My mom was here… and then, just like that, she’s gone again!
(That picture makes me want to go back to London!)
My mom arrived in Ocala around 11 a.m. and we spent the next few hours together working on some personal business.
We made sure to take time to meet up with Ryan for lunch at Crisper’s where we all ordered salads.
I ordered the southwest salad with blackened chicken, corn, black beans, tomatoes, carrots and green peppers.
After lunch, my mom and I got back to business and ran some errands before she had to get back on the road with Sadie.
Sadie will be spending the weekend with my parents since Ryan and I will be running our little hearts out in Savannah.
Speaking of Savannah, I checked the weather forecast for the morning of our race this afternoon…
For us Florida folks, temperatures in the 40s are cold, but I like running in chilly weather about 10,000 times more than weather that makes me feel like my skin is going to melt off my bones.
I’m thinking I’ll wear running capris, a dri-fit tank and a long-sleeved lightweight hoodie on race day. I’ll probably bring a fleece with me to the race site, but leave it at the bag check before we run.
I’m not very experienced in chilly-weather running, but I’m pretty sure temperatures close to 50 degrees are ideal for distance races.
I know this may sound crazy, but I feel like I’m almost as excited about the race expo as I am about the race itself.
Check out the description:
For two days, over 60 exhibitors will offer free samples, showcase the latest in running gear, sports apparel, health & nutritional information and much more.
I didn’t even know what a race expo was until last year when I attended one before the Chicago Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon. Now I know that they’re jam packed with free samples and booths filled with awesome workout gear. So much fun!
I think I’m ready to be in Savannah now.
Mary @ food and fun on the run says
Race expos are the best! They have so many good deals there for sure!
Looks like perfect weather! Bring an extra pair of socks when you are just hanging around at the start for your hands. Then just toss them when you start. Its sooo nice to not have freezing hands 🙂
Good luck at the race!!!
Melissa says
AHHHH!!! Have so much fun, Julie! And as a Michigan girl, I can tell you that that weather will be perfect for your race! Good luck to you & Ryan! 🙂 Run your little heart out!
{and be sure to stock up on those free samples!!}
Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun says
Eeee! I’m so excited. And the weather is going to be PERFECT.
Brandi @ The Vitamin Bee says
50 degrees is considered the “perfect” race temperature!
You might want to stop off at a thrift store for some cheap throw away clothes so you stay warm before the race starts.
Good luck!
Nikki says
Oh Savannah! I love it there. I really wanted to do this race last year, but I didn’t find out about it in time to start training for it. I have such a love hate relationship with running. 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
i have the same kind of relationship with running. 🙂
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers says
Woohoo – that’s good racin’ weather!
Caitlin says
That salad sure looks tasty – what a generous helping of protein!
Casey @ Pocket Full of Sunshine says
Yay! You will have so much fun. 🙂 And it doesn’t sound crazy at all. I love race expos almost as races too! They get me so excited!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I love race expos!! So many things to look at , but the best thing to remember is not to try any of the new things on race day! Fortunately I’ve never had to learn that the hard way, but I know some people who have. Glad you had fun with your mom!
Amanda says
That weather sounds ideal for running. Good luck! 🙂
Nicole says
Expo’s are the BEST. I go to Expo’s of races I am not even running! But then I go easy on the free stuff. I figure the free stuff is to offset the race fee’s.
Good Luck in Savannah!!!

Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
It looks like the weather will be PERFECT in my opinion!! Sunny and cool… love it. The expo sounds like so much fun – I’d be way excited too!
Tamara says
I live in Savannah(not running the race though), and I know the race starts on Bay street(which is down by the river). Prepare for it to feel much colder down there by the water!
Good luck!
peanutbutterfingers says
brr! are you going to watch the runners tomorrow?
Tamara says
I’d like to, but I have to work! Plus, I live outside of Savannah(in Pooler) so getting downtown would be a trick in and of itself since the whole area is shut down.
Sylvia @ Frolic Through Life says
The race expo sounds like a lot of fun. I love running in chilly weather. During the summer running seems like a chore, but now with the weather in the 50s it’s run and relaxing.
Leslie says
Think back to your days living in the beautiful state of Illinois. That is seriously the best running weather ever. Yes, a bit chilly at the start, but a mile in you won’t even notice!
Best of luck to you, you’ll be great!
Sara says
I would skip the lightweight hoodie, unless you don’t mind tying it around your waist if you get hot. I just ran a half, it was 49 degrees at the start and warmed up to 52, I wore shorts and a shortsleeve t-shirt and was perfect. Maybe try some arm warmers (or socks as arm warmers) if you think your arms will get cold, but I think in the 2 layers of shirts you will definitely overheat. I’d definitely have a throw away shirt for at the start though, especially if you’ll be standing around for a while. Good luck!
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
I’m running in Chicago’s Perfect 10 (a 10 mile race) next weekend, and it will be my first race expo!! I’m so excited for free samples – I LOVE free stuff!
peanutbutterfingers says
i heard that race is awesome!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Wahoo–sounds like great running weather to me!
Your salad looks seriously delicious! I bet that was fun having your mom in town for a bit 🙂 Moms rule.
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
that salad combo is pretty much all of my favorite things!
i think that weather looks perfect for running. you always want to err on the side of cold.
Lara says
If you’re going to be running hard, you might actually get warm. I live in AZ so I know those low temps seem scary but if it’s getting into the high 50’s while you’re still running it will feel perfect! I would wear shorts and a t-shirt or tank top but bring sweats and a jacket from Goodwill that you can toss aside. Also, at Goodwill every day they have a “color” (usually shown on the window or right when you walk in) where anything with a tag that color is 50% off. Most races will collect the discarded clothing and donate it. So you can basically borrow a sweatshirt for $1.50!!
Lara says
Oh another tip is to get long socks and cut off the toe to make throw-away arm warmers 🙂
Heather@girlyeverafter says
I always seem to wear more than I need, but I think you’ll be good with a long sleeve and tank. 13 miles warms you up quick;)
Jillian D. says
I’m running the Savannah full marathon this weekend!!! I hope to see you there – what coral are you in?
The weather does look gorgeous but I’m sure it’s going to be CHILLY waiting to start and REALLY hot when we finish. I’ve got the jitters too. Good luck!!!
Jamie @ getalivingsense says
Good luck in Savannah! My parents live there now and are actually volunteering at the race! I think handing out water cups..I got really excited and told them my favorite blogger is runnign it! 😉

Good luck with the race! And 50’s is definitely perfect running weather.
Love expos! They always have stuff I can’t find in my local racing store. I just always spend too much there!
Brittney says
I’m always so bummed when my mom leaves after a visit. What would we do without our mamas?
And that is perfect running weather, your amount of clothing sounds like you’ll be just fine!
Emily says
Race expos are half the fun of racing, in my opinion! Enjoy every minute of it.
And it sounds like your running attire will be perfect- you and Ryan are going to kick butt on Saturday!
Jamie @ CollegeGirlCooking says
Tina, from faithfitnessfun is running this race too! I sound like a creep, but you are both two of my favorite bloggers! Do you know her?
Sweet and Savvy says
Sure you’ll have a great time!! :)Good luck!
Molly says
I’ve always heard dress 20 degrees warmer than the actual temperature… Looks like great race day weather! Have fun!
Amy says
Your opening sentence led me to believe that your mom had passed away.. my jaw dropped! Thank goodness everyone is alive and ok!
Katie says
Good luck with your race on Saturday! I hope everything is okay with you & your family!
LeeAnn says
Maybe take a pair of cheap throw away mittens or old sock to stick on your hands for the start. I hate cold hands when I start a run! Good luck 😀
heatherb says
my heart sank a little when i read your first sentence, but then i figured out what was going on 🙂
best wishes on the race. you can also buy a cheapy sweatshirt at a thrift store, then throw it off. did that for a half/full marathon we have here in fresno. the organizers later gather everything and donate’m. but yeah, cool weather is def. best to run in. my body functions so much better.
enjoy savannah! on my list of places to visit. check out paula deen’s restaurant if you’re able. might see now if they have any open reservations.
i have grand dreams to run the ing new york marathon next fall and raise funds for the national stroke association.

Hey Julie! I know you love the Biebs and was listening to this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEuQU6a90Pc&ob=av3e
have you heard it? I think you’d like it! Could be a good song to add to your 1/2 marathon play list!
Claire says
I know I just posted on your AM post (I’m behind today)…but like I said over there, my #1 for exercise gear is getting pants that my butt doesn’t eat! haha. Sorry.
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
I freaking love race expos. I’ve worked at the one for the Shamrock Shuffle and the one for the Chicago Marathon, and you’re totally right: they are the JAM. It’s everything I love about the active sports/running community all in one place. So fabulous.
Roz @ Fit Blogging for Fun, Family & Profit says
Yep the expo sounds exciting too, love freebies! At least moving to Ocala helped to put that cold running into your blood a bit sooner than down here in O-town. Have fun!
Corrie Anne says
Hooray! That looks like great race weather!!!
Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn says
You your momma and your sister are seriously so pretty and all look SO alike. it’s always so funny how you think you don’t look like your family but you do. Ahhh I seriously love expos especially ones for marathons like Boston —- free food FTW
Allison says
I loved the expo when I did the rock and roll half marathon in providence rhode island in August! Sooo fun so many free samples and so many people that really got me so excited!!! GOOD LUCK!
Allison says
I will be actually be down there watching the race! If Isee you in the crowd I will yell! Good luck!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
That’s amazing running weather! I’m excited for the Philly marathon expo too. The only other half I ran had a pretty lame expo, this will be my first “big” one.
Becky @ Fit Chick on the Fly says
Ah I’m so excited for you guys…and jealous at the same time! Can’t wait for the post race recap 🙂 Good luck!
Claire says
WOW perfect weather for running! I recommend a tank/singlet with arm warmers. Asics makes really cheap ones ($8) in black and white…you’ll probably never take them off so if you wanted to get cuter ones, Saucony has cute ones out in bright orange, pink, and lime green 🙂
Laura says
You look just like your mother, so cute to see! It’s the first that I see her on the blog 🙂
Ana Maria says
So exciting about your upcoming race! I’m actually not sure I’ve ever commented before – love you blog and you’re just the sweetest!
Your mom is gorgeous, it’s obvious where you girls get it 🙂
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
That sounds like a blast! Run your heart out girl! 😉
Kara says
Julie- you, your mom and your sister are the best looking family trio ever! Your mom reminds me a lot of my mom, she’s 60 and still as beautiful and energetic as ever
