
-Appy Eyeliner (Dark Brown)
-Apply Mascara
-dust with a light bronzer and viola… On occassions I want more drama I just amp up the eyeliner or add a brown shadow…
You can be subtle and still follow trends… I cant do a smokey eye but I do whats best for me and makes me feel comfortable…
Plus your so darn cute you don’t need makeup!!!! 😉
ashley says
I have always wanted to try lipstick but I too feel way overdone. I have been in multiple weddings and after the first two where I got my makeup professionally done, I said no more. I do my own now! I am getting married in a year (from today!!) and Im worried about hiring a makeup artist.
I tried curling my hair with my straightener and my fiance could smell burning hair down the hall..oops! I stick to the curling ironing!
Ali @ WHOLEistically Fit says
I’m the same way with makeup. Give me a little powder & mascara and I’m good-to-go ;). Simpletons unite! In fact, I’m such a simpleton that there’s no way I could even begin to figure out how to accomplish that beautiful fishtail braid from your other post. Those & braids in general have always been an enigma to me. I’ve even resorted to trying to have my husband braid my hair for me. (No joke!) The sad part is, it was bad, but not as bad as the braid I tried to accomplish myself. lol 😀
Janine says
I am six months pregnant and you have just made me obsessed with finding a pumpkin bagel!
🙂
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
I keep things pretty basic when it comes to make up! I just started wearing eyeshadow more regularly, which I haven’t done since like, high school!
Erica says
Try the red! Walmart has a great return policy! When you are experimenting with it, hold on to the packaging, and if you hate it return packaging + product for a full refund! That is the Canadian policy, so I would expect the same in the US!
I think you can rock the red. AND winged eyeliner – if you master that craft please share your tips!

I’m with you on the cat eye. LOVE the look, afraid to wear it in public. My client sent me this tutorial:
Cat eyes are all over the fall runways, but this trend dates back to the Cleopatra Era! See how this versatile look can take you from day to night to Halloween in 5 easy steps.
DAY: 1.Use Stardust eye shadow from Arbonne’s Comet Cosmetics Collection all over lid.
2.Apply Black Liquid Eye Liner from inner corner all the way out – angle slightly upward.
3.Finish off with Triple Action Mascara on top and bottom lashes to complete the look.
NIGHT: 4.Channel your inner Cleopatra and substitute Solar for Stardust (Comet Collection) to add a hint of Cleo gold.
HALLOWEEN: 5.For a costume twist, use Arbonne’s Black Eye Liner to draw on cat whiskers. Meow!
I thought it was hilarious and doable. She sells Arbonne, so it lists their products.

Yup, moved here in April 2011. Thought I would give it a try and after the initial culture shock I decided to stay.

(Got cut off, sorry!) Excited to discover new places which you rave about. As a former New Yorker I get nervous over trying bagels down here. However I’ve heat nothing but great things about Bagelicous so far! And I love all things beauty, my skills are completely self taught. You can have so much fun with makeup while keeping things simple. Just play around and before you know it your confidence will grow!

Bek @ Crave says
I’m with you, I’m very conservative with make up and intimidated with all the different trends. My skills are pretty shabby and I always feel like I’m way too over done when I wear make up, since typically it’s minimal make up (mascara and eyeliner for my eyebrows) daily.
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I’m so awful with makeup. At least beyond my usual “day-time” look. My friends often say they want to do my makeup if we’re going to go out and are able to successfully give me the smoky eye but I’m pretty sure I can’t do that nearly as well on myself. As for the red lipstick, I don’t think I could do it. I don’t really even like ANY color on my lips. i’m so boring…or can we at least call it “natural”? 😉
Aurielle @ Will2Wellness says
I’m always watching YouTube makeup tutorials! I would love to be able to perfect the smokey eye technique!
@pluvk says
I did the same thing at my wedding! I felt too overdone, and my bridesmaid and I were both wiping off all the excess blush before heading into the limo. Halfway through the ceremony, my false eyelash started flapping in the wind! I keep teasing my hubby that we have to have a redo!
Whitney says
I too am a bit of a simpleton when it comes to makeup and recently went to Sephora to have them pick out a good red for me. They were wonderful, I would totally recommend going there and see what they suggest.
Trish says
I used to wear makeup all the time, but now only for special times. Even when I try new trends it never looks the same and I end up with my basic application. As for red lipstick…. Haven’t had the guts to try that yet.
Melissa says
When I first read the post title, I thought it said “Imitating Makeup Trends,” which for some reason didn’t sound like you. I agree that I want to try many looks with make up, but what keeps me from doing it is either having no idea how to make that nice pic on Pinterest become reality on my face or just not having time to experiment. I also totally feel you about feeling “goofy.” Stuff just doesn’t look the same when you do it yourself or even if it looks good, it’s not what you really look like so it’s weird. But I do encourage you to wear the red lipstick!
Mary says
Coincidentally, I had a wedding that I went to today, and I also rocked the red lipstick! I feel like it works best on me when I wake up my inner Catwoman. It always makes me feel super vamped up and sexy, which isn’t bad every now and then.
Ida says
haha I can’t do makeup either, at least nothing fancy. I don’t even wear makeup on an everyday basis, only for parties. I’m probably the only one at my age (25) :p when I was little I used to steal my moms very pink lipstick, I loved it! But I’m not sure I could rock a hot pink or red lipstick. I’d sure like to try though.
Amanda @ Run Principessa says
I am so awful with makeup. I saw my face done up for prom and actually started to have a panic attack because I thought I looked so awkward and awful. I started wiping away at it frantically two seconds before my date knocked on the door. There may have been some teenage hissy-fitting too.
I guess I’m a little spastic. 😉
