Today’s workout made my arms feel like Jello!
I had Ryan take a few minutes to show me two different moves on the TRX and incorporated them into my upper body workout.
I did TRX bicep curls…
(Model is wearing only a sports bra. Oh the irony!)
And TRX tricep extensions…
(Source)
The stabilization required to do these moves definitely worked my arms out in a new way and I liked them a lot! I would love to incorporate the TRX into my workouts more often and plan to research more exercises to try and have Ryan show me a few more.
In the end my upper body workout included the following exercises:
- Superset one: Push ups + Bicep curls
- Superset two: Mac raises + TRX bicep curls
- Superset three: TRX tricep extensions + Upright rows
- Superset four: Overhead press + Lat pull downs
- Superset five: Chest press + tricep extensions
- Ryan’s awesome shoulder move
Breakfast
Today’s breakfast was a new take on a typical egg sandwich.
I topped a toasted whole wheat English muffin with Tribe Mediterranean Hummus, avocado slices and a fried egg.
I feel like this is a sandwich that would be a great breakfast, lunch or dinner sandwich. Multipurpose!
And now it’s time to make lunch! Lunchtime totally snuck up on me today and it feels kind of funny to be posting about breakfast when I’m really just thinking about my next meal.
Questions of the Morning
- Have you ever tried using TRX straps? If not, do they intrigue you at all? If so, do you know of any specific exercises I should try?
I LOVE TRX classes. My shoulders have never been so defined as they are now. Also? you kinda get to feel a bit like a monkey. Which is fun because I like bananas.
That egg sandwich looks delish!! You’re totally right – it could go for any meal!
I love TRX straps too. It’s awesome you can get such a great workout and work so many different muscles with such a small piece of equipment.
I’d love to try TRX! I’m always reading about how effective it is – sounds like you got a great workout 🙂
I always want to do the TRX straps but really don’t know what to do with them correctly so I’m afraid to try. Someday I’ll suck it up and make a fool of myself until I figure out what’s right : )
YESS!! they are SO HARD! my trainer used to make me do them for bball conditioning !
I love TRX! I love how hard they are and what a great workout your muscles get!!!
I’ve always wanted to use them, but they intimidate me. I feel like I need someone to show me how to use them, so i do not a) embarass myself extensively b) hurt myself by doing the exercises incorrectly.
But they look like they work a person out like no other way!
i agree! i really wish my gym had a class.
TRX is great! I think one of the most difficult exercises on it is you do a plank with your feet in the TRX (so they’re off the ground) & then you raise your bum so that you are in an upside down V position then back down to plank.
I took an 8 week TRX class it was amazing – you could put ur feet in straps too and do planks, pushups, pull your knees in and that will work ur hams. Also lean back and use your arms to pull your body up into into a V shape or kind of like ur body is coming into a Y. There are so many!!!
I haven’t tried TRX straps but I really like the idea of just using your own bodyweight…is that what this does? If so, I want to look into it! I have become a huge proponent of using our own mass/size as the “perfect” weight for exercise.
That sandwich looks really really good. I’m feeling creative this morning…hence my picnik ability on my post haha: http://www.navigatingnorth.com/2011/10/my-vault-secrets-secrets.html …and was wondering…have you ever made english muffins? I think it would be something fun to try…I bet it’s not easy though! Have a fun day!
yes! it’s all bodyweight! i’ve never tried making english muffins – they seem intimidating!
I have never tried the TRX straps but they look like a great workout!
I love avocado’s on sandwiches!
That sandwich looks amazing. I LOVE avocado!!
Our gym has a thing called the Ring of Fire and has those straps for endless varieties of exercises. Once in a while, my trainer throws me in there. You can do some good leg work believe it or not. Holding on to those and doing a sort of speed skater move. Also, put your feet in the straps and do reverse crunches, bringing your legs in while in a sort of plank position. All kinds of things. TORTURE.
The Kidless Kronicles
I’ve never tried a TRX workout, but it sounds great! 🙂 Your breakfast looks delish!
They have a TRX thing (not class, just the eqiupment) at my gym, and I’ve always wondered what it was, and what it was for…thank you for enlightening me, lol! 😛
It sounds awesome, and really intense – I’d be stoked to give it a go next time I’m at the gym…those exercises you did seem like a fab starting point! 🙂
Your breakfast today looks sooo good! Which English muffins do you use? Just curious – they’re,like, my favourite bread product ever! So good! 😀 xyx
I did Ryans awesome shoulder move yesterday (just 5 on each side)…ouch!! Would love to see more of his workout tips!
I love those moves on the trx bands, I can always feel it after!!
Mmm I love multipurpose sandwiches! I feel like I eat sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner some days!
I love the TRX…definitely leaves me sore every time. Some of my fave exercises are hamstring curls, body rows, tucks and pikes for abs. If you learn any cool new moves, definitely share with us.
I’ve never tried the TRX before! Great lookingg egg sammie 🙂
I LOVE trx… though I haven’t beenable to use them in quite a while since I am no longer close enough to my old trainer!
You can do great core workouts with the system too. Put yourself in a high plank and then put your feet into the straps. You can hold it there.. bring your knees into your chest, or swing both legs to the right, then back to center, then back to the left!
I’m gonna be totally honest- I’m always thinking about my next meal :P. And I have a feeling it’s gonna be something similar if not completely the same as your deeeelicious lookin’ sandwich up there!
I did a lower body workout today but what you’ve got up there definitely sounds like what I wanna do tomorrow. So hey! Two birds with one stone: my dinner, and my workout for tomorrow. Just another reason why I love your blog! 😀
A personal trainer at my old gym was bored and gave me a one-on-one TRX session last year. I was so sore I could barely move for several DAYS after! Try a TRX plank (put your legs in the straps to keep your feet above the ground). Then pull your legs into your chest and back out again. INSANE.
I LOVE the TRX. Well, in a love/hate kind of way. I take a TRX based boot camp on Wednesdays, and it is so hard, but awesome! I would suggest doing 1 legged squats and all of your ab work on there.
abs + TRX = glorious pain
We just got TRX at goodlife this week! Not sure how I feel about the moves, I’m debating signing up for the free trial just to see what it’s all about 🙂
I LOVE TRX! I bought the straps for my brother as a Christmas present, hoping he would hate it and give it to me…fail. He loves it and hoards the straps, but I knock out some killer workouts with them when I get the opportunity. Have you tried atomic push ups yet? Rockin. Enjoy!
no! i’m scared!
DIdn’t you say a while back that Ryan was working on a fitness website, or something like that? I don’t recall ever seeing you post what it was!
yes! he was, but it has fallen to the wayside for the time being b/c his job is pretty demanding. hopefully one day!
i love the avocado/egg combo!
i used trx straps with a trainer once to do some brutal ab moves.
I’ve done quite a bit of TRX training and I really like it – it’s definitely a humbling experience! I know that jello feeling you’ve described. It hurts, but oh so good! 🙂
One class I participate in sometimes will use the TRX straps for strength training. The possibilities are endless. I LOVE LOVE LOVE these suckers!!!!
I haven’t. They have them at my gym, but only a few and the class is always full. They look like they would provide a great workout!
I love, love, LOVE TRX! It has completely rebuilt my abs. Sometimes my husband just pokes them in awe now. And in the model’s defense, TRX makes you sweat balls, so the sports bra is acceptable! 😉
How fun, Julie!! I’ve never tried them since I don’t go exercise at the gym, but that’s one of the 1st things I’d love to try. It looks so fun, and I feel like it could be such a good way to work out and get multifunctional moves in.
We have aTRX room at my gym, but you cannot use the straps unless your taking a class or with a trainer!
The class is a great workout and is offered as a 30 or 60 minute session.
My favorite exercize is putting your feet in the straps and making a plank, then while staying in plank position tucking your knees up to your chest then moving them left, back to center, right 12 times! It really works you out and tests your core!
I love TRX too! So great 🙂
That sandwich could totally be eaten almost any time. YUMM!
Hummus, egg, AND avocado? That’s like THE ULTIMATE SANDWICH.
I haven’t tried TRX because I’m not at a “big” gym… yet!! 🙂 The straps are a little intimidating to me though!
I am a TRX ambassador! Check out my article at
http://www.jacquelinegaray.com/trx-suspension-training-anywhere-anytime/
and keep using it! its also great with the ripper, ropes, and kettlebell
did you try the atomic push up or pendulum swings yet? I think we talked about this last time 🙂 my fave is also one legged lunges, its a crazy leg/balance/core workout!
Have a good weekend 🙂
I Love TRX! all three of the trainers I’ve had worked them into our workouts! It always makes things more fun, and I love that it works a specific muscle, plus your core for stabilization!
I took a TRX class once with my GRAND-FATHER at his gym last year, he brought me as his guess. My GRAND-FATHER was taking it twice a week! 🙂 I loved the class, but it was too much for my budget (the super expensive gym + the class) and the schedule was totally off. However, I have to say that my grand-father is a super hero to me!
I just used one the other day. A trainer offered to show it to me and I ended up getting a free session-SCORE! He had me do ab exercises, regular squats and single leg squats with the bands too. He also had me work my obliques by turning sideways and lifting atright up-killer!
Ha! Someone’s not still a little touchy about the sports bra spectacle/discussion from this morning, are they? 😉 That convo is long over but just wanted to add that the most important part of the gym is that you are there and not to let others’ demeanor/use of the gym get to you! I swear, half of the gyms out there are just alternatives to the bar scene so you can’t blame a gal for trying!
Mal and I are trying TRX tomorrow! Wahoo!
JULIE! TRX is AMAZING! I love to work my core
Give these a go!
1 stick each foot in a handle (while sitting on the floor) Turn around in a plank and do A) mtn, climbers B) Pikes C) in a plank swing your hips side to side
Also SQUATS!
Holding both handles, lean back as far as you can tap your bum on the floor and jump (air squats)
Loop the handles holding with right hand. facing wall open with left arm keeping feet parallel, squat and reach back behind you then come up reaching left arm up onto your toes (almost like a bow and arrow movement)–>this one is a little tough to explain..
I have a ton of movements for it!!
love! glad your liking them as well!
TRX rocks! 🙂 I totally want one for my house. And.. hummus and egg sandwich? Your creations always impress me! 🙂
I try to incorporate TRX exercises as much as I can. My favourite is the TRX plank. It’s a killer!
Teach me your TRX moves next time you come home! I want in! And that sandwich looks very delicious!
I just started doing a functional training class that uses TRX straps and I love them. Actually, I kind of hate them while they’re kicking my butt, but afterwards I love the burn!
Your breakfast looks great! I love that you added avocado to it. 🙂
I have never done TRX (or heard of it!) but my bleacher club often works out with straps like the ones in the picture. The tricep extension are KILLER! So are knee ins with your feet in the straps…talk about leave your abs sore! It’s amazing how many different excercises you can do on them.
Oh I LOVE the idea of the hummus and avocado with egg! How have I never thought of that?!
