Apparently I got so wrapped up in this morning’s American Girl talk that I forgot to post about my workout.
Or maybe I intentionally blocked it out of my mind since it wasn’t exactly a pleasurable experience?
Today’s workout included a five mile run with Sadie. It was one of those “stop, start” runs thanks to Sadie’s itty bitty bladder, but this time I didn’t mind the breaks.
My legs felt incredibly heavy on my run… lead legs! (I blame yesterday’s intense leg workout.) I kept waiting to get into a running groove, but it never happened, so I just trucked along until I was back home.
I know I’ve said it before, but the weekday runs are definitely my least favorite part of half marathon training. I find them to be so redundant after a while, but they’re a necessary evil for me to feel my best on race day and prevent injury.
I’m already looking forward to my workouts once the half marathon is over! I can’t wait to incorporate more circuit and treadmill workouts back into my routine.
In the meantime I’m in the process of making a new running playlist for Saturday’s long run, so if you have any awesome song recommendations, feel free to share because I’m in the market for some good tunes. I’ll be sure to post my playlist once it’s complied.
Lunch
There’s something so yummy about classic tuna salad… but I think salmon salad may give it a run for its money!
I used a pouch of wild caught salmon to make a delicious salmon salad that I served on a whole wheat hot dog bun with an assortment of sides including carrots, pickles, string cheese and Greek yogurt.
I poured the remaining salmon juice from the packet over Sadie’s food which promptly made me her favorite doggie parent for the day.
Booya, Ryan!
Back to work! I have two freelance projects that are screaming my name.
Mary @ food and fun on the run says
I just found an awesome website last week for Running Playlists! I strongly urge you to check it out for up beat running music 🙂 I just wrote about it Friday!

Have you ever tried an epsom salt bath after a hard leg workout? I tell all my clients to try it after a hard or intense workout, and at least 80% say it works. The other 20% probably don’t have time to take a bath, but what can you do? Feel better and have a great day.
peanutbutterfingers says
oh cool! i’ve never heard of that!
Dawn @ Blonde on a Mission says
I just posted about this… my 2 new favourite upbeat songs are Footloose – Blake Shelton and Don’t Hold Your Breath – Nicole Scherzinger. I also really like Domino by Jessie J.
Brittany @ Healthy Slice says
I always go tuna… I need to live in the wild side and grab salmon one day 🙂
AmandaCG says
Yeah for new playlists! I just put some new music on my IPOD and have and epic run this am. Thanks to Ricky Martin’s “Cup of Life” I ran at my top speed so far for the entire song!
Mallory @ It's Only Life says
i need to incorporate those little pouches into my lunches more. at first i was kind of grossed out by the idea of them, but once i tried them i was amazed by how delicious and easy they are! i think i like them better than tuna because it’s less messy/smelly!
Tia says
Darn! I was going to suggest that one, Awesome song!
Lee @ in the pink of condition says
Dev – Dancing in the Dark! It’s my new workout playlist song 🙂
kaitlin @4loveofcarrots says
Rihanna we found love, dark fantasy kanye west. I was informed the new David Guetta cd was really good but I have yet to check it out
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Pretty sure ice baths help—but they are horribly cold!! For songs : “Sexy and I Know It”-LMFAO, “Love You Like A Love Song”-Selena Gomes (I know, I am like 12! haha), and anything Britney, Lady Gaga, or Pitbull!
Your lunch looks SO satisfying and delicious!
Ashley @ Good Taste Healthy Me says
I so wish I liked salmon but I just can’t get down. I don’t even like to smell it!
Good luck on your projects!
Kristi says
I usually rely on my Pandora Britney, Katy & Gaga station, but my workout playlist favories are: The Faint “Paranoia Attack”, Paul Simon “Late in the Evening,” and Daft Punk “Harder Better Faster Stronger.” Oh, and Justin Timberlake’s “Damn Girl” because I like to think he’s singing to me! 🙂
Anne @strawberryjampackedlife.com says
Glad to hear that Sadie has issues with running straight (no stopping), too. I was getting so annoyed with April this morning trying to complete my Couch-to-5k workout while she wanted to sniff and mark every 10 feet.
I’m digging “Got My Mind Set On You” and “Hard to Handle” right now. Old school! “GMMSOY” makes me want to put on leg warmers and join a jazzercise class!
Katie says
Okay – I have 2 AWESOME running songs for you on your long run. Imma Shine by Youngbloodz and Let’s Go by Trick Daddy.
Always looking for a good running song! I love this post, hope to get some good ideas! =)
peanutbutterfingers says
trick daddy!!!! <3
Heidi O'Brien says
Try ‘She is Beautiful’ by Andrew W.K
It is a great hill song!
Sylvia @ Frolic Through Life says
I’m feeling some soreness in my legs after yesterday’s workout too. I hope it doesn’t stop me from tomorrow’s planned run.
I’ve been listening to Adele on my runs lately and her songs seem to keep me calm and relaxed as I truck on.
Casey @ Pocket Full of Sunshine says
Try “We Found Love” by Rihanna (obsessed!!) and “I Like How it Feels” by Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull. “Liv Tonight” by Nelly and Keri Hilson is great too, and so is “Suddenly” by tobyMac. Those are my running faves right now!
Brittany says
I hate running with lead legs. I totally love rainy nights too they make me want to relax and sleep haha.
Got to love you- sean paul ft. alexis jordan
We found love- rhianna

Hillary says
My new favorite running song is “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse (the Mark Ronson) version. Oh, and “Love on Top” by Beyonce. Cannot get enough of them, and I swear they make me faster!
Carol @ Lucky Zucca says
Have you heard the version of Valerie by the Glee cast?! So awesome! I run to it all the time!
Hillary says
Heck yea! I love pretty much every thing the Glee cast produces.
Carol @ Lucky Zucca says
Haha meee too! I could basically make a Glee running playlist. Actually, thats not a bad idea… I might go do that now!
Jamie says
I know you’re a Newlyweds fan- does “Chicken of the Sea” bring back memories from season 1? 🙂

Madeon, Pop Culture.
This 17 year old took 39 different songs and remixed them all together. From what I can tell this mashup isn’t your typical style of workout music, but it is totally worth a listen. Also the video I linked is not the original creators song, but this guy who dances to the whole thing. I don’t think it is possible not to smile while watching this. This video and song makes me happy every time, and for sure motivates me to get moving. I find it great for running.
Kari Burghardt says
Here is one: Rollerblades by Eliza Doolittle. It’s a happy lighthearted song that makes me feel good for some reason. I had it on my playllist during my 5k a few weekends ago. It’s catchy! Give it a shot! 🙂
~Kari
Khushboo says
My right calf feels like lead right now- i ‘forgot’ to stretch after my run yesterday and I want to kick myself for taking stretchin for granted- so painful!
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
I’ll have to give that salmon-in-a-pouch a try!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
I hate when I have “lead legs”. I know exactly how that feels, and plain and simple – it sucks. It makes your run feel so much longer and labor intensive. Way to stick with it and push through!
Liz @ Something To Chew On says
I can’t stop listening to Domino by Jessie J. It makes me feel like I’m about 12 years old (minus the risqué lyrics), but has a great beat!
Julie says
Otis by Kanye West and Jay Z! LOVE LOVE! My new fave and U and Dat by E40. They are my 2 songs I start running with. Only problem is they make me want to dance : )
peanutbutterfingers says
tryin’ to get to yooooooou and that booty! 🙂
Jordan K. says
Not sure if you like their type of music or not, but I recently purchased LMFAO’s new album and have been listening to it for my treadmill runs lately. It’s definitely an album that gets me goin’ and wants to “Party Rock!” 😉
Rosa - Fitness, Food, Fulfilled says
I always try to not have a leg workout precede a run day because I don’t ever feel like the run is the best it could be. It’s just hard to get the timing right sometimes.
I love salmon salad sandwiches more than I think I do tuna, unless its albacore. Then tuna is on!
Liza says
Hey Julie!! Here are some of my fav workout songs right meow:
Moves Like Jagger-Maroon 5

Magic-BoB ft Rivers Cuomo

Hope you are doing well girlie, I read ya every day!

i still love dynamite, too! 🙂
LeeAnn says
Have you thought about mixing up your week day runs to make them more exciting? Hitting a track or doing intervals or progression runs?
I just finished training for a full and i would have died if it was just…go out and run. It was neat to have speed or something else to play with.
Just a thought 🙂 Plus, Jasper loved the change of pace workouts!
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
Sadie is so adorable! She always seems so happy! Is her tounge ever in her mouth? ;p
Rachel says
I’m a HUGE fan of Biebs on my shorter runs (10K and less). “Somebody to Love” is my favourite run song ever, and “One Time.” Also, right now I’m running to “Mr. Saxobeat” by Alexandra Stan, “Stronger” by Kanye West, and “(I’ve Just Begun) Having My Fun” by Britney… Yup. Lots of pop!
Ciera @ Rose and Thistle says
‘Lights’ Bassnectar remix by Ellie Goulding
‘Shake it Out’ by Florence + the Machine

And it’s a bit slower but I’m loving running to ‘Iridescent’ by Linkin Park right now too.

I know what you mean…oddly enough I enjoy my long weekend runs so much more than my shorter ones during the week!
Judith says
RuPaul’s song Champion is the BEST…I know it’s random, but it’s so fun and amazing. That whole album is great, but definitely give this song a listen 🙂
Sian says
I know it may sound odd but surely Disney songs must be on the playlist?! I especially like ones from Pocahontas (Colours of the Wind, Just Around the River Bend, Steady as the Beating Drum) and The Lion King (Circle of Life, Hakuna Matata, Just Cant Wait to be King)…. ahhh you’re never too old for Disney <3
Gen says
That’s why I prefer running in the morning, cause my legs are lighter. And after a long run, if I feel my legs heavy, I tretch, and I pour some cold water over them, from feet to knees to activate circulation. And you feel better.
Allie says
Defintely Dynamite by Tiao Cruz. Also break your heart by Tiao Cruz and I would also reccomend only girl in the world by rihanna and we found love by Rihanna. My new fav is without you by usher and david guetta. I practically want to dance while I’m running! Isn’t it amazing what music can do to you while you run?
Allie says
Also I love Mr. Saxobeat by Alexandra Stan! It’s so awesome!
peanutbutterfingers says
LOVE that song!
Joelle (On a Pink Typewriter) says
I just downloaded a bunch actually.. I hate to admit it, but anything by Miley usually works great for a run or intense workout, as well as Foster the People “Miss You,” Coconut Records “West Coast,” dragonette “Hello,” and anything by Phoenix. 🙂
Hope says
I’ve never had salmon salad before. It sounds interesting.
I’m in love with Rihanna’s new song, “We Found Love.” You should definitely add that to your playlist 🙂
KaraHadley says
Try B.O.B’s songs “Game Time” and “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now.” I pretty much hate running, but every now and then I decide to do some treadmill intervals. Those two songs always get me through.
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
oh gosh, every morning run with our dogs is; stop, start, pee, sniff, sprint, drag, poop, run… you get the picture!!
