The laundromat was actually a really nice experience. Sure it was a pain to load all of our clothes into the car and unload them, but it was really nice to have a bunch of loads of laundry completely done within an hour.
Usually laundry day lasts from dawn until dusk in our house because we wait until we both need to use the washer and dryer and then it’s mayhem.
As I typed out that last sentence, I just had a thought. Is it weird that Ryan and I don’t combine our laundry? We have two separate laundry baskets and I do my laundry while Ryan does his.
Occasionally we’ll combine loads, but for the most part we stick to our own stuff. Not sure if that’s uncommon for married couples, but his stuff is extra stinky, so I’m fine keeping our stuff separate just in case I need to pull something out of the dirty laundry bin.
What? Don’t act like you’ve never done that…
When we arrived home from the laundromat, it was time to hang up our clothes. This was also not nearly as painful as it used to be for me because the closets in our master bedroom are flippin’ massive!
Isn’t it amazing?
Ryan has his own walk-in closet that’s the exact same size. I swear, if you combined the closets they’d be close to the size of our bedroom. I’m in love.
I spent a good three hours unpacking boxes filled with clothing, shoes, accessories, belts and purses last week, so it was nice to be able to hang up my clean clothes in an organized closet.
When I unloaded my clothes last week, I took time to hang them up according to season, style and color.
Jackets/Blazers –> Dresses –> Skirts –> Sweaters –> Tanks/t-shirts
Lunch
There were candy machines at the laundromat, so I spent a good dollar in quarters on peanut M&Ms. I’m pretty sure I could’ve spent five dollars, but this one woman gave me the evil eye when I went to get my fourth handful.
Since that lady’s judgmental looks ruined my plans to have M&Ms for lunch, Ryan and I had a more substantial lunch when we arrived home.
I had a BBQ pulled chicken sandwiche with melted cheddar cheese on a whole wheat English muffin.
A perfectly ripe nectarine served as a side… as did a pint of raspberries. A pint is one serving, right?
I’m off to organize our house a little bit. Our friend Ross is driving in town for the night from Jacksonville (and he’s bringing Kona!) and the three of us are heading to Orlando early this evening to celebrate a special birthday. Should be a fun night!

I never thought I’d ever combine my boyfriends and my laundry (I have feminist tendencies and think he can do that on his own) but ever since I drastically reduced my closet by 90% (donated a ton of clothes and now own enough clothes for all seasons to fit into one large suitcase – all classic and stylish), I do our laundry together to save on energy. It takes one full load of laundry a week to do both of our clothes combined and has saved tremendously on time. I have to admit, I kinda miss doing laundry in the laundromat – good times were always had in them! 🙂

hilarious! never heard of separate laundry for couples. we have a hamper that we share….but the rule is that sweaty workout clothes have to be hung on the laundry rack in the guest bathroom so they can dry/air out. it works pretty well because it prevents wet gross clothes from getting in with our nice stuff. but what i find weird is when whole families combine their clothes in 1 hamper. my husband’s family only has 1.5 baths in their place, and has 1 hamper that they all share (2 parents, 4 kids…now fewer kids with college etc. but still). i couldn’t do it! guess it’s what you grow up with 🙂

I miss having a big walk-in closet! But check out the most amazing (non-celebrity) closet I’ve seen so far: http://ohthemanyplaceswewillgo.blogspot.com/2011/08/welcome-to-our-new-pad.html (Like me she’s also the wife of a Foreign Service Officer who was in the same class as Karl, but while we’re posted in Manila, they were sent to Guadalajara).
I never seen a closet like that outside of TV!
Sana says
Humm, I never thought about that, since I just keep all my dirty clothes on the floor, I can just re wear them!

Ryan and I don’t combine our laundry, either… preeeetty much for that same reason (yep, i’ve totally reached in the bin to pull something, out…no biggie!). ALSO! When we moved to our current apt, there was only a washer/dryer hookup… no washer and dryer! Instead of renting a washer/dryer (about 25$/mo) we just decided to go ahead and buy one of the ones they were selling used — for a grand total of $200. Obviously, it’s paid for itself already since we’ve been living here for 19 months now… and even if it did break, we’d still have saved money over renting one! I’d totally buy a used one again in a heartbeat if I had to. It’s worked like a charm w/ no issues at all. They were the same company that rents them out, too…so they came and installed it for us, no charge. You should look into it!

LOVE the closet. Ours in our new place is similar and I’m very excited about it!!
Also? I need to get english muffins. You and Meghann keep featuring them and they’re making me so jealous!

I love quarter candy machine… we have a reese’s pieces one at work. I get at least 3 quarters worth a week!
Lindsay @ biking before bed says
The lady was probably just jealous because she didn’t have any extra quarters to spend on candy:)

My husband and I combine all of our laundry (I do all of it!) but I clean his work laundry seperate. He’s a carpenter so it’s really dusty/dirty/full of concrete etc. and I don’t need that mingling with my lululemon clothing! Plus, all of his work stuff is kinda ratty, so I can throw it in… whether it’s a white shirt, black sweater or carhartts.. 😀
Rosa - Fitness, Food, Fulfilled says
So jealous of your closets! Walk-ins are totally on my wish list for my next house.
We always combine our laundry because we save on time and number of washes that have to be run each week. It’s just more economical.

My husband and I separate ours – his clothes is all of the permenant press/high heat variaty, where as about half of my shirts I keep out of the dryer and half the clothes go on the delicate cycle…. we’ve gotten to where he won’t even move my clothes from the washing machine to the dryer!
Shaya (Eye Girl Eats) says
Have fun tonight!!
The Hubs and I combine our laundry, but I don’t put anything in the hamper that absolutely can’t be worn again. Therefore his extra stickiness doesn’t matter!!
(I re-wear some workout clothes if I didn’t sweat that much… no judgies please!)
E says
For me, a pint of raspberries is always a serving! It’s one of my 2 favorite fruits 🙂
Jenn says
My boyfriend would never have clean clothes if I didn’t do it for him 🙂 But I honestly don’t mind. I am slightly OCD and really enjoy hanging the clothes out to dry in the right order and matching socks hehe
Michelle says
I’m super jealous of that wardrobe and your clothes collection by the look of it! I had to build a second wardrobe to house mine (a walk in closet is my dream!) I could live with having no washing machine if I could take over the utility room with close where it currently sits 🙂
Janiek says
I am sooooo jealous of that closet!!!! It’s pretty obvious judging from your closets colour, you live in the sunny states, because mine would be primarily black!
mel says
my hubby and I throw our dirties directly into our washer and every two or three days I will go through and seperate them (blacks, whites, color) and wash everything. Since I do clothes several times per week it only takes minutes and is so easy!
Alison says
Your lunch looks amazing! Have you ever tried Ezekiel English Muffins? They are so hearty and delicious!
I share your love of eating mass quantities of fruit. Of course a pint = 1 serving! 😉 The only problem is it gets pretty expensive eating that much fruit in 1 sitting! lol
Emily says
How funny! My husband & I have 3 hampers: my work clothes, our combined whites/lights, & our combined colored clothes/denim. He does the second 2 hampers on a regular basis & I always wash my work clothes since I’m picky about it. Sometimes I’d rather sit at home & do all the laundry than go to work all day though! so much for feminism haha 🙂
cheryl says
that’s funny…i never combined with the X and don’t with the current BF (live-in). and i was actually debating that this AM and feeling like it was somehow wrong. thanks for making me less alone! although, i’ll confess, i SWEAT both in workouts and my sleep so mine may be worse….
Jodi says
I am TOTALLY guilty of having to reach in the hamper for something….pre-worn!
In my house, it’s pretty much that I am the only one that does any laundry. Hands down one of my least favorite chores!
Krysta says
Girl, I feel like we are living parallel lives right now. We have a washer at our new house but no dryer so we’ve been hittin up the laundromat as well. I’m used to it after living in NYC for the past 4 years where I always had to use the laundromat, but I think it’s a bit of an adjustment for Brian (the first time he did the laundry on his own he didn’t realize you can keep adding quarters to the dryer to run it for a whole hour). Also, we do combine our laundry but I hear you on the sweaty boy clothes… I once wanted something out of the hamper but could not wear it after it had been mingling with his work out clothes.
AnneW says
I just did my laundry at a laundromat for the first time today– in Bruges, Belgium! During the wait I ate 2 lbs of strawberries, something about laundry brings out the berry-eating in both of us!
Amber K says
My husband and I combine clothes. In fact, if something is truly dirty it is automatically thrown into the washer which gets run once it’s full. I have never sorted type of clothes or colors versus whites and have never had a problem. So technically we don’t have a “laundry day” because laundry day is just whenever the washer is full and ready to go.
If there is even the possibility that I could wear something again, it doesn’t go into the washer. I keep it on top of my dresser or simply put it back if it truly isn’t dirty yet.
Brooke says
I definitely do NOT miss doing laundry at the laundromat, but this post reminded me of when my husband Ryan and I lived in and apt in Lauderdale by the Sea. We’d put a few loads of laundry in, walk 1 minute to the beach, swim, return to dry our stuff, and repeat. I miss living on the beach in FL, but I love having a washer/dryer in our Cape Cod home 🙂 And yes, we combine our clothes! My work scrubs are as gross as his workout clothes!
dana says
My Husband and I do our laundry separate too! I like it that way. I’m picky about laundry…some things are delicate, some things I don’t dry, etc. He has specific days that he does laundry, but I just wait for as long as I possibly can 🙂
Meg says
My fiance and I do our laundry separate, too. He works in a kitchen and works with crazy spices and stuff all day, so I keep my clothes as far from his as possible in the event that a) the spices don’t go away after washing and b) if I need to pull something out of the dirty laundry, it won’t smell like cumin or something. Glad to hear we’re not the only ones!
alex says
my husband and I don’t really combine laundry either. but I don’t trust anyone to do my laundry! 🙂
Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats says
Going to the laundromat is so convinient since it only takes an hour! I love that aspect of it! 🙂 My man and I always did our laundry separately too unless we needed to make enough for a load. Otherwise he lets his pile up until he has an empty closet. He has about five times the amount of clothing that I do. lol.
Laura says
We always do our laundry together except for his army stuff…those are extra ripe so they get their own load lol
Katherina @ Zephyr Runs says
Lately since I’ve been the one working out and he hasn’t it’s been MY clothes that have been extra stinky and not his! We pretty much do our laundry together, though. I love laundromats just for the quality time you get having to wait for your clothes to finish!
Tanya @ Vegan Faith says
That is very strange to me since my husband and I do all of our laundry together, but I’ve heard of many other couples doing the same thing.
