This morning started off with eggs!
When we awoke, Ryan played with Sadie outside while I prepared breakfast. It was already more than 80 degrees before 8 a.m. Phew! I was happy to claim indoor breakfast duty.
On the menu for today was scrambled eggs with spinach, chicken sausage and avocado, paired with a sweet wheat Alternative bagel topped with melted cheese.
After breakfast, we changed and drove across town to make it to the 9 a.m. service at our church.
I had to laugh when we rolled into the church parking lot playing a lil’ Notorious B.I.G.
Anytime Hypnotize comes on the radio, you gotta do a little dancing… even if it is in the passenger’s seat of the car, which obviously makes you look super cool.
After church Ryan talked me into accompanying him to Hair Cuttery while he got a trim by convincing me that I could just browse around T.J.Maxx next door while he got his hair cut. It was a great plan, until we realized T.J.Maxx doesn’t open until 11 a.m. on Sundays.
Since we were already there, I grabbed a magazine to flip through while Ryan got his hair cut and decided I may be coming around to the whole maxi skirt thing.
It took me a while to feel comfortable wearing a maxi dress, mostly because I’m tall and too-short maxi dresses don’t look so cute. Maxi capri dresses? No thanks.
Unfortunately my camera battery died at the Hair Cuttery, so the rest of our shenanigans for the afternoon went undocumented, including lunch at Subway. I’m pretty sure you all know what a six-inch ham sub looks like, so it’s all gravy.
When we arrived back home and my camera battery came back to life, I snapped some photos of the best thing I ate all day.
Dark chocolate avocado mousse!
This batch wasn’t quite as chocolaty as my first batch (I didn’t use as much cocoa powder and it wasn’t specifically dark chocolate cocoa powder), but the mousse was still incredibly creamy and satisfying. I topped my cup with crumbled white chocolate-covered pretzels. Sweet + Salty!
Plans for the rest of the day include venturing outside with Sadie when the heat dissipates a bit, making a yummy dinner, baking the apple fritter bread that called to me on Pinterest and watching The Matrix that Ryan DVRed earlier this week. I’ve never seen The Matrix and Ryan thinks I’ve shamed the Fagan name because of this, so we’re changing that tonight.
P.S. The Fashion page was updated this afternoon.
Question of the Afternoon
- Is there a fashion trend that you weren’t sold on at first that eventually grew on you?
The main trend I can think of for me is skinny jeans. I’m still more comfortable wearing flare jeans because I think they’re more flattering on my body type, but I eventually started coming around to skinny jeans when I found a few pairs that were cropped at the ankle… or made of a combination of denim and that stretchy material and weren’t as constricting.
Michelle says
Toms…I bought my first pair today! have to make that avocado mousse! I have the opposite problem…I’m 5ft so finding a maxi dress that I don’t trip over is a tad difficult!
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
oh man, i could add TOMS to my list, too. i thought they were seriously ugly at first, but they are incredibly comfy and, oddly enough, that made them 10x cuter for me! 🙂
Michelle says
As soon as I put them on I didn’t want to take them off, definitely wearing them to the office tomorrow!
Sana says
Yes, i totally get the TOMS hype, they are SO comfy!
Joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
I’m the same height so I can relate – I haven’t found a maxi dress that fits yet either!
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
I agree with the TOMS. I haven’t broken down and bought a pair yet, but I want to. And I didn’t really like them at first!
Margaret says
love that dress!! where’s it from?
peanutbutterfingers says
thanks so much! info is here: https://www.pbfingers.com/2012/07/08/summer-dress/
Erin @ The Grass Skirt says
Like you, I wasn’t sold on the whole maxi dress or maxi skirt trend at first, but it was because I am short. Now that I am pregnant, I wear both because they are SO comfy!
Brenna says
You always have the cutest clothes! How about we trade wardrobes and call it even! 😉
Rachel says
I’m loving the avocado chocolate mousse recipe!!! I don’t have cocoa powder and its ridiculously hot outside to venture out for some!!
Cannot wait to have some of this deliciousness! Ypu are awesome!
The maxi dress is pretty awesome! I’m a bit curvy so it takes some searching to find the right one that compliments me well.
Anne says
When overalls first came out (back in the mid-90s), I did NOT like them. Then I finally tried them on with a short sleeve mock-turtleneck shirt (oh yeah!) and it looked great! Of course, they are no longer in style. But I rocked them back in high school!
Carrie @ Fitness and Frozen Grapes says
I was a little hesitant to hop on the maxi dress bandwagon at first, too. Like you, Julie, I’m on the taller side (5’10”), and there’s nothing more awkward than a too short maxi dress, lol. I found one at Anthropologie last summer that’s on the long side, and I absolutely love it!
@pluvk says
You and I both have the same fashion fears. I wasn’t into skinny jeans at all until recently. Now I hardly wear my flares! And maxi dresses weren’t my thing either (I’m a little shorty!), but I bought two and get so many compliments! As for the maxi skirt, that’s another fear I got over… with a RED skirt, too! I still feel a little awkward, but you gotta do you, right? 😉
Amber @ Bring In-the-Pink says
I wasn’t sold on fedoras, but My husband picked one up for me and I’ve been rocking it all weekend. It adds a little spice to my summer wardrobe!
Georgia says
That mousse looks delish. For me it’s been lace up boots. They’re a little too masculine…I got a pair from steve madden the other day and I’m worried I may have made a mistake ! :-/
Audrey S says
Is is strange that, aside from the delicious looking dark chocolate avocado mousse, the one picture that made my mouth water was the melted cheese on your morning bagel!? It looks so bubbly and perfectly melted 🙂
Kelsey says
I wasn’t sold on colored denim at first, but when I tried on a pink pair of pants I had to have them! That mousse looks delicious!!
Jess @ Blonde Ponytail says
It took me a while for the skinnies too–but they actually can be quite flattering. Love the protein packed b-fast to start the day-my goal is to do a better job of that so I don’t eat the ENTIRE kitchen at lunch!
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
oh wowww I wouldn’t have thought that you’re not into maxi skirts~I think it really depends on the color, shape, and style. I recently bought a dark grey one and it’s really plain! But it goes well with anything and it’s suuuuuper comfy! 😀 I never have liked neon colors. But I realize that the older I get, the more adventurous my taste gets too! Still, neon is a hard one for me.
Emily says
Ooh geez, I’m 5’2″ so I don’t think I’ll ever jump on the maxi dress/skirt bandwagon.
I’ve definitely been a skinny jeans and leggings convert– since I’m petite the flare jeans I used to wear swallowed me up!
Thinking of styles, I remember when chokers were huge among girls in grade school.. I wore one for a year straight :s embarrassing.
Julie says
Same here! Being short doesn’t let you wear long dresses/skirts.
Katherine @ The Fit Lady Sings says
I wasn’t into maxi skirts/dresses, and had length issues with them, as well (I’m 5’10). But I found a few dresses that were long enough, and I love them!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
that mousse + pretzel looks delicious! I really need to try this avocado mousse!
Samantha says
Gladiators! I remember thinking they were so ugly! Now I have tons of pairs! Haha oh well. I always wonder what will be heinous (that we wear now) in 10 years!
Mary says
I think the maxi dress and maxi skirts can look SO cute if done right. It has taken me a while to come around to that. I can only admire other people wearin them though because I am much too short to pull them off! And like you, it took me a while for the skinny jean trend. I usually catch onto things just as they are going away. Haha
Chelsea @ Chelsea's Health says
At our local produce market this morning they had Florida avocados. I asked the staff how they are different than Mexican avodacos, other then the size they said they are creamier. Since you live in FL I wonder if you have tried these? I imagine they would be good in the mousse if they truly are creamier.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles says
I wasn’t sold on the super bright/colourful skinny jean trend going around. I love bright colours, but I was more dark or white jeans with a bright top.
I ended up buying a pair of bright purple skinnies and now they’re one of my favourites. 🙂
I struggled with maxi dresses at first too – I’m 5’7 so it;s hard to find the right length. If you find one that fits right it’s adorable…and ridiculously comfy!
Allison @ Running Through Red Lights says
Oh goodness, there are so many fashion trends I’m not quite sure about, mostly because I don’t think they look right on my body… maxi dresses/skirts, skinny jeans, rompers (the shorts attached to the top thingy), espadrilles, ruffle tiered tops, etc. I always think everything looks so cute in stores or online, but when I go to try it on I think it looks weird. I am seriously lacking any sort of fashion sense though!
Angela says
So many good things going on in this post! Your outfit is absolutely adorable! And the avocado mousse looks amazing. I’ve been meaning to make it ever since you posted the recipe.
Over the past few months, I’ve fallen in love with colored denim! I even bought myself a pair of red skinny jeans which I would never, in a million years, thought I would have liked.
Rachel says
LOOOOOVE your dress!! I actually just got around to wearing maxi dresses (I’m short so had to get them all tailored lol)… maxi skirts however, idk if I’d look good in them haha I feel I wouldn’t know what tops to wear. I def think you could pull it off!
For me I didn’t really like skinny jeans when they first came out… now they’re all I wear 🙂
your mousse looks amazing! (I loove chocolate haha), but sadly I’m allergic to avocado :/
Megan @ The I Do Diaries says
You’ll have to let us know how the apple fritter bread turns out-it sounds absolutely delicious. I really wonder how we got by without Pinterest, back in the “old days” 😉
I think the fashion trend that is finally growing on my is the neon colored skinny jeans. I’m much more of a pastels kinda gal, but they’re finally growing on me! I don’t own any, but I did by a pair of light yellow skinnies the day…baby steps I guess!
Lindsay says
Rompers. I have a long torso and they make me look like I have on a giant adult diaper. They do look cute on some people, but ugh, no thank you. I love maxi dresses and skirts though! I didn’t like skinny jeans at first either, and I’m still really particular about ones that I’ll wear. I saw your post FB about the fritter bread and I hope it turns out worth it for you!
Joe @ The Frolicking Fells says
I had to watch The Matrix six times before I could make it through it and understand it all. However, after viewing #6, everything came together and I loved it!
Lea says
I’m a little scared to buy a maxi skirt because I’m only 5’4″ and I don’t want it to look like I’m drowning in skirt, but I found a skirt at TJ Maxx I’m in love with. It’s multi-colored and a little hippie-dippie but I love it, if it’s still there when I go back I’m calling it maxi skirt fate and getting it!
And good luck with the Matrix, it’s not my kind of movie and I’ve fallen asleep every time someone has tried to make me watch it!
Joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
I’d say Toms, although I JUST recently bought a pair in the winter. I really, really want a maxi dress, but I’m too short (5ft does not a maxi dress wearer make).
Ps. You look super tall in that photo!
Brie @ Coxswain's Dilemma says
I’ve been looking for more ways to incorporate avocado into my diet – mousse and with eggs is wonderful!
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers says
I’m not all about the maxi skirt, but I am *alllllll* about white choc cov pretzels. Yum!
Kristen Exline says
Skinny Jeans!!! I thought they were horrible at first. Now, I can’t stand flared leg jeans, I think they are so unflattering, lol.
Meredith @ DareYouTo says
Funny that you weren’t into maxi dresses because you’re tall — I’ve been afraid to wear em out because I’m SHORT!
It’s kind of genius to put those white-choco covered pretzels on top of the mousse.
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
I second skinny jeans! It just took me finding the right pair to like them!
I love the idea of adding avocado to eggs!
Meg says
I love maxi skirts/dresses! But I am short so they’re usually almost too long! Still, I think they are sooo comfortable and actually cooler in hot weather! I think Victoria’s Secret sells them in different lengths.
Felicia says
Sperry’s. HATED them at first. Then I broke down and got a pair. Now I LOVE them so comfy and they go with anything.
Lauren @ Sassy Molassy says
i was freaked out by maxi dresses when they got popular a few years ago because I’m 5’3 and figured they’d make me look even shorter. But then I found one from Anthro that I LOVED and decided I might even look taller in them. 😉
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
I was the same way about skinny jeans, now they’re practically all I wear! And I’m still trying to decide if I like maxi dresses.
Jill J. says
Hi Julie! I feel the same way about maxi skirts/dresses, b/c I always feel too short to wear them. I also feel that way about Toms….but my husband has a pair and LOVES them and I have the wedges and they’re really comfy.
Also–we were just in Orlando for the weekend and found a great place in Lake Eola Heights. We had so much fun getting acquainted with the city (and the heat ;)). We also heard from everyone that we met that 4 Rivers has amazing BBQ–being a Texas girl, I can’t wait to try it out!
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
I tend to not like most fashion trends when they start out haha. I hated Uggs for the first two years they were cool before finally coming around to them–by which I mean I didn’t think they were hideous when worn correctly. Skinny jeans, maxi dresses, leggings…yeah. Never liked any of them from the get-go. I actually still don’t like maxi dresses or leggings, probably because I spent four years at college being horribly overexposed to the ubiquitous sorority girl uniform of an XL hoodies and black leggings (and usually Uggs), which, though I’m sure was comfortable, was never a flattering look on even the prettiest girl.
Sabrina @ Work It Ms Jackson says
That chocolate mousse looks AMAZING!
Ashley @ Sweat for Sweets says
Ohmygosh there are SO many trends that I wasn’t so sure about at first but have since come to like, including maxi skirts and dresses and skinny jeans! Also on this list would be high-waisted skirts, rompers and cropped tops. One trend that I’ve never been a fan of is harem pants. Just can’t do them!
Suzanne @ Fit Minded Mom says
Most Maxi dresses are too long for me! I finally found one that is just the right length and hits at my ankles. Most others, I would seriously be walking on.
I love the romper look now but I hated it at first. It just reminded me of something my 6 year old daughter should be wearing. I still haven’t bought one but thinking that may change in the near future.
Catherine says
i thought maxi dresses were horrible to begin with, but now i’m desperate for one!
Lisa says
I feel the same on the maxi trend. I just can’t imagine myself in one. I tried it on and looked like a fool. I’m too short for them I think. Your avocado mousse looks especially delicious tonight! 🙂
Khushboo Thadani says
Have you lost weight, Julie? You’re looking tiny in that pic of you and Ryan!
Geraldine @Go Ger Go! says
Do you have a Topshop nearby? I love Topshop Leigh skinnies because they’re almost more leggings than jeans. So comfy and flattering!
Bek @ Crave says
I love maxi skirts- when it’s cold (it’s winter over here) you can even wear leggings or thermals underneath because you can’t see them 😛 They are so chic. Love wearing them high waisted!
Sheila says
Isn’t 5-foot-7 just a little above average height for a woman? Many of my friends are that height and have never had trouble finding clothes. Once you get closer you six feet, you’ve got a problem 🙂
Where are you shopping?
peanutbutterfingers says
the average woman is 5’4”. i haaate it when pants or long dresses are too short, so i’m probably extra picky.
