A little more than two months ago, I visited the lululemon store in Winter Park, Florida at the invitation of Amanda and Melissa, two incredibly kind lululemon employees.
While at the store, I picked out two pieces of lululemon apparel to try and review. A couple of you have requested my reviews a few times now, so I figured I better get on it!
While at the lululemon store, I was immediately drawn to the lululemon scoop neck tank in a beautiful teal color.
When I tried it on, I fell in love with the feminine look of the tank and the flattering cut.
I felt like it looked almost like a halter top from the front, when really it’s a racer back tank.
(Sorry for the pink sports bra straps. I have an ongoing fear of workout tanks being too thin and showing nipples. I always wear a sports bra under any workout tank, even if it has a built-in sports bra.)
The fabric of the tank is thicker than most other workout tanks I own which I loved for most workouts, with the exception of running. For running I like barebones workout clothes that feel more light and airy.
The length of the top is longer than every other workout top I own, which I absolutely loved. I hate running and feeling like a workout top keeps riding up. I never end up wearing those tanks unless all of my other preferred workout clothes are in the laundry.
During the past two months that I have owned this tank, I’ve worn it on long runs, during exercise classes (BodyPump, I miss you!) and strength training workouts. I’ve also worn it to bum around the house and on leisure walks around the neighborhood.
Overall, here are my pros and cons:
Pros:
- Length (!!!)
- Breathable fabric
- Form fitting without being too clingy
- Feminine style
- Vibrant and neutral colors available
Cons:
- Expensive
- Fabric is a little to thick for hot runs in the Florida heat

Do lululemon ( I always thought it was loo -loo-MON haha) tanks fit true to size?
peanutbutterfingers says
well, i only own this tank and a pair of workout capris from lululemon, but both were my typical size and fit as i would expect them to! maybe others who own more lululemon clothing can weigh in?
Macrae says
I thought it was loo-loo-MON too!! Just a few days ago I heard someone talking about it and I was sure they were saying loo-loo-WOMEN. After looking closely at the word I realized the mistake I had been making! I don’t think I’ll be able to think of it any other way though 🙂
Aine @ Something to Chew Over says
I’ve always wanted to try Lululemon! I’ve heard such good things about the whole range but I’ve never seen it in stores here in Ireland.
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
I’ve seen tons of bloggers with that same top and I love the look of it but I have yet to drop $$$ on anything lululemon. I too always wear a bra under workout tanks!
Shannon says
I love that color on you!
I love the top, too! I wish there was a lululemon where I live!
Vicky says
I have seen there clothes and think they are cute. But I have hard time spending a lot of money on work out clothes. Target works just fine.
I also feel the same way about “built in” sports bra. I always wear sports bras underneath and mine have a little padding in them! I think when you see the nips its very unflattering (did I make that up that word?).
peanutbutterfingers says
and WHY when i am hotter than heck in the gym do i get nipply? WHY!?
Ashley says
It’s the ac that gets me! I used to run to my gym and then do weights there, but I’d get so sweaty on the way and then I’d be freezing in the gym and highly self-conscious about my nipples. So I started going to the bathroom and putting little folded up pieces of paper towel in there to hide the protrusions, and it worked!
Catherine 'T' says
I’m that way too Julie! I’m quite ‘perky’ after a run/workout…. 🙁
The only time the cold affects me that way is if cold air literally caresses bare skin….which of course doesn’t happen often!
katie says
Love the scoop neck tank! I have to say this one and the Power Y Tank are my favorites! I like the color you chose too!
Daniella @ Runner at Heart says
I love Lululemon gear! Even though it is expensive it is totally worth the money because it lasts and the quality is awesome.
Jordan @ food, sweat, and beers says
Wow, this tank is gorge. The color is very eye-catching and the length might be my favorite aspect. There’s nothing more annoying than getting swoll during a BodyPump class (or jumping around like a lunatic in Body Attack) and your shirt sneaking up…
cheryl says
i get show-thru even WITH sports bras. the nonus to being in the itty-bitty club SHOULD be being able to skip a bra sometimes but i can’t do that nor can i rely on shelf bras (in regular stuff too)….though i also appreciate shaping (now i’m totally off sports bras and on regular ones).
random rant — not every A cup wants to look like a D. i need more than flimsy lining but dont feel the need for a push-up stuffed w/ lies. biofit by VS is a good balance…it does enhance but not so much that people will say “hey, where di THOSE come from??”
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I always wear sports bras under tanks with the built in thing too. Not as much b/c of the nipply thing but it’s never supportive enough! And then b/c of that, I feel like I can barely breathe b/c there is just way too much tight fabric going on up top!
Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups says
I love the Winter Park lululemon and I can’t wait for their shop to open at the Mall at Millenia! I always wear sports bras under built in tanks too.
susan says
Lululemon has these padded things that go into slits in the shelf of most of their shirts. i have them but i have yet to use them. i probably should b/c i get self conscious as well and i can’t wear a sports bra underneath cause then i can’t breathe!
Pam says
I have the nipple fear too! LOL
Bee Goes Bananas says
It looks like a nice shirt!!
Cait's Plate says
Oooh I’m actually glad you did this post because I’ve been admiring it the past couple of days! That’s the one downside to Lululemon, the prices!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Looks great on you Julie! I’m a lover of all things Lulu, and I can attest to the fact that the cups that they have to insert into most tanks (sometimes you have to ask for them, but they’re free) TOTALLY eliminate the need for a sports bra underneath! Well, actually I should warn that I’m not overly well-endowed, but I’d say they work really well if you’re average-sized or smaller. Teal is a great colour on you!
chelsea says
I’m the same way! Even if something has a built in bra I have to wear something under. The fear of nips showing ack!
I love the fact that you deeply reviewed this tank though. Like you wore it a bunch of different ways (during different workouts), and let us know cons and pros. Unlike some people they won’t go into much detail..I just wish I could afford Lululemon 🙁
Sana says
I HAVE to wear a bran under anything, I can’t believe that some people have an option, lol!
Lindsey @ SoundEats says
I think a couple other people may have already weighed in, but I used to work for lululemon and wanted to let you know that next time you go to a store, just ask them for a pair of cups in your size — they’re free, and they’re padded inserts that provide completely appropriate, ahem, “climate control”.
I never thought I needed those padded cups, until one day in January I was leaving an evening bikram yoga class and headed out to a windy, 40-degree evening…umm yes. Ever since I’ve used the padded cups. 😉
Samantha says
Hi Julie,
I can totally relate to the Lululemon problem with the built in bras and wanting to wear your own.
If you ask them they will provide you with FREE padding cups that are removable and work wonders! I use them all the time and have even gone back for more! Some shirts come with the shirts, others don’t, so just ask and they’ll give you the size and quantity you need no questions asked!
Hope that helps you out! Plus it will be less hot when wearing your shirt to not have to wear an extra layer 🙂
Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola says
You look so cute in this tank! I have seen a lot of women at my yoga studio who have this so now I might have to give it a try! I actually don’t own anything Lulu, but want to give it a try! I just wish it weren’t so expensive!
Nicole @ PancakesandPilates says
I have this tank in 3 colors and I love it for the feminine fit and forgiving shape around the tummy. The teal color is beautiful on you Julie. I can’t wait to hear about the other piece of gear 🙂
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
I am always SO worried about the little “nip problem” (I’ll be honest… mine always show. especially during workouts. I will never, ever go bra-less), but my black lululemon scoop tank actually hides them well!
it’s the first tank I’ve ever had that I’ll wear sans sports bra.
you’re welcome for that overshare of personal boobage information.
Erin says
Another Lululemon con (SAD, because I think their stuff is sooooo cute): the fabric isn’t that durable! I wore a cross shoulder bag with one of my tops and it is all pilly and “rubbed” where the strap was now 🙁
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
i LOVE lululemon. i have never had an issue with the quality AND… this is a little known fact, but if something wears down or nubs or something like that, lulu will replace it no questions asked. it’s amazing customer service.
Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats says
I love Lululemon so much! 🙂 Totally addicted.
Alaina says
I know people who live by lululemon but it’s so expensive. For the quality, do you think its worth the money??
@HilaryFleming says
Totally. Just buy a classic solid color so it doesn’t look too trendy and you can wear them for 5 years. literally. I think I bought my first pair of groove pants back in 2007 when there were just like 3 stores in LA area and I still wear them. This is after wearing them 3 days a week when I was teaching dance. The price is a little staggering but I think I spend $100 on the pants and 5 years later they look good. Can’t say that about my $25 yoga pants from Old Navy (plus it seems like other brands always turn into high water pants after washing. These do not).
Lauren says
I have the same fear of the thin workout tops/nipples. I layer until I feel there’s no way those babies are showin’. That top is SUPER cute. I like the cut, too. We got one at a huge mall near my hometown, so over break I have a feeling i’ll be dropping a nice chunk of cash at the store. Yikes!
Yolie @ Practising Wellness says
I love lululemon, and this top looks gorgeous – the colour is lovely! And so is the halter cut – I much prefer thick straps on workout gear. And yup, I totally agree – I aklways wear sports bras underneath workout tops – I just don’t feel I get enough support from built in bras alone, plus I feel a little bit “nekkid” without, lol! 😉 xyx
Amy says
If you ask at lululemon you can get bra cup inserts. They’re pads you slip inside the built-in bra liner and camoflauge any nipplage. They’re great!
@HilaryFleming says
This is hilarious. I am actually sitting here in the EXACT same top (color and all) as I type this. lol good taste lady. I love Lululemon stuff. Kind of a bummer that it’s so $$$ but it does last forever and I just try to buy pieces that are classic so I can wear them for a few years. I totally agree that w the Florida humidity it might be a little brutal. But it’s perfect for the A/C gym or yoga, etc. Super supportive too.
I think the sizes, if anything run a little small. I typically wear a size 4-6 but I always buy a 6-8 at Lulu.
Heather says
Love love love this tank on you, Julie! The color is beautiful. Lucky you getting some lululemon swag, too!
Molly says
I love lulu! However…Nordstrom has a brand Zella that is very similar to lulu, apparently an ex designer from lulu is doing contracting work with the Zella line exclusively at Nordstrom. I like their pants better than my lulus and they are less expensive, and even better on sale 🙂
Mae says
I love that top – maybe I’ll add it to my Christmas list. My mom gave me these nipple cover inserts, and I wear them every day at the gym and also with some swimsuits: http://dimrs.com
They don’t add any volume, but nothing ever shows through, and they’re durable and easy to rinse off.
Lea @ Healthy Coconut says
Lululemon will give you the sports bra pad to make them thicker. I have actually put 2 of the padding once because I always run cold.
Lisa says
I’m a dancer so I can relate to the whole “not wanting anything to show through” thing as well. Where did you find your sports bra? I’ve been on a hunt for a good one, but can’t seem to find any that works.
Tracey says
I love this tank! I agree with you though, I always wear a sports bra with my workout tanks due to the possibility of nipple showage. Love Lulu, just wish they were a little less expensive. I just heard that there is a Lulu outlet in Florida somewhere. Maybe Orlando area? Do you know about this?
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
yes! there is an outlet in orlando!
Suzi @ Confessions of a Fitness Instructor says
If you keep an eye on their website they tend to add stuff to the “we made too much” section weekly and you can get good deals there (pretty much for the same price they sell stuff for at the outlet in Orlando). That’s how I’ve built up my collection! It’s still pricey, but AS pricey.
Ali @ Ali Runs says
I have the Lulu Scoop Neck Tank and actually just wore in during my half marathon last weekend. I LOVE mine! I seriously want to buy one of each in every color. Too bad it’s mucho $$$!
Elizabeth says
I love, love that tank top!! You’re so cute, Julie!!) I would kill to look like you!!
