Her elegant handwriting.
The smell of her house.
Her dainty wrist always dripping in jewelry.
Scotch on the rocks with a twist.
Her sugar cookies.
My beautiful grandmother.
I remember walking through the door of my grandmother’s house in Gettysburg when I was growing up. The wonderful smell that somehow managed to find its way into the packages that she sent to our house in Palatine would hit me full force. The smell of my grandmother’s house.
After walking through the door and inhaling deeply, I would give my grandmother a tight hug before my eyes darted into the far right-hand corner of her kitchen.
That’s where I knew I could always find Mimi’s gigantic glass cookie jar packed to the brim with her homemade sugar cookies.
I’d look back at my grandmother and she’d nod her head towards the cookies. That was all the permission I needed. It was cookie time!
In my three years of blogging, I think I can safely say this is one of the most precious recipes I’ve ever shared.
My grandma’s sugar cookies are by no means healthy, but they are by all means delicious. My entire family adores these sugar cookies. My parents, sister, aunts, uncles, cousins… everyone.
If you make them, be sure to make them extra large. They’re supposed to be giant. That’s part of the fun! They’re big, cakey yet dense at the same time and lightly dusted with sugar.
The sugar dusting is a must as well!
I hope you enjoy these cookies as much as we do in my family!

It’s so great to see how much you love, respect and admire your grandmother, just by the way you talk about her. Beautiful post!

I don’t have much recollection of my paternal grandparent”s home as Nanna Pole died early … But she always drank tea so that smell reminds me of her … And Chantilly dusting powder.
My other grammas house smelled clean. Really clean … Pinesol clean. Bleach. Pledge. We were afraid to breathe in Grandma Terry’s house.
My parent’s house smells awesome … A combination of fresh air coming in off Lake Huron, a touch of laundry soap (if you enter from the garage), wood smoke in winter, and no pet smells … Face it we love them but they do have smells.
Our dog got in my suitcase today (I’m off to Japan as hubby is working there) and got so upset she vomitted. I’ll take Sadie any day.

The recipe I associate with my grandparents, well my grandma in particular, are Salmon rissoles. Everytime my brother and I stayed there my grandma would cook these for us. They were so good and while we have attempted to duplicate the recipe they will never measure up to hers.

I always associate beef and noodles and green bean casserole with my grandma. Those were two things she made that I absolutely loved! They are such classics but when she made them they always tasted the best

This post just totally reminded me of my grandma who passed away a few years ago. I LOVED the smell of her house!!! I wish I had a candle that smelled just like her house!! She would always make me and my brother Rice Crispy Treats!! They were the bombiggity!! To this day no Rice Crispy Treat comes close to hers…and I am sure it was just the recipe off the box! I guess it is the added touch of LOVE that makes them that much better! Thank you for reminding me of my grammy today 🙂

Powdered sugar on top? Or granulated?
I always think of Wild Rice and Scootcheroos when I think of my Grandma Rose. My other Grandma (just “Grandma”), I’ll think of her homemade bread, ginger cookies, and homemade jellies and jam. 🙂
Thanks for the good memories!

Your grandmother is a beautiful lady! How precious to be sharing her recipe. I’ll never forget the smell of my grandmother’s kitchen – coffee, jam, and fresh baked Bohemian sweet breads. Smelled great!

When I think of my grandma I think of cherry pie and homemade spaghetti and meatballs. Actually the meatballs were my PaPa Phil’s specialty as he was a true Italian but the cherry pie…all my grandma!!! Gosh….how I miss those days!!

I’ve been trying to find some cute dessert recipes for my sister’s upcoming baby showers and I think I just found a great one! The story behind them makes them feel like the perfect, cozy and family-centric cookie for such an occasion. Sometimes people want to keep those kinds of recipes close and not let the world have them (and who can blame them), but I think its sweet that you would share that- and I promise to do them justice!
I have two recipes that I associate with my grandma. It’s funny because I rarely go through a holiday without thinking of my grandma’s fruit salad- a recipe no one has made in years and I may have to try and revive this summer- and the dish that I drooled over as a kid: Rice and raisins. This consisted of cooked, instant white rice, with a splash of warm milk, sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar and peppered with raisins. Its a horrible and absolutely delicious dish that still makes me smile to think about, ha ha.

Hi Julie! I was wondering if this recipe will still work well if I only chilled the dough for a couple hours as opposed to overnight? Thanks, can’t wait to make these!
