This post title could mean many things.
- I did so many reps at the gym that I maxed out my muscles.
- I bought too many Christmas gifts and maxed out my credit card.
False and false (thankfully!).
Today I realized that one hour is the maximum amount of time I like to spend at the gym. It seems like right when I realize I’ve been there for an hour, my brain shuts down and says, “Time to go!”
I can almost always get in and out of the gym in 60 minutes or less, but sometimes Ryan takes a little longer when he does a 20 minute cardio warm up before his strength training workout with me.
After 20 minutes of cardio and a solid upper body workout, I had been at the gym for 55 minutes and was done. I looked at Ryan and he said he needed a little bit longer, so rather than stand around in the lobby reading magazines like I usually do when I wait for him, I decided to get in some stretching. Much more productive!
How long do you usually workout for at the gym before you mentally check out of a workout?
Breakfast
Today’s morning meal included an egg sandwich made with a toasted whole wheat English muffin, two fried eggs, muenster cheese and raspberry jelly.
My taste buds never tire of this combination.

If I’m taking a class like zumba, I can last a little over an hour, but if I’m doing cardio and weights, 45 min to 60 is my max. I really don’t love the gym all of the time and perfer to workout at home. Even then, 30 minutes of strength is my max but when I go on walks outside I can easily go for an hour with the hubby and pups. B fast looks great!
peanutbutterfingers says
totally agree- being outside makes it much easier to run/walk longer. much more to look at!
Nicole says
Most of the time an hour is all I can handle too…but, when I am really stressed out or I want to procrastinate on homework or studying, I can easily find ways to spend around 2 hours there….but, that’s rare
peanutbutterfingers says
so true! when i was going to bodypump i could be there for more than an hour. i guess i just need a change of pace to last for a longer time… an hour is plenty for me right now though, so it works, i guess!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
It totally depends…..but usually about 90 minutes. Most of the time its only 60 though! Hah. If I am teaching classes then that is a diff story–it is WAY easier to stay in the zone if I am getting paid to motivate others doing something I LOVE to do 🙂 heh.
LOVE that sandwich combo!!
Khushboo says
On most days, I’m done after an hour! Occasinally ill want to stretch it to 100 minutes or so!
Hope says
Breakfast looks tasty! 🙂 All of these cookie recipes are making me want to start baking asap! Thankfully, I have plans for holiday baking this weekend. I cannot wait!
Lauren @ Vaguely Vegan says
I’m right there with you at the hour mark. My gym just depresses me…not enough natural light, I feel like I’m working out in someone’s basement so usually around an hour I’m ready to get out and get some fresh air.
I’ve never tried jelly on an egg sandwich before, but you make it look so good! Think I’ll give it a try…
Nicole says
I can be there about 75 minutes, depending on how far I run before moving on to other things.
I need to start eating a bigger breakfast. I don’t think a pudding cup is enough. Or a granola bar.

Yeah I definitely agree with the 60 mins max out. I usually do 30 mins of pylometrics and an hr of body sculpt on fridays. My brain checks out at like an hr into the workout. ( I’m also trying to push myself because I love the instructor that teaches those classes) By that time, I have just enough energy for a strong finish 🙂
Sabrina says
An hour is the most I can ever do. Sometimes that is pushing it. The only time I can “workout” for more than an hour is if I am rollerblading, because then I seem to lose track of time.
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers says
I think 1 hr and 15 is my limit and my preferred time, though that includes warm up, cool down, and stretching. I don’t stay that long every day, but I try to on half or most days.
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
It depends on my mood, sometimes I’m just done after 50 min, but most days I have to force myself to leave! If I hit 1.5 hours, that’s it, haha I make myself walk out the door
Becky @ Fit Chick on the Fly says
I’m the same way. Once that hour mark hits at the gym then I am DONE-ZO!
HRCK says
An hour is my preferred time at the gym as well. I sometimes go to spinning classes that are 75-90 minutes, and guh, I am seriously reading to bolt out the door after that. An hour is much more reasonable 🙂
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
There are so many delicious looking cookies. I want to eat them all! I sometimes max out even sooner than 60 minutes, especially if I’m doing the same thing the whole time.
Sarah says
I’ve gotten the weirdest looks at breakfast for my cheese/egg/jelly combos but I love it! Best combo ever 🙂
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
Great cookie links! YUM 🙂
Hilliary @Happily Ever Healthy says
I want to make the homemade thin mints! Those are my favorites! I am typically at the gym for an hour-an hour and a half it just depends on how stressful of a day it was!
Blog is the New Black says
I’ve made those Thin Mints and they are pretty much the best thing ever… better than the real deal, maybe? Or maybe I just heart mint stuff…
Lindsey says
I agree I used to do 40 minute workouts and loved them but then getting to the gym 5 days a week was hard with my schedule so I decided to up it to 60 mins/4days a week. My 1 hour is my max for sure. I am always in awe of the people that are there when I get there and still there when I leave, but then again I think the gym is a social place for some of those people and it is not for me.
Rebecca @ Naturally Healthy and Gorgeous says
You have me hooked on egg, cheese and jelly sandwiches. My new favorite is to buy the blueberry vanilla goat cheese from Trader Joe’s and put that on the sandwich…soooo good!
Mallory says
i could stay at the gym for over an hour, but i rarely do that because there is a guy there that i find super cute who always talks to me…and i dont want him thinking im crazy! lol!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Yumm the thin mints look great! I can usually do about an hour and 53 to 30 mins in the gym, but after that, I want out!
Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) says
I want those banana foster bars!
I’m pretty much spent at an 1.5 hours I’d say.. that’s usually more than enough time to get in quality cardio, stretch, and play around with free weights.. I’m never sure if I should be doing cardio sessions plus weights though..
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
an hour is my absolute max. and that is usually too much! it’s funny, because if i’m outside, i could work out for hours…something about an indoors gym, though, drives me crazy after too long!
Emma @ Getting There & Going Places says
Oh my those all look SO good! :O I don’t know which recipe to pick to make! 😛
BTW, I really loved your reindeer cupcakes!
For me it depends how long my workouts are. Sometimes, when I’m in the mood for it I can spend up to 2 hours in there! I usually spend at least an hour in there.. 🙂
Michelle @ Blogitness says
If I’m taking a class at the gym, I can last an hour in class and about a half an hour doing my own thing in the gym. If I don’t take a class, it’s about 45 minutes before I zone out.
Shannon says
Yum cookies! I need to compile my list of holiday baking treats now that finals are over later today!!!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
i’m the same – about an hour is my tops in the gym. after that i feel like i don’t work as hard, and i get mentally checked out.
lotsa good lookin’ cookies today!!
Hillary says
Thanks for the cookie shout-out, Julie! Hope everyone likes them as much as I did!
laura says
I’m the same! My gym at University of Maryland (which I miss soooo much) was the best, I would normally spend about 2 hours, but on days I was swimming I’d be there much much longer. Especially this summer when I took a yoga class. I’d go to the gym for yoga (1.5 hour class) then stairmaster 30 mins, then run 30 mins, maybe weights, and then go outside to swim and sunbathe. I basically lived at the gym and loved it.
ugh miss it
LeeAnn says
I am not a regular gym goer-I do most of my workouts outside and at home…but I recently got a free 10 pass to our local (AMAZING) Rec Center. I could easily spend 3 hours there and still not be ready to go home. By the time I take a class or do cardio, lift, stretch and do some swimming….I have to make myself leave!
Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon says
I’m with you…an hour is just about all I want to (and have time to!) spend at the gym. After that, I’m ready to move on with my day!
Angela @ Health, Happiness & Harmony says
If I do a spinning class for 45, then I do an upper body workout after so longer than an hour, but if I’m doing my typical 30 minutes elliptical and then strength training, between and hour and an hour and 15…then I’m spent. 🙂
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
An hour is about the same for me as well! I start getting antsy and think about all the things I need to get done!
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
Those peppermint bark cookies look so good!
Amy says
i prob max out at an hour…definitely depends on the day…some days my mind just isnt there which makes things SO much harder.
homemade thin mints…? yummmm
Colleen says
Well I teach aerobic classes and love the gym. I will say that after 4 hours I’m veryyy done. Perhaps I just need a change of scenery so that’s when I’ll take my classes outside!
Gen says
I like to workout for about an hour as well! Those cookies all look fabulous!!! I’m in the middle of making several different cookies to give away!
Lena @ Fit on the Rocks says
Like some posters said, if I’m taking an hour class, I can stay at the gym for about an hour and a half. No class, probably only an hour before I start feeling like a hamster.
Lindsay @ In Sweetness and In Health says
Oh my gosh I want to gobble up all of those cookies!! I can’t go longer than an hour at the gym. And sometimes my brain starts to shut off even before that haha.
Megan @ Fiterature says
I, too, prefer the outdoors over the gym. I can easily go for a run and hit the 90 minute mark without even knowing it! But put me in a gym and I last maybe 45 minutes – unless I am taking a class and then I’m good for an hour.
The cookies look great, thanks for sharing!
Corrie Anne says
I can hang at the gym all night. Kevin has drag me out kicking and screaming. Lol. I’ll run a few miles. Do some weights. And then I’ll want to do a few Zumba songs… lol.
Meredith says
i do about 2 hours every day at the gym – but sometimes some of that time is spent outside running. makes days like today’s 4 hour run seem easy – ha! #marathontrainingstrikesagain
Paige @ Running Around Normal says
I agree! In fact, I just posted yesterday how I’m very very very rarely in the gym longer than an hour. Usually it’s 45 minutes or less.
Jessica Corbin says
I typically do a good two hour workout before I leave, and mentally I could go for another two hours. I did about 3-4 hour workout days when I was unemployed and then getting back to the working days, it dropped to about two hours, which I suppose is still good! I could probably go forever.
Allison says
I usually do 45 min of cardio and some abs… If I’m planning to do more weights, then I cut back on my cardio because like you, I get a little stir-crazy if I’m there too long! I haven’t actually timed it, but I bet it’s about after an hour… Having good company always helps 😀 It’s funny though, over an hour spent workout out outside doesn’t phase me!
Paul Alexander says
Egg sandwich is cool, never had that, will try it!
Anne @strawberryjampackedlife says
I was always the one keeping us at the gym. As a former dancer, I like to take a long time to stretch. But my husband doesn’t. Since he was just sitting there, I started cutting my stretching shorter and shorter. Finally, I could barely touch my toes anymore. As I’ve been working out more by myself, I’ve made stretching a priority and it’s amazing how much flexibility I have gotten back. One of my life goals is to still be able to do the splits when I’m 50!!
Heather says
depends on what I’m doing. straight cardio one hour. mic of cardio and weights 1.5 hours. but I love my new gym so I don’t mind. 🙂
Katrina @ In Katrina's Kitchen says
I’m spent after about an hour too 🙂 Hey thanks for the Thin Mint cookie lovin!! xoxo- Katrina
Felicia @ Let's Talk About... says
An hour is definitely my top. I feel like 45 minutes is about ideal most of the time.
