A smoothie, on the other hand, sounded fantastic!
In the mix (for one smoothie):
- 1 c. milk
- 1 1/2 frozen banana
- 2 tbsp. peanut butter
- 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
About 30 minutes after we were done drinking our respective smoothies, we felt a little cooler and downed a plate of Alexia sweet potato fries with ketchup.
It’s hard to believe these babies come out of a bag in the freezer. They honestly taste like restaurant-style fries!
Our fries were consumed over an intense game of Scrabble.
Believe it or not, we got through all the letters and tied. We both had relatively low scoring games, but at least we were on the same page!
Playing Scrabble this evening reminded me just how much I love game nights. When Ryan and I eventually have a family, I hope we have kids who enjoy playing Scattergories, Taboo, Cranium, Uno… you know basically every game ever made. (Except Monopoly. Hate that one.)
Questions of the Evening
- What was your favorite game when you were a kid?
- What is your favorite game now?
When I was little, my favorite game was Candy Land. It was my goal in life to be Queen Frostine. As an adult, I love Taboo and Scattergories!
Anna @ Acquainted With The Night says
I didn’t have a family who played games and had game night, BUT I want to do that when I have kids! 😀
I LOVE scattergories and apples to apples so fun and silly when you’re dead tired!
steph says

Lindsey @ Happy or Hungry says
My favourite game when I was a kid was CANDY LAND!!! I died for that game.
My fave word games have always been Boggle and Scrabble, hands down. I love playing Scrabble with my boyfriend because I feel we are equally skilled and the game can go either way.
But my fave game of all time is Pictionary! I can’t get enough! I could play it day and night.
Lauren B. says
My husband and I play Scrabble quite a bit, and have even been playing Words with Friends on our i Phones.
I am totally cheese-bally and want to instill family game nights when we have kids, too. A family fav is Catch Phrase. It always makes an appearance at Christmas!
Sylvia @ Frolic Through Life says
As a kid, I loved Trouble and Sorry. Now I love Scrabble and play it on my phone all the time!
STUFT Mama says
I LOVED the game Life. The cool little people in your car, etc. I felt so grown up. If only it was that easy. ha ha ha! Now………. shoot, I don’t know. I can’t remember the alst time I played a game. Does playing “find where my 1 1/2 year old twins put the TV remote” count???
Whitney says
I loved LIFE- I always skipped college to get to the end as fast as I could…and filled my car up with as many kids as I could fit! haha
I OBVIOUSLY understood the purpose of the game! 🙂
Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food says
haha! good for you for playing such an intellectual game on a weeknight 🙂 I was never as good at word games as my brothers or mom but I did love scattergories and hobbledehoy.
I wish we had oven like temps here in Chicago. I know its weird but I love sweltering heat! 😛
Danica says
I Love playing board and card games, too. Scattergories is one of my favorites, but I also love Telestrations (this is a Must-Try if you haven’t played before!), Last Word, Loaded Questions, and I’ve always loved Clue.
Claire @ NavigatingNorth says
Hi Julie! Can I just say I think it’s AWESOME you do smoothies for dinner (they just sound SOO good sometimes!)…and I am glad you are a game dork-o like me 🙂 Honestly, games are such a great night in idea!
My favorite is scategories or yahtzee! We always do yahtzee on Thanksgiving and X-mas eve…super fun!
Jackie says
Hi Julie! I read your blog daily 🙂 I’ve noticed that you use protein powder very often for your delicious looking smoothies. I have heard of a lot of negative effects of using the powder (specifically whey powder). Have you read into this at all?
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Sometimes I feel like a nerd but I looove games too!
Jaime says
I LOVED when facebook had scrabble…maybe they still do, but that was the big thing with all of my friends a couple of years ago. I also have a new catch phrase obsession. So much fun!
Gabby says
So funny – I always say I hate board games, but I love all of the games you listed.
There’s some difference between typical board games and games like Scattergories.
And yeah, Monopoly stinks.
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
seriously nate and i CANNOT play scrabble against eachother. it can get kind of ugly…and so what if it’s all from my side? i’m an intense scrabbler 😉
Nathan Miller says
Ha…You would fill your scrabble board with mostly Food Items and names…very nice…
But for sure one of the greatest games as a kid was Guess Who! http://www.hasbro.com/games/kid-games/guesswho/default.cfm?page=Products/Detail&product_id=9442
And now the greatest game to play is Apples to Apples…best party game ever invented.
Chelsea says
It’s all about that words with friends on smart phones =D so addictive!
Paige - Everyday Belle says

Gina G says

Now I love love love Blokus and playing LCR with my family 😀
Abby says
My favorite game as a child was Monopoly. I was the biggest sore loser on Earth! lol. My family would go on and on about the fits I used to throw. My current favorite is Scrabble. My boyfriend’s family got me hooked on it. They even make up “Scrabble Names” that they go by instead of their normal names. lol. Mine was Chai Queen.
courtney @ the granola chronicles says
My family was all about game nights growing up! Smartass (so fun – google it!) Boxers & Briefs and Apples to Apples are great games for parties. So fun!
Rachel @ The Perseverance Diaries says
My favorite game as a kid was Pretty Pretty Princess, so cheesy but so fun haha.
Favorite game now…Twister, drunk in college I guess? Hahaha. Or maybe scrabble now that I am out of college and a “mature adult”
peanutbutterfingers says
I loved Pretty Pretty Princesses too!!!!
Danielle says
As a kid it was Aggravation and now it’s Phase 10.
Joanna says
I used to love Mall Madness, but having two brothers did not work in my favor for having enough people willing to play it too often.
peanutbutterfingers says
I remember that one! Did you also play Dream Phone?
Joanna says
Oh of course! But I didn’t have that one. There was no way I would get my brothers to play that, so it made more sense to splurge for Mall Madness.
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I loved Candyland! Such a great game 🙂 Although Operation was fun too. even though that buzzer scared the heck out of me when you’d touch the sides.
Jamie aka "Sometimes Healthy Girl" says
Smoothies for dinner. I like it!
My fave game growing up was Monopoly (so sad you did not like it!) but it was the less serious Monopoly, Junior Monopoly. I also liked Candyland, Hungry Hippos and Mouse Trap.
Now I haven’t played a board game in a while. I should have a game night 🙂

Mmmm smoothies for dinner are always a great call!
Oh, I was OBSESSED with Candy Land… but I never played the right way! I just kept picking cards until I got the Snow Queen [or something like that] and then would declare that I had won. Sooo the game was over from then!

Alisa @ Running with Knives says
When I was younger, I was obsessed with Guess Who. Now I’m a big fan of Cranium and Catch Phrase. But I do have to admit I own an embarrassingly large amount of pre-school games. Relatively new ones at that. They are still a lot of fun and my friends and I play them at happy hour to relieve stress.
peanutbutterfingers says
Yes! Catch Phrase is so fun!
Rebecca says
Life and Clue have always, and still do, have my heart! Of course, UNO attack is a favorite, too.
Kim says
Ah! I hate monopoly too! I think its because I always lose and then worry that if I can’t be successful in monopoly how will ever win at real life LOL – pathetic that I’ve seriously considered the validity of that concern
Kim says
Oh and I meant to also say that we get those fries all the time – they are extra delish if you sprinkle with a little curry before baking 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
Oh yum!
Alaina says
I loved Scattegories when I was a kid.
Now, I love playing Apples to Apples…while drinking wine. 🙂
Faith @ lovelyascharged says

I’m definitely having game nights in the future 🙂
E says
I love the idea of game night, too! My parents never really liked to play games with me as a kid (or now 😉 ) My favorites then (and now) were Trivial Pursuit & Scattergories. I never really cared for Monopoly, either… Oh, Life is good, too.
Nicole @sugarcoatedsisters says
I used to love playing Guess Who, Chutes & Ladders, and The Game of Life.
To be honest, though, I was a TOTAL computer geek and loved computer games the most. Reader Rabbit, Age of Empires, Roller Coaster Tycoon… now we’re talkin’!
kelsey says
Scrabble is a family favorite for us. We get really intense – Scrabble dictionary and all. I love it! I also love Rummicube, Phase 10, Cranium, and card games. When I was younger, I loved playing LIFE with my girlfriends. We would combine it with MASH and decide who our husbands were, where we lived, kids names… stories of our whole adult lives. Aah, memories!
Hayley @ hayley daily says
I loved Candy Land as a kid. 🙂
Now, I love Taboo and Apples to Apples. So fun! Though, I can’t turn down a game of Scrabble, either.
