Late this afternoon I received a wonderful email from Ryan. He had a special work lunch at The Capital Grille with coworkers this afternoon and bought an extra serving of their lobster macaroni and cheese for us to enjoy this evening!
Ryan is really good about bringing me treats home from work. He almost always brings me a slice of leftover birthday cake or a cupcake from a coworker’s retirement party, but lobster mac and cheese is a first!
For someone who will not be eating dessert throughout Lent, receiving an email telling me that lobster mac and cheese would be waiting for me at home when I got off work was just the thing I needed to make me forget all about dessert!
The lobster macaroni and cheese from The Capital Grille is unreal. It’s incredibly rich, creamy and flavorful and packed with big bites of lobster meat. In a word, it’s perfection.
I first tried the lobster mac and cheese on our very first (and only) trip to The Capital Grille on Valentine’s Day last year. Ryan and I both agreed that the lobster mac and cheese was the highlight of our meal and we’ve raved about it ever since.
Since Ryan actually enjoyed his own portion of the lobster mac at lunch, he let me go to town on the to-go box this evening.
It was just as good as I remembered and I ate the whole stinkin’ portion… Well, probably more like 75 percent because I shared with Sadie since I’m a sucker.
Though I’m not a calorie counter, to put the richness of this dish into perspective for you guys, it has 1,560 calories. Trust me when I say that it is worth every single one. It’s definitely a “rare occasion” dish, and I loved every last bite.
Unfortunately about halfway through the Ash Wednesday service at our church this evening, I started to feel a bit ill. I think the richness of this dish really caught up to me. Phew! Even Ryan said he wasn’t feeling so hot this evening and he attributes his sicky feeling to his overly rich lunch.
I think it’s interesting that we can both put down sweets like it’s nobody’s business, but rich dishes like this really get to us! I wonder why that is? Any of you health smarties out there have an idea?
Now I’m off to not eat dessert and hopefully hop into bed early! I’m so ready for the weekend already…
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
That does look amazing! It might not sit as well as treats/desserts do because the fat sits in the stomach longer than carbs or protein does. So if it is a dish higher in fat than you’d normally eat (which it looks like it is), then it would sit longer in the stomach and may cause that pain as your body decides/figures out what to do with it. Also, this could be a good sign that your body doesn’t recognize such a heavy dish!! 🙂
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
i bet the fat content has a LOT to do with it. we can eat fro yo and ice cream (usually light) like champs, but they’re not as high-fat as this mac & cheese, i’m sure.
Amy says
Oh heavenly yum. What a great husband you have! <3
Maissa says
I had truffle macaroni and cheese two years ago, and the thought of it still makes me drool. Lobster mac and cheese sounds like it would be just as good.
Allison@ Happy Tales says
Aw, that is so sweet of Ryan to not only bring home you something special, but *think* to BUY you something special while out on a WORK lunch… that’s quite impressive! Major points for that fella. Hope your tummy starts to feel back to normal soon…
vanessa says
Well its not just you, I don’t know anyone who can eat something that rich and not feel “blech” later.
However I’ve always wondered how you can stomach so much sweetness because that’s exactly how I get with too much sugar. If I ate that much Id be sick so maybe it is just different bodies.
LKO says
This looks delicious, I want to try this next time I go to Capital Grille.
Brittney says
I have had that dish. It is moan-out-loud delicious.
Kiran says
I don’t have an answer to said question, but I am sure the high fat content is the culprit 😉 I want to give this a try though. Looks delish 😀

My boyfriend and I went to Capital Grille for Valentine’s Day this year and the Lobster Mac and Cheese is to die for. After reading your tweet, I debated whether or not to go to Capital Grille after work just to get the Lobster Mac and Cheese. I opted not to get it…but guess where I’m headed this weekend 🙂
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
Dishes like that sit in my tummy weird too. They seem like a great idea at the time and then later you’re cursing the skies! 🙂
Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete says
That mac and cheese looks so delicious! But yes, my stomach can’t handle super rich dishes like that. and with the cheese on there? my insides wouldn’t stand a chance!
Alexa @ SimpleEats says
I LOVE mac and cheese! It’s one of my favorite foods! I definitely know what you mean, my stomach felt icky the other day after a cheesy burrito. But cheesy, rich dishes are soo good once in awhile!
Sable @ Squat Like a Lady says
As another commenter said, fats take significantly longer than proteins or carbohydrates to be digested and stored or utilized, so fatty foods “sit heavy” and can cause uncomfortable sensations if your body isn’t used to dealing with them! I have this issue too.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE lobster mac & cheese. There’s something about that combo!
Clare @ Fitting It All In says
Looks delicious! But I’m the same way – anything overly creamy or buttery and my stomach is a mess. I had a couple of bites of an alfredo pasta this past weekend and got the worst cramps!
Chris says
Hi there – my girlfriend reads your blog and I thought I might be able to answer your question. Your stomach probably felt yucky because the way we absorb food in our small intestine is different for sugars and carbs than it is for fats/rich food. When sugar reaches the small intestine it’s easily absorbed because glucose is an easy and quick nutrient that all of our cells like to use, but fat on the other hand is not water soluble so it needs a little help and through a some nifty nerve reflexes it uses bile to help separate it and then be broken down. We also have to slow the motility of our guts for fat so this can cause some icky feelings too when it needs a little extra time and/or water to work. Hope this helps!
Ali @ Ali Runs says
What a great hubby to bring you food home!! I love mac and cheese and anything with lobster is delicious! I had the same problem (with the upset stomach) when I took a trip to Cape Cod over the summer and had a lot of rich sea food. I’m not sure what it was, but it definitely affected me.
Morgan @ Happy, Healthy & Me says
Oh my gosh that looks delicious! Is a recipe recreations coming soon?!
Heather (Heather's dish) says
Oh my goodness, lobster mac dominates all other macs! Way to go Ryan 🙂
Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles says
I love Capital Grille! We went there for my birthday last year. The parmesan truffle fries are crazy ridiculous. So rich and decadent!
peanutbutterfingers says
I want to try those!!
Sarah K. @ The Pajama Chef says
that looks great! but so rich. my husband sometimes goes on work lunches to my favorite mexican place and i love it when he brings home a chicken quesadilla for me. 🙂 so sweet!
Katie @ running4cupcakes says
Lobster mac and cheese from the capital grille is for sure on my “to do” list now!
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
Both my mom and I have that problem- we can do rich desserts, but rich food puts us over the edge to the point where we actually faint. Really really weird, right? The last time it happened I was on a subway platform and had to sit down because I was so worried I’d pass out onto the tracks!
carlee says
WOW! That is some crazy calories! At least you enjoyed it! I would rather use it on some fat booty milkshake!
Is it your serving size on your plate that had that much?
Just wondering…will you cut back a little on food tomorrow because of the high-calorie dinner? I’ve always wondered how you/ people compensate. I really don’t know what normal eating should be sometimes bc of struggling with various ED’s.
Christina says
I think it’s okay to indulge every now and then, right? and me too about the sweets! I always go into autopilot when it comes to munching down sweets.
Hannah says
I am the same way — I could eat all the sugar & dessert in the world, but I only ever notice feeling crappy after something really high in fat.
I also have the same question as above — how do you balance out a 1500 calorie dish? I know you exercise regularly and lead a healthy lifestyle — but for example, tomorrow will you be thinking about how you ate today and need to compensate for it at all? (Not saying that you should! At all! Just saying that I have some warped ideas about food & calorie counting like the person above me mentioned too. I want so badly to be ‘normal’!)
peanutbutterfingers says
To me, it really is all about balance. I know I don’t eat dishes that are that indulgent all the time, so I really try not to worry about it and just hop back into healthy eating the next day. One really indulgent meal doesn’t “un-do” all of my healthy eating efforts. I hope this makes sense!
Jazmine @ Gracefully Glutenless says
My mom works at The Capital Grille here in LA! Unfortunately I can’t have the lobster mac, but we’ve made it healthier at home with glutenfree pasta.
glad you like it!
Mac says
Ugh, that sounds heavenly!
Brittany in TX says
Yum…I have always wanted to try Lobster Mac n Cheese but haven’t yet…now I must!
Jaclyn says
I think the first comment is right on: fat and heavier foods sit in your stomach longer and take longer to digest than sugars.. that lobster mac looks pretty yum though! what a guy to bring you treats all the time! 😀
Have a good night – more power to ya for not eatin sweets!!
Melissa says
Have you ever thought about making your own version of the Lobster Mac and Cheese? I have often made a lighter version of Crab (Blue Lump Crab that is!) Mac and Cheese – it is absolutely delicious!
The Capital Grille is amazing and I never pass up on this dish – it’s ok to indulge! And with no desserts I’d fully enjoy it! 🙂
Carrie says
ooo sorry it didnt settle with you! id say its becuz your bodies are so used to not eating food like that- so it was a little shock to the system!
katie says
I love Capital Grille! They have AMAZING Parmesan Truffle Fries too!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yummy!
Gen says
Wow that sounds deelish! I’m the same way though….ultra-rich dishes always get to me!
Jamily says
I definitely think it’s the fat content you guys aren’t used to. Sounds awesome, though!
Stacey says
I think alot of people might have something with the fat content being the culprit. I get the same feeling when i eat dairy heavy dishes. Not yogurt or a little bit of cheese or ice cream, but really cheesy, cream heavy stuff! I love new england clam chowder and one of my favorites is at the Outback, but it is very think with lots of cream and it gets me everytime. I have not had it in a long time bc I decided its not worth the pain! Love your blog! and good luck with being dessert free for 40 days!
Hope says
Wow, that looks amazing! I’ve been to the Capital Grille one time and I didn’t even realize that they had that there. It looks really rich and creamy. I think that would kill my stomach. 🙁
Jessica says
I’m the same way – rich foods don’t work well for me but I can throw back some ice cream like nobody’s business! Kudos to you for giving up dessert, rock on wit ya bad self!
Clarissa @ soberandthecity says
I had that last year at a work dinner in NYC, SOOOO GOOD!! But yes, the calorie count is unreal.
Amy B says
Every time I see your bfast sandwiches with nectarines, I get so jealous of how JUICY they look! I wish we could get fruit like that up here, but we only ever get good nectarines in the summer months. I guess those are the benefits of living in FL 🙂
Jason @ Shutter&Saute says
Just came across this recipe for Lobster Mac… http://www.healthyfoodforliving.com/?p=18732
Looks really tasty!
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
ahhhh, I have a restaurant near me that serves the BEST lobster mac and cheese. honestly, it’s to die for.
I want to tackle this in the kitchen next! 🙂
Chicago Cuisine Critique says
This mac & cheese is definitely one of my favorites. i’m sure it was the heavy amounts of cheese, cream, and butter that had you feeling not so good. That happens to me too! But, it is sooo worth it sometimes. 😉
Caitie @ The Caitie Experiment says
I don’t even LIKE lobster and I think that looks amazing! We went to Capital Grille last summer during Restaurant Week and both got the Kona-encrusted sirloin — UNBELIEVABLE. Although now that you posted about the mac n cheese, I am considering switching our reservation (it’s RW here again) from another steakhouse to CG, just so I have an excuse to go there and get it!
karen says
ohh that looks soo good!
i’ve gotten that too – feeling super nauseous after a really fatty meal. i asked my friend with a science degree and sports background, and she said (in my case), it was most likely from eating the fatty meal too soon after a workout without refueling on enough protein when my muscles were recovering from the workout. don’t know if that could relate to your case. i’ve gotten that feeling in the evening sometimes too from fatty foods even though my workout was in the morning.
i don’t think it means you have to give up the rich foods – just make sure you’re getting enough protein following your workout? that’s what i’ve been trying, and now i’m fine with eating whatever.
Bridget says
Yes! I’ve had the Capital Grille Mac n Cheese and it is probably one of the most incredible things ever…but definintely a special occasion food!!
